Japanese love to see their tools/machines worn out and broken from hard use. German and Swiss want you to admire their tools and machines. That’s why Japanese cars run longer. Not because they’re better, they aren’t. But because they’re designed to be used by people who won’t follow instruction manuals perfectly or use their tools/machines in the ideal environment. (Don’t change your oil in your Camery for 30,000kms, it keeps going without issue. Treat your BMW that way and it’s toast first time, every time.
Great, welcome to the club! Before I got into watches I just had a Seiko Solar SNE056, purchased in 2012 for $103. In January 2024 I replaced the rechargeable battery and it’s still running great. Now, I have 8 Seiko watches in my 15 watch collection. Five of these are vintage. A Laurel made in 1960 and a pocket watch made in 1971, for example. The vintage watches keep better time than my Presage! I have never paid more than $500 for a watch. Seiko! ❤
I bought a Seiko Presage “Style60’s” - SRPG05J1 a couple of days ago. I couldn't believe how much better it looked in the real than in the pictures. I really didn't plan to buy a watch that day or anytime soon, but I couldn't walk out of there without it. And I wonder if this isn't about to take the throne as my favourite in my little collection.
Seiko has historically been cherished for its exceptional value for money, a reputation it maintained for many years. Consumers grew accustomed to Seiko's reliability and affordability, as well as that Seiko "feel" distinguishing it from other brands. Unlike some brands that tend to repeat their successful models and focus only on refining existing movements without significant technological advancements (looking at Swiss brands), Seiko has consistently demonstrated innovation and occasional quirkiness. Although Seiko may no longer offer the same unbeatable value for money as it once did, and it has not released an unconventional watch like the TV watch in recent decades, the brand continues to excel in every aspect of horology. From producing affordable quartz movements to advancing high-accuracy quartz technology, Seiko proves itself as master watchmakers, prioritizing horological expertise over mere marketing prowess (looking at Swiss brands again).
@earthenjadis8199 What gives you that impression? I just get really enthusiastic about horological content and tend to go on about it. My point is that Seiko takes risks and not only innovates but also does some bold, unconventional things from time to time. This approach is quite refreshing and contributes to that unique Seiko feel that so many people love.
Thanks! I will save this, and use it to settle arguments! I could buy a Seiko a day. Currently, I am recovering from a stroke. (I lived. The recovery? A work in progress..) while rehabbing and therapy, I usually change Seikos twice a day.
Hello Britt, I bought the Seiko Edition from IFL in July this year and I'm thrilled. For me, the Deep Ocean Diver is a small work of art on my wrist. Thanks for the content.
It's hard to resist Seiko, as much as I try. I now have 4, including a vintage 6138-0030 automatic chronograph. 3 of them were picked up AFTER I got my Explorer II, so going high has not ruined my love for the brand.
I just picked up the Seiko SPB453 (the 63mas) and I must say this 6R55 is running spot on. I either got lucky, or Seiko is doing a better job at regulating these. The bezel ligns up too!
So true, all of it! I’ve been itching to get a GS, but still coming to terms with the cost. So yesterday I put on my old SARB 033, and fell in love with it all over again, for all the reasons you nicely articulated.
I have a Grand Seiko SBGA 283 and the SPB 185. Both great watches. One of my favorite things about their dive watches are you can buy truly iconic models at reasonable prices. EX: 62 MAS, MM200, Willard, Turtle and they have more modern designs with the Shogun and Samurai. There's literally a watch for everyone at different price points with Seiko.
i have two seikos: a gold-toned steel quartz one that was my first ever proper wristwatch, and a vintage diver that my grandfather gave me that lowkey looks like a cross between a pepsi, submariner, and a day-date
“Charming” video! Seiko is a great watch for a lot of reasons. It’s not the most accurate, but it’s not the worst. I brought a Seiko in 1980 and I’ve just had it cleaned and serviced for the first time. It still looks great! Hard to fault that.
I've loved Seiko watches since long before ever having one. They really are quite something - stylish, yet always functional. That said, I have only ever purchased a bezel model when the bezel is as perfectly aligned as possible. Cheers! 🙂
Wearing a SRPE Seiko 5 “Dress KX” for nearly half a year now-birthday present to myself-and love it, already feels like an old friend. It also tends to run about 5 sec or so fast a day so it keeps me on time 😂
living in SE Asia, seiko is defo the epitome of affordable watches. be it wrist watch, wall clock, table clock, seiko is everywhere! growing up, I never pay attention to seiko, like why are they so popular. until a few years ago I started to get interested in wrist watch and wanna buy a real wrist watch for myself. surprisingly, seiko is the first brand I look at 😂 somehow the design is very non nonsense. it's sophisticated, clean and just my vibe?? you can choose anything from their catalogue and you'll find yours. right now I have two seiko wrist watches and adore them both! their antiques line such as exceline and spirit just gorgeous. I'm not sure if they still sell it but somehow I always found in 2nd hand market. but yeah overall they're great ❤
I completely agree with you that Spring Drive is better than Co-Axial. For me Spring Drive is the greatest innovation in the world of watch movements because it solves the main problems in mechanical and quartz movements while bringing together the best of both technologies
I am a one watch person and it is a Seiko Prospex SRPE33K1 Manta Ray and I LOVE it so much. I did a huge amount of thinking about it because my wife received a really good inheritance and she told me to pick out a nice watch. I looked at Rolex, Omega, Blaincpan, etc. and I picked Seiko. I have had it for 4 years and really love this watch and I get a lot of compliments on it. Literally the only watch I would ever need. I know people that have expensive watches and are afraid to wear them so they wear a Casio or something like that. What is the point?
I used to have the same exact reaction when I initially saw all these videos gushing about Seiko. I was assuming inexpensive = cheap generic junk. Sometimes that's true, but it's the opposite with Seiko. A high quality watch made by a reputable brand with tons of history but without the obscene price tags.
Love the Seikos in my collection. Speaking of that IFL drop, there’s been so much unnecessary negativity towards the SRPD, IMO. It’s pretty darn accurate for the price (much more so than my Sarb017) and a great everyday beater. They might’ve downgraded the dive specs, but it suits every other purpose swimmingly. If the Hammy Auto can be considered a capable tool watch with the same WR, so can this. I also find the bracelet sturdy and much better than people make it out to be, but I bought the Seiko 5 GMT jubilee, to give it that SKX vibe (on occasion). I’ve wanted a Turtle for a while, but even with the screw down and heritage, it’s hard for my minimalist brain to justify two watches with the same movement 😅
Thanks for the Video. In front of me, there are 4 Seiko, They are One SKX, One SSK, One Turtle, and One Contura. Two of them are over 10 years, work fine. Most of the criticism of Seiko is accuracy. But I don't think it is a point. SSK work fine for me. Another point is over priced. Yes, I agreed. I feel that all GS are over priced. But for Sport 5s, they are all in good price. You never felt regret. Moreover, most of retail can give you a good discount for Seiko. Go ahead.
I think the great thing about Seiko is that any bad cheap watch has a superior Seiko someone can upgrade to. For example, a cheap gold watch can be upgraded to a Presage Half and Half or Beer Julep.
love the liitle shout out to the Seiko SRPG35, it's my daily wear. feel it's an 'under the radar' type of choice because the SRPE dressKX's get all the Seiko 5 attention.
People can hate Seiko as much as they want (especially on issues like pricing and QC nowadays), but, no matter what, you'll never go wrong with a Seiko (and same goes with a Casio, Citizen, Orient --the Big 4 of Japanese timepieces). Loved by Muggles and watchnerds alike, especially in Asia. Heck, there are even 'Seiko communities' from where I came from. And there is one video I saw where a Thai guy collecting Seiko Monster only and try to get his hands on every variants 😂. Lovely video as always Britt, big fan from Indonesia. 🎉
I may be one of the few people here who no longer trusts Seiko. Years ago I purchased a Seiko Dive Watch 150 Ref. 4025-0152. The movement stopped during my deployment to Afghanistan. I sent it back to Seiko. When it came back, it still did not work. I won't waste money on another Seiko, certainly not an automatic. The only Seiko I might consider in the future is a Gran Seiko.
Ya gotta luv her loving GS's, "Spring Drive"... Like it sounds cute like a Spring Roll, but super simplicitic. Now can we get real?.... Literally Every mechanical watch in the World is "driven by a Spring". Am i missing something 🙄🤔💁♂️
Seiko offers a great set of affordable product lines at a wide array of pricepoints and aesthetics for most tastes. For me personally, I am a big fan of the Prospex sports line, but not really enamored with its Presage and Seiko 5 lines. The Willard, Turtle, and Alpinist models are outstanding, rugged, and iconic watches - that define the appeal and versatility of Seiko as a brand. Now Grand Seiko, 9F and Spring Drive movements are amazing pieces of watch tech. As a watch tech and aesthetics leaning watch collector, I rank GS with Omega - and I am an Omega Acolyte!
Seiko is not growing Quarz , they are artificaly growing Saphire cristals for use in their movements, it needs far less power and gives a much higher accuracy .
I identify so much with this video, Britt! I can't put my finger on it, but there's just something about Seiko's design that speaks to me. I am in love with the Arita Porcelain models, but my wife makes fun of me for wanting a watch with a "toilet lid" dial, haha!
The only thing I don’t like about seiko when it comes to watches $500 below are their bracelets sometimes can feel flimsy and not as heavy, or has weight to it, feels cheap in a sense, it doesn’t have that premium bracelet feels compared to a $300-$400 Tissot watch their bracelet has weight and has this smooth feeling to touch.
Hey Britt, I got confused you mentioned your Seiko 5 GMT has +45 - 35 secs a day.. But then you said going back to my Seiko 5 GMT it's been closer +5 - 4 secs a day. Can you clarify that for me? Thank you. PS. I love your videos :)
Modern Seiko are a little under speccd but you cannot deny their charm. I still love my Samurai, Alpinist, SKX, and SRPE watches, even though I own Swiss watches that are better speccd. I would like to see Seiko put sapphire on the current Seiko 5s, and improve the stock bracelet to at least match the better Ali express brands like St. Martin or micros. And finally, regulate the movements to, if not cosc specs, better team 35 to 45 seconds plus or minus. With all that said, I still recommend them to my non watch friends, or as gifts for anyone from a son, daughter, niece or nephew graduating high school or college up to your Dad who hasn’t taken his old Seiko off since the 90s.
For me, Japanese watches are less pretentious. That's why I like them more. My image of them is 'the watch for the common man', as opposed to high priced jewelry from Switzerland. There used to be a bunch of US made brands that filled that role, but sadly they've all been gone for a long time. Bulova, Hamilton, Gruen, Elgin, Waltham, etc. And no, the current incarnations of those brands are not the same as they were from the late 1800's to the 1970's.
"Accuracy" ratings, like WR ratings are not about capability - they are about warranty or liability. Seiko, producing so many watches don't want people bringing them back for regulation unless they are beyond the generous tolerances - that's how they keep their prices low. Also: servicing Seiko mechanicals is ridiculously cheap in N.America, so I like their service model.
Been there re: audio. A couple times actually. I wish Seiko's weren't so damn ugly. They're the Great Value brand Tissot. Pick one up at your local Wal-Mart today!
Seiko used to be “so much bang for buck” But IF you pay rrp for a Seiko I feel that value is gone Although the Swiss market has done the same thing 😂 I do agree Seiko delivers a robust watch which will last a lifetime I’ve tried to love Seiko Owned many - but didn’t bond so I have none
Seiko is for the average person from all walks of life. Once a person becomes more successful, more accomplished, more significant, more iconic, on the legendary status like a bigtime businessman, bigtime celebrity, bigtime icon then that person will exclusively wear and collect Swiss watch. No matter how hard Seiko works on their watches, they just can't beat the Swiss Elite status
@@watchpapi name a top world leader, celebrity, world famous personality who owns a Seiko willingly with their own money without being sponsored? Probably even the emperor of Japan wears Rolex and not Credor
@@wanderer1125check out A Lang & Somme (German) and Roger Smith (U.K.) Can’t say I spend my time wondering what’s on the wrists of world leaders and celebs but I’m willing to bet they don’t limit themselves to Swiss watches.
It feels a little weird talking about Seiko and not starting with Quartz. Kinda like going to the Cheesecake Factory and completely skipping dessert. So much heritage, such a moment in history, so many terrified Swiss people! If you're going to buy your first Seiko, it really should be quartz... Moe.
If you were a bit older, say Gen X kind of older, NXS just rolls off the tongue so putting an S in front of it is easy. Now you have made the connection and will never forget! Seiko is not a New Sensation, continues to Mystify and Give You What You Need! (sorry, had to go there...)
Seiko has the habit of discontinuing their best watches right before I would have bought one (I swear). SARB 33 & 35, SARX 33 and 35, SNXS (I actually got the 77 and 79, but want an 81), SKX007 & 009 went up from 200 USD to 600
I'm wearing a Grand Seiko "Katana", a US-only limited edition. Mine is 287/500. Watching the smooth sweep of the second hand is mesmerizing for sure. The Spring Drive accuracy in phenomenal. As for the bracelet, I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. Yes, there is no micro adjustment, but maybe I got lucky and found the perfect fit after my watchmaker removed the necessary number of links. You could always go with a leather strap if the bracelet isn't to your liking. As a matter of fact, it comes with a strap. The finish on a Grand Seiko is second to none in my opinion.
@@DanSchrimpsher it’s too bad you can never replace the strap with one of thousands of choices. Material, color, style unlimited. Simple cheap pre-made or complicated fully custom exotics. It’s just sad that no such options exist….
@@f.kieranfinney457 What are you talking about man?! There’s a website called ‘Strap-ons’…I’m sure they’d sell them purely by the name. Why not google it at work….👀
One thing that I think needs to be said is that even though there’s this narrative that Seiko is price gouging, Long Island Watch recently did a video that pretty succinctly showed that Seiko is still putting out good timepieces for a good price. It’s just that the watches are now coming up to RRP and inflation, but even still, Seiko still tries to put a fair price on their new offerings. “We live in a society”, as they say.
They already raised prices (without fixing qc issues) before the enormous inflation started. Improvements such as the 6R35 turned out to be less than great. I keep wat I have but moved on to Citizen (JDM) watches and some Bulova watches.
I've had a seiko monster 1st gen for 23 years. Never let me down. It still looks great.
I love this! 👏🏻👏🏻
The monster grew on me so much after buying 1. Absolute stunner of a watch! The lume will burn your eyes out too ha ha!
One can spend their life just collecting monsters if not carful😂
My all-time favorite Seiko is the Gen 1 Monster too. Indestructible
Nice! Post a picture of it.

Seiko can be a TV watch and a computer watch, too. Seiko is not only a brand that's an expert watch maker but also a risk taker. And quirky as hell too, but we love it for it!

Hi, I'm a long term Seiko fanboy .... If you dismiss Seiko MO then its your loss ! Great vid Britt and baby bump
I like them simply because, as well as being good, there's a wide selection of them on the high street.
I have 3 seiko in my collection and I love all of them
Seiko used to be “so much bang for buck”
But IF you pay rrp for a Seiko I feel that value is gone
Although the Swiss market has done the same thing 😂
I do agree Seiko delivers a robust watch which will last a lifetime
I’ve tried to love Seiko
Owned many - but didn’t bond so I have none
I have two Seiko 5’s, one from IFL, and love them. Once you change to a rubber strap or nato, that bracelet had to go
Seiko is for the average person from all walks of life.
😂 that’s not quite true but I can see what you’re trying to say.
@@watchpapi name a top world leader, celebrity, world famous personality who owns a Seiko willingly with their own money without being sponsored? Probably even the emperor of Japan wears Rolex and not Credor
@@wanderer1125check out A Lang & Somme (German) and Roger Smith (U.K.)
Can’t say I spend my time wondering what’s on the wrists of world leaders and celebs but I’m willing to bet they don’t limit themselves to Swiss watches.
Bill Gates is pretty well off and he wears Casio. 🤷🏻♂️
It feels a little weird talking about Seiko and not starting with Quartz. Kinda like going to the Cheesecake Factory and completely skipping dessert. So much heritage, such a moment in history, so many terrified Swiss people! If you're going to buy your first Seiko, it really should be quartz... Moe.
I was watching this video and my wife said you have great curls :D
Tell her I said thank youuuuu 🤩🤩🤩🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🥂🥂🥂
Seiko brings a lot of new people into the world of watches.
If you were a bit older, say Gen X kind of older, NXS just rolls off the tongue so putting an S in front of it is easy. Now you have made the connection and will never forget! Seiko is not a New Sensation, continues to Mystify and Give You What You Need! (sorry, had to go there...)
You did not mention the Achilles heel of Seiko watches. Hard Lex. I'm not paying $300 for a watch without a sapphire crystal.
i own one Sieko,a brian may special edition but not because I like Sieko..Because I like May
I LOVE SEIKO SO MUCH
what color are they
Seiko has the habit of discontinuing their best watches right before I would have bought one (I swear). SARB 33 & 35, SARX 33 and 35, SNXS (I actually got the 77 and 79, but want an 81), SKX007 & 009 went up from 200 USD to 600
I love my Seiko "Arnie"
Seiko, good quality brand that doesnt rip you off, simple.
Offers somthing for everbody with £100 to £65,000 plus with credor
Mo is getting wrecked in this video
Seikos are awesome, and for most it's the most expensive watch they'll ever buy.
I don’t get all the Seiko hate. They are amazing watches and have only gotten better in recent years
Design. Heritage. Spirit. It has nothing to do with accuracy, value etc. Seiko hasn’t been about value since the 70’s
Seiko is a watch enthusiasts' brand. Seiko always undersells, and over delivers.
Some of their dials are absolutely fantastic.
Right now, I am fixated on their Urushi dials.
🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻
citizen is awfully underrated. my promaster is accurate to within a second per day, which is unbelievable. i'm very lucky tho.
my fugu is the same. i have only had to adjust it for the daylight saving time change. impeccable.
NB-1050 owner here.
I am so happy I bought it instead of the seiko sharp edge.
Better movement and better QC at half the price.
even their entry level 8200 mvt beat Seiko 7s26@@RadicallyGreen
Beat me to it. I've got Royal Marines Super Tough and I love it.
100%. £1000 for a 6R35 movement, getting too cheeky
Do better Seiko
I love the fact that she called out Moe individually, that’s amazing! 😂
Well it seems Moe‘s had it coming.
No matter what kinds of Seiko watches you buy, Seiko watch lasts life time without any problems. That is why I love Seiko watches !!!
My Dad has worn the same one, every day, for 30 years. It’s a quartz, so has had a few battery changes….but still works well and looks smart.
And almost every watchmaker can repair them
The watch yes, the bracelets suck.
Why not google it at work….👀
Seiko make watches in their millions, but wearing one still feels special. That’s hard to replicate. 🤘
I've owned a Seiko quartz for about 35 years. Still going strong, no maintenance, just battery changes.
Watching this wearing my 10 year old, first ever Seiko 5 series watch.
Oh YES! Get in!! Putting my Seiko 5 GMT now because it just feels wrong not wearing a Seiko while replying to these comments!
Must have seikos: samurai, turtle, tuna, and sumo :)
I agree completely! 👏🏻👏🏻
Agreed. I watched that video all along saying the same things. They are absolutely the same and in some ways a better deal.
They already raised prices (without fixing qc issues) before the enormous inflation started. Improvements such as the 6R35 turned out to be less than great. I keep wat I have but moved on to Citizen (JDM) watches and some Bulova watches.
I have over 50 vintage Seikos, mostly chronographs, plus several of their modern divers. It’s an amazing producer of important and historical watches.
I have a seiko chronograph from the 1980’s and I desperately need to have it restored. No idea where to look or start.
The pain of filming an entire set without audio😭 Great video though, hopefully the second take was way faster!
