It wasn't Norman Lear's fault. Apparently, it was Fred Silverman (CBS executive) who rushed to give Bea Arthur her own show. That's what Norman Lear said years ago. Also (also it was said by Fred Silverman himself) there was a sense that it kind of took away the banter between Mike and Archie whenever Maude made an appearance

Those 2 jawing over FDR is classic! Archie isn't wrong about him bartering half of Europe and Asia to Stalin to rid the world of The Fuhrer! I can't not laugh also at him talking about her 2 dead husbands smiling in their caskets!

    One of the best episodes.
Maude was perfect at exposing the fragile white male bigot. Her character was a great role model for women.

Well…now we know where the writers of Beaches got Bette Midler’s “classic” line: Enough about me; let’s talk about you. What do YOU think of ME?

I had a Jewish Foster mother, who believed marrying outside of the Jewish faith was going against a Jewish law. Especially if it's to marry "a Gentile woman."
It breaks the line and turns the children into Gentiles, because "their mother isn't Jewish."
She didn't hold with he practice of "turning a Gentile woman Jewish through a manmade ceremony created by the synagogue instead of Jewish law.

I didn't like how liberal Maude was it went to far. Archie is more opened minded than maude because he will bend and give in. Maude is more narrow minded than Archie because she won't bend it's either her way or the Highway.

Archie was more Willing to change his mind than Maude, but it always took some big thing for him to get his head out of his ass and actually change, and whether or not that change was a permanent one or not depended on the writers
