    This 100% reclaimed bench is a piece made for Carolina Shoe who is planning on using this for all sorts of different display purposes. They tell me this bench is going to be more well traveled then me. So this was constructed from a total of about 8 pallets (Red Oak, White Oak, Pine, Poplar, Aspen, Mahogany, Cherry, and Maple) along with some threaded rod thru bolts which were abandoned in a dumpster when the fire protection was being renovated at a local retail store. The pallet slats were left rough on the underside, front, and back to add a really cool texture and also some history to the piece. The threaded rod is mostly aesthetic, but it'll also add some structure to the piece. Hand engraved "Carolina" and "Built For Work", finished with 6 coats of lacquer.

    When you hauled out the carving tools, my first thought was "well, now you're just showing off"
    The jig to create the curve in the seat was genius.
    Great work.

    Have you ever tried finding some heavy duty pallets? I found some really good industrial pallets used to ship airplane parts. The frames are 4x4s and the slats are 2x4s. They're difficult to break down without a reciprocating saw, but we'll worth it. A lot of the wood turned out to be maple.

    great build. is the threaded rod totally nesessary?

    • @NOLAMarathon2010
      @NOLAMarathon2010 7 років тому +4

      I don't know the answer to that question, but I'll just speculate. If he didn't have the threaded rod, I don't think the bench would undergo a failure. I do see the possibility, however, of a few of the seat boards or side boards opening up just a tad, due to internal stresses. You saw how during glue-up some of the boards were still not flat even after having gone through the planer. So, the threaded rods were probably provided to prevent that -- open spaces between adjacent boards -- more than to prevent a failure.

    • @JackmanWorks
      @JackmanWorks  7 років тому +2

      Definitely not. Check out my workbench build if you haven't yet, very similar process and I haven't had a single seam pop on me yet and I beat on the thing haha. That was really just for looks.

    • @CodyYankey
      @CodyYankey 7 років тому +5

      +Jackman Works I thought you would have just cut them (threaded rod) to a few inches and just epoxy them in. Risky drilling so far without a drill press. Even with a drill press the job would be kinda scary. lol
      Nice score on the threaded rod as well. That stuff is expensive!

    • @keitho3133
      @keitho3133 7 років тому

      Threaded rod is actually pretty cheap for 3/8"... www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/national-hardware-4000bc-3-8-in-x-16-x-36-in-threaded-rod-zinc?cm_vc=-10005 . It's more at the home centers but probably still not that bad (a lot cheaper than bolts, which tractor supply is also good for if you have one near).

      I'm a local business owner that throws out dozens of pallets...I could PAY someone to haul away my wood trash, or give it away to someone who will reuse them and make great pieces. Hmmm....

    An interesting build and it has given me some ideas, thank you from a UK woodworker shows what little imagination can do to take pallets and make something useful

    Great video, I really like how you used a hand planer on the bench. A lot of beginner woodworkes can't afford a lunchbox planer and I would be interested in learning how to use my hand planer more

    Now that's a nice idea, like what you did there. The curved sled was a nice touch, good skills.

    Very cool. Liked the way you used the router to hollow out the seat top.

    Awesome build. That dishing jig for the router was really cool and all that carving turned out great! Music reminded me a lot of Billy McLaughlin, especially starting around 8:30. Great choice for soundtrack, as usual.

    I make a lot of things out of scrap wood and pallets. I love this project and see a bench for the front hall in the future. Thanks.

    I love this channel. Jackman Works, keep up the terrific work. I love the projects, the attention to detail as to how you are making them, the unobtrusive bits of humor, and the unique music. You're always motivating me to get in the garage and make something.
