This is the original lookout mountain cave, its directly below ruby falls. The elevator was sealed off from traveling to the bottom so there is no legal way to enter this cave.

To think them dates were times before flashlights so they had to been down there with candles My great grandfather told me they used to use candles holding them to the ceilings and making their names with the candles

The black writing on the walls, the stuff that looks burned on, that's done with an old miners headlamp that runs on calcium carbide. When you add water to it it generates acetylene which is then burned to create light.
Miners would use the flame to sign their name and date in the areas that they worked. I actually ran across my grandfather's name while watching a mine exploring video from the Nevada, California, Arizona area where he was a prospector/miner in-between the World Wars.
As an aside, it's nice to see you guys using hard hats. Bouncing your head off the "back," which is what miners call the ceiling, sucks. But having a small chunk of rock fall on you will at best give you a nasty headache, but it can also fracture vertebrae and at worst it can kill. I see far too many people running around with nothing but a hat on, so I always commend those that take the initiative to wear "protection"

The last people that explored this ended up in jail for trespassing. The Railroad has their own police force, and they don’t play around.

I googled that and it says this on the Nation Park Service site:
"5th Cavalry Regiment was organized during the summer of 1862 with men recruited in the central section of Kentucky. It was attached to Buford's Brigade and skirmished in Tennessee and Kentucky. Later it fought with J.H. Morgan, and many of its members were captured at Buffington Island on July 19 and the remaining part at New Lisbon on July 26, 1863. The regiment was not reorganized. Its commanders were Colonel D. Howard Smith, Lieutenant Colonels Churchill G. Campbell and Preston Thomson, and Major Thomas Y. Brent, Jr."
Kinda haunting to think they were probably hiding down there to not be captured or killed.
I will say it seemed a ton of them were from Ohio that were in that cave in Civil War times. If that means anything.

@@CaveChronicles -- Morgan's raid was a wild adventure in July of 1863. He took his brigade across Tennessee and Kentucky, then foolishly crossed the Ohio into Indiana. Thousands of Union militia held all the cities, Union cavalry tried to run him down, and he couldn't get back across the river because all the fords were guarded by Union gunboats. Won a couple of skirmishes, then got chased all across Indiana and Ohio and had to scatter his command. He took some prisoners, but he and most of his men were collected and captured themselves.

Since you can hear a power source/elevator running; who pays the monthly electric bill and where do they receive that bill I wonder? 🤨
Inquiring minds would like to know...
