I assume that's why Fennec says "They're Hutts, if you want to kill them we'll need permission". You'd need other Hutts to basically cut them off and say they were fair game
That's directly modeled after Mafia traditions in which someone who was Made was to be considered untouchable, and you'd risk reprisal from that individual's family/syndicate/criminal organization if you offed them without clearing it with leadership.
Yeah. I mean bottom line is that if enough people agree that you are powerful, then you are powerful. Especially the right people. It doesn't actually need to be a whole lot more complicated than that.
I was thinking it's tongue in cheek: that is, they're so powerful you need their permission to do anything in their neck of the woods. Including murdering them.
They're basically made men. And they only allow full blooded Hutts. To become a member of a crew you've got to be one hundred per cent Hutt so they can trace all your relatives back to Nal Hutta.
Hutts were surprisingly strong and durable, so much so that one survived half his head being blown off and regenerated from it, and one was even the champion of a fighting pit in one comic. There my favorite star wars species.
Yeahhh, this was something I read about in a Legends book. The "machines they placed their bodies in" sound a lot like the Shell Hutts, and the metal shell was also intended to protect them from radiation. In addition to regenerative ability, their skin and flab was just too thick and dense to pierce with a blade, blaster shot, and I think even lightsabers would have trouble, but (I assume high-frequency) radiation could get through. Frustrating that in canon (Clone Wars) a hutt got killed by a single blaster shot......
Be flexible with your grammar. "There, my favorite Star Wars Species". Now it makes sense. If you can't spell, compensate with punctuation. Because as it currently stands, you failed at both opportunities. Now I eagerly await my lashing for whatever I inevitably fucked up on.
That's the problem with a lot of Star Wars species: we see one individual from a species and that one becomes the model. Wookiees are all tall, and aggressive and brown haired, just slight costume variations on Chewbacca. All the Hutts are big flabby slug monsters, rather than Jabba just being a grotesquely obese and ancient version of a more lithe, imposing creature in its prime. I want to see a strapping young Hutt in his prime, built like a giant slug version of Connor McGregor. I want to see a bespectacled Wookiee merchant who wears a fob watch and walks with a cane. I want to see a kindly, matronly Devaronian schoolteacher.
Yeah, that's a problem of expanding and building your world. It's also very obvious in Star Trek and other stories. Howdid a race like the klingons or predators even invent space ships in their respective civilizations? The original SW movies presented neat and creative visuals. That's one thing. To build an entire universe and mythos around something that basically was a "visual gag" back in the day is problematic. There is a great vido from RLM that deals with the mythos and origin story around darth Vader's suit...
Also at around 3:55 there is (fan?) artwork of a Hutt surveying a space fleet, where all the ships look very much like the styling of the Sand Barge, right down to the red sails. Does EVERY Hutt vehicle look like this? Why do they have sails, they're IN SPACE
@@plixplop the sails could be for solar power several shows used that i think it's just a decorative thing myself and wasn't dooku's ship in attack of the clones basically a pod with sails that extended from the front?
Yea, but Bats and Stark can actually do shit and are physically threatening. They're not fat slobs that sit on their ass all day. Jabba got took out by a frail skinny woman.
@@Aztecatl7 Well, yes and no. By Hutt comparison Jabba was an old man past his prime. A prime hutt boasts stupid level of regeneration (one got half his head blown off, survived and regenerated it back no problem) and are actually quite fast and strong. Easily enough to go toe to toe with other warrior species. In fact, we know of one Hutt who was a pit fighting champion, and Jabba himself was supposedly quite feared in his prime. Now he is just an old vet with a big beer belly who is way too old to fight.
It's interesting how the Hutts are treated in SWTOR. There's many hutts you can interact with, on Hutta, Nar Shaddaa, and across the galaxy, most are your typical obese crime lord, but there are a couple of exceptions. There is the hutt scientist Dr.Ogorrob, the tallest hutt in the game. And Toborro from the Makeb DLC, who is considered insane and power mad, but does make mention of the "old ways" of the hutts being one of warrior conquest, even building a special war droid to pilot in battle.
Loved Ogorrob, glad to see SWTOR getting some love here. Also love the fact that all Hutts can speak galactic basic but refuse to because screw everyone. Such a sigma move
I think the Hutts are simply very intelligent on average, more so than any other physical characteristic. They outsmarted their rivals rather than used brute force alone.
But they can outlive most of there rivals. That's wy the twins let boba fett in power on tattoine. Becouse the play the long game. They can afford to let there rivals fight it out.
My favorite part about the Hutt twins coming to confront Boba, was how Boba was having absolutely NONE of it and basically told them to get their no good keister off his property before he really did something
Yeah that's not very "realistic" a group of guys could just surround even a master Hutt Jedi who won't be able to deflect every shot due to their size.
A long life is never to be underestimated. Imagine political leaders who live for hundreds of years. They'd have the experience and time to impose far reaching reforms and advance very time consuming schemes. From an economic view, they'd have vast experience in dealing with various species and able to see trends in commerce begin to form simply from what they've witnessed over a millennia. Just look at that in contrast to a human life. Just as we're starting to understand life and gain wisdom our bodies begin to deteriorate. Our elderly years hinder decades of experience with poor memory and reduced ability to concentrate. Even life long political leaders fail to maintain control as old age sets in and their authority and power passes to someone else. Someone younger and less experienced. Our ability to self-govern is hindered by a perpetual lack of experience and not enough time to benefit from any wisdom we do gain. So yeah, the Hutt's owe their power and influence to their long lives combined with a society that vividly remembers a civil war that nearly destroyed them creating a twisted, yet harmonious culture.
@@TheVentrexian A long life can be powerful. Even if they can out of touch with current people doesn't make them easy to put down when they still have experience. When you’re so clear that you are only interested in negotiating deals at least people know what you’re about. They might not like you but they will do business with you.
And was an exception to the "Hutts are almost always bad" trend. Blotus was actually decent (the other harmless to decent Hutt of any significance is Dr. Oggurobb from SWTOR).
The Empire were allowed to post garrisons in Hutt space but Hutt space autonomy was guaranteed for one simple reason the Hutt's paid the bare minimum amount of tax required of them which was a considerable amount of funds for the Empire.

How are massive, intelligent, armored, asexual, incredibly long-lived creatures who readily exert their violent will without compuntion powerful in the StarWars galaxy? Your guess is as good as mine, I suppose 😁
They're actually hermaphroditic in nature in the sense that they can alter their sex. And it's actually considered a high taboo for a hutt to not alter from their birth sex at least once. So, not asexual.
@@jonbragg5175 Depends on the Hutt, what point of their life they're in and what place they're in. Many lower ranking or higher but active ranked hutts are quite intelligent. Essentially, they are surprisingly good warriors, which gave them a good kickstart on power, which gave them money, which gave them power, which gave them money, which...
Well I'm multiple different reasons one hut's may be fat but they can lose the weight pretty quickly and become very muscular. And very powerful in hand-to-hand combat when they want to be. Another thing they're very influential and very charismatic. They know how to talk to the right people to get things done when they don't have to. Their skin can handle flamethrowers and other such even blaster bolts is not guaranteed to kill a hut. Huts can regenerate from even having their entire face ripped off. And if you kill a Hut you lived a regret it the only reason why Leia got away with it. Was because she was too powerful in the new Republic setting it up. So killing her would be bad for business the huts can live for thousands of years too. And huts never forget or let go of a grudge so easily. And also huts can eat people that who get in their way whole. Hunts are very intelligent well not counting zero and jabba's father.
I think it would have more to do with muscle degregation when they get older. Like after 400 or 500 (Jabba himself is 600) they'll lose their muscle mass to fat, coupled by the fact they've grown so decadent and hedonistic, not many are active as they were in the ancient days of the Hutt empire
I literally had this rethought as they were being held up by the slaves, like what are the Twins gonna do if everyone just dropped them in the middle of the street?
I think there are several things you kind of skirted around in this. The Hutt’s long lives allowed them to play the long game, waiting until their adversary was at their weakest before striking. They could nurse a grudge for decades before striking, utterly devastating entire systems if need be, to teach the rest of the galaxy that they were not to be crossed. Another factor is their utter lack of empathy for anything that was not a Hutt. They would think nothing of the Gammorean guards (and Nikto, Klatoonians, etc) that died in their service on a regular basis, and even less of those who tried to stand in their way. Other sentient beings were seen much the same as Droids to them, and were given about the same level of care and thought for their personal well-being. This lack of empathy, coupled with their racism, greed, long lifespans, and physical abilities when sufficiently motivated are the source of their wealth and power.
Reminds me of a favorite quote of mine when a mastermind criminal gets injured and pulls out a medkit. "That was not part of the plan. Which is not to say that I did not plan for it."
Years later I still find myself rewatching the dog video at the end on occasion. I love that moment where the hand opens next to the dog's head, and the dog gets an "oh ya, it's about to go down look!"
"They had special machines they'd place their bodies in to make themselves more mobile and dangerous on the battlefield" ...so ancient Hutts were Daleks?
I feel like this is getting cause and effect reversed. The only Hutts we've gotten a good look at are crime bosses. They may well have gotten fat AFTER they became powerful.
Because at one point they were all super buff but usually a hutt would make a fairly unique and intelligent galactic senators tho it's almost a 50/50 split between really intelligent and incredibly dense since the original hutt leadership polluted their planet that they relocated to nal hutta.
If I were writing it , and going by some of the previous movies like RotJ where you see that Jedi powers won't work on Jabba, I would have them be somewhat immune to force powers and perhaps a bit psychic which is why they do so good in organized crime. It would take a Jedi or a Sith to just be able to trick a Hutt and then they need a bit of luck on their side.
i was wondering what the Hutt's back story was only last night and now your video magically appeared to answer my question! The force is strong in you :)
The Hutts have also built up such a power base they could probably bribe the fleet out from under anyone who decided to attack the species as a whole. They’re an empire in all but name.
I'm calling BS on that litter, 9 people couldn't carry two Hutts, thats like carrying two Rhino's or an Elephant. They should have had poles extending from the litter with the weight distributed among 2 or 3x as many bearers.
I call BS on your BS. Those conveyances had anti-grav and did not "require" any slaves to carry. Forcing the slaves to do the "work" is a punishment with adjustable assistance.
I played them in the D6 rpg as being extremely perceptive and knowledgeable with an extra dimension of constant thinking. They see the world both in our dimensions but also relationships and comparative strengths. Seeing/feeling the likelihood of betrayal and secret alliances as we humans notice casual correlations daily. This combined with the long lifespan and clanlike society was what was giving them the edge playing different parties out against each other.
The question isn't how the Hutts are powerful, it's why they give a crap about Tatooine. It's a barren desert with very few people. On a galactic scale, why is it worth controlling?
Valuable location in the galactic map, I think. Another reason may be in the ease of holding slaves there. Big desert with dangerous wandering tribes people, you basically die if you escape. I'm sure there's more or better reasons someone want to take over?
I remember somewhere in canon, it mentions Hutt's species skin is extremely durable and think, so much so they are resistant to blaster lasers. I remember reading Hutt lore, and with long life spans, genius intellect, damage resistant, and highly adaptable combat prowless... in addition to greedy natures they are basically like "dragons" from fantasy worlds minus the firebreathing.
I always assumed that their strenght was in their brains, an ability to be very good at keeping things in their heads and be very organised. As such they are pretty much built for leadership positions.
ECKHART. ITS BEEN SO LONG SINCE IVE WATCHED YOUR VIDEOS. Your videos never pop up on my feed anymore. So glad to see you're doing well. That intro music always give me nostalgic feelings. I just imagine the old short films you made playing in the background listening to you talk about the cool and interesting starwars lore. Love ya man. Keep it up
In Legends after the Rakata empire fell the hutts stole quite a bit of their tech for themselves and that was the springboard for their power in space.
So the Hutts used to be a warrior race but now they have essentially become the Star Wars version of the ferengi, being more focused towards business and money rather than war and now prefer to have other people fight their battles for them. plus the Hutts had 25,000 years to make the copious amounts of money that keeps them in their decadent form of power to this day. Essentially they traded in their swords, spears, and blasters in exchange for a different sort of weapon, Money
I assume that the Hutts are the most specific “homage” to (or ripoff of) Dune. The book “God Emperor of Dune”, (my favorite), has a worm that is similar in size to these Hutts. Lucas is known to have taken inspiration here, from the desert planet and worm ruler to the mention of “spice.” Also, of course, Klaatu and Niktu are famous sci fi references. (Much better references than Newt Gunray= Newt Gingrich + “Ray gun” Reagan).

I can't believe you didn't mention Jabba's line from ROTJ, "Your Jedi Mind Tricks don't work on me". This implies that the Hutt species may have telepathic or similar capabilities while also being immune to influence from the Jedi or control by the Sith. Having some kind of mental power like this can make up for their lack of physical prowess and enables them to wield significant political, criminal, organizational, or other influential powers beyond what is normal.
Have you done a video yet on the evolution of sub-FTL and FTL drives? Would be cool to see how all of those drives evolved and if they are still being developed.
Here's an interesting question: Se we know that some species are immune, or at least resistant, to Jedi mind tricks. Could that characteristic be replicated either through brain implants/cybernetics or some kind of genetic manipulation?
Also remeber Jabba was old as hell even for Hutts when he died, his regeneration was slowed and he obviously stopped fighting and jus Thad guards to do his work.
I was wondering if you could make a video on something such as what if the Rakatans didn’t come down with a plague that severed them from the force? Would they still be ruling the present day galaxy or would they have the inevitable happened and their empire collapsed at some other point in time?
I imagine the Kig-Yar and Tvoan from the Halo franchise are a lot like the huts, suffering debilitating physical disadvantages but come out on top through subterfuge and cajoling.
Lmao, has anyone asking this question ever looked at the rich and powerful here on Earth? It's not hard to imagine power structures that aren't based on physical strength, this isn't the stone age lmao
I have been wondering this for years! Like how do they go to war with other species? How fast are they really? Sure, I could see them being pretty strong once they get ahold of you but just keep your distance and you'd be fine! I always imagined Hutt fights looking like an elephant seal fight!
Look up a pic of kingpin from marvel. Thing is, Kingpin isnt fat, he's almost pure muscle. Same thing for the Hutts, they have muscles for days, plus they have the energy to use it, since they spend most of their day not using any energy. They can basically throw themselves with their muscular tails at a pretty quick speed. A common tactic for a Hutt to use against a species smaller than they, is to just shove the creature into its mouth. Their digestive system constructs and suffocates anything inside. Not to mention that the Hutts come from a dangerous planet where they are not the apex species, meaning in their early years they were a warrior species that could take on very formidable foes. I think Leia was even quoted as saying that Jabba could clear the length of the palace main room if he wanted to.
Hutts supposedly live for up to 1000 years and are very adaptive. In the old lor there was one that became a jedi which specialized in mind skills since Hutts have a powerful complex brain. Their empire was extremely powerful and rich.
In all my lifelong Star Wars fan imagination, the thought of a Hutt Jedi had never crossed my mind. I’m surprised though you didn’t mention that Hutts are capable of eating humanoids. At least in Legends
I read some source material that says Huttese is the most widely-spoken language in the Galaxy after Galactic Basic. A number of non-Hutt characters in The Book Of Boba Fett speak Huttese. It's like the Hutts are the British, who spread English, tea, and cricket to every place they colonized and plundered.
So the Hutts are are close-nit species that look out for each other, they are long lived (lifespan of +1000 years) and can adapt to changes in the galactic environment? I just feel it was a long video to say that. I expected more facts and more lore about the superiority of Hutts relating to the force and force users or "new content" in general.
Perhaps a better question might be: “Why did many species that are more nimble than hutts decide to work for them?” Would say-a human-really lose a 1v1 physical duel against a hutt that’s in shape for its species? I mean, outside of being able to pay someone to work for him/her, would a hutt really be able to maintain dominance over another species to make that species work for her/him?
Yes. Size and pure strength matter a lot more than being nimble a lot of the time. Its why all martial arts are done in weight classes. And at a certain point technology really takes over.
@@GodwynDi technology always takes over. Sticks and stones destroy the unarmed. Swords and armour destroy sticks. Guns destroy all melee combat and so on.
the Huts control vast reaches of trade systems and legions of mercenaries. They don't like to get involved in wars but COULD field a force comparative to the Empires. Not to mention that they have corrupted every major government in the Galaxy with informants, moles and minions within each. They also have extremely long lives and a strong well established institution that governs their Mafia like structure, meaning they have a patience and long view unmatched by most races and the wisdom to ensure their system never relied upon any one Hut or family, and only the eradication of every family could ensure they couldn't rebuild their control. Their third strength is, like the Mafia, they have solidarity within their families against outsiders, so the murder of a Hutt would earn the ire of every family and revenge would be assured.

Gamoreans don't make the strongest impression in RoTJ, and they were just saying how nice it is to see things that match legends characterizations in a live-action setting, so it seems to me they meant the exact opposite of how you took it.
I assumed it was because they were an endangered species so killing an endangered species would be illegal

Racism and stereotypes... now in space!

The Hutts are powerful for the same reason as Tony Stark and Batman, absolutely phat stacks of cash.

So basically, Jabba was Retired Batman from Beyond?

Yes, look up the Spacing Guild Navigators from the Dune universe, the one from the OG movie said he was over 3000 years old.

It managed to stick with me, and the Hutts have been my favorite species in Star Wars since
Not to mention a tried and true Hutt tactic when forced to fight was to charge their enemy head-on and SWALLOW THEM WHOLE

How are massive, intelligent, armored, asexual, incredibly long-lived creatures who readily exert their violent will without compuntion powerful in the StarWars galaxy? Your guess is as good as mine, I suppose 😁
I wouldn't call them THAT intelligent.
You have to be smart to survive and thrive even in a criminal underworld that is mostly controlled by your own species. Especially since incompetency was usually grounds enough to have you killed in some manner.
@@jonbragg5175
According to lore, Hutts are one of the most intelligent species in the star wars galaxy. Maybe they aren't a race of geniuses, but on average, they were smarter than most species on average.
@@jonbragg5175 I mean, they were intelligent enough to cooperate, persuade and otherwise cut a deal with the Human-centric Galactic empire that allowed them to expand their power and influence in a time when it should have crashed, while making serious money, bringing masses of bounty hunters and warrior species to aid them if needed and being the regional lords as long as they paid lip service to tow empire and didn’t hit too many of their convoys (or at least couldn’t be proved to have done so).
Essentially, they are surprisingly good warriors, which gave them a good kickstart on power, which gave them money, which gave them power, which gave them money, which...
…..made them lazy/comfortable
They have a powerfully foul smell!
Does that count?!
I never realised I needed a Rocky 4 style montage with a Hutt whipping themselves into shape, until now
I think it would have more to do with muscle degregation when they get older. Like after 400 or 500 (Jabba himself is 600) they'll lose their muscle mass to fat, coupled by the fact they've grown so decadent and hedonistic, not many are active as they were in the ancient days of the Hutt empire

That black wookie was there. Assuming the Hutts are paying him, they can just tell him to kill the slaves if they dropped them.
That was Black Krrsantan.
He'd butcher the slaves for a Klondike bar if asked.

In Legends after the Rakata empire fell the hutts stole quite a bit of their tech for themselves and that was the springboard for their power in space.
Ever the crafty bastards they are innit?! 🤣🤣🤣
And hard goods (like "spice")!
Unbelievable Lore for Star Wars so detailed.
I assume that the Hutts are the most specific “homage” to (or ripoff of) Dune. The book “God Emperor of Dune”, (my favorite), has a worm that is similar in size to these Hutts. Lucas is known to have taken inspiration here, from the desert planet and worm ruler to the mention of “spice.”
Also, of course, Klaatu and Niktu are famous sci fi references. (Much better references than Newt Gunray= Newt Gingrich + “Ray gun” Reagan).
Exactly, God Emperor of Dune came out two years before RotJ as well. Jabba takes alot of aesthetics from the Tyrant.

Nice breakdown! Myself have wondered about how the huttese gained so much respect and wealth
The title is fax
Absolutely
I said it as I saw the episode with my dad
The title is god-tier
Shout out to Beldorion, the fact this chad hasn't come back is the biggest sin of the new canon.
I really want to know where Jabba's son is.
They weren't always fat slugs. Before they became a major crime syndicate, they were powerful predators with impressive mobility.
Bro stop body shaming the hutts damn
Obesity is a hutt point of pride!
the Huts control vast reaches of trade systems and legions of mercenaries.
Anyone remember pizza the hut?!
Disgusting to look at!
Happy you are including the Act Man in tournament
Loving this new type of titles, Eck.
Very cool of you to host a halo tournament. Mad respect.
