- Released in 1954 this is the oldest of four films restored from the South Lanarkshire Council Archive that were produced for the East Kilbride Development Corporation to show the development of the new town and promote it as a place to live and do business.
Includes footage of East Kilbride Village, Rolls Royce factory opening and Development Corporation planners at work
I lived in Quebec Drive, Westwood from 1959 - 1963 when we immigrated to Australia. This is amazing to watch!!! Love it all!!!
My family moved here from the Gorbals in the 50’s. My dad loved it and I’ve heard lots of stories including about the local Teddy Boys.
Amazing! Friends in Canada just showed me this. I lived in Threshold Park, just off Lindsay Road which is shown here. My best school friend lived in the very first house of the new town in Lindsay Road. I have lived in Sydney, Australia since 1971 and EK does seem to have downgraded a bit since it was all sparkling new. They even knocked down my school, Duncanrig, a couple of years back. I stood in its foundations before it was built.
Hi there Thank you for this wonderful share ~ such a nice content. Excellent views , Big like. Keep it up and stay safe, stay connected. Warm greetings from New York.
I was born in East Kilbride in 1947, good film brings back lots of memories.
It's funny how many people came from here and moved away to Canada or Australia etc. I moved in 74 and don't regret it.
EK wasn't utopia but it was better than living in a one bedroom tenement flat in Rutherglen sharing a toilet with three families. We moved to Murray 7 in July 1957 and I lived there until 1969. I have many happy memories of the town and its people. I enjoy returning to visit my family and friends, many of whom chose to stay in EK.
My old town in 1955. Loved the place.
omg my great grandparents stayed in calderwood I'm sure, when they passed my grandparents moved in to their house for a while, settling in westwood after then back to calderwood after. my family are still in east kilbride, 5 generations now I'm sure , if I remember correctly what my gran & granda said x
We moved to EK in 1952 when I was 3. This film brings back memories!!
I lived in Naysmith Bank, Murray and emigrated to New Zealand in 1978
As a schoolboy I delivered newspapers for RS McColl in the early 70s. Naysmith Bank, Telford Road, Mid Park & Carnegie Hill. Did you e er give me a £tip?
Love this film. Thank you Strathclyde Council(or whatever!) then South Lanarkshire Council for screwing up this town for money that you probably don't have any more!!!! When it was EKDC it was perfect.. you stayed in the wee town... paid your taxes and did well..... and now ? Sorry 70's-80's child.
Wow. I'm from westwood and this is weird to see.
east Kilbride was built as a new town - mainly for the Glasgow overspill- it provided good houses & jobs for families -many of whom were living in single ends with no prospects - the idea thjs was Nazi is laughable
that was when east kilbride was cool now its a joke bonkers place not nice at all EK development were good with people
legalised vandalism to build factories of misery.
i was born in the house at whithill placein 1958. town it just full of junkies now
