I have never had a professional lesson & am just your every day chap attempting recipes to inspire you guys to try too. Most uploads are how to recipe cooking videos, but some fun is had too on Sunday Funday when anything goes, including giant foods, mini foods, taste testing foods sent from around the World, food gadgets and many more. Any requests for recipes / cool stuff you've seen let me know! I try my best to reply to as many comments as possible, but please interact with eachother and be respectful :-) #barrylewis

    My anzac biscuit recipe was passed down from my mother who got it from her mother and we do it exactly the same every time - looks (and probably tastes) quite different to yours here! Ours are golden brown, soft when fresh and crispy/thin with tiny bubbles in it when cold but after a few days soften again. We use full sized flattened oats not crushed oats as that is just so much better for taste and for texture plus looks nicer! The point of them was to get them thin and hard enough to survive posting in an envelope across the world to men fighting in the world war. I know fr a fact that my recipe variant worked but the question remains, would yours? :)

    ANZAC biscuits were a biscuit of choice for those on the home front to send to the lads at the front as they had a great degree of longevity for the long time it took to get from Australia to the Europe.
    I would respectfully disagree with your contention that corn syrup can replace the Golden Syrup.. GS is a part of the flavour profile! It wouldn't be an ANZAC biscuit without the GS. It'd be some sort of coconutty oatsy cookie)
    There are huge discussions here as to the way we like our "ANZACs" and that is, should they we soft and chewy or crunchy! My personal fave is crunchy and dunked in a cup of tea prior to getting one in ya mouth!

    • @Luciffrit
      @Luciffrit 8 років тому +1

      +rastas000 It really doesn't matter. Recipes change wherever they go. Some people might not be able to get Golden Syrup where they come from.

    • @rastas000
      @rastas000 8 років тому +2

      +Luciffrit but it wouldn't be an ANZAC biscuit.. ;)

    • @Luciffrit
      @Luciffrit 8 років тому

      rastas000 Yes it would, it would just have substituted ingredients. The rest of the ingredients are the same as is the method of producing them.
      Put it like this, an ANZAC would not of complained if he was presented with a cornsyrup biscuit.

    • @manheap12
      @manheap12 8 років тому +3

      +Luciffrit Well no. But corn syrup tastes completely different and arguably much worse. So you would've made a garbage biscuit. Use honey if you can't get golden syrup, it won't taste the same either but honey is better than corn syrup.
      Not to mention corn syrup is so much worse for humans and the environment.

    • @Luciffrit
      @Luciffrit 8 років тому

      manheap12 I don't think you read my post properly. Not to mention corn syrup being bad for the environment? I would ask you to explain but I think you made it up on the spot.

    My grandfather said during service in World War II One of his mates sister would send ANZAC biscuits that were tougher than the biscuit the Ration hard tack. Hard tack Need to be soaked in hot tea and even then you still soak until it softened enough to bite through. Well the legend goes they used to bash the ANZAC biscuits and a hardtack together and boil it up to make a porridge which they where quite happy about. But his mate sister got engaged and they sent a telegram to the groom at the wedding telling him to join up as he would get better fed.. Funny his mate never received another care package from his sister.

  • @sarahgael
    @sarahgael 8 років тому

    The while thing about them being part of WW1 food that was sent to the Front is actually false... "Rather than being sent to the front lines for the soldiers to eat as some people think, ANZAC biscuits were commonly eaten at galas, fetes and other public events such as parades, where they were sold to raise money to support the war effort." Is what wiki says. But I've heard a few different things.
    Just a little info xD
    I'm from New Zealand and these are my favourite bikkies I could eat all the mixture! I just don't add coconut to mind xD

    An international recipe that has a half decent chance of legally being able to be sold in Australia as an "ANZAC Biscuit", how uncommon.
    (In case you did not know, to market anything as ANZAC in Australia you need to apply to a government department [Department of Veterans Affairs], it is against the law to sell ANZAC merchandise without approval from DVA including ANZAC Biscuits. Recipes deviating greatly from the initial recipe or marketed as cookies or similar are generally rejected and thus can not be commercially sold legally [Coconut is a tolerated modification and has been included for at least 85 years )
    Corn Syrup should only be used if Golden is not avalible

    Not Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, because Corps sounds like a dead body, so it is pronounced Australia and New Zealand Cor. PS, I am a scout (in New Zealand it is both boys and girls) and I was in this years (2015) ANZAC dawn parade, because it was exactly a century since the ANZAC landings in 1915

    What about trying to authentically recreate your old 80's school dinners as a series, eh? Combine suggestions and memories from pals and wot not. I only say this because these look like something called 'melting moments' we used to have at lunch. There was a dinner lady who used to make fantastic cakes and always kept one aside for me even though the que had ended. Although, the food in primary school was fuc.. **ahem** flipping horrible for the most part. **SPAM FRITTERS.. TRY 'EM ON YER KIDS!** Blegh.

    First, never use corn syrup. It is not a true substitute for Golden Syrup. Second a tip. When measuring Golden Syrup, Maple Syrup, molasses, honey or anything like them. lightly oil the measuring device. That way the syrup will not stick to the spoon or whatever is being used. That is a tip this "home cook" needed before putting the syrup into a bowl then having it scrapped out and leaving a lot behind. There really is a difference between "home cooks" (like this one) trying to be superstars of the UA-cam screen and real chefs.
