I always found Dick York to be very sexy. He’s very controlling yes, and dominating - but perhaps that’s part of his masculine charm. He wasn’t violent or mean just a bit controlling but he clearly loved his wife. Their on screen chemistry was magical. He just couldn’t let her be “a witch” because well… that’s the whole premise of the show : that it’s forbidden… but having said that, in terms of plot and narrative, she also agreed to that, and so you can’t really blame Darrin for expecting her to adhere to their agreement. She was a witch and never had to agree to anything she didn’t want - she was very powerful - but chose to live the life of a mortal and so the psychological boundaries were set by her really - not him! It’s what she wanted. That’s why feminists shouldn’t harp on about how chauvinistic he was. It was part of their agreement. The same as I Dream of Jeannie. In both shows, the main characters are not “human”. They’re superhuman or entities and so the usual standards of gendering can’t apply to these supernatural characters who are living in the world of their own accord. In Jeannie’s case as a “genie” she was obliged to serve whomever released her from her bottle. That’s how the mythology works. And it happened to be major Tony Nelson. Barbara Eden has spoken at length on various chat shows since, about Jeannie being an entity not a woman and how the usual feminist arguments don’t apply. An entity is not a human. It’s like expecting dogs or cats to follow human rules. People boss their pets around or leash them or train or control them but it doesn’t mean they are being mean or nasty to them. They love them and are helping them according to that entity or being’s condition. It’s part of a different set of rules pertaining to non-humans. Of course, feminists will find a way regardless to circumvent the logic of that mythopœia, and say that it’s still a show and that it portrays women as subservient. My argument to that is that I never - either as a child nor as an adult now - saw either Samantha nor Jeannie as subservient. In fact, I felt them both to always have the power in their relationships. They were both female ingenues who had incredible resources and self-control, self-awareness as well as kindness. They possessed the best qualities of female empowerment without ever coming across as nasty or aggressive. They had complete control and power in every relationship and yet maintained their femininity. These qualities are perennial and perhaps why both shows are still watched even in 2024 when there has been such a degradation of morals and human relationships. They speak to universal qualities of love, kindness, fun and family. It’s just sad that we need to have non-human characters portray the best qualities of being human rather than actual “humans” as the principle characters. We need to see heightened spiritual qualities in order to demonstrate what a proper human should be like.
