    You brought back memories of a lava tube exploration I did in late 2020 and a large 50+ lb chunk of the ceiling fell on my head as I was exiting a crawling passage. Drove my forehead into my lumecube light I had attached to the GoPro. Got a nice gash in my head, a concussion, and a torn rotator cuff from the violent compression. That was 6 hours into an 11-hour solo adventure. The 25' climb out the exit wasn't much fun. Then the 2+ hours hiking back to my jeep. Not sure I'd trust old mines that are flooded.

      What a crazy memory! Glad you made it out. This was by far the most sketchy mine I have ever entered. I trust caves a lot more not to fall on my head.

      Good we don't have mines around here or I would probably be exploring them too.@@CaveChronicles

      @@lavapix Revisiting this comment, still amazed and sorry for the late reply but curious. Were you recording when that happened? Were you knocked out? Why were you solo, especially so deep? I've been lucky enough to never get a major injury underground. Would be really cool to explore lava tubes some time, I'd guess they are a nightmare to light because of how dark the walls would be.

      @@CaveChronicles Yes, I was recording. Its near the end of part 3 of what I call the #4 section of this tube system. I explain what happened in the description. I've been doing this system solo 99% of the time for over 30 years. But, I have two different people who know my entry and exit points and also a timeframe on when to start worrying if they haven't heard from me. Because I'm underground for so long in this section I value the duration of my light sources over brightness for better video. I have 24 hours of light available. Soon I'll be showing this system to a couple of trustworthy younger guys so that it can be protected long after I'm gone. The toughest part of these lava tubes are the sharp a'a lava floors and the numerous collapse sections. Here's the link to that video. They're all long videos as I try convey what it's like being on these hikes.

      @@CaveChronicles Forgot to mention. No, I wasn't knocked out but definitely stunned 🙂I just said, That hurt and continued on my exit journey. I've done so many crazy long adventures at the volcano and no matter how prepared you are injuries happen. Surviving them is 99% attitude. Never freak out.

    Uffda. You’re the kind of person one would want around in an emergency. Head buried under rocks and you still remained so calm.
    It was really neat to see old photos and video clips of your previous visit to this mine alongside the current shots.
    Glad you both made it out safely.

    You guys should take a high-powered UV flashlight in some of them tunnels when I was a child we would do that in smaller tunnels and you will be tripped out at the different rocks that you see glowing all over the tunnel? Sometimes depending on where you're at

      Good idea, wish I did!
      It isn't this mine, but here is some pictures I took of glowing calcite in an iron mine (phosphorescence) imgur.com/a/Cu5lu49

    So grateful you’re okay! It was a beautiful mine, but definitely not worth you getting hurt. You are always what is most important. At the same time, I’m extremely impressed at how incredibly calm you were when you were covered in rocks.

    You literally aren't kidding, that's the sketchiest mine iv ever been in. We hand dug that unsupported tunnel into it, and felt sketch the entire time digging it for 13 days.

    • @CaveChronicles
      @CaveChronicles  4 місяці тому

      Yeah, the tunnel really did collapse on my head on the way out.
      I remember when we first finally hit air flow and how hard it blew. Sad to see it closing itself up already after 2 years. It's a death wish to go in now, way worse than this even. I got lucky.

    This atmosphere has strong signals of being, unsafe, off limits, dangerous, poisonous, unstable, sketchy and just overall like collapsing hazardous waste field , and I don´t mean in good tempting way, but loosing life for nothing way

    At the very least get an O2 monitor and take it with you on your adventures. It will save your life one day. Go ahead and bet me.

    • @CaveChronicles
      @CaveChronicles  8 місяців тому +3

      I am going to get my own 4 gas monitor soon, they are pretty expensive but worth it. I usually just have been with people that had one. I knew this mine had some hydrogen sulfide, and low O2 from my past trips though.

    • @CraftySasquatch
      @CraftySasquatch 8 місяців тому +2

      @@CaveChroniclesUnderstood. At the very least please get an O2 monitor asap!
      You guys go into some gnarly areas and yes they are flowing with air but you guys go into pockets that have zero air flow and one of these days you will take a break in one of those pockets of no air and pay the ultimate price.
      I'm not familiar with your region but you might not even need a 4 gas monitor. Certain regions don't get any of the other harmful gasses, worth looking into.
      Remember! Safety 3rd!
      Fun and adventure are always 1 and 2.

    You can see the air quality using your flashlight.. in areas where air quality is bad you'll see dirt and particles very thick in the beam of the flashlight. Those areas are usually harder to breath in.. when you guys were in the rafts there was less dirt in the air cause a lot was being grabbed and trapped by the water.

    • @CaveChronicles
      @CaveChronicles  8 місяців тому

      I believe that was water vapor, the mine had low oxygen and some hydrogen sulfide which would be invisible. There was some dust especially in the entrance tunnel, but this mine was damp enough that not much got kicked up.
