Nice conversion project. Practically taking development in one direction a windsurfer, or in the other an outrigger canoe, would both be more effective.
that is a great idea..... congratulations for you skills. you have inspired me to do the same adaptation on my hollow wooden sup. greetings from Santa Catarina . Brazil,.
Hello... Great job... Congratulations. But did you build the sail with the mast yourself or did you buy it already made? Do you have a video or purchase link for the sail? Thank you. Greetings. Philip
Thanks mate. The sail would have been too difficult to make myself and get the aerofoil shape perfect. I bought it from Star Kayak Sails. It’s their 3.3sqm sail.
Great & nice j job. question what material did you use for the sail, I am adapting sail to my fisherman float that I usually use fins to propel, so my plan is to have a sail like a windsurfing but smaller , I will sit and control the sail. what do you think, you see very knowledgeable thanks , Dan
Thanks Dan! The rudder is a 600m long kayak rudder, basically I scoured the web for the longest rudder I could find so it would give me plenty of rudder control. I use a modified telescoping boat hook as the tiller extension to the rudder arm. Thanks for watching mate!
Thanks Marcel. It would be difficult to install a sail like this in an inflatable paddle board as the mast a 200mm long hole to place it in the board. You’re better off making a new board if you want to use a similar sail.
@@marceljansen2153 a windsurfer style sail is definitely an opinion but I think you need to stand up and hold the wishbone boom. My sail is roller furled so it can be rolled up on the water as the wind increases or put away completely.
@@Aaron.deRuiter Vintage, have you gotten into the use of a boat pole yet? The pole is much more powerful than any paddle for river travel, and provides much greater control in descent through rapids. There's a whole skill set dealing with the boat pole. It was the primary mode of upriver propulsion in most places with rocky riverbeds. Check out the book "Beyond the Paddle" by Garrett Conover. It deals with poling, lining and tracking canoes (using lines to maneuver canoes through difficult water up and downstream), and navigating canoes over stretches of shelving ice. The last aspect is probably not too germane to paddleboards, as winter travel requires staying dry, but the other parts will expand your ideas of what might be done with a paddle board. I'm fascinated with the idea of paddleboards for wilderness trekking using dry bags for transporting one's gear. Your boat pole could do double duty as a mast. I got into canoe poling years ago. The bottom form of a good poling canoe is just about the same as a paddleboard bottom form except that the ideal poling boat is broader toward the stern. Also, you wouldn't want the little stern fin on a river boat, but your kick-up ridder makes that redundant anyway.

That looks like a lot of fun. Of course if you are going downhill you bring the sail in.

cool great job and skills but how didyou make the furling sail mast
Thanks! The sail I got from Star Kayak Sails, Bill Pain is the designer and has a great UA-cam channel explaining his sails.
Nice work, but i assume the next step will be a small sailboat like a LASER with a far better performance..
Absolutely fantastic. What kind of sail is the one you are installing (6:42)? Thank you-)

Fantastic work. I am currently trying to work out how to fit my kayak with a sail. Where did you get the one featured in the video?
Hi Lee, I ordered the sail from Star Kayak Sails. They’re a local Aussie company

Ok. Do you have a picture from your roll up sail lying on the Flor so that i can see the shape of it. What material is the Mast?
Sailing is way better than paddling.
