Story Genius is such an interesting workbook for Story Writing! I read John Trubys Anatomy of Story and Save the Cat writes a Novel and neither helped me starting to plan. But the Idea to focus solemnly on the Protagonist and his past and Worldview etc helped so much, because everything that seemed to be important for my story just came out of my Protagonists past! John Truby always emphasizes, that a story should grow organically and thats exactly what Lisa Cron helps doing with her approach. Loved the book!
Totally agree! I find myself reaching No for Story Genius any time I’m trying to develop a new idea and Anatomy of Story/STC when I’m more focused on structuring the story well either in my outlining or revision phases. Love that there are resources that resonate at different times in the writing process 🙌🏻
I was anxiously awaiting this video ever since you first mentioned it. Watching you go through the whole book got me excited (and nervous) to keep going!
Excellent! Your thinking is eerily like my experience. I do think Story Genius brings a skill set that other craft books rush over, or only point to. I'm pretty sure every writer has a slightly different 'right way.' I'm so thankful to authors who take the time to share their explorations.
I just went through and read Story Genius last night and now I'm rethinking everything! I do think I want to combine this with Saves the Cat in some way! I think that one in particular is about the internal journey a lot. I think my biggest task will be going back through my main novel and find ways to use this methodology to improve it! Great video, I loved seeing you reading through this right as I read it!
It’s really such a good book to get you thinking about your characters! Paired with Save the Cat it’s a lot easier for me to plot the internal and external arcs together now. Good luck using it!
Lost me when you switched out of Story Genius into plotting. I thought that the point was to work through the book. I wanted to see how someone would use the book since I am doing the book. Started off really good though. Hope your book goes well
Thank you so much for sharing this! I Might need to check this book out... the whole "outline as you go about 5 chapters in advanced" thing is something I legitimately am doing on my own to get through my current WIP. And yes; I also fix things as I go (And yes it feels counter-productive at times, but I'm fairly happy with how solid my first draft is coming out, even though I'm somewhat pantsing it.) Reading this might help me explain it to people who don't understand how my process works, and maybe explain it to myself too, haha.
It was an interesting process to try as someone who normally fully outlines before starting to write lol. I thought it was a great read and would definitely recommend it!
@@LeahRummel It sounds it! I've been moving to more into pantsing/less outline in advanced as I've gotten more comfortable with writing, but it is hard to explain to people how it works. I think I will try to pick the book up before starting my next project that's currently floating around in my head, but that will be a few months to a year down the road, with my writing pace/length of current WIP. ^_^

It’s such an interesting process! How far have you got into it?
@@LeahRummel Honestly not that far past the origin scene chapter bc of work, but I'm hoping to get a lot more read this weekend!

Exactly! I like to pick and choose what works for me from the different craft books or other writer’s experience :)
Thanks this was really helpful. Especially the section on misbelief.
Yes I love story genius 😍
