Here, here! Dick York was perfect - he brought a "realness" to the role of a mortal who discovers that the wife and all the in-laws are immortals and has to cope with the high-jinks they bring!
One of my favorite episodes. The only part I didn't like is Darrin's coming in and starts screaming at Sam for something her mother did. But in this scene, Darrin looks at Sam and asks her if they'd ever met. It's like deep down, he knew that this was the woman that he wanted in his life. As I was watching this, the scene in the first episode where Shiela's snobbery got under Sam's skin/nose and her warning to Darrin about getting too close.
White dinner jacket over Tuxedo trousers. It is undress-formal. I know that sounds weird...but the white jacket is undress (less formal). Wouldn't be popular again till Rick in Magnum PI and Harrison Ford movies...both in the 80s
It is just style, clothing and grooming. After the 70s men just tried to keep the 15/16 year old look (hair, clothes, posture) as many women did. They keep it far too long and look silly in their 40s with a pot belly hanging over low cut bluejeans and receding hair. York did look older as he was pretty sick at this time and may not have known it.
They don't look that old. Dick York was around 36 to 41 when he was on the show. He looked about that age. The clothes and hairstyle are old fashioned now, so that's what you're looking at.
Unfortunately that chemistry only worked York's direction and lead to uncomfortable feelings. I agree York as Darrin is comic gold ,but a bad back ended a great career far too early.
@@wh4193 when Dick York was relaxing between takes in Bewitched, he would often stare at Elizabeth Montgomery and mouthed the words, l love you. This would make Elizabeth uncomfortable and she would often t complain to her husband, William Asher who was the producer of the show. I read about this in a book about Bewitched. Dick York admitted in one video that he was in love with Elizabeth Montgomery. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
@@dianetheisen8664 Exactly. Although people using Tabatha/Tabitha have an excuse since it was spelled both ways on the show (Elizabeth Montgomery picked out the name "Tabitha" and cringed when she saw it spelled "Tabatha" in the credits. It wasn't corrected until a few years later)
@@stanloretta92 That's true about Tabitha/Tabatha. I saw her name spelled as Tabatha on a mobile above her crib, so I figured that was the correct spelling. But I agree with Elizabeth Montgomery, I prefer Tabitha.
Darrin did not try to change Samantha. Darrin married what he thought was a normal mortal woman. No one could force Samantha to change or do anything she didn't want to do. Samantha loved Darrin and agreed to live a live without witchcraft. I think Samantha was bored with the instant gratification of witchcraft. Watch the beginning of the first episode. Samantha is walking in the city, not popping around by witchcraft like her relatives did. Endora tried a few times to break up Samantha's marriage by bringing some of Sam's warlock ex-boyfriends around and Samantha turned them away. Samantha said, may times on the show, that she enjoyed the mortal life and liked doing things herself without witchcraft.
@@richardgarcia618 A lot of people forget that. Sam would have been outta there if she wanted to be. She didn't, she loved Darrin and wanted to have time with him.
Sam's flight suit made her invisible to humans. They showed her for the sake of the viewer. I loved it when they made Sam appear transparent. A couple of examples of this is when Sam walked through the wall into Larry's office in NO HARM CHARM and DADDY COMES FOR A VISIT, where Maurice and Darrin pop into a client's office to eavesdrop on a meeting. 🙂
After Samantha realizes that Darrin isn't happier without her, and she pops out, she returns to the present day (her present day), and she confronts her mother about Darrin not being happier without her (Samantha). Of course, Endora isn't happy about that, but she brings Darrin back to his reality married to Samantha. Then Darrin says that although there are times when he gets ticked off at Sam, the majority of the time he is very happy. They kiss, and the episode ends. I really liked this episode a lot. It combined time travel with magic and, in the end, Sam finds out that Darrin's love for her is real.
Darrin found the woman of his dreams, and then through eight series of this program tried to bully and shame her into living by his own boring, conservative values, rather than encourage her to be the vivacious woman she was before she met him.
Sam neglected to tell Darrin about her abilities until after they were married, now granted I agree with you that Darrins behavior towards Sam and his children's witchcraft was abhorrent at times throughout the series.
Darrin never bullied Samantha. He didn't even know that she is a witch. They were both in love. He is honest and wants to be the breadwinner and provide for her. No need for witchcraft.
In one of the 1st episodes he calls her a liar- she leaves, he apologizes. Another episode, she’s get ‘mashed’ by his client & turns him into a dog-- he blames her for his client’s bad behavior-she’s hurt, he apologies. And….Larry! Larry has a seemingly wonderful wife, he only shows her contempt & insults her. The decades show the sexist attitudes about women & marriage
Darrin was quite cruel to Samantha in too many episodes. And she forgives him far too quickly if you ask me. Yeah, I agree... he didn't know she was a witch when they married. Samantha was wrong for that. But he had extremely high expectations- inhumane at times - and so what else was she supposed to do? He expected her to be the best lil housewife from Day 1 - no experience cooking or cleaning. (It's not like her Mom taught her how to fix eggs or wash laundry)... And he and his buddies just dropped in at all times without warning. Often with their wives or gfs. She was expected to be a perfect cook, keep the house perfect 24/7, become a gardener and landscaper, decorator, laundress, and run his errands without a car... And he accused her of nonsense, all too often behaving like a child himself! Throwing tantrums! Let's not forget how he allowed his clients (and their daughters, granddaughters, and wives) to insult and humiliate her all the time.
@@stanloretta92 maybe as a recurring character. But a lot of the stories were centered around either the house(domestic) or Darrin's job. He wouldn't have much to do. Bewitched evolved the supporting characters as potential complications to the Darrin and Sam dynamic. Gladys Kravitz was the nosey neighbor that threatened to expose Sam. Larry was the boss that could fire Darrin over all the magical antics going on that causes them to lose business. Sam's family was there to disrupt the Stephen's household and drive a wedge between the couple. The show is about a married couple trying to keep their marriage alive despite external forces poised to keep them apart. Dave could only work as a Roger Healey type character in the long run. He knows about Sam and there's this added drama of whether he can keep the secret.
Thing is, Samantha would have been better off without an overbearing controlling droog. They did make Darrin more amenable to her natural gifts a few years later, with Dick Sargeant.
