You could also mention the statue connected to the Colombo statue, the squirrel with a gun behind it. :) The squirrel got there years after from a guerrilla artist named Misha Mihály Kolodko who have lot's of small and funny statues all around the city of Budapest.
Wonderful statue, captured Colombo perfectly, including that bemused expression. I would like to visit Budapest anyway, if circumstances (my own) permitted. This statue would be a must see! Poe fell out for a time, now his statues are draws. Same could happen for this one. It is human, welcoming, and reminds me of one of my uncles.
I know it's a small thing but thank you for not only knowing what "bemused" means, but actually using it. It's a good old word that deserves to stretch its legs outside of ignorance and pedantry.
I love it, I just discovered this. The statue is very well sculpted as well, I love how it’s a little scene with him and his dog. Even if you didn’t know about the Actor, his dubious connection to a rebound author, or the fictional character it’s a charming and tasteful scene anyone could relate to
I think the bust of Zappa by one of the library branches in Baltimore MD is odd. Now he was born here and I seem to recall reading that his mother was a librarian. What's odd is that a bust was first created for his fan club in Lithuania. Some time later they had the original sculptor create a second bust and they gifted that to Baltimore. I think there's an entry on the AO website for it.
You missed one funny and cool detail. Behind the Colombo statue to the left near the green transformer box is a mini statue of a suicidal squirrel that a “renegade sculpture” artist Mihaly Kolodko. It is supposed to be the crime Columbo is investigating. There are nearly 20 other mini statues hidden around Budapest poking fun at various cultural or geographical topics!
"troubling modern politics of Hungary" ... "Preserving Hungarian culture and history is important" I can't tell if you're bamboozled or you're trying to do the bamboozling.
Well, actually! Tearing down the Stalin statue was one of the highlighst of the 1956 Revolution. Also after 1989 nearly all statues from the socialist era were removed. The most notable ones were moved to a Statue Park near the edge of the city. It is a weird place.
I live here and I didn't know half of these things! I really admire how well you looked into such an obscure thing ;) - and how informative and respectful the video is
Thank you for the terrific piece. I'm just blown away. I mean my wife thinks it's a fantastic honor. ....Oh just one more thing, have you been to Bucharest? Don't want to give it away but you'll be tickled pink
Yes, this, this is what I want, I miss these sort of video essays about cities and buildings and weird statues, especially like the 15 minute videos, which used to be onsite but thats a lot of money both in travel and production so fair but still that general vibe being back yes yes yes
Let us know what television character you think should be immortalized in bronze! Personally, we would vouch for Agent Dana Scully. But that's just us.
You missed the Worm statue by Danube, it's from the "The Great Fisherman" :) And Carlo Pedersoli (aka Bud Spencer) also got a statue! There is a park for old statues too, look it up, it's called "Memento Park"
"Aw geez, I was solving dis case in Buhdapest, and wadda you know, one minute I'm thinking 'bout where to go for lunch and da next I'm incased in bronze! guess the locals feared my powa. What'll Mrs Columbo think when I come home like dis?"
Occupied by Soviets? What did that suppose to mean? You were showing the monument to the heroes that freed the country from Nazi and Soviets helped to rebuild Budapest after Nazi bombardment.
I stayed at Falk Miksa when I was in Budapest, saw the statue but had no idea who it was. Even now I had to google it, probably because I'm not American.
Good video, but you didn't tell us why the statute is there. There's also an interesting political backstory to Columbo being shown in Hungary that your viewers would have loved to hear.
Sorry, There Was No TV Movies Before The Series ~ Peter Falk Starred In 13 Seasons Of Columbo And They Were All Part of The NBC Mystery Movie With The Snoop Sisters, McMillan And Wife, Banacek, Hec Ramsey, McCloud, Quincy, M.E., Amy Prentiss, & Tenafly To Name A Few . Then Peter & Columbo Moved To The ABC Saturday Night Mystery Movie With Jaclyn Smith's Christie Cromwell, Burt Reynolds B L Stryker And Telly Savalas's Kojak.
Why? To give me a reason to go to Budapest- obviously. Is there a country with a Golden Girls statue? I’ll take a statue of any one of the Holden Girls or preferably an ensemble piece.
He is probably there to solve a great mystery: a most curious case of a squirrel committing suicide nearby: welovebudapest.com/en/2018/06/13/mysterious-death-in-budapest-can-columbo-solve-it/ Is it a suicide or is it a murder? Is it a squirrel or is it a meerkat? So many questions...
Oh, Lucille Ball for sure! In one of her more impish moments as Lucy. Lily Tomlin in any of her priceless character sketches. Lieutenant Uhura. Wonder Woman! Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Xena! Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan. There's more, that's enough to start with.
Wise-ass?? He's literally not a wise-ass. He's the first name to pop to mind when one asks "who's totally not a wise-ass." Now, if you mean that he's keeping his cards close to his chest intellectually and largely playing dumb in order for self-important, pompous murderers to not worry about his investigating until it's too late... that's not being a wise-ass. A wise-ass is totally the opposite of that, a person who is trying to puff up their perceived intelligence. Anyway... yeah.
"This prison of bronze cannot hold Columbo forever"
Beat me to it
"My wife prefers cast iron... but you know how it is."
I stole this
He small.
Dog is regular sized but I’m the size of a tortellini
I’m sending you to the Columbo dimension
This prison of bronze cannot hold Colombo forever
Trapped in an eternal state of existing and not existing. All possible between the never ending bounds of the Columbo Dimension.
"Just one more thing..." Columbo is awesome...
Uh, just one more thing, Peter Falk was a really good actor, and a fun person! Okay, that might have been two more things. 🤣
hahahahaha ! When detective Columbo says this to you , it usually means you're about to get busted .
You could also mention the statue connected to the Colombo statue, the squirrel with a gun behind it. :) The squirrel got there years after from a guerrilla artist named
Misha Mihály Kolodko who have lot's of small and funny statues all around the city of Budapest.
having someone explain the character columbo with mephisto polka in the background is such a bizarre intersection of my interests

We definitely do! Good memory. www.atlasobscura.com/places/frank-zappa-bust
That one's way better than the one in Germany
the better question is why isn't there a Columbo statue in every city in every country?
Columbros. We keep winning.

I can't tell if you're bamboozled or you're trying to do the bamboozling.
Budapest must not have folks tearing down statues every time opinions change.
Well, actually! Tearing down the Stalin statue was one of the highlighst of the 1956 Revolution. Also after 1989 nearly all statues from the socialist era were removed. The most notable ones were moved to a Statue Park near the edge of the city. It is a weird place.

Ah, we try to help where we can! :) Thanks for the lovely comment. Swing by to see where we'll go next week!
Thank you for the terrific piece. I'm just blown away. I mean my wife thinks it's a fantastic honor. ....Oh just one more thing, have you been to Bucharest? Don't want to give it away but you'll be tickled pink
Knowing this comforts my soul greatly. Thanks :)
That is so amazingly odd...I love it! I watched the show as a kid. Brings back memories. 👍❤️🤗
What a ridiculously intriguing video. Loved it
It’s 2022 and I still love Columbo damn I miss that man
For a start, thank you for spelling Budapest correctly.
Yes, this, this is what I want, I miss these sort of video essays about cities and buildings and weird statues, especially like the 15 minute videos, which used to be onsite but thats a lot of money both in travel and production so fair but still that general vibe being back yes yes yes
Stay tuned! We've got more coming down the pipeline.
At one point, it SEEMED that Columbo was going to name his doggy "Fido", as suggested to him by his vet.
I think I'm going to binge watch some Colombo. 🕵️♂️
Great idea .
Let us know what television character you think should be immortalized in bronze! Personally, we would vouch for Agent Dana Scully. But that's just us.
Dana Scully is a good choice. I would go with Al Bundy or Wednesday Addams though.
Wednesday! Yes, of course!
The female crew of Baywatch. While dressing. :D
Xena
I'd go with Hercule Poirot, and also Jean-Luc Picard
I’m so happy that statue exists.
The sculptor did a good job.
The Fonz from Happy Days in milwaukee. And just a short walk to the Safe House restaurant. Whats the password to the safe house?
He's there I think, because he's a blue collar icon, and those with blue collar roots care about blue collar icons. I'm glad I saw this!
The phrase is "working class".
You missed the Worm statue by Danube, it's from the "The Great Fisherman" :) And Carlo Pedersoli (aka Bud Spencer) also got a statue!
There is a park for old statues too, look it up, it's called "Memento Park"
Columbo NEVER reached with his hand that far up on his head.
Whaaat?!?! How cool is that! Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work! Oh, one more thing...
Great now I have to visit Budapest, God damn it, and just one more thing, thank you for posting this.
"Aw geez, I was solving dis case in Buhdapest, and wadda you know, one minute I'm thinking 'bout where to go for lunch and da next I'm incased in bronze! guess the locals feared my powa. What'll Mrs Columbo think when I come home like dis?"

What a great video, thank you!
Great video!
I will visit this statue someday. 🐾
I stayed at Falk Miksa when I was in Budapest, saw the statue but had no idea who it was. Even now I had to google it, probably because I'm not American.
Hopefully, we helped clear a little bit of that mystery up for you :)
Питер Фальк достойный человек!молодцы что памятник поставили!))
Good video, but you didn't tell us why the statute is there. There's also an interesting political backstory to Columbo being shown in Hungary that your viewers would have loved to hear.
Very cool.
Just one more thing,,,,,,,im watching Short Fuse!
1968 to 2003 actually
There is also a Bud Spencer Statue in Budapest. Hungarians have good taste for entertainment.
The true Italian-American Hero.
@Good Morning So what? There are plenty of Italian-Americans who are Jews as well.
Increasingly obscure!
There is also a statue to Bud Spencer :)
Is that coming, perchance?
Nobody knows Bud Spencer in the US...
I’ve heard that nearby there’s also a statue of a Squirrel with a gun... I can’t find anything on that though.
This makes me so happy you don't even know
it's weird because face-wise, it looks nothing like peter falk. the nose is completely wrong, and that largely makes the face what it is.
Columbo is just Dostoyevsky's Porfiry made American.

I vote for Captain Kirk of the Starship Enterprise to be the next bronze statue .
Wise-ass?? He's literally not a wise-ass. He's the first name to pop to mind when one asks "who's totally not a wise-ass."

Anyway... yeah.
Cool
Dafaq he said Budapesht, i love him
But his pronunciation of magyar was brutal.
Bud Spencer one is much better.
The Zidane statue
Not possibly -Probably! I
Now no american soldiers tomb in italy ( che lingua Barbara e di merda )
Whut
Troublesome politics of todays hungary? what are you talking about?
Sadly, in the USA historic statues are canceled.
That s creepy
You didn’t include a single “one more thing” in your script? For shame!
