I would rather jump off a cliff than sing in front of Joan

I think Clare Gormley was wonderful. I wonder why she has not had a successful career.

Such accumulated wisdom and generosity from all three wonderful artists... all aspirants should imbibe everything that is shared here... but in our instant gratification/impatient society in which we now live, so much of this knowledge is out with the bathwater...

Sutherland, Cotrubas, Krause, what a line up. Yes Joan could give a masterclass however no other human being, possibly in all history, has possessed such an extraordinary gift for negotiating the most fiendishly difficult coloratura without a hint of strain and hitting every note bang on. Absolutely extraordinary. I saw Cotrubas twice at Covent Garden, a gem of an artist with a great voice and the ability to act convincingly. Unfortunately never heard the wonderful Krause in a live performance.

It makes me feel good that I had the same or very similar observations about the singers before they critiqued them. I am so thankful for my distinguished pedagogue Julie Freeman who taught me Bel Canto technique. I have gone in the direction of Broadway and Gospel music with it, but incorporating fine opera technique makes untold differences in vocal stamina, quality, health, and most of all, a whole new range of options to choose from when singing. I am a Verdi baritone, however with time and practice, over the years I have stretched my vocal mix up to producing tenor C5s all the way up to a G5. I own it to Bel Canto technique and all those who invested in me.

    Video davvero interessante.

AND again...spot on with the "emotion"...if I may share a story? I was talking to my husband LAST NIGHT about this very thing. I was explaining to him that when Mum sang her bit from Gotterdammerung, the "Helle Wehr! Heilige Waffe!". I was saying to him how it amazed me that she sang it with such vocal ferocity and you can definitely get a sense of the anger but she HAD to be composed. Otherwise, as Joan says here, that the vocals will just get away from you. That things will be forced. Ok I am going to be quiet now :D

Love Sutherland (actually that's an understatement) but don't know if there's any sense in trying to learn from her. She can't be emulated. Almost every other soprano when discussing her says that someone like her comes along once every 50 years but it's silly to try to do what she does because it's impossible. Both Dessay and Netrebko are on record as saying she's perfect but unattainable. Her singing was completely Sui generis. I will add that while I am not a big Callas fan I appreciate her special qualities as well and I think that singers shouldn't have gone anywhere near her to learn either. What she had was unique to her and came from within. Almost all the singers who were considered Callas disciples sang like caricatures. The teachers who can offer something worthwhile in 30 minutes probably are not famous.

I agree to a certain extent but Pavarotti said he learned a lot from Sutherland. Of course it’s a bit different though…it takes a genius to understand another one.

You’re not getting it. The point is not for these greats to be emulated, but for the individual students to be as great as possible. It’s b/c of teachers like Maria Callas, Montserrat Caballe, Franco Corelli or Giuseppe Denise, that we still have few great, technically brilliant opera singers today. If we had more teachers like that, we wouldn’t have so many mediocre singers like we have today. Doesn’t mean the students have to be these legends at all.

oh stupid comment, Ileana! CALLAS herself suggested that ladies do their masterclasses in long neutral pants or long plain skirt. You're there to work, not to win a competition.

Callas in her masterclasses has pointed out that there's no use in emotion unless there is technical prowess behind it. Even with Maria's disease creeping up on her chords, she was always a fantastic technician, her blood was infused with the spirit of bel canto.

These master classes are fun to watch, but I think these singers really don’t learn anything in half an hour. The singers are nervous and the advice given goes in one ear and out the other.
