    Fun Fact:
The game is actually a game ENGINE, with a preinstalled mod pack of three mods.
Devs even stated that players could disable the core game files in the Mods menu, but would need replacements to ensure the game works.
So modders could very well recreate Minecraft in the engine, which could be interesting.

As a longtime VS player it makes me so happy that this game is starting to gain a more broad following, it really has earned it. There will always be Minecraft comparisons, but in my opinion, the two games end up feeling verrrry different! In terms of atmosphere, main gameplay loop and difficulty it actually reminds me a little more of Don't Starve then Minecraft personally.
It's also impressively immersive when playing! I recommend folks give the Immersive First Person mode a try too, you'll be able to see your player model as you act, it gives me such a connection to the world. This is the only survival game that has ever made me stop and appreciate the world I'm in/views. There's also a demo available, highly recommend folks give it a shot!

After playing for three years and having tried 3 major plays I can tell you - this is a game that humbles modern gamers! There is noch cheating a lot of dying and even more of learning and reading! A good portions of luck is needed to get to the point where you would be after 10 hours in Minecraft. Take at least 70 hours to have a stable house and copper tools and enough food for winter and feeding some first bred animals. Be careful and enjoy every moment! (hint: bears will fuck you up very quickly and wolves as well :D)

Really good game, it's super relaxing! Like prepping food for long term storage during winter because they can perish, need a special pot which you make with clay by hand, block per block, then cook it for 24 hours in a firepit then seal the pot with wax from a honey comb from a beehive which you manage yourself then put it in a cellar you build yourself underground. You might think this is overwhelming, It's not! Every step of the way gets that dopamine hit, just like Factorio.
Two things I hate : The enemy mobs(drifters) are bloody terrible, non rewarding and doesn't get that said dopamine hit, I highly recommend disabling them. Just unfun. Just surviving is the bigger challenge.
And second : The devs being adamant on not releasing it on Steam, They don't want to give 30% of their profit to Valve. They aren't thinking about the increase in player they can get from it, Nobody knows about Vintage Story! Steam being the biggest video game market on PC will lead to more visibility which the game badly needs.

the dev actually has said he intentionally keeps it off steam for now, the reason being its an unfinished product and he wants so much more content put in before its even close to a finished whole. i imagine putting it on steam would kind of force him to supercrunch to keep the audience the game would have which isnt healthy or good for anyone. all in all its about not *wanting* the audience yet, not about the 30% revenue loss

Also this game have tons of Modding potential, devs being very helpful on the official Discord.
They have helped bug test mods for modders at time, got a coding question for example?
The Devs will occasionally reply with the answer.
    Oh and the big draw?
Unlike minecraft, updates don't break mods!!!
Or at least most of them, sure you get a warning but unless the directly referenced files get drastically changed the mod has a low chance of breaking.
Some modders from Minecraft have already ported some of their mods to Vintage Story.
For Example.... Vies, creator of Vies Machines, aka the Airship mod. Ported that very mod to VS early on in the modding scene for VS.
Been going on strong since then. He also made one of the first magic mods for VS.
We also have some mods created that are inspired by Minecraft ones...
Like QPTech which contains various Immersive Engineering machinery and technology, also made an amazing Chisel Tool mod that improves the in game chiseling system.
Modders have even... Made a modpack loader, akin to MultiMC.
As well as a Storage Controller akin to the Storage Drawers mod. No storage drawers mod yet, but... We do have a Crate mod, that does work with said controller.
There's also a enderchest mod too, or at least a part of it which works. A Simple Storage Network mod exists called Cosmosis too.
Just imagine what other mods could come to this game...
Tinkers would fit considering the fact the game already has casting system in place, Botania too could fit the game's universe.

This was originally a minecraft mod pack, terrafirmacraft, but when Mojang made incompatible changes it went independent. I've played both the minecraft version and this one. I believe someone at Mojang suggested that the mods go independent when mod compatibility became a big problem a few years ago. The Lawyers had a heart attack! The game is sufficiently different and based on a minecraft engine version that's so old that copyright does not apply. I would not be surprised if Mojang, its millionaire staff or Notch have invested some money into Anego Studios. I know of at least three other minecraft spin off games out there.

4:09 Just to correct you here. It is not most of the rocks that can be knapped into stone tools. In fact, most of the stone in the game are too soft to do so. Only 6 of the 21 different stone types are hard enough to be knapped: Andesite, Basalt, Granite, Peridotite, Flint, & Obsidian.
Flint is slightly different from all those others in that no only can it be found as small stones on the surface like the other five, but when found as deposits either exposed to air on a hillside somewhere or found underground or while mining, it can be gotten from the block it's found in by hand without needing a pickaxe.
Now, even though you can't knap 15 of the softer stone types into tools, you can use them to knap WITH, holding the softer stone in your hand and knapping away at the harder stone placed on the ground.

Something to note is that you swim faster than any other creature in the game, so actually deep water is your friend when it comes to escaping from predators, and actually killing them too if you prefer that approach. Just fill your inventory with spears, lure an animal like a wolf or bear into a (at least 2 blocks deep) pond, then kite them in circles while chucking spears at them until they die.
EDIT: Another thing to note is that if you are playing Wilderness Survival (my preferred game mode) then blocks like Dirt, Gravel, and Sand have gravity and can slide down hills, meaning you wouldn't be able to just dig into the side of a hill to make a home without crushing yourself. I actually forgot you were playing on Standard and got super confused until I remembered that gravity wasn't a standard game setting.

If this was my game I would have used a voxel mesh grid like 7 days to die rather than the cube based voxel game genre. It is so out of style they have basically a step by step walk through and starter project to BEGIN at 75% complete when making a project that looks like this. In fact it's so every day that they have guides about doing it in C++ from scratch here on youtube.

    • @Rhadamant
      @Rhadamant  10 місяців тому

Uhh ... the voxel grid here is actually way more similar to 7DTD than I think you realize, the smallest voxel in this game is TINY, maybe 1/64ths or 1/128ths of the size of the large blocks

    • @computercrazies
      @computercrazies 10 місяців тому

@@Rhadamant - A diagonal grid of diamonds is a little different then a standard grid of cubes. A mesh grid uses manipulated mesh points rather than removing tile/cubes. I can clearly see that the environment is all large cubes, which is an entirely different terrain genre.
I am not sure what the extent of your knowledge is on the subject but the ability to produce an item or placeable that is very small that also has collision has nothing to do with a "grid". Because that item or placeable can move 0.0001 of a pixel does not mean the grid is 0.0001 if you get what I am saying.

This looks neat. It's like a very modded version of Minecraft. The fact that it has similar elements makes it fast to learn, but I like the bushcraft and historical aspects of making things and leveling up in technology. It looks like it would give a lot more gameplay before getting boring/redundant.
