"The dark side isn't stronger, just easier."
Kind of illuminating to hear Yoda clarify the simple fact so many jedi had ignored. Philosophically applicable to this world too.

He also never says that it's weaker than the Light Side; he says to Ventress in the first episode of 2008 TCW "strong in the Dark Side you are, young one," *extinguishes her lightsabers remotely,* "but not that strong ([strong enough to defeat me]). Much more to learn have you." Ventress has much more to learn about the Force, *whichever Side she chooses,* before she can fight him.
Which Side is "better" ultimately depends on the situation; both the Jedi and Sith Codes have flaws that result in adherents becoming detached from their humanity and not being able to accomplish whatever their true goals are. It is the dogmatic teachings of both orders that have prevented things like the liberation of Tatooine.

I think yoda's species is meant to mirror the original sith species in regards to their primal connection to the force. The sith were so connected to the dark side of the force that they actively helped it grow and become stronger. In return they learned to control it to the point where it powered their technology and every aspect of who they were as a culture. I believe this is the case with Yoda's species because they seen what happened to the sith when they got too reckless.

Honestly, it would be fascinating to have the chance to officially learn more about Yoda's species, given how little we know about them. I remember in the clone wars animated series that when meeting the force ghost of Qui Gon Jinn and the [I presume] celestials, Yoda was instructed in preserving his consciousness after death. One of these trials was coming face to face with a dark side version of himself. Yoda initially fought his dark side before finally coming to the realisation that in order to be complete, to merge with the living force, he must accept all parts of himself.
To me this said that while Yoda may have seemed immune to the dark side it was only because of his extreme resistance due to centuries of Jedi dogma. Becoming one with the living force seems to require balance in all things. Even your own dark side.

Yep, time made him resistant. I think that anyone given enough human lifetimes would find themselves in the unique position of seeing what the destructive potential of the dark side begets long term. You quite literally know too much to ever succumb to the dark side, you can't deny logic and have to act in accordance with. This is why true evil (outside of relative perspective) can't exist forever, everything must be followed to its logical conclusion or else entropy reigns supreme and zero course of action can be followed effectively.

FWIW. Although Minch is officially a separate character than Yoda, the original intent of the writer for the Minch story was that Minch was a young Yoda. It was based on the idea that Yoda's wisdom, especially about the dangers of anger, was based on personal experience. It explored the idea that a young Yoda might have been quick to anger.
Minch's master, T'dai, was named after an all you can eat sushi buffet chain called Todai. Their ship, the Takara, was named after the toy company Takara Tomy. Minch was so named because Yoda's originally going to be Minch.
I am 100% sure of all this because I wrote that story for Star Wars Tales.

Is it possible that Yoda's species has a more primal connection to the Force than most any other species, and considering how innately destructive the Dark Side is, to fully give into it would overwhelm and destroy their bodies as well as their minds?

    • @chandlerh2511
      @chandlerh2511 2 роки тому +132

If this were true I think yoda would have been aware of it. Instead he shows Dooku that giving into the dark side would have made him far more powerful than Sidious. Im sure it would still have taken a toll on his mind and body, but he makes it seem as if he would have been able to easily control it. I like the assumption that since their species ages so slowly, they have a different outlook on life from most other species. Whereas a species that only lived a century might look to, even need the dark side to achieve a certain amount of power before their death, Yodas species has plenty of time to master the light to the point where they can even delve into the dark without succumbing to it. Fully converting to the dark side would be an objective mistake for any of their species, unless they were already near the end of their life, because they would just be limiting their potential. Wins the race, slow and steady does.

I think Revan was the only one who understood neither side has the answer. He understood that there needs to be light and dark and pursued the entirety of the force, he yearned to know everything, no matter what side it was aligned with, and this thirst for knowledge turned him into arguably the most powerful force user that has ever existed. It is possible to used the darkside without being controlled or succcumbing to it, just as it is possible to do good without adhering to the lightside. Revan literally chose the dark side in an effort to save the galaxy but never actually syccumbed to it, he did it out of nessecity, understanding that he had to fight fire with fire to stop the true sith from returning. He was a true strategic genius and astoudingly powerful with the force.

This is all Canon but I'm not linking look it up if you don't believe, but just the name of few that would obliterate him with 0 effort at all...
Darth nihilus, this dude was able to feel the force users on a planet and drain them of their life force heading to his own strength while annihilating everything on the planet hence the name.
Ol palps had the ability (while not in movies but it is canon) to send Force lightning storms thousands of light years away... He actually mentioned that he was gaining strength to the point that he would soon be able to annihilate entire planets with it... As it was he could kill most of everything just not EVERYTHING.
VADER lol go watch the video on how much Vader can lift with the force. Dude broke it down scientifically. BTW he bench pressed an ocean hundreds of meters down on a planet with three times normal Earth gravity. Retarded, the only word for it. (Also ripping the ship out of the sky as it was trying to take off last week was pretty sick but I'm pretty sure Revan could copy the ship thing.
And last the guy that put everybody to shame the single most powerful force user aside from the celestials (the father, the son,the daughter) of all time bar none.
      Talkin bout Darth fkn Vitiate.
Single-handedly mind slaved (not just a trick, full on puppet mode) 8000 Sith Lords simultaneously... Then proceeds to wipe out an entire planet draining the life force of every living thing on it gaining a quasi immortality and... He also forcibly removed the force itself from the planet....
"Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us, binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter." ----Yoda
He took it. All of it. Into himself and gained the ability to move his consciousness freely in and out of his body attaining spiritual immortality as well as the fact that his body itself live for thousands of years after. He even bestowed some of his own power on to others who then lived for nearly a thousand years themselves.
I didn't mean to rant I actually agree like I said with everything except for revan being the strongest.... He is actually my favorite Force user bar none. Only snips comes close to him in my heart
Edit.... Oh yeah and before anybody says that revan beat The outlander, and The outlander beat Vitiate.... At this point Vitiate was ancient and weak.... Also not dead because consciousness is immortal.... Meaning that hes still out there... could actually be in a movie or something AFTER the events of ROS even though the Old Republic was thousands of years before.... He could literally just take another body from someone.

Yoda's interaction with his own dark side reminds me of the old proverb attributed to various cultures about the two animals inside every person, one light and one dark -- the stronger one being the one the person feeds more. It makes sense that every Jedi would have a dark side because they're so powerful and power tends to corrupt even if the person originally intends to use that power for good (as people sometimes say, "the road to Hell is paved with good intentions"). One drawback to power is the potential for succumbing to pride since that has been described as the gateway to other forms of temptation. Also, there is every reason to believe that Jedi despite their extensive training sometimes do still fall prey to anger and fear. If the Jedi were somehow immune or invulnerable to this, then the discipline would not mean as much as it unquestionably does -- and furthermore, while it might be difficult if not impossible to turn Jedi to the way of the Sith, the Jedi would probably also have great difficulty experiencing compassion and empathy for other beings. Perhaps the real challenge for a Jedi is not really learning how to avoid or fight anger and fear but learning how to accept them without giving into them. Yoda's advice to Anakin was always about accepting the possible loss of Padme and Shmi but Anakin either couldn't or wouldn't -- and as a result, at least in Padme's case, he ended up facilitating the one thing he feared most.

The proverb says that every person has two of these animals inside them, one of which is noble (symbolizing our ethical side) and the other of which is savage (symbolizing our egotistical side). The parable often features a young boy who asks an elder which one of the two animals is stronger. The elder responds that the animal which the person feeds more -- meaning the side which a person more often chooses as the guiding factor in his or her actions -- will inevitably be the one which is stronger.

  • @cockroach389

I think that Yoda’s species was all force sensitive, and that during the early years of the Jedi order, the Sith used the Sith Temple weapon on Malachor to decimate Yoda’s home world, thus destroying most of his species to just a few of them left, because of his species being so powerful, so they didn’t want a lot of these roaming the galaxy. In doing this, his planet, being filled with many powerful force users of similar high level of force strength, thus turning his world into a Force Wound. Because of this, the Jedi order called on hundreds of Jedi for revenge, thus leading to The Battle of Malachor. Because of these events, Yoda’s species was left decimated and broken by the loss of their home world and since their numbers were dwindled to a handful, decided to erase all memory and evidence of their species and locking away their secrets.

There could have been dark side leaning members of Yoda's species in the Legends lore back on Tython. There the Great Pyramids, force imbued and space travel capable artifacts, had returned after collecting force sensitive people from around the galaxy.
There's more than a little suggestion that Yoda's species also answered the call when the Pyramid came. If so they would be living on a world with two moons, Ashla and Bogan, which were charged with either the light or dark side of the force.
The Jedaii (not Jedi) society there that grew from people collected by the Pyramids were force universalists who lived on a planet that would have natural disasters if too much of either side of the force influenced the world. So, anyone who leaned too heavily to one side was temporarily exiled to whichever moon was the opposite so they could focus for a time on that instead, and rebalance.
Of course in the Sith Wars after that, there could have been members of Yoda's species who hopped onto that side of the fence instead.

I think if what Dooku said of Yoda's dark side is true then he could've easily kicked Sidious' behind during their duel. But I think Yoda, especially after his experiences we've seen in S6 of TCW had grown even wiser than before. I think he realized that even if the Sith were taking over it was still something ephemeral. Like you said, he knew to wait patiently and I think at the moment he decided to crawl through that hole at the bottom of the Senate hall he became fully aware that was the will of the Force. Otherwise, I imagine he could've resumed the fight and dispose of the clone guards that had arrived with relative ease afterwards. But I think he felt the Force was telling him to let go and find another way, a way that required patience and learning from the mistakes and failures of the past. If there's one thing I agree with the disney abominations is when Yoda as a Force ghost tells Luke failure is the great master or something. Yoda accepted his failure after dueling Sidious and then sought refuge to learn from it. And just like Yaddle in captivity he waited for the right time.

So much of the Jedi creed seems tailor-made for them in particular, like the no attachments thing. It would be detrimental for them to form attachments to others who would live such a shorter time than they do, so they *must* learn to let go, and perhaps do not really understand the urgency affecting more "hasty" species like humans (to paraphrase another long-lived and wise species). Grogu's most difficult lesson is yet to come, when Din Djarrin reaches the end of his natural lifespan (which may be sooner rather than later considering the dangerous lives of Mandalorians). However, with Luke's new Jedi order waiting for him, and his own affinity towards the Light, he will prevail.

I have two thoughts on this.
#1: even though Yoda knew there was a threat to the order and had horrible visions about it, he didn't know the specifics of the threat, had no idea the clones were involved, and didn't know the real identity of Darth Sidious. There wasn't much he could have done to prevent Order 66.
#2: the Jedi Order had pretty much doomed itself by the time Yoda became aware of a potential threat to it. While I dispute the notion that he helped "ossify" its corruption (I actually think he worked to counter the arrogance of Jedi like Mace Windu), he certainly didn't make much of a dent in the increasingly spiritually lazy and political culture overtaking the Order. As a result, he didn't have many options. The Order destroyed itself in spite of his efforts.

@@generalkenobi5533 I get where you're coming from, I think both points are interwoven, along with other factors mixed in.
Yeah, obviously he didn't know about who palps was, and was operating with pure intentions. But he had a lot of strikes against him, mostly not his fault, but he did bear some blame.
First, the jedi didn't know they were still at war with the sith. So they got mission creep (admittedly it started even before bane got his attack of the clevers).
The orders original sin was getting closer than arms length to politics.
So Yoda came up in that environment, and it shaped some of his outlook.
Secondly, I think his long life had 2 paradoxical effects: he was set in his views especially post grandmaster/pre 66. But he had also resigned himself to increasing jedi involvement in politics that had already been happening....but crucially, in a purely subservient role.
If the jedi had maintained a...maybe not co-equal role, but at least more independence, or had been willing to buck political pressure the story would have been very different. Imagine an autonomous grandmaster, being pressured by a politician into a situation that already smells funny due to a "perfect storm" scenario, while they feel the darkside rising, AND are being asked to take charge of a morally wrong slave army?
And third, the whole orders conservatism came back to bite it with a anakin. He was pushed back on because of age, connections, anger, etc. Made perfect sense from the orthodox view. But qui gon saw his potential, and maybe could have made the most of it. But they tried to force him into the "standard youngling path" with a totally orthodox master. And in the process kinda pushed anakin out of the tent. I don't think mace was "progressive" per se but he was at least as arrogant as Yoda in a different way. But mace was more progressive in dealing w someone's darkness in a productive way. The problem was that anakin and him were too similar, and to add to it, anakin was accepted late in life and against maces advice. Sorry, end digression.
And even after 66, in a lot of ways Yoda didn't change. He either didn't want to train Luke out of fear of letting something else bad happen, or he still bought into the old training ways. If the council and Yoda had done more than barely tolerate free thinkers and non orthodox jedi, again, very different story. Like that master that callista was with in the clone commando books. If they were allowed to be more mainstream, the order could have been both more flexible and willing to call bs on shady stuff that the old farts might miss.

    • @johnnyissa7890

Yoda was not allowed to warn the Jedi about order 66. Why? Because the force needed to be balanced so the force itself turned to the darkside in order to bring balance. The force being anakin skywalker. Also the force wouldn’t have let yoda do it either way because we see the force wants it’s own plan to happen so it killed master quigon so he couldn’t train anakin because If he trained anakin the force would’ve never been balanced because anakin would’ve never fell to the dark in order to destroy the sith who caused the imbalance

4:55 Let's not forget that there are light versions of every darkside power. Including Force Lightning and Choke. And that Grogu using force choke is not inherently dark. All force is balanced, the intent behind the action determines light or dark.

Choke is just applied telekinesis. I'm not sure if Grogu actually used force choke or just used the force to lift and hold.... I don't remember. But choking someone with the force is definitely a dark side thing, due to the intent behind it. It's unnecessarily lethal.

To defeat an enemy, you must understand them. We all have light and dark inside of us. It’s what we choose to act on that matters. Understanding the darkness within, but not allowing it to take control, allows for more power in the light.
This can be taken many directions in each character or in your own life.
For Yoda, a basic example is his ability to absorb lightning attacks from the sith. For me personally, it’s using anger issues to give strength when fighting for others

Carious: is there a channel on each Star Wars species?
Assumption: Long ago, well before Yoda’s specie was discovered and before their strong connection to the light side. There may have very well been dark side users within Yoda’s species. Due to time and evolution. Those who had used the dark side were lost to history. Knowing how to turn them to the dark side is long forgotten along with those that were on the darkside.

I still say the Small number of Members of Yoda's race and their power says more about the level of force power needed for them to leave their home world, than it does about the overall power of the race as a whole. I figure that outside of these few, none of their race are strong enough with the Force to be called off of their home world.

Is it possible that the force is neutral overall? I mean it's one total element that includes both light side and dark side. The jedis that used the dark side "for good purposes" didn't turn to the dark side because it was not their intention, but at the moment they used the dark side, they simply were one with the force (all of it as it includes both light and dark) and the force guided them in that part because it was needed at that time. They never remained dark because it was never their intention to do so, they just used it as a tool. Maybe Anakin and whoever gives into the dark side and remains such is only because they intent to or because they do not know that they can go back and they are torn apart by their guilt or whatever that they used the dark side and do not know that they can go back. Maybe being truely one with the force means being in touch with its totality, meaning also the darkness that makes it whole. There are jedis from what I know, but I'm not lore pro, that used both light and dark and from what I know they were stronger, but they still did good as actions. What do you guys think ? Maybe the history of the universe is just at a point that they do not know that they can use both good and dark side of the force for the sake of love progress and good overall. Maybe it is possible to study the whole force without comitting to only one side. They are afraid of the dark side only because it is easy, the high road will ALWAYS be harder, and it will always be temptation, but as everything in life, choices have consequences, and maybe there are consequences of not being wholy integrated with all the force, dark and light. But maybe it's absolutely doable and actually the next step of evolution of jedis and sith and solving this polarity. They both think they do good in their own way as their perception of life and the force. Would love a sequel with this idea in mind, they could really do an amazing story out of it . But that be the end of the story since it would be the final point where balance is truely achieved.
