  • KTM DDS Clutch Adjustment, Replacement, Maintenance and Settings - Cycle News
    The KTM DDS Clutch is unique. DDS stands for Damped Diaphragm Steel and the system uses a single spring component to handle the pressure duties inside the clutch. That single spring component is called the diaphragm spring-also often called a bevel spring- and it’s used instead of coil springs found inside other off-road clutch systems. The benefits of the KTM DDS Clutch are easier clutch pull, lighter weight and the integration of a clutch damping system into the clutch hub to increase durability without sacrificing traction.
    Adjusting the KTM DDS Clutch is different than traditional clutches. So, if you’re adjusting, replacing or just inspecting the DDS clutch system, it’s important to follow some simple steps.
    Note: KTM DDS clutches are identical in four-strokes or two-strokes. Always work on your machine with the assistance of your owners manual for machine-specific components, settings and special tools you may need.

    Great video. Thanks! I don't understand at 5:02. What is sharper edge in steel plates? Why that points to the outside of the bike?

    With a 300xcw 2011, the clutch drags a tad, even with a properly bled line. What is the most common cause? The springs would need replacing?

    Just out of interest what is the year and model bike that you are working on? The reason that I ask is that I'm having clutch drag issues with my 2013 300 EXC (UK). I noticed that your pressure plate has locating holes in it for the steel sleeves that the plain plates run on. My pressure plate does not have these holes, the sleeves are shorter on my engine and they just butt up against the pressure plate.

    The settings weren't really explained, what is the difference between 1, 2 and 3? How is that set?

    • @tricktracks6876
      @tricktracks6876 5 років тому +1

      The manual explains it as: start with 1, then 2, then 3. The video says use the setting that it was disassembled with which seems like a good start to me.

    • @dynamotightstar3472
      @dynamotightstar3472 3 роки тому +1

      You've probably sorted this by now but 1 is a lighter clutch pull. Technical Riding.
      2 is the stock position for everyday use.
      3 is a header pull used for Motocross. Clutch will wear slower but is harder to pull.
      I've just done mine and switched to 1 and it's light as a feather now.

    Should the 6 bolts be loosened & tightened in a criss cross /star pattern ? Seems you go circular?

    • @cyclenews
      @cyclenews  6 років тому

      Generally, we always final torque in a cross pattern. initial tightening might be circular depending on how well we think we can control our muscles. But you're right. It's always better to torque across a pattern, not in a circle.

    The 2017 KTM 350SXF has the standard clutch springs, which KTM four strokes have the pressure ring setup, that replaces the clutch springs ?

    • @cyclenews
      @cyclenews  6 років тому

      The new motocross and XC models all have a diaphragm spring now. There are some years where some have traditional springs and others don't. Even the 250 SX-F gets the big bevel washer spring for 2019. However, it's not "damped" via the rubbers. Apparently the HP output of the 350-up is the deciding factor of the damper use.

  • @rjm7168
    @rjm7168 7 років тому +2

    So by "top" on the thin ring that goes on the pressure plate, I assume you mean make sure it's the side with top on it faces outward, not toward the top of the bike. :)

      @@riderblank8010 yeah, that's an occurrence. We had dirt bike fresh off the lot awhile back, that had a smallll hairline crack in the block. Took it around the loop and the engine blew apart. I know failures are common on new and revised models considering that the manufacturers haven't necessarily worked out every bug, snake and cockroach out of their products

    • @cyclenews
      @cyclenews  6 років тому

      Late reply here, sorry! Shavings on the magnet are pretty normal. There is alway stuff wearing inside. There is a little inherent play in the outer basket but there shouldn't be too much on the inner hub and/or in a direction that would indicate a problem with a bearing.
