I find that both relatable and strange, because as a beginner, one of the first things I learned was to yarn over and always bring the hook towards you when attaching it to the yarn. But also, I've accidentally also done it the other way.
Lol been doing yarn under when going through stitches and yarn over when pulling through loops and didn't realize there was a difference. I'm going to try going strictly one type or another to see how it feels/looks
Definitely yarn over! I just can't be having to think about changing how I grab the yarn with every stitch. I would have to frog my project constantly.
Maybe it’s just because I haven’t been doing crochet long when I heard about this stitch a couple weeks back, but I can do both stitches really easily without thinking too much about it, it’s like a simple switch In my brain of muscle memory and after the first few stitches I don’t have to think about it, yarn under gives a lot more shape to detailed patterns but yarn over I think is better sometimes because I used it to crochet a snake face and the transitions between increases and decreases came out way too harsh in that one so I used yarn over for the face to make it look softer
i've accidentally learned to do yarn under when i just started crocheting, and now i can't relearn no matter how hard i try 😅 i love how neat those stitches look on toys!
@@EliseRoseCrochetyes they look awesome just wanted to say when all I knew how to do was chains I yearned under them when my fines were teaching me to crochet thy forced me to do yarn over until I got a hold of it 😂😂
Not that I think you’re an expert but recently I made the switch and I noticed that sometimes using this stitch makes animals with soft faces look too harsh Do you think this would be an issue with my stitch consistency? Or is there a time and place for each stitch? I’m new
Same, I just started learning recently, and yarn under feels weird and uncomfortable to me. As someone who often gets tangled even in simple stitches, I think I will stick to YO for now :D
I find the terms yarn under and yarn over so difficult to conceptualize for some reason. It’s helpful for me to think about it as clockwise or anti/ counter clockwise. I don’t know why!
I know I always thought about the hook so the the word "under" makes me think of yarn over but I just made a trick where I usually just tell myself it’s the opposite of what I’m visualizing and I hold the yarn so that the hook is very clearly going over or under it so it’s easier to visualize and I don’t get confused
When I first started crocheting I learned to yarn over, so that's what I've stuck with this whole time. I didn't realize yarn under resulted in smaller stitches! I think I'll have to try that with my next amigurumi so my yarn skeins can stretch a _little_ further 😁
Now knowing both stitches it makes crochet so fun! There’s more variety and because of muscle memory after I decide to make the switch it only takes me a few stitches and then I don’t even think about it
I am on team “do what works best for you”. As someone who wants crafting to be as inclusive and inviting to everyone, I feel that as long as how your doing your craft is best for you and it gets you the results you want then I’m on that team. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
As i pretty much taught myself to crochet from pictures, I was using the yarn under method without even knowing. But then, when I started watching more youtube tutorials (after crocheting for a few years), I naturally switched to yarn over and now I'm having a harder time switching back.
I started learning crochet doing yarn over but as I gradually learned what works best for me (where my wrists feel comfortable) I’m now doing yarn under
I use yarn over and today all the videos I watched was with yarn under and Iwas starting to doubt myself already but luckily your video shows up just in time 😂
As a kid I wondered why my mum's work looked different compared to mine, years later I've figured out there are two ways. I love how you always stumble across something new in crochet. It's a never ending journey! Btw, I often like to use yarn under for amigurumis.
Interesting. I learned something new from you today; thank you. I yarn over, and never gave it a single thought to yarn under. I'll try it. Have a good day!
I use yarn over for everything except amigurumi, and yarn under for amigurumi. I used UA-cam videos to relearn how to crochet about 1-1/2 years ago, and also to learn amigurumi about a year ago. I believe it was you ❤ that I learned the difference between over and under back when I first started with amigurumi, and since I was relearning crochet at almost the same time I was able to adjust my stitches based on what I’m crocheting. You are the best person to go to for anything amigurumi!!
I yarn under, but not because of using less yarn; it's just how I learned. In fact, I didn't even know that it used less yarn! I guess you learn something new every day!❤
Holy crap... I KNEW you could do the alternate yard under but I have never even thought to try it but I definitely am going to now!! That looks AMAZING for little stuffed animals! Thanks!! ❤ Will be trying very soon!!
I'm leaning towards yarn over lately since I like it when my amigurumis are really squishy, but I still use yarn under from time to time if I want a project to hold it's shape more
I've been yarn under ever since watching your video about it! Game changer for the aesthetic for me, but hands definitely need a break more frequently 😅
I have just started doing crochet and had been making a couple tiny amigurumi. I've never noticed yarn over or under makes any difference cause I often use both in one project lol 🤣 tysm for these, I most definitely pay a closer attention when crocheting 🧶❤
I visited my neighbour to learn crochet from her. I loved it and started creating the chains. It's basic and I will visit her again after 2 days, after I get accustomed to today's pattern by practising.
I was a yarn over gal but since becoming a yarn under gal it’s been a game changer and I can’t do it differently now and sometimes I get mixed up switching between blankets and garment stitches and amigurumi stitches.
I’m so glad that I watched this video all the way through because this whole time I’ve been thinking that yarn under required putting the hook over the yarn both times, not just while the hook is through the two loops at the beginning.
I was a yarn over crocheter and didn't think it would matter. But decided to try yarn under and see how different it looked. I am converted and prefer the yarn under as I think my world looks neater. ButI have seen beautiful work both ways by others.
Oh so cool someone talks about this! I change depending on what i make, if its a sleeping animal for example i would make Vs because it is slightly...calmer? The Xs i use for "moving" postures :D
I do both, I learned yarn over first and still use it for some of my plushies. I use yarn under for my cat and dog toys because they make tighter stronger stitches which helps hold up longer to sharp teeth and claws. 🐾
I crochet about 8 years now and I am mind blown about the fact that there are two different ways to do a single crochet. I always did the yarn under method. But I might try yarn over for my next project 🥰 thanks for your videos🥰

i only learned yarn under when i started (thank you tiny amigurumi kit) so i never learned how to yarn over lol it makes my stitches on garments super neat at least
I really never noticed which one I use. Now, I'm going to pay attention to how I crochet ! 😅
It's interesting to figure out your own preference! 🧶🧶🧶
I was thinking the same thing 😄 I've never really paid any attention to which way I do it, now it's all I'll be able to focus on when I crochet next 😂

I used to be like that but then I just got used to it after doing it for a few minutes and now I actually have to think before yarning over 😭
ive been using both all at once, like not keeping track and switching between the two during one project 😭 i didnt even realize there was a difference
Yep there is a difference! ❤️

Same, I just started learning recently, and yarn under feels weird and uncomfortable to me. As someone who often gets tangled even in simple stitches, I think I will stick to YO for now :D
Yarn under was how I was taught. Never knew there was a difference. Thanks, for the info. 😊
I’ve been a yarn under all this time and didn’t know it til last year. Love that it uses less yarn. 🧶
It does make pretty little stitches too! 🧶🧶🧶
I ALWAYS yarn under. It just feels so much neater and more satisfying as it builds up. Plus looks nice and tight, perfect for amigurumi.

It really is amazing!!! Welcome aboard! 🧶🧶🧶
I"m a long time crochter n i watch alot of video"s to me it"s crazy how many different ways people hold the hook n yarn
this is barely the tip of the iceberg
Yarn under!!! It was weird to start at first but now it's weird to yarn over!
Under for sure! I really cannot stand when stuffing shows and the under I think helps with that.
Thanks it sharing! 🧶🧶🧶
Yarn under! It makes my stitches tighter, so I can use a larger hook!
