Syrian Guy here. Im thinking of making my first sof kayak. struggling to have the right materials shipped into my blacklisted country!. your clips are very helpful so far. so grateful
About 6:40 in you mentioned rib positioning in consideration of the sciatic nerve. Could you do / have you done a video about everything that might make feet / legs go to sleep? Thanks
I think so. I start with a wide spacing between ribs in the seating area, and then I back that up with a fabric seat that is suspended in that area, and then on top of that I have a foam pad. Some people actually have a unique routing to their sciatic nerve so a certain percentage of the population is gonna have problems in almost any kayak but I don’t think this is any more prone to that than anything else. You can also spread those ribs a little bit wider with a few reinforcements to get every last millimeter.
Hello! Very interesting video! Thank you! I don't speak and understand English, so I'd like to know what kind of string do you use to bind parts of the frame?
Hi zhmikk, it is called "Artificial Sinew". It is actually polyester thread with a wax covering that makes it waterproof. It is similar in strength to animal sinew used to bind traditioal kayaks. Google "Artificial Sinew" and you will see many sources. Note an important thing you might not have gotten if English is not your language, is that he says to get FLAT artificial sinew rather than the kind twisted into a round string. The flat sinew will not make bumps on the outside of the kayak under the skin which will become points where the skin will wear through. He discusses this at 6:40 to 7:10. Here is one place to get it, along with a discussion comparing it to real animal sinew. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR BUILD! wanderingbull.com/shop/craft-supplies/tools/imitation-sinew-multi-ply-natural-and-colored/
I’m admittedly terrified to attempt one of these but I am in awe of the f1 and all your work. Thank you for sharing. Just found out about the classes and will sign up in the morning :)
It's great job you are doing with all these videos and plans on how to make a skin-on-frame kayak and thanks to you I'm planing on making my own by using your plans. Thanks to you. The thing is that since I live in Finland it's pretty difficult/pricey for me to get my hands on all these "exotic" woods like red cedar and white oak so I was just wondering if I could make the ribs using local birch? Finnish birch is known to be quit high quality stuff, (thanks to slow growth) not that I know if it differents from American birch
Any reasonably light soft wood will work just fine. Norway spruce would be a great option. I for the bending stock I can make suggestions, but it just depends on what you have around. For example, even though it’s not the strongest option kiln dried European beach actually works really well for the ribs. Feel free to send me an email if you have any questions.
Greetings Friend! Can I put aluminum sheets instead of polyester with epoxy? And using the same wooden frame? My name is Alexandre and I live in the south of Brazil. I always follow your posts. I'm a big admirer of your work. I would love to exchange some ideas with you.
Is it possible for you to explain to me how to make the sail for me to put on the boat that I am making similar to yours? As I commented earlier, I follow you and I think your construction methods are well improved and simple to learn. My English is not the best, but I can understand your explanations. once again thank you very much and a happy new year. for you and two family.
For ribs stock I normally refer people to jwswanandsons.com most of my students by ribs from them. If I’m shipping a kit overseas though, I will make the ribs stock for that person and put it in the box.
It's just a super versatile user friendly kayak. Quick, stable, maneuverable, comfortable, room for camping gear. It's a design I've been steadily evolving for about 15 years. It has it's own video if you want to check it out!

Nice presentation, great lighting effects and clearity
Good vid...thanks....I met a guy who built a Fol boat....great kayak with sailing option.
Valuable information there. Thank you for putting it out.
Good stuff my man
When are you going to incorporate movable/hinge frame. One in front an one in back. It follows the waves.
Amazing

It’s really not that hard. I’ve taught people to do this for 20 years and I’ve never encountered someone who couldn’t get it done.
Nice video, friend!

Nice video
I like your videos , this kayak building technique is not known in Brazil .
Um espetáculo de shows de técnicas.
Just out of curiosity, could the entire frame be made out of pine?
Everything but the ribs
@@capefalconkayak Thank you

I don’t know anything about aluminum sheets, but it seems like it would make the kayak too heavy?
@@capefalconkayak thanks for your attention, but I forgot to mention that the aluminum foil is 2 millimeters thick

Note for anyone watching this video in 2022, the foot braces have changed and are now bolted in. I'm sure there's a video on that somewhere.
Do you sell rib stock?

Why is the F1 most popular?
