Oh the naginata is what nobushi uses in the game for honor. Not am I only learning about weapons im also learning about the games I play from shad, and comments help just as much. Thx people!
Japanese naginata were basically the Japanese equivalent of a sword staff. They're more commonly linked to glaives because both have single edged blades, but given Japanese swords had single edged blades to begin with, slimmer naginata were basically staff with swords on the end
M8 the amount of fkn range and leverage I’d start using the pommel for pure blunt force trauma which should fuck up my enemies even more by disestablishing their economy for them to even have a chance at living or just fuck with them mentally knowing I could’ve killed them but decided to fuck them up for life
Joshua Christofferson most polearms had a counterweight on the other end...the Greek dory, the medieval poleaxe, the pike...I’d honestly be surprised if the swordstaff didn’t have one.
Beast hunting you say? we'll look no further for weapons than yharnam home of the blood ministration! Don't use the blood though you might die or something
I wonder if it'd be hard to find physical evidence of a weapon like the swordstaff, thanks to it's blade shape. After all, if you find a rusted sword blade during an archaeological dig, the first thought is "OH, IT'S A SWORD!" I'm going to assume you made this video thanks to my referencing of the swordstaff in that double-sword video. I know it isn't the case, but it makes me happy to think that it is. So thanks, Shad! Glad I could inspire you! ;D (Nice touch with your shield depicted the swedish flag when you mentioned those swedish warriors, by the way!) You mentioning using the crossguard as a spike reminded me of another underappreciated historical weapon... Chinese Dagger-Axes! They are a bit like a spear, but with a second blade set perpendicular to the shaft for striking. A Jumonji Yari would also be quite similar. So many awesome Eastern weapons, overshadowed by the damn katana...

I think a swordspear may be great for Witchers in replacement to their silver longswords, as it would give them great cutting ability through the sword blade and cutting power through the spear length. Not to mention the extra safety you'd get from using a spear, something we know humans used to hunt "gigantic, wild beasts," versus a longsword, something more commonly used in duels or self defense.
This weapon is a response to the famous question: "What about dragons?" If you can harness the power of sunlight, you hunt (or ride if you are a maverick) dragons with a swordspear.
The naginata isn't quite the same; the blade's generally shorter. However, there is a good comparison; the nagamaki. Imagine a no-dachi, the Japanese greatsword, but wrapped all the way to about halfway its blade's length - that's where the name comes from, half-wrapped. It does come out, though, as a sword-staff and later nagamaki were created specifically that way. Usually by taking cheaper katana and bolting them to the end of a stick.
I would like to point out that sword staffs like weapons were also used in China in regards to the Quan Dao which was more like a clever on staff, but still similar.
The Han had sword staffs that looked like this one too. It’s called the Pi. The Han actually produced more Pi than Ji surprisingly, but it’s just records from one Han armory.
No more compromise, no more deciding between Swords and Spears. So next time you think "what would be the best to use here/what your they use?" - Swordstaff is the answer for all of those.
The other thing about the swordstaff is that a lot more complex metallurgy goes into a sword blade than a poleaxe or spear blade. Swords were hard to make, compared to axes or hammers or spikes or even spear points. Of course they were less common when you can't afford to make as many of them.
The yari (Japanese spear) is pretty much a sword staff with a double edged blade. The naginata (and moreso the nagamaki) is pretty much a sword staff with a single edged blade.
yes, I think the naginata fits better to the description tough, here is a depiction of a samurai with a naginata from japanese art: images4.fanpop.com/image/photos/14900000/japanese-art-samurai-14996624-290-412.jpg
@@HighSpirits217 Yes, there are variations. But having short versions doesn't negate yari from being sword staffs. Look up omi no yari (or just omi yari).
Yari are few and far between, they are one of the most varied spears out their, you will have to find the specific name of yari you are referring too, for exemple, jumongi yari is the Japanese spear with two slightly angled forward double edge blades on the side, a bit like a cross-trident.
Hah, I accidentally reinvented this while thinking about the double-sword video you put up recently. "You know, a staff would be cheaper than the second blade and would give you the parry ability and the option to just whack someone with a stick..." I guess humanity really hasn't changed that much have we XD

@Dillon Brunschon They were literally just super long pikes, alexander the great's armies used them. They worked well obviously. Pilums were just javelins made to have a flimsy head so they would bend after landing making the shield hard to use.
i was thinking of dark souls...specifically dragon slayer ornstein.... granted its not really a "sword" more spearish but the hand guards on the sides were massive
swordstaffs were always my favorite. in belegarth, the glaives are a slight bit overpowered, but with a swordstaff you can use both ends of the blade and there is more blade to cut with, and if you add a stabbing tip then it just makes fighting so much better.
Some people looking in to these suspect they are either re-purposed bear hunting spears or an evolution of bear-spears used at the time in southern/middle Sweden the work "Skalltyg och jaktspjut" by Torsten Lenk talks aobut this and I remember reading something like quillioned spears for bearhunting (knävelspjut) being at times owned by the crown and at times required for some peasants to own. For some information of their construction from famous swordsmith Peter Johnsson see the second to last post in this thread: myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.14966.html
@@spacemegalodon5049 well, first of all, I suck ass at dodging projectiles, I can't keep up my guard with a million clones mucking about shooting at me, his melee grab was essentially a one shot, even if I hid behind the pillars, the air barrage thing would keep hitting me. The groundspike destroys my health bar like it is nothing. Gael and Midir were easier. That is not even a joke.
As a Dane larping and trying a bit of reenactment, wanting to use a weapon more unique to Scandinavia (not just Sweden) I have also tried using a sword staff. I made a sword staff with a 1,65 meters height to the crossguard and 65 cm blade. The blade and crossguard were only weighing 600 grams as there were not added any weight to the blade for balance. I found you had quite a bit more of control over your opponents weapon with a sword staff than any other polearm I have tried. I also found that if you had the length so that the crossguards were a bit shy of your full height, you could fence with it similarly to two-handed sword, but with greater reach. When fencing it was quite easy to switch between far and near combat, to the point where I ditched the offhand dagger I normally carry in the right hand when fighting with spears. I simply didn't need a quick an dirty cc weapon for when a sword and shield got past the point. Finally, when I decided to stop trying reenactment fighting, I sharpened the blade to test how it managed to cut. I found that against non to lightly armoured pork, the sword staff did horrendous damage. It even managed to cut through a discarded arming jacket! However, as soon as the pork had any kind of metal armour, the sword staff where quite underwhelming compared to a poleaxe. So, if your opponents are Calvary or lightly armoured enemies I would say the sword staff is superior. It might also be in close formations where you don't have space for heavy swings.
This is now officially my new favorite melee weapon, thank you Shad. Here's an idea: instead of normal quillons you use a pair of spikes like from a war pick. That'd be pretty top-heavy, so maybe add a large blunt hook for catching feet or mace head for blunt trauma to the other end as a kind of counter-weight? Tell me what you think!
There’s a random still frame at 10:35 where Shad is saying “it’s a matter of context.” A bald dude with a sword in hand and swords behind him on the wall. Is this a reference to something?
It's a reference to Matt Easton of the channel Scholagladiatoria. He's a HEMA instructor who makes great videos about historical combat, arms and armour. And his favourite word is "context".
A friend, who is in hema pointed out to me, that this weapon would be superb in breakung up a 'Gewalthaufen' or violance mob, in english. With that, we mean any group of armed people, that have an outer lane of warriors armed with pikes and spears. These should give protection against horses and other enemy units, for the fighters inside this formation, who used all sorts of shorter range weapons. A swordstaff could breake such an hedghog formation and pose a significant thread to other meele weapons. Not to say, sweden was allwayw low on warriors. So they had to get an advantge over equipment and training
I am a big fan of the "swordspear". As one who's been a student of martial arts, I felt like I needed to create my own longsword. I ended up making two that are very swordspear-ish. One out of a piece of re-bar with a split piece of bamboo bracing each side of the handle to give it the right shape (then wrapped in ducktape) for weight training, and the other out of a goalie's stick I got from my neighbor. If you are interested in the dimensions for one of your own to test: Holding your arm bend at a 90 degree angle (like one would with a walking stick/trekking pole) hold something to take the measure to the top of your fist-this is the full length of the sword. The handle length is determined by measuring the distance from the crook of the elbow to the middle finger. For reference I am 6ft, and my sword is 46in. overall with a blade length of 30 in. and a handle length of 16in. Because it's made out of a goalie stick there is no cross guard, but I am currently writing a novel that features the sword. It has a single fuller, the cross guard is triangular (similar in shape to a taiji sword's, but extending past the edge of the blade) and the base of the blade has a 2.5-3in. ricasso before the fuller starts. o7

This weapon is a response to the famous question: "What about dragons?"
If you can harness the power of sunlight, you hunt (or ride if you are a maverick) dragons with a swordspear.
This should actually be a pretty effective weapon against dragons. Depending on the size, a regular spear might just not penetrate deep enough.

No more compromise, no more deciding between Swords and Spears. So next time you think "what would be the best to use here/what your they use?" - Swordstaff is the answer for all of those.
And carry a greatsword for back up.

And of course the Japanese comments are here
I'd say a naginata would be closer to a sword staff. Since a yari has various blade lengths which can be very short.

Look up omi no yari (or just omi yari).
Yari are few and far between, they are one of the most varied spears out their, you will have to find the specific name of yari you are referring too, for exemple, jumongi yari is the Japanese spear with two slightly angled forward double edge blades on the side, a bit like a cross-trident.

and BAM! it's in my D&D campaign. thank you shad for showing us these underappreciated yet straight up cool weapons!
It should be easy to play one of these with the stats of a halberd.
I like how the shield changes when you say a country, by the way, whos the guy at 10:35
