  • How to eliminate the annoying low coolant warning on your dash and the level of the coolant tank is full. We will show you step by step how to replace the factory defected tank that has been going bad on the 2017 to 2019 Silverado Pickup trucks, especially the diesel trucks. Help with the channel and become a subscriber, it doesn't cost you anything and it helps a lot of people with future do-it-yourself videos.
    Tools that you will need:
    10 mm socket.
    Plyers.
    Flat screwdriver.
    3/8 drive rachet.
    3/8 drive extension / 1 short & 1 long.
    A Bucket to catch the old coolant and protect your pets from being poisoned by the coolant.
    Small bungee cord or rope or string.
    Shop towel or rags.
    Black spray paint in case there is some rust under the battery tray.
    Electric grease ( a very small amount).
    1 gallon of GM-approved orange coolant.
    1) Safety glasses.
    2) Make sure the vehicle is cool and the old coolant tank is not under pressure.
    3) Release the top black coolant cap, it comes loose counterclockwise. (See the picture on the cap)
    4) Disconnect the negative cable on the driver’s side battery first.
    5) Remove the bracket over the battery on the passenger side.
    6) Disconnect the negative cable on the passenger side battery.
    7) Disconnect the positive battery junction box, it is all 10 mm size bolts, and set aside, don’t lose the screws that hold the 3 wires to the battery bus.
    8) Loosen the hold-down bracket on the passenger side battery, there is no need to remove the driver’s side battery.
    9) Pull straight up and remove the passenger side battery and set it aside in order to gain access to loosen the 10 mm bolt that holds the coolant tank.
    10) Get a bucket or pan big enough to catch the old coolant.
    11) Get some rope or bungee cords to tie up 2 coolant lines in order to avoid air getting into the system
    12) Remove the sensor connector found under the coolant reservoir tank, it is located towards the front of the tank closest to the fender.
    13) Loosen the larger hose first.
    14) Loosen the smaller hose on top of the tank second.
    15) Tie both lines and secure them to the top of the end block with a rope of bungee cord or strong string.
    16) Loosen the 10mm bolt holding the coolant tank, there is only 1 bolt that holds the tank.
    17) Slide the tank forward and then up to remove it from the vehicle.
    18) Get some rags and clean the area, now is the time if you want to spray some rust removal paint on rusted areas.
    19) Open and inspect the new tank for any damages during shipping.
    20) Place the tank with the counter screw cap facing up,
    21) Lay flat over the 2 openings on the bottom, push down, and slide back towards the firewall
    22) Install the 10 mm bolt and tighten, don’t over tighten it.
    23) Connect the sensor wire back under the tank.
    24) Loosen the rope or bungee cord and install the larger hose first and secure the clamp
    25) Install and secure the top smaller hose and secure it with its clamp.
    26) Add GM-approved orange coolant to the tank and fill all the way to the top.
    27) Check for any leaks.
    28) Install the battery back.
    29) Clean the battery terminals
    30) add some electrical grease to the terminal and the 3 wires that connect to the red bus, use very little grease, don’t over grease it
    31) Place the hold-down bolt for the battery
    32) Connect the negative cable on both batteries.
    33) Install the top bracket on the passenger side of the truck
    34) Check for any leaks
    35) Turn the truck on and continue to check for any leaks, let the truck warm-up
    36) Add additional coolant as needed, it will drop on the first use as it fills the backside of the reservoir tank.
    Congratulations! You have now completed the coolant tank replacement on your truck. You have saved $700 by doing it yourself.

    Great video and doesn’t look like a difficult job at all. I’ll be doing this myself soon. This will be my 2nd replacement tank since buying the truck in 2019. Ridiculous GM won’t own up to this problem and offer a fix.

    I like it brother. I do a channel for the same reason. I own a business,
    And I only do the UA-cam videos because they help me when I’m doing something I haven’t done before, and I try to help other people learn how to do things that they haven’t done before. Just a way of paying it forward, nothing more. I don’t make any money, my channel isn’t that big I don’t promote it I just do videos on things. I like to do like work on my car and my trucks and my vehicles, as well as a lot of airgun stuff that I competitively shoot , and people are giving good feedback, so I wanted to give you some as well because people like us who have careers and do this to actually help other people out are few and far between! Liked and subscribed

    I have a 2019 that just started doing this. I have never had any vehicle that warned me about low coolant. Why couldn't you just place a small jumper wire into the unplugged sensor connector and just watch the temperature gauge just like I often look at the other gauges.
    Hot engines start smelling quickly. I hate the idea of spending $100 dollars on a 70,000 dollar truck that just went out of warranty.
    Great video, good job!

      I thought about just jumping the connection with a paper clip and taping it with electrical tape, but decided against it. It is difficult to spend so much money on a truck that has a cheap sensor in the original design. GM redesigned the tank in the 2020 models and did not mention a fix for the bad tanks in the 2017 to 2019 models. The tank I replaced will probably go bad in the future, I don't know of anyone in the aftermarket selling an upgraded replacement tank. for these trucks.
      Thank you for watching my videos.

      @@flperformancegarage4163 there is one on the market (think it's wehrli) with a replaceable sensor, I believe its expensive though.

    • @flperformancegarage4163
      @flperformancegarage4163  2 роки тому

      I looked at getting the Wehril tank, but at a cost of over $500 and no guarantee that the sensor won’t go bad, I decided to save my money. The original tank last about 2-3 years before they go bad, it’s cheaper to replace (OEM) every 2-3 years.

    Just replaced mine and noticed the same thing with your video, lots of loose debris inside the tank some larger than other. My guess is the crap is making the sensor sticking in the down position. Could very well have flushed it and made it useable again.

    • @flperformancegarage4163
      @flperformancegarage4163  2 роки тому

      Thank you for watching my video. It would have been great if the sensor could have been replaced as a separate unit. The tank is a very strong design. I have a feeling I will be back again at this sensor in the future and will try flushing it out and see if it cures the issue. Thank you for the idea.

    I’ve had it with this sensor. Complained to the dealer when it first acted up, they said they fixed it. Highly doubt they changed the tank. Now a year later, same garbage. Gonna try and get it changed under extended warranty. GM dropped the ball on this.

  • @Jeff-ik8in
    @Jeff-ik8in 2 роки тому +1

    simple fix is unpkug the sensor and istall a jumper in the wire. scotch glue and tape it to keep water out and check the coolant when you add def.

    Great video!! Would it be easier to just drain the tank up to the large hose so you don't lose so much coolant and make it easier to catch what's left?

    • @flperformancegarage4163
      @flperformancegarage4163  Рік тому

      You could drain the coolant below the large hose outlet. I was worried about introducing air into the system if I drained it below the lower outlet. Thank you for your comment, it will make me think about it the next time I change the tank again, the tank sensor doesn’t last long. Thank you watching my video.

    2017 l5p at 108k just paid the dealer to replace it again, orignal failed, oem replacement failed, 13 months later just paid to install the 3rd dealer charged 340.00 out the door.

      It’s ridiculous that GM to this date still has not corrected the defect, the new tanks should have a replaceable sensor, instead of the one piece junk that we are all dealing with. I feel your pain, especially the amount of days you are left without a vehicle, because of the dealer.

    2018 Silverado 2500HD LTZ Z71. I’m on a 2000 mile road trip. Low coolant light just came on. Top reservoir is full. Afterwards the check engine light came on. All gauges look good. When yours did this, was it just the low coolant light or did you get a check engine light afterwards?

    • @flperformancegarage4163
      @flperformancegarage4163  2 роки тому

      My low coolant warning on the dash appeared around 34,000 miles. It’s was still under warranty at the time. The second time it came on around 42,000 miles and was not under warranty. I never got a check engine light on for low coolant reservoir. Check to see if there is something else wrong with the truck. These reservoir tanks are garbage, 2020 models changed up the location and design of the reservoir tank.

    I have this issue on a 2018 duramax. So is it an issue of just a bad sensor? Or is it not cycling coolant to the engine? Trying to figure out if I can drive it until I can get it fixed. Thanks!

    • @flperformancegarage4163
      @flperformancegarage4163  2 роки тому +1

      Is the truck overheating? If not, then it’s a faulty sensor inside the coolant tank. I drove my truck for close to 4 weeks as I wait for the new tank to arrive that was on back order.

      $2,000 dollars is a lot of money, rock auto.com has the ACDelco brand for sale under $90 dollars and a new battery around $220 each x2. That equals $530 plus taxes.

    i had one replaced under warranty, 2 years and like 25-30k, the second one only last 9 months, and it is under a two year warranty because they had so many problems with them, i dont know how someone isnt hanging the company that makes these pieces of crap, i got tired of taking it to the dealer , a warranty is only as good as the people and parts behind it, i have to change batteries, so it looks like just add a jumper wire and not waste my time doing all this crap, just to put the same horrible piece of crap tank back in their to have it go bad again, and again...
