  • Welcome to Grapevine Cinema! I hope you enjoy my reaction to 'Barbarian'. This one had so many twists and turns and I think this might be my 2nd favorite horror movie all time. I had my sister watch it too and she's a fan...but like, she had faith in Keith being a good guy. Couldn't be me. Poor Keith.

      Exactly his casting just allowed the audience to easily assume he was going to be the bad guy. It was v clever casting.

    The real genius of the movie, is tricking the audience into NOT trusting Keith (who in the end is a good guy), and somehow trusting that AJ (a real piece of sht) would help save Tess in the end. We were wrong both times.
    Really tells you about our preconceived notions as an audience, and as people.

    I think that she takes care of both men and women but the ones that heavily resist die "You do not want to freak out around her trust me" -Tess. So with that in mind, my thinking is this:
    Keith's death - He was killed for freaking out. You hear him screaming for help a bunch at the start and running away.
    Andre's (the homeless guy's) death - He was trying to help them escape, whether or not she knew that, he was found with her babies so she probably interpreted that as him steal them.
    AJ's death - He was scared and resisting but not really "freaking out" around her the same way Keith was. She killed him for trying to kill Tess, plus she had not bonded with him the way she had with Tess.
    Tess living: She played into it, even though she tried to run away and was freaking out in that moment, she had already been bonding with her for weeks.

    what I love about this is the structure of this movie, from the start we see Tess's perspective, everything is scary around her, she needs to be careful about the decision she makes, like she said to Keith," men usually go into life without worring about being physically hurt", they just do stuff, like we see AJ do when he finds the room and the cave, from AJ's POV everything is not scary anymore, the whole thing is about how women go into life having to be SuperExtra careful in everything.....

    A couple cool things I noticed was the house was on Barbary street... or something like that. So, anyone living there would be a Barbarian. Also, when it went back into the 80s or whatever time frame that was, the aspect ratio switched 4:3. Overall great movie. I held off watching it for a while because the trailer made me think it was your typical girl has to stay with a creepy guy in house story where she wakes up and finds him watching her and then he spikes her drink and she wakes up chained to a wall or something and so on. And, it was going in that direction for the first third. Thought it was brilliant how it pulled a 180 and went a totally different direction. I was wondering if there was more of these "monsters" down there. The homeless guy said she aint the worse thing down there. He could have meant Frank, but he seemed sort of powerless and didn't seem like much to be afraid of. I imagine those tunnels are connected to all the run down houses on that street too.

    The bucket is to imply that people get imprisoned in that room for long periods of time.
    Keith and Tess both booked the AirBnB separately because it was listed on multiple platforms by the agency Ajay hired and they didn't care to pay attention - just bad luck.

    The movie offers a really incredible undercurrent of not only the worst things that women could possibly go through in life (including the ways two different predators assault women) but also the little things. Like how Keith, even though he's a good guy and well meaning, kind of talks down to Tess when she's afraid and says verbatim "but I didn't see it" about what she went through. That moment felt so subtly reminiscent of the ways that people will downplay women's experiences of things like sexism because they don't personally "see" it happen. And that's just one little example of things like this in the movie. Agh. It's so good.

      I'm going to have to strongly disagree with that last bit. If a man were freaking out about a room with a bucket, a bed, and a camera I think his response would've been exactly the same. It's just something you have to see for yourself to understand why it's alarming and had nothing to do with the fact it was a woman telling him that. She also did a terrible job of describing it which didn't help either. He shouldn't have blocked her path though. If he had more to say he could've walked with her then asked her if she'd be willing to wait for him while he goes and looks.

    • @alexnicole89
      @alexnicole89 Рік тому +6

      @@quailman I understand what you’re saying but within the context of the rest of the movie’s subtle and not so subtle feminist themes, this interpretation definitely isn’t off the table.

    • @alexnicole89
      @alexnicole89 Рік тому +4

      I’m not trying to speak for all of the female gender but if I was in Keith’s position, even barely knowing Tess, I would have absolutely been out of that house immediately with her 100% based on what she said. I wouldn’t need to look to believe her.

    • @quailman
      @quailman Рік тому +6

      @@alexnicole89 Makes sense. Speaking for myself and only myself (albeit as a man) I would've responded very similarly to how he did regardless of whether it was a man or a woman freaking out. So I don't think he was talking down to her or even discounting her experience - he just wanted to go see it for himself to understand.
      Now that I think about it they kind of touch on this point themselves on the couch when she mentions how if she had arrived first he would've just walked in without a concern in the world. Hell, even after seeing the room he apparently wasn't very concerned since he took it upon himself to go further in.
      Maybe I'm just missing what the issue is here. I don't understand how not responding the way she wanted him to (e.g. running out of the house with her) is at all sexist. Or if not sexist, since you didn't directly say that, is him talking down to her or discounting her experience.
      Either way it's an interesting discussion - which is a testament to how good this movie is.

    We had very similar journeys with this film. I also fully thought Keith must be the bad guy (and I didn't even know that was Bill!), and then on rewatch there are a lot of subtle clues that he's not, most notably for me, as you said, his genuine confusion and just how long he pauses and gives her every chance to leave. It would have been truly suspicious if he had insisted she come inside immediately.

    Let me say first that I loved your reaction. I felt sorry for the mother creature I mean she just wanted a baby of her own and she did not ask to be created and especially in such a perverse manner. I think it’s very ironic that AJ is more of a “monster” towards Tess than the mother creature. I really couldn’t tell if Aj actually did what he was accused of until his confession towards the end at the fire. Especially with the little things he was saying and the way he was wording stuff. The way his dialogue was worded made it so that everything he said could be interpreted in different ways. The writers did an amazing job blurring the lines and giving us hints in both directions to whether or not he was a good guy or a bad guy. This movie was awesome!

    When you go to your air b&b, one way to check for hidden cameras is to make the place as dark as possible, open your phones front facing camera, and slowly aim the front camera toward where a hidden camera might be. If it’s an infrared camera, your front camera will trigger the IR light and you will see it either light up or blink red just like when you push buttons on a remote control.

    About the theory of her only saving women, but also tried to mother AJ, I think that she probably had sympathy for AJ because she probably mothered babies herself and maybe had male babies for a period of time that she got to get attached to so she has sympathy for some men.

    Saw this one in theaters and loved it. Great horror and suspense, with good social commentary and some genuine laughs. I think Frank killed himself because he was infirm and AJ threatened to get the cops, so Frank just kind of said "I'm done". As for why he didn't kill AJ, I don't know. Maybe he wanted it all to be found after his death?

    All the men in the movie are different masks/characters/shades of men that women have to deal with on a daily basis.
    It’s just kind of a scarier world as the weaker sex (no offense).
    Even when guys are nice (Bill Skarsgard), you still have to be suspicious and on your guard.
    Justin Long seems so lovable and he turns out to be a scumbag.
    The scary bum that she runs away from is actually nice and decent.
    The old guy who keeps a tidy yard and house who seems like a good neighbor has filthy disgusting rape-dungeon in his basement.
    Women really have to be discerning and downright judgmental at times.
    There are some fantastic camera movements in this movie that are so subtle you miss them.
    The opening shot coming up out of the ground and the shot where the camera follows the old guy into his car.
    Aaaand the score/soundtrack is sooooo good and unsettling.

    This movie to me is a perfect example of using social commentary in a movie. Way to often movies want to have a deep political or social message and it ends up being a loosely put together story of characters just spouting whatever ideology the movie wants to preach. This movie has so many layers and while you can watch it as just a movie on its own I think it does hold a lot of social significance especially since it’s still such a good movie overall.

    I feel for Keith he was a good guy who was obviously attracted to Tess. They clicked, had chemistry, similar interests and goals. He wanted to explore that and he was doing his best to put her at ease and be polite. In the situation he was in he came off as suspicious to her and especially to the audience with the editing and musical ques.
    A big theme for me was who can women trust and who should they be suspicious of. She's unsure of Keith and afraid of the homeless man running to warn her. (justified) The two men in the film who are looking out for her.
    She trusts AJ (the rapist) immediately because they are in the same survivor situation and goes back to save him.
    Even Frank, the woman in the store is super helpful to the growling creepy dude when she sees him getting baby supplies. The woman he abducts trusts him because of the uniform.
