So strange to hear a father, that is clearly very skilled, say" I've been learning from my son how to make knives" Keep the up the excellent content guys! We all look forward to the build progress and the new projects
Guessing the dad is some kind of experienced engineer or machinist who got his kid interested in fine machining in the first place. Then again. maybe not.
I love the slight taper on the handle for the fingers to wrap and grip; those details are what really make a knife special. I love all Royer tutorials, but yours are extra peaceful, Dad Royer.
This video as well as all of your guys' videos, shows the importance of relentless attention to every single detail when making truely masterpiece level cutlery
Each component of this knife is fine on its own, but they all come together to make a superb looking knife. The patina on the copper alloy is interesting. Nice build!
Hey thanks. I’m finishing my spine at around.150”-.180” on a 1.7”-2.25”. And my convex is about.38” up from the blade. That leaves plenty of material in the center of the S grind. Be sure to check the center if you’re not sure. I’ve had at the thinnest.040 in the center. That’s at the edge of my current comfort zone. Keep Forging On my friend. Dad
I'm a big fan of your shotgun knife! when i previewed the video in my feed, i didnt realize it was a royer build at first, but the geometry of the blade really caught my eye. i love how you shaped everything, and the handle especially looks really comfortable
Great work. Your chef knife is very well thought out. I cannot tell you how many cheap chef knives I’ve used where there is no place for your index finger and the back edge of the knife is sharp!!
I get so happy everytime i see that you've uploaded a video!!!. I will definitely be getting something made from you guys asap!!! You guys are true artists
Jess jeff you make great knifes. I loved the colour scene on this one. I am anxiously waiting for kyles attempt at damascening. I BET MY LEFT BUTTCHEEK that hes probably practicing this a lot
I wholeheartedly recommend some form of breathing protection when grinding steel like that. A half mask with the highest grade for dust protection should go from around 50-100 dollars. There are also more expensive full masks. I know Alec Steele uses a full mask with like, its own air system where it sends fresh air into his mask. Breathing in all that metal dust can cause severe problems over time that will affect your ability to work and may result in a trip to the hospital that puts you in medical debt. Stay safe everyone!
Hey Mr. Royer, if this is one of your journey man test knives you've got it in the bag. Looking forward to seeing a special video after you pass the test. 🤞
Hey thanks Richard. Kyle is my master teacher. I’m an apprentice. Testing at BLADE Atlanta this year for my journeyman smith certification in the American Bladesmith Society. Keep Forging On my friend Dad
Have you ever finished a handle with a true shellac finish? The wood you use is so beautiful the shellac flakes would really give it a premium look to it. It is not as hard wearing as other finishes but it can be covered with linseed oil which itself would further set off the shellac. Just a thought. Awesome work as usual. Rock on.
Same here dad… I absolutely hate a loose handle fit… I tend not to bed in epoxy like Kyle does but prefer the hole itself to be snug all the way through…. I just made like 4 broaches of a different sizes and go slowly
Good question senshi. I take all of my grits up to the sharpie mark. Then on my final grit I gently start a soft blending while checking each side. A second set of lines helps to not to over grind. Hope this helps. I’m more accessible on IG at Royercutlery. You can reach out there also. Keep Forging On my friend. Dad
so being kinda new to knifemaking, ive been absorbing information and asking questions on all kinds of things. it seems that the general consensus (from many different sources) on 5160 is that its not the greatest steel for knives, so im just curious as to why 5160 was the steel of choice for this build, compared to something like 1084/15N20/1095/damascus etc., and if im mistaken on 5160 being a not so good knife steel. ive used it for knives when i started and they didnt hold as good an edge as the 80CrV2 steel i use now. also i make hunting/bushcraft knives, and if anyone has info on what steel they recommend for that id appreciate the help.
Great question Ian. 5160 is a tried and true faithful steel. It’s one of the most diversified alloy steels easily available. Properly heat treated and a proper geometry on the blade for it’s intended use it’s a great choice. Our steel is certified. Bone yard steel may have proprietary mystery alloys that may not make a proper knife. There are a large range of heat treat recipes for 5160. And apex geometry. Definitely go with what you can get and what works for you. You are in a good place if you are finding you have preferences. Keep Forging On my friend. Dad
A plunge?? Mmmmm nice… giving more meat in the ricasso.. thinner grind and still super sturdy but I’ve not considered a plunge line until I saw this…. Interesting (stealing that, sorry). Beautiful knife dad…. I think you and Kyle should do a knife off challenge… both make the same design and let’s see
Ok so like all the families work it is absolutely beautiful My only thing is …..🤔 Why the fighter style handle , Me being a big nobody sure ain’t no pro kitchen blade maker but I’m asking for a friend 😊😅
Hey thanks James. Let your friend know that this handle is very universal because of its ergonomics and with kitchen cutlery it’s a great profile for choking up a pinching the blade for quick delicate chopping.
