    Ys V plodded lethargically so Ys: Ark of Napishtim and The Oath in Felghana could rip and tear with all the quickness.

    This was one of those games I actually liked a lot more than I was led to believe I would! Just plopping this TL;DR from my personal playnotes from a year ago, but for anyone interested in a contrasting opinion:
    ////////////////////////////////////
    Ys V- Kefin, Lost Kingdom of Sand - 7/10, 06/28/2023 - 06/30/2023
    Played guideless, using the Aeon Genesis 2013 translation...
    And it's another case of a game victimized by nobody actually playing it! Because despite everyone parroting the same wrong opinion about Ys V, this game's actually kind of fantastic!
    Completely unlike the non-Falcom SNES Ys titles, Ys V's got a real solid artstyle all its own, a *banging* OST, and some really soulful customization mechanics to boot. And while yeah, this non-'expert mode' is generally pretty easy - and yeah, there ain't no more classic Ys bump combat from here going forward - you can easily mitigate the issue by simply spacing equip upgrades out bi-townly. The ease isn't due to lack of enemy variety, and they're actually generally decently hard to dodge, so just keeping yourself a tad bit behind is all it takes to make for a real decent seven-hour experience.
    And it really is quite decent in every respect, from a really cool overworld treasure system - where generic but valuable craftables can be found by simply grinding into suspicious corners - to the superfluous but not unfun magic system they integrate with - where that findable loot can be crafted into a variety of goofy overly-animated spells, all with the 'what does this do?' aspect of Chrono Trigger dual techs - all the way to a multi-tiered environment design that frequently pits you against super fast enemies demanding quick jumping and blocking before counterattacking right back, thus making that constant sense of exploration and reward actually demand some level of player agency throughout. The dungeons are legitimately cool too - with lots of little semi-hidden passages and miniature combat challenges sprinkled in throughout - and while the spriting doesn't pop QUITE as much as something like Terranigma, it's still got a way more vibrant color pallete than you'd ever expect from a game title so desert-themed.
    I'll allow that you are still losing out on the TGX era's custscenes and voice acting - and there's a section or two where the game pretty blatantly just had a level cut, like when you're stranded with the bandit girl for all of five seconds - but this game's otherwise wholly on par with the better chunk of the SNES RPG library, and stands head and shoulders above its preceding 'Mask of the Sun'. It really does seem a shame it's been so cast aside even by the minority of hardcore Ys fans out there, and if I had my way I'd get far more to give this a try. I mean hell, even Aeon Genesis didn't seem to experience the thing in full; I found a hidden NPC halfway through what unlocks the ability to customize Adol's hair color pallete, but the entire interface was left entirely untranslated! Thing's soulful as heck and got done dirty by time.
    E; Though all that being said, I'm still downgrading it from an 8/10 to a 7/10... because the game's last 25% in Kefin itself is kinda rushed and sucky. Ah well; can't win them all.

      To be fair, that was a legitimate criticism. Hoenn really did have too much water leading to very unmemorable routes, slower gameplay and less creativity than say Route 113, the route full of volcanic ash or Mt Pyre, the giant graveyard tower with a garden at the very top. IGN just worded it in the dumbest way possible and was incredibly vague about it, leading to the infamous meme.

Darn no doubt : action turn based RPG Tales of Destiny or Tales of Phantasia on SNES... well on Super Famicom, only in ROM on SNES emulators cuz it was never ported here... but it's the best, just perfect! Seiken Sensentsu 3 as well like Teranigma is one that eluded the North American fans like us! So I pick Secret of Evermore as runner-up , cuz Secret of Mana is the underdog hated one noewadays... Illusion of Gaia had no levels and stats deep enough, no replaying places (limited like Vandal Hearts)

    • @the_exegete
      @the_exegete 13 днів тому

      There was an Ys V remake, though not made by Falcom. Arc System Works did PS2 remakes of Ys III, IV, and V. None of these came to the US and all are generally considered to be pretty bad, and of course none of considered "canon" by Falcom today.
      Most Ys stans expect there to be an Ys V remake some day, but since this is Falcom which is lucky to put out one new game a year we also expect it to be a loooooong wait. And the remake, if it happens, will be a complete overhaul in the same way that Oath in Felghana is hugely different from Ys III.
      Anyway Ys is great and I envy those who still have the series in front of them. Have fun!

  • @gameboylad

    Always so weird for me to look at the older Ys games. I came into the series later so looking at these is jarring.
    On another note, I didn't even know the fact that people clicking off a video towards the end messes with analytics. I tend to avoid looking at my analytics cause it might change how I do things subconsciously for better or worse. The most I'll ever see is the first page and the comment section in the channel dashboard. It probably is for the best for people to just talk towards the end rather than have a send off which is why I started to see patron shoutouts in the middle of a video rather than the end nowadays

  • @Moulinoski

    I actually liked Ys V on SFC. I feel like it’s still an above average action RPG on the Super Famicom. I’m not too bothered by the difficulty since I don’t really go for twitch-perfect reflex difficulty in games. Grinding out magic is tedious, however, and I only ever bothered with 3x fire which was a screen clearing attack. There’s one boss fight where you can use magic but there’s no indication of it. I would like to see a remake- the best engine would’ve been the Napishtim engine but alas, at this moment we’d likely see one based on Ys X’s engine.

    YSV is the worst kind of disappointing game. Where the idea was sound and you can clearly see the effort, but unfortunately they didn't put the effort for where it counted. It reminds me of games like Startropics 2 or Tales of Phantasia, and not in a good way.
    If enemies had modestly more complex patterns and the spells were instead, say, combat maneuvers like in Terranigma they could've had something despite the simple design. Alternatively, if the dungeon design was more clever, like in BrainLord or Lufia 2, they could've had something here too. Just either of them would've saved this game.

    Or a well made "LAgoon" ? A deeper "soulblazer" ?

    • @JasonGravesPoser
      @JasonGravesPoser  13 днів тому

      I like Brain Lord a lot more because of the dungeon design, and there's something about returning to one town the whole game which endears you to it. In this it's like everything happens so fast, you only spend 30-45 minutes in each area so none of them really have a chance to become memorable.

    YS V wasn’t as good as its predecessors simply because it neglected bussy being a part of its story.

      If you ever do want to give it another shot, I'd recommend trying either Ys Origin (which is a straight-forward action hack and slash) or Ys 8 (which is a more grand scale RPG) because IMHO, those are by far the best entries in the series. Ys reinvented itself three or four times, and I don't like all versions of it either.

      I prefer the party-based ones, with IX being by far my favorite. (I actually liked VII and Celceta more than VIII, which has one of the worst maps I've ever endured in a game.)

      If you ever have time. Totally worth playing 8 or 9.
