All that work just to get ON the water. What killed me was after on the water you didn't fish...I use my kayak to flyfish every chance I get...Your dedication to your craft is commendable.
I love kayak fishing. I use a sit on top inflatable for steelhead but one of these kayaks for ocean fishing. My biggest fish are a 30 pound halibut and a 30 pound chinook.
Living in Little Roc k AR now; watching this reminds me how much I miss living 3 to 4 blocks away from Biscayne bay (Miami FL), carrying my 12' fiberglass canoe I use to own (this is 30 + years ago) to the bay and paddling out to one of the islands :-/ If I ever get around to building my own S.O.F. kayak (after finishing the "honey dos" there's a large stream not too far from my house that might do nicely.
@@jaydeer6367 there are east and west Greenland plans, f1 and long pointy boat plans, canoe plans and hopefully coming soon a river kayak with what looks like leanings toward a northern Alaska style. The kayak shown appears to be the f1 which is the sea kayak with good surfing characteristics. The plans change the dimensions to tailor the kayak to you. The weight is between 24 and 30 pounds. I am 240 # which was about the largest size and the finished boat with lines was just at 29 pounds. The length is between 13' - 3" and 14' - 3". The beam is 22 to 26", the waterline is narrower. This is the quickest boat I have ever paddled. The Greenland boats will be narrower. There is a stretched version (LPB) that is longer, if you are a sprinter not a normal tourer. The f1 works well for me on inland seas, lakes and mild rivers. It was designed for the ocean coastline, but those are a ways from here. Go on over to the cape falcon kayak site and poke around.
Not at all, skin on frame is ridiculously forgiving by boat building standards, build time ends up being about 50 hours. If you check out the student builds blog on our website we just had a 13-year-old girl complete one of these completely by herself.
I'm always scraping bottom on something I didn't see straight away or pulling it over beaver dams or running into unique situations when portaging from one lake to the next... Your canoe is real pretty, that's top notch craftsmanship. I'd be scared to put a hole in it when I'm days into the back country...
Check out the video that I uploaded called skin on frame durability. I go into a ton of detail about this but the cliff notes are. It’s not indestructible by any means but has an equivalent durability to any other type of boat the same weight. And you can always put on a heavier skin for more durability. I lost a tandem in a nasty surf landing about 10 years ago and it flushed around the corner and into a cliff lined rock Cove. The kayak rolled up and down the rocks in the surf for an entire tide cycle until we could get to it. There were no punctures in the skin and only one broken rib. Although everything made of metal on deck including my fishing reels and the rudder was obliterated. In that same video I show what happened to a skin last summer when myself and my girlfriend got high centered on a piece of submerged rebar in the canoe.
This kept going through my head watching this lol. Great work. "No, not too bad. About 18 hours. Which isn't bad, considering I carved it all by hand from one piece of wood."
cool, my grandpa was a kayak builder too, he used seal skins and old fashioned tools back in the 50s, it was their only way to get around before the folks showed up with outboards, "props" from Alaska 👍
Loved the music and this fast action film. Those must be really heavy though. When you have built 5 boats, you will have reached the threshhold of insanity. I know.
Thanks!! They’re actually a lot lighter than you think about the same weight as the lightest carbon fiber Kayaks you can get, but at the same time a lot more resistant to impact damage.
I wished you would of slowed it down when you got to the water. I couldn't watch it it messed with my eyes. But nice job, love watching you make your works of art.
I was so inspired I was considering making one like this. But now I’m too tired after watching this. And I don’t have the time. What did this take? Like 9 minutes.
I think you’d be surprised. It’s not bulletproof like a plastic kayak, But it will bounce off of things that would put a hole in a Carbon, Kevlar or fiberglass boat. A few years back we lost a tandem in the surf and it washed around the corner into a cliff lined cove, where full of water it washed up and down a rock slope through 2 tide cycles before I could get down to get it. One cracked rib and no skin punctures. So pretty good for something that weighs about 30 pounds. If you check out the channel here I’ve got a video on the skin on frame durability where I have a picture of my friends truck that he rolled over his boats. Couple broken deck beams but still no skin punctures. That one kind of blew my mind because the truck was totaled, sure it had something to do with how he rolled though. You can see the shape of the boat where it smashed in the windshield and the top of the cab.
It is so nice to see teamwork on building your Kayaks. Have you ever use Kevlar fiber or Carbon/Kevlar fiber glass to cover your Kayak? I Did see someone awesome color Blend of Fiber? What does it Take to Cover your Kayak? 5 to 7 Yards? Hope to see some more new builds . God Bless. Greg
The length of the cover just depends on the length of the kayak. Things like Kevlar and carbon fiber are more compatible with fiberglass style building systems. The material here is nylon although some people use polyester.
@@capefalconkayak Dear Sir could it be done to widen one of your Skin Kayak? Maybe 30”or 32” ? I am a little heavy and like to build one but 26” to 28” will not carry my weight? On the Kevlar/Carbon Fiber could I use one Layer? Do you want me to go to website? Greg of Ohio
