Apologies for the incorrect stats at 1.30 - editor's fault. Of course, this is the 991.2 GT3, which has a 4.0-litre engine, producing 493bhp at 8250rpm. Hope you enjoyed the film anyway and do let us know below what cars you'd like to see on the channel in the near future.
Seeing as I've owned an R8 v10 Plus (602hp) and now own a 991.2 GT3, I think I can form a non biased opinion on both. Theres no disputing, the R8 is a great car, but it's nothing like the GT3. They're not comparable cars, they don't serve the same purpose and other than them both being RWD, I'm not sure why they're even being compared in this video. The V10 is an incredible engine, but the dynamics and "feel" of the R8 is pretty rubbish. The dampening on the R8 is literally some of the worst I've ever experienced, that's possibly because pre 2017 R8s (Mine being a late 2016) had issues with the magnetic ride, but it genuinely felt like a bouncy castle at times. The R8 feels artificial, theres no engagement. The GT3's Flat 6 is phenomenal, is it "better" than the V10? I' m not sure, as I say, it's not truly comparable, but it's certainly not worse. As for the feel and handling though, the GT3 is MILES ahead. I have never driven a car that feels as in tune as the GT3. It does baffle me how people who've never owned either, can form such opinions and get so bloody emotional over things.
Its been literally decades now since the 911 had any real competition. Automotive reviewers can't say this of course, they make get cars and make money perpetuating the fantasy that numbers matter. When its really the total driving experience, at which the 911 excels. "I have never driven a car that feels as in tune as the GT3" is something thousands have said of every GT3 going back as long as they've been made. This is usually cliche but in this case its true: The GT3 is in a class of its own.
Tyran Mathurin - I have definitely owned both though - Are you "TheEryk03" or something? I bought an R8, therefore I can't be a 911 fanboy. Great input though, it was invaluable.
I feel like these two cars are completely different animals for different purposes. Yes the GT3 might be the better car might be faster might be all round a better package but the R8 has something special that the GT3 doesnt. It might be that V10 or the less clinical feeling of the car. The GT3 is for someone who wants to go on trackdays and demolish everything and the R8 is for the gentleman who likes to drive but also likes comfort in everyday driving. That said Id personally pick the R8 but that may be just me following my heart not my brain.
The guys in the video definitely seem to agree with you. It's essentially choosing what you like more.. comfort and driveability as a DD, or a track weapon
Definitely agree with the gentleman part for the R8, but the GT3 is anything but clinical lol. The Turbo S is clinical; does everything you want it to do and nothing more. The GT3 is hands down more exciting than that.
Patrick Williment I would rather have the available manual gearbox, it just adds to the amazing driver involvement. Still amazing how you can get both unlike the R8, and even the automatic quality is so good
@Cameron Regester it’s a little pointless to mention he has audis in this particular conversation unless he has an R8 or maybe an RS car. I don’t think owning an A4 gives him any credibility when he says he chooses gt3 over r8 even though he owns an Audi
I think it is quite a hard match when it comes down to it - The GT3 is more evolving and hardcore, but the R8 has more supercar presence - if one actually needs an everyday super/sports car the choice is not so easy - They both have great engines with great soundtracks and they are both more than fast enough for most owners. I would take that GT3 but I do also not have to arrive at the big company door every day with perhaps several hours of travel on the Autobahn...
Audi should make a GT-3 variant of the R8 with the 650 horsepower V10, curb weight of around 3300-3400 lbs, RWD, and remove every creature comfort (no carpets... more carbon fiber... forged aluminum... ).

appreciate what both car companies have to offer. If you actually watched the video you would also see him say that the audi isn't trying to be like the gt3...so its not a student. Yes the gt3 is a head master of the track. The gt3 is more track focused and precise. Its your track toy. The r8 truely comes to life in its spyder form where you have the great looks and orgasmic v10 sound and gorgeous cabin. Its your canyon toy. Both are the head masters at different things...they each have their own things that make them better than the other. they are both unique amazing experiences. A real car enthusiast would appreciate what both bring to the table rather than make fanboy comments like that.
Massive improvement to Autocar vids in the last year or so. Like these conversational pieces, gives a real balanced opinion. On my local roads too! Keep it up 👍🏻
GT3 sounds way better and faster (even the wrong slower stats you posted is faster) and better looking. There's no contest *except getting allocated to even buy a GT3* these days is ridiculous and stupid...So realistically for many of us out to buy a car at this range and don't have money to trade in multiple Porsches, we probably end up with the Audi...
The problem is that you can buy an Audi R8, but the GT3 you cannot because dealers are ruining the Porsche Brand buy selling GT cars only to friends and/or I speculate to whom gives them a kickback. All GT cars are selling “used”with a few miles with large premiums over sticker. It should not be that way. So I fell the comparison should be between cars you can actually buy. ...
Am I the only one who keeps on having difficulties watching videos with Mauro in it... The looks of a traveller with the little man syndrom with all its consequences.
Paul C That's the RS version, base GT3 is $140,000 and the fact that you compared a grand sport with a GT3 proves to everyone that you don't know anything about the GT3
Paul C It says $143,600 in big bold letters right on their website lmao. And I still can't tell if you're talking about the GT3 or GT3 RS, because if you're talking about the GT3 RS then only 2 other cars in history are faster than it around the Nurburgring, and one of them is another Porsche ;). Yet corvette's fastest car is still sitting down at 13th, what a shame. Not to mention you originally said "blow the doors off the GT3" yet neither of the cars you mentioned have a faster lap time.
"Will be faster" that's a pretty bold statement with nothing to back it up, until it happens I call bullshit. Chevy is not a brand that can just magically pull from 13th to 3rd.
I'm sure Porsche suspension engineers will be thrilled to hear your comparison of all their hard work and knowledge, to the closing of a kitchen cupboard!
The R8 is a glorious car and the GT3 is my favorite car in the world (well, the GT3 RS even more so). Who would be disappointed by either? But it's an emotional choice, not a rational one, they have slightly different appeals and the GT3's focus and the heritage of the 911 & Porsche wins it for me...all Porsche's have that special feel that only they do, it carries through the entire range, but this is the car where it shows the most.
Being a long time fan of Autocar magazine and it's feature videos. It's nice to see the dynamism back between hosts. It's been missing in recent years but worry over. The good features are back ;)
The suspension in the McLaren super series is better than the Porsche by a big margin. The fixed bucket seats in the GT3 are not very comfortable and you can't buy one new unless the dealer wants you to have one! The Audi R8 is a great car but the design is starting to look old. The 570S looks much more modern now.
Totally agree re the last 1000 RPM for the GT3 its not adding anything other stopping you bouncing of the Rev limiter. Peak power at 8250 and peak torque at 6000.
The R8 without quattro AWD feels like something is missing. Audi made its brand around quattro AWD and taking that away to make the R8 sharper while sound in practice, is like taking the very soul that made it an Audi. The 911 has been under the knife from Porsche for 70+ years and the GT3 is the 911 distilled to its very essence - it is not taking away its trademarks, but taking everything unnecessary away and making the Rear-engine NA flat 6 car everyone knows and loves and sharpening it just for the driving fun. Needless to say, I take the 911 GT3 anyday.
Nice one! But i feel that you need to upload in a higher video quality somehow. When there's lots of fine detail in a scene, like the trees at 1:58, the video bitrate is too low and the quality drops visibly.
I've got one of these GT3's and I agreed with everything Dan said apart from the damping. It's good but not great. I drive on Norfolk B roads and it does get a bit choppy. I had a McLaren 540 and that suspension is much better than this Porsche. Comparing these two, I've driven the R8 and it's a bit soft and easy, the 911 gives much more feel and emotion.
In Canada we get shafted on the RWS. it’s only available in black or white, not this beautiful blue. No quilted leather seats. I don’t think those mesh wheels are an option either.
You get more performance out the R8 with AWD not with RWD so not sure what he trying to say. Also I know exactly what my AWD car is going to do.Put your foot down out of the corner and the back end starts twitching out which is very easily controlled. So don’t know what he’s on about their too.
GT3 is over 50K more than the R8 RWS and the GT3 is super hard to get in the USA. Dealer mark up can be an additional 50k. I sat and drove one and well worth it if you got dough. Now the Audi R8 V10 Plus convertible is a different story.
Sure the v10 sounds nice, but I've been hearing that sound since 2005 with the Gallardo. Dress up a gt3/gt3rs with an exhaust and it sounds like an f1 car. The Porsche is so raw and intriguing, making it desirable to almost everyone. The gt3 is defiantly a weapon on both the road and track.
I remember when Porsche used to actually charge less for their stripped down performance cars. The 964 Carrera RS and RS America were several thousand less than the standard Carrera. The 968 Clubsport was also less than the standard 968. I think they started charging more for their stripped down cars with the 996 series 911.
In the end the 911 GT3 is a rear-engined sports car. When pushed hard enough the tail will ultimately kick out. It's just that over the years Porsche has managed to minimize that. But will never be able to eliminate it. Whereas the Audi R8 is a mid-engine car. Where the engine SHOULD be for "the best" handling (sure it takes more than engine placement...but is a HUGE factor). Which is why all professional race cars are mid-engine. :) I'd bet that if they put Michael Schmacher behind the wheel of both cars he'd get a better time in the Audi. And RWD cars are the most fun to drive. :) Taking you out of corners so well )not sure how they would compare to a mid-engine AWD car).
The GT3 is just next level. It looks way better than the ugly R8, you can buy it with a manual gearbox and if you get the Touring package its more practical as well. Porsche is the better car without a doubt. Definitely would my choice between these two.
BlackWind its only your opinion..i think r8 its look way better than porsche...and i will chose audi every day over that porsche..panamera its my favorite porsche
Lukas Luca I agree that the R8 looks better. It just looks more supercar-like, in my opinion. And even though I think the 911 GT3 RS' styling is an improvement over the other 911 variants, it still looks like a toad (just like all the others), in my opinion. But, hey, the different strokes for different folks!
Mauro, per your statement…”It doesn’t have the front drive shafts, it doesn’t have the propshafts and it doesn’t have the centre diff.”….and you forgot, it doesn’t have the front differential.
The Audi is a Great car. The GT3 is Gorgeous and the GT3RS is even better. But guys, the ultimate has to be the GT2RS, that car is Stunning in all aspects of construction and drive. As they say in the GT2 RS "Run Baby Run" catch me if you can
WIth Mauro Calo eating so much ice cream, his extra weight has got to be slowing the V10 in comparison to the Porsche. Stop eating ice cream and it may go faster ;)
If the last 1000rpm of the GT3 aren't doing much why is peak power over 8000rpm and why do the race cars with the same engine have an even higher redline? ...
J. Martinni he means the whole power curve is linear (to a point) but then you get to the top end the cams run out of optimal range so it's making more power but not the same feeling.
You know what? I miss that the roadtesters don't exchange the cars to get another view. Now both of them say that their cars are "absolutely fantastic" in every aspect.
Heart says R8
Brain says always 911
Pockets says ...bus
exactly
you're rich man
The RWS just screams for the gated manual transmission option from the first gen R8

Autocar unacceptable honestly. Just take the video down at this point. And make sure the editor you hire is a car guy. Fire this one immediately.
Very entertaining video! More like it.
Just remove it, fix it and upload it again. It is an unacceptable mistake
Have you ever made a review on a base trim 2017 or '18 911 Carrera without a single performance enhancement option on it except for a PDK trans
Amazing how not a single employee at Autocar notice that the specs of the GT3 are for the old one...

You probably never own either car....Just a 911 fanboy!
Slizz Dizzle your last point is a thought that runs through my head every time I watch one of these videos

Kristóf Máthé well if you are old and your back is hurting, then go for the R8.
"If I had longer legs I would be taller"
DWL!!!
Big Mistake, u have the stats of the old 991.1 GT3 3.8 liters at 1:30 . ;)
lui saluted on the dailyyy
Pretty dumb tbh.
luimarco haha lui don't play
propahhly saluted bro!
I only came here for the comments
GT3 all day! Even though I'm an audi owner! The PDK gearbox is unmatched. Full stop
I don’t think owning an A4 gives him any credibility when he says he chooses gt3 over r8 even though he owns an Audi
it goes against a perceived bias because he is from the Audi camp. so I get it.
Mauro and Dan r really good tbh... u can tell that both r proper Petrolheads and knows what they r talking abt...
I prefer the Porsche any day of the year - Ray Winston makes some very good points about the Audi though.
Ray Winston from the scum era 😁
At 1:30 , they showed the wrong information , its the 991.2 gt3 so, its 4000cc , 500hp, those stats are from 991.1 gt3
I think the stats that you said are from gt3 rs
Nah, RS is 520hp
991.1 gt3 rs is 500 hp, 991.2 gt3 rs is 520 hp, which is launched in this years geneva motorshow
You have done your homework. ;) Thanks
Thanks for finally filming in 4K.
I wouldn't even look at an R8 over a GT3!
W-James I would....and then give it to UGR to make it a living monster
For every day driving I would say the Audi R8. However for track use I have to go with the GT3 RS all the way.
CAPTAIN AMERICA - I would take a GT3 Touring. Looks to kill, easy to drive every day and it has a DELICIOUS 6 speed manual to play with.
Me Neither. And the Argument of every day use is Not useable with the 991 gt3s they are way more balanced and practical
Which is ironic because the R8 is much, much better looking.
ErwinSchrodinger64 why? porsche already have a gt2 rs with 700 hp, pointless of making an r8 very similar to the gt2rs

Eventus Vantos m8 I admire the R8 for being RWD, but with a manual gearbox, the GT3 is a league of its own!
Rejoice Rone So the R8 would be in a league of its own because of the V10 ?
It isn't. Remember that there is also a rear wheel driven Huracan with 580hp.
More importantly. What is Mauro wearing?
Seen Through Haggis chavtastic
I'm just glad it's not in any other colour .
Maybe he's just come back from attempting to re enter the earth's atmosphere .....
He works in a coal mine.
This. The oldest looking 12 year old I've ever seen.
What you would expect the most annoying man in the world to wear.
Good one guys, enjoyed it.
I'm sure you guys hear it a lot, but it deserves reminding. You guys have the best job!
Glad you can buy the R8 RWS as a full production model in 2020...
Well done Audi...

No Audi will ever match that GT3 when it comes to the experience
GT3 > any R8
And mate get that Casio adjusted, it's really easy on the 168 and it looks ridiculous when it's loose :E
GT3 have boring engine only Porsche fanboys would take such boring and ugly car.
TheEryk03 hahah they even said in the video the engine alone was more exciting and sharper. Boy it's hard to admit that you are wrong huh.
except the r8 v10 plus spyder.
nomnomguy680 only the fanboy that drove the GT3. You are brainwashed idiot that listing biased fanboys so fuck off.
I want that GT3 so bad!

Pound for pound Porsche GT3 and GT3 RS are the best sports cars in the world. Period!

Was this filmed in Gloucester? If not then where? Cheers lads !
Mauro’s best performance to date imo, good video boys!
I watch this channel now because of Dan. Keep him doing videos as much as possible!
Exactly the choice I have had to make over the last 2 months.... going to pu my RWS this week.... thanks for the video.

I love the current R8. What an awesome looking and sounding car.
Great video 👍🏻
Great review ....I still can’t make my mind up.

Shabec2982 no doubt..you will spend the money in hospital..
I like this new guy.
Bring back Mauro. He might not dress like someone out of Pebble Beach but his great driving and 'to the point' commentary is the best.
Excellent Video!
Why someone would wear a watch like that ? Also does he see anything clear that low in R8?
Great comparison - especially enjoyed the detail on the GT3’s damping Control. I would have picked it as well 😉
i need to see the circuit test!!
Very entertaining to someone who has Pcars but has never owned an Audi-Audi soundtrack is better than the GT3 good work guys

Random, but so good to see Autocar finally adopting 4K

I recognise those roads.. in fact that road is where I take my BM for a Sunday blast!! It’s Chillgrove, West Sussex?
Nice comparo and all but in the UK it's impossible to buy a new GT3 unless you're a serial car buyer at one dealer or pay way over.
You get more performance out the R8 with AWD not with RWD so not sure what he trying to say. Also I know exactly what my AWD car is going to do.Put your foot down out of the corner and the back end starts twitching out which is very easily controlled. So don’t know what he’s on about their too.

No drag race?
Awesome review, I love both... But I would still choose new NSX with better tires
I don't get it why are there no other cars on the road ever?

Why only 105lbs lighter? I was expecting something like 200-220lbs.
Ahm old GT3 as the new 991.2 is actual??????
I remember when Porsche used to actually charge less for their stripped down performance cars. The 964 Carrera RS and RS America were several thousand less than the standard Carrera. The 968 Clubsport was also less than the standard 968. I think they started charging more for their stripped down cars with the 996 series 911.
Gt3 will always be king of the ant hill , the r8 has the looks but the Gt3 has the talent.."Yeshua / Jesus is the way "
Awesome and timless video.
anyone know the music 0:00-0:50
In the end the 911 GT3 is a rear-engined sports car. When pushed hard enough the tail will ultimately kick out. It's just that over the years Porsche has managed to minimize that. But will never be able to eliminate it. Whereas the Audi R8 is a mid-engine car. Where the engine SHOULD be for "the best" handling (sure it takes more than engine placement...but is a HUGE factor). Which is why all professional race cars are mid-engine. :)
I'd bet that if they put Michael Schmacher behind the wheel of both cars he'd get a better time in the Audi.
Lukas Luca
I agree that the R8 looks better. It just looks more supercar-like, in my opinion. And even though I think the 911 GT3 RS' styling is an improvement over the other 911 variants, it still looks like a toad (just like all the others), in my opinion. But, hey, the different strokes for different folks!
BlackWind said the guy who has a Bugatti Chiron profile picture . You think that is good looking lmao .
NCH Music Nope, the Chiron is ugly, I hate it. Just put that picture for fun.
Mauro, per your statement…”It doesn’t have the front drive shafts, it doesn’t have the propshafts and it doesn’t have the centre diff.”….and you forgot, it doesn’t have the front differential.
I love Audi had loads of them and I am getting I Q7 next week. But I just could not drop over 100k on an Audi.
You can’t buy a GT3 ! Unless you want to pay £180k second hand
orton74 think it's safe yo say the gt3 will be worth double the value of the r8 in a year
yeah my point is you still have to find the 180 to start with .......thats Lambo or Ferrari money !
Lambo? you mean the r8... i mean huracan?
Look now...
Are they zips on his jean legs?
They are all incredible cars. It all comes down to how do you feel in it.
Nice review and comparison, especially on damp cool U.K. winter roads. GT3 please...
Porsche GT3, any day. The sound alone.
Why is Brock Lesnar reviewing cars?
How did they manage to make a video about 2 interesting cars so boring......? they deserve an oscar
Nice review, you need that balance between track and road and the R8 delivers !
I'd love to see a twin test between a Cayman S and the new Alpine A110
