I already knew how to do this job. But always good to watch someone with more years under their belt to catch a few tips.
Very informative and well put together video that a novice weekend mechanic or salty experienced mechanic can refresh his/ her skills with and learn from. Thanks for posting and sharing.
Thank you. I removed my velvet drive last season and wish I’d thought to loosen the trunnions bolts on the motor mounts. What a difference that makes!

Enjoying your videos! God bless!
Thanks, Trying to get Part 2 on the trans swap up tomorrow
Great info
What do you torque the installation bolts to?
I have a Paragon P45 on the back of my engine hangout from 6 x M10 bolts. Should it have a rubbing mounts to take some of the 300lbs weight?
Not familiar with that gear, consult with Paragon on this one.
This is a bit above my pay grade. What would a boat service place charge for this, parts and all? Assume the boat is a late '80s or early '90s MC Prostar 190. Is it even smart to look at one of those with a bad trans?
On an older boat do you for sure need to pivot the engine? Doing damper plate replacement and don't want to pivot engine if I don't have to. Thanks for any info~
All depends on the boat, if you have room then no you don't have to pivot the engine, if you are avoiding pivoting because you don't want to re-aligne the engine to the shaft, you are mistaken, a shaft re-alignement is required regardless.
@@rontanis1024 Thank you Ron. I can support the engine with straps but if I don't have to raise the engine with straps to get trans/bell housing off I would prefer that.
Got the new plate installed. Lifted engine & trans with straps. Removed trans & bell housing as an assembly and replaced drive plate. Re-aligned assembly, bolted up and good to go. Thanks Ron for all your helpful videos.
Should the drive shaft just pull away after you take out the 4 coupling bolts. Or do you need to loosen the packing nut thanks?
No you do not need to loosen the packing nut, in a perfect world the shaft will slide back with little effort after removing the 4 coupling bolts...we don't live in a perfect world, here are some hick-ups...severe out of alignment can cause the coupling halves to bind together requiring persuasion to separate, can also cause major resistance for a shaft rubbing hard against the shaft log, again caused by major alignment problems. There will be some resistance from the strut & packing gland, a little soapy water sprayed there will ease that.
@@rontanis1024 thanks, i was able to get it.
Hi Ron Tanis, recently bought a 1990 pro am ski boat with a 350 5.7l mercury in it and it has no forward gear. Randomly works or if not at all. Any ideas ? Velvet drive ?
Things to do first, fluid level, check immediately after shut -off before drain-back from the trans cooler, should be at the high mark, after it sits for a minute it may be 1/2" above the high mark, this is normal. Remove shaft cable & manually move shift lever at the trans from full forward , neutral, reverse while in the water, if normal now you have a cable/throttle issue.
Where is part 2??
