  • I'm on my 4th season of daily driving this 1975 Jaguar XJ6. It's time to fix another small leak and continue to enjoy this classic car. The realities of daily driving a classic car are leaks, rust and break downs.

I couldn't agree more. I love my 72 XJ6 S1 and I daily mine putting 50 miles on per work day. Another 250 per month with the Iowa British Car Club and a few thousand more on my annual vacation. All adds up to lots of smiles per mile. If you do the maintenance and repairs yourself, like you say, it's a very affordable car. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed the return of the Rockabilly music intro . I have always chose comfort and style over gas milage . I have owned many classics over the years from muscle cars to 15 Thunderbirds going back to 1957 and newer . Owned Cadillacs and in fact purchased a new 1978 at the same dealership in Memphis TN, that Elvis purchased his fleet of Cadillacs . I flew from Little Rock , AR. to the Memphis airport where the dealership had my car ready at the airport for me to drive 132 miles back to Little Rock, AR. Now I have the 1990 Jaguar XJS V12 coupe that I am restoring plus my daily driver is a SUV until I finish the Jaguar .

How was that quote ? Imperfectly perfect ?
Also "Daily" driving an Opel Omega B. Daily means every family trip outside of the city. 2023 meant 21000 km with no breakdowns.

Old luxury cars generally represent great value, provided they have been maintained. Just don't insist on all the toys still working. The mechanical bits are what matters.

The clamps on my XJ6 S3 have cut into the hoses on the fuel rail. Tightened them just made it worse. The car is now undrivable. I bought the replacement kit from Mr Injector last week and I'm removing the fuel rail next weekend and doing the job properly. (Using Adam's previous video on how it should be done). Wish me luck.

Totally agree, my classic XJ6 has been quite economical to drive compared to the cost of buying a new car that depreciates.

Kevlar hoses with Jubilee stainless steel wide band hi torque clips is the way to go

I think you are right on the money re using a classic for daily/semi daily use if it works for you. I live in an urban area with a nasty 40 mile each way work commute so on normal workdays I use my Subaru WRX as a daily since missing work due to a mechanical breakdown is a big deal for me. For weekend work and local errands, I use my 96 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon with 200k miles about 100 miles/week. After being used by my wife and three kids it made its way back to me in need of some TLC. I've gone through it mechanically so it's pretty reliable now and had some cosmetics done without going overboard-have found when it looks nice you feel better using it more! While it's not the same as a 70s XJ6, somewhat frequent mechanical requirements/foibles and need for surveillance are similar-plenty of broken plastics after multiple heat/cool cycles over the years and most everything works except the sunroof and headlight washers which I don't miss. Strictly for weekend club meets and car shows is my 69 Lotus Elan-hard to imagine these were used daily back in time. Enjoy your channel quite a bit and am happy your business is going well-cheers.

Daily driving a classic is more of a hobby than a logical decision. For most it won’t be appealing or successful unless they really want it to be. It helps a lot having backup vehicles to turn to when the classic has issues. It also helps to have workshop space and time to tinker and fix things. Some mechanical sympathy and aptitude is essential to head off issues before they become breakdowns. Personally I prefer to daily something more modern and play with my classics at the weekend. I understand why you don’t want to get into the environmental debate a bit of a minefield and there will strong viewers aired.

Not sure it would make finantial sense with a V12, but with an inline-6 Jag, it still makes sense. Yes, it's double the fuel of my Mazda 3, but it is also a special experience to drive it.

I applause your commitment! Would not try it myself anymore, did once. Sold my restored ser1 to a banker who said he would have it as a winter car! I thought it was a crazy idea and later learned that so did he and went for a new Mini instead.

Just a comment on that. I also live in Sweden and depending where you live. If you live in a smaller town or in the countryside. Traffic is slower. Less stressful and easier to run a classic compared to the bigger cities.

Nice video Adam, thanks. How many kilometers do you have on your XJ6 ? What I really like about my 1983 XJ6 is the way it drives, it is such a pleasure to drive. I agree with you about the ecology with an old car, yes it burns more gas, but the minerals mined years ago are still being used, no energy was consumed to build a new auto, no new minerals mined, so it's good for the planet to use these cars and keep them going. Those are my thoughts.

I think the hardest part for you as a pro now is saying that the car's good to go.
My mantra was if you're replacing a component, e.g. a universal joint or hub, replace the lot while you're there.
The biggest danger to a classic is some running into you.

    • @LivingWithAClassic
      @LivingWithAClassic  3 місяці тому +1

All the hoses are just 3 years old. This one was damaged by me when I put it together so I feel safe just replacing one of them for me. Especially on my own car. It’s always very different if it’s on someone else’s car.
