Great review as always. I’ve been using the XT5 for a year now and I really love being able to crop a tad bit more than with the XT3. Yes, it gets noisy above ISO1600 but I haven’t found shooting up to 3200 to be a problem. The XF33 is a perfect lens for this camera. Bright and razor sharp. Cheers!
It's worth noting that while you need a very sharp lens to take advantage of the 40mp sensor, it does not mean that pictures shot with older lenses won't look as sharp. I've fallen into this line of thinking before. 😆 It just means you can't crop in and maintain the same amount of detail with, say, the 18-55mm kit lens as you would with the 18mm f1.4 WR. Pictures will look sharp as shot or with a slight crop.
Yeah. These things that get repeated by reviewers - while true and relevant - can be misleading to average users who are seldom if ever going to actually use the high resolution for anything except occasional cropping.
@@thecaveofthedeadI think it's the mark of a lazier review. The old 56 1.2 has a whole new lease of life on the x-t5. Never thought I'd shoot action on it at f1.2 with eye detect after I nearly hurled it out the window in frustration at the AF when on the x-t2 shooting still life. And can't say I felt it lacked sharpness. If anything the newer lenses are too sharp unless dialing in some negative sharpness in camera or in post. Maybe older lenses that were less sharp to start with will suffer more, but I've not noticed any issues, only added benefits, using the older lenses on the x-t5. I think there's a lot about the review that shows that a few days isn't enough, especially if you aren't familiar with simple things about the camera like adjusting the settings to suit the lens (negative sharpness or clarity of it's too sharp). Legitimate to point these things out, but need to highlight both sides of the coin. Like that the noise that is present a bit sooner than a lower MP x-t3 is fine like film grain, and this together with the added detail for many might be preferable.
And let's not mention the huge improvement to upscaling images that AI has brought such that if you need to print 20x24 from a 10MP camera you can get great results if the original image was sharp.@@PixPete

Earlier this year I bought the X-H2, same sensor and generally very similar camera, sold it and switched to the Nikon Z8 after 6 months. The AF would constantly confirm focus (green box), but when I check the images, as soon as there's any movement, the hit rate seriously tanks. Especially with long lenses, for wildlife, it's absolutely terrible, and you have to take dozens of shots, hoping that one is properly sharp on the eye of the subject. Granted, the X-H2s would've probably been the better camera for me, but I think that I'm really not asking too much for a 2100€ camera here. For a brief time I owned both cameras, and the Z8 (way more expensive, I know) outperformed it in every way. Considering there's only a 5 MP difference in resolution, the image of the X-H2 looked pretty bad in comparison, in most cases.
Agree, although with firmware 3.0 it’s much improved, they ruined the xh2s af with a firmware then claimed to have fixed it with firmware 5.0 but still not great, defo not for sport or wildlife. On the whole latest fujis as pro tools are a tad disappointing which saddens me to say
Hi Christopher. Good review as always. I do bird photography, currently using a Sony RX10MK4 ( which is flexible - but only has a 20MP sensor) or a Fuji XT4 with a XF100 to 400 lens. If you were doing bird photography, which camera / lens combination would you choose for distant shots? I'm thinking about the XT5, but is the autofocus as good as Canon or Sony for bird photography? Thanks
Nice balanced review I thought, its a camera that’s been at the top of my Christmas list all year, it has all the features I loved on my old X-T3 plus a few more like the IBIS and bigger battery. The 40 mega-googles is nice but one doesn’t necessarily need to always shoot at highest resolution, or do you? Anyways thanks for posting.
Have the X-T5, was looking forward to 10-bit HEIF images, but it seems that no software supports it. Disappointing. Apple Photos can handle only lossless (compressed?) RAF, which I would use anyway. Maybe eventually … ?
The fuji 26mp sensor is much better for every case where you don't need 40mp images. Better low light, faster sensor readout, better video quality etc. Nice review!
Much prefer the colours of the 40MP sensor over the 26MP. The 24MP X-trans III and now 40MP X-trans V offer the best colours out of all the sensors. The x100v and x-t3 just weren't as vibrant as the previous generation or the 40MP. Low light shots compared to the 26MP are pretty similar up to iso 6400, with the noise smoother on the 40MP sensor, so even when you do go higher than that it's more like film grain than the noise noise of the previous gen. More detail in those low light shots also. The 40MP also means for those that shoot or like to keep the jpegs where possible that you have a free lens in the bag for every lens you have with you as you have use of the digital teleconverter. Having had cameras with the X-trans II, III, IV and V, the II and IV have impressed me the least. Not to say bad at all, but the III and V are just better. Often those that bash the 40MP haven't actually spent any time using one, let alone had the chance to compare over a period of time. Only cause for complaint is the buffer on the x-t5. But this has never been a strong point of the x-t bodies. The x-h2 has a great buffer despite the 40MP sensor, so nothing to do with the sensor, but other aspects.
@@brownbear100Agree, they really nailed the rendering of the 40mp. After having been tempted to go back to FF for a few years, X-T5 with some 1.2/1.4 lenses made me stay with Fuji. X-T5 is so fun and smooth to use!
Apparently the noise is pretty consistent with the older 26mp sensor. People see more noise because they zoom in further with 40mp, if you normalise the images to be the same then the noise levels are comparable. The XT-4 does have slightly better video and the faster sensor readout is definitely a factor.
@@mikethompson3305 I'd go one further and say that up to about 6400 the x-t5 images are smoother viewing the images at the same size. By this point both sensors show some noise, but the smaller pixels of the x-t5 smooths out the rough edges. Not a big videographer and stepping up from the x-t3 the UX alone I find better for video. Imho the xt5 is let down 1st by its 40mp sensor, it may have a nice resolution for studio but wedding and street work need higher iso and that lets it down, xh2s sensor would have been more than enough, and it’s evf again should have been that from the xh2s/xh2. Give me those two options and would have bought a pair of them in a heart heat 🎉❤ it’s buffer is a bit pants as well and for left eye shooters that af on button is stupid placement, the Q menu would be better being switched with it .
Great review, with Photoshop, Topaz etc having the latest AI noise reduction which works wonders i don’t think the noise issue should be such a deal breaker, the advantages now far negate the benefits FF can give you. I would rather have much lighter lenses than going to something like a Canon R5 and forking out double the cash also especially those RF lenses which you need to sell your kidney to obtain.
Thanks for the nice review. I'm a little underwhelmed by the readout speed of the new 40 mp sensor. It really is a noticeable step behind the older 26 mp one.
You know what I just realized. High iso video looks so crappy because of mp4 compression. The sensor noise literally acts like confetti and overwhelms the compression's bitrate. 🤦♂️ I always wondered why high iso video looks worse than high iso pictures
Does boost mode improve your auto focus hits on the T5? Toss a Fuji OIS lens on this and find out how many more shots are winners. Knock the jpeg sharpening down one more notch and keep it there. BTW, I picked up a Laowa 9mm 2.8 and I had continuous IBIS on with my X-H1. It was crazy clown time. And I had boost mode on. I recommend IBIS in shoot only mode with that Daffy Duck of a lens. Otherwise you're in for a ride.
Boost Mode change frequency processor at Maximum Speedy and maintain All Time. Normal Mode is like balanced When you don't use camera Lower clock Speed Economy mode maintain fixed Lower clocks Mainly you notice that the viewfinder, LCD and auto-brightness drops: setting the economy mode lowers both the resolution and the frame rate, especially the moment you take your eye off the viewfinder because it reduces the number of readings per second on the sensor
I may be viewed as a dinosaur, that doesn't worry me. For some reason, I have resisted the move to migrate to one of the more recent, plethora of new bodies released by Fujifilm. Still content with my XT2, the more recent purchase of a S20. Have a collection of quality Fujifilm kit, faster primes, the excellent Viltrox 27 1.2 and the Sigma 56 1.4. Video is of no interest to me. Will remain very happy with my gear, and really don't see the need to fall into the gas trap !
I regret that you attribute so much importance to video filming for this camera which is clearly designed for photography. For video, there is the X-H2.
I don't detect any recognition by you that Fuji is a company that has product families and that companies with product families have to differentiate them. Most reviews that I've seen have realized that this most recent release of the X-H and X-T product families have gotten a lot more differentiated in features and price. The X-T5 is a photography camera with video capability whereas the two X-H2 cameras are now the flagship video cameras with photography features. Your "niggles" are mostly on the video features. For someone like me who will rarely (if ever) use the video features, I could care less about the video side of the X-T5. I'm glad they are good because maybe someday I'll surprise myself and shoot some video. Fuji clearly "dumbed down" the video features in part to align with the lower price of the X-T5 vs. its cousins. These are business decisions and I suspect smart ones. Now we know the strengths and limitations of the X-T5 but I think your "I would have wished for" comments are largely immaterial because if Fuji is listening (as I'm sure they will be given that they loaned you the camera), I doubt they are taking too many notes on your niggles. These aren't oversights -- they were conscious business decisions.
I'd wait at least one more generation. There are too many complaints about overheating plaguing the xs20, xh2 and the xt5. And I'm not talking about overheating due to video shooting, but stills, which is unacceptable.
I don’t know about the Nikon but you’ll need to consider the lenses too. Fuji offers some high quality, compact lenses. I shoot with Sony fullframe also but don’t like the size of those lenses at all. Too big and heavy.
@@Brian444 Those looking for these types of cameras generally don't want to take a lot of lenses. And Nikon has the Nikkor Z 26, 28, 40mm which are good lenses for street photography. And they are very small lenses. And if I want better lenses for other types of subjects, I would have the Z 35, 50 and 85mm f1.8 S which are large ultra-high lenses for other purposes. I wouldn't give up full frame because of the quality at high ISO and the aesthetics that a full frame offers. I preferred a Canon R6 Mark II. Everyone loves the tactile X-T cameras, I certainly do. But from a practical point of view they are terrible. You need two fingers to change the ISO and exposure compensation. The shutter speed dial is even worse, where you need another dial to actually set your shutter speed to 1/3rd of a stop. The grip is worse, to the point where you need to buy a grip-extender to hold it with any comfort. None of this matters, there is a huge market for these, because it looks cool and fun. Hell I would almost buy one, just to look at of course
I actually use the front and rear dials when I'm shooting, but then a largely shoot using the viewfinder. The top dials don't get so much use. It is a cracker.

Show me a camera without a few niggles ? I've used my X-T5 for just over a year. I have used others (medium format). For my requirements it has been pretty awesome, particularly value for money !!! Outstanding value for money, I think. I enjoyed your video, it seemed to me you have an appreciation for Fuji. Nice work, thanks.
Who is Ji ?
Xt5 vs xh2 full comparison pls
Great review, with Photoshop, Topaz etc having the latest AI noise reduction which works wonders i don’t think the noise issue should be such a deal breaker, the advantages now far negate the benefits FF can give you. I would rather have much lighter lenses than going to something like a Canon R5 and forking out double the cash also especially those RF lenses which you need to sell your kidney to obtain.
Waiting for Nikon zf review
Fuji resale prices are annoying. As for the X-T5 I'm not into that body style and will MAYBE wait for the next X-pro or X-E camera.....
Black Friday deals are on at the moment.
Wanted to agree with you but some local seller just put up an X-T3 for €550. Hoping it's not at 150k clicks and I'm definitely buying
@@kaneclements7761good luck finding an xe4, xpro or x100
Bazinga!
Wish the new Nikon ZF had 40mp and that tilt screen...
well yeah... no retro style but you are pretty much describing the Nikon Z7-line
How's the colour processing on this? Some times colour on Fuji cameras is a bit out of control no matter the settings.
a review exactly a year out
Does boost mode improve your auto focus hits on the T5? Toss a Fuji OIS lens on this and find out how many more shots are winners. Knock the jpeg sharpening down one more notch and keep it there. BTW, I picked up a Laowa 9mm 2.8 and I had continuous IBIS on with my X-H1. It was crazy clown time. And I had boost mode on. I recommend IBIS in shoot only mode with that Daffy Duck of a lens. Otherwise you're in for a ride.
Boost Mode change frequency processor at Maximum Speedy and maintain All Time.
Normal Mode is like balanced When you don't use camera Lower clock Speed Economy mode maintain fixed Lower clocks
Mainly you notice that the viewfinder, LCD and auto-brightness drops: setting the economy mode lowers both the resolution and the frame rate, especially the moment you take your eye off the viewfinder because it reduces the number of readings per second on the sensor
I’ve seen a lot of reviewers say the X-T5 has build quality problems and feels cheap
I do a lot of shooting, so maybe this is one for me. I shoot about 25K shots a year xD
Arent you a litlle late with this Review? 🤔🤔🤔
I'd wait at least one more generation. There are too many complaints about overheating plaguing the xs20, xh2 and the xt5. And I'm not talking about overheating due to video shooting, but stills, which is unacceptable.
The same price as a full frame Nikon zf. I prefer the Nikon because it is full frame.
Isn't the Nikon Zf $300 more?
I don’t know about the Nikon but you’ll need to consider the lenses too. Fuji offers some high quality, compact lenses. I shoot with Sony fullframe also but don’t like the size of those lenses at all. Too big and heavy.
@@StymyParsley
In Brazil it is the same price.

Those looking for these types of cameras generally don't want to take a lot of lenses. If this Nikon DF had come out sooner, I would have bought it instead of the Canon. The only camera I would buy, even if it was APS-C, would be a Fujifilm X100 with a Fujifilm X-H2 sensor and viewfinder. In other words: A Fujifilm X-H2 with the appearance of the Fujifilm X100 with interchangeable lenses.
Fuji X-T3 is still the best fuji. The IBIS X-T5 is for photos only. For the video, it looks like a complete lack of stabilization. And that 40 mp at APC-S. Who really need it?
fuji is getting too expensive for aps-c and quality of autofocus (compared to canon/sony)
So go buy a Canon or Sony then.
@@michaelyolch79 no spending on camera 2k, if i would i would go full frame for sure. have a plenty of fuji lenses, which need to be sold .. i'm alright with x-s10. just no upgrade path in the future
@@djstuc for pricepoint of x-s10? no, i think they won't
@@djstuc what? s-20 costs 460eur more than s-10, and that is cheapest current fuji camera. x-t40 etc are discontinued.. are You real?
@@djstuci read nothing, have no clue, i see what is available on amazon and in general one article where fuji president said that fuji needs to be more premium
Fuji fanboys may not like this video. Chris said "Xt5 AF isnt quite reliable" which means AF of xt5 is unreliable and unaccurate, way behind other brands. Lucily, fanboy can blame on the lens. They seem never accept the truth AF of fuji suck and fuji underrates 2/3 stop of iso, tho.
Grip is fine without an extender
Wow a grip extender! Goodness that must be a terible inconvienience
I actually use the front and rear dials when I'm shooting, but then a largely shoot using the viewfinder. The top dials don't get so much use. It is a cracker.
@@stefanbadass5357 I Don't think he has the 5. Maybe a T3.
@@Cryr213 He can't be holding the 5.
