I didn't get into 40k until I became an adult. Of late I've been romanced by the second edition models and I think it is because they look more like game pieces than modern models do. Modern models and terrain on a tabletop look like a diorama (I love it for that) but the old models and terrain on a tabletop look like a game. The former so attractive I don't wanna touch it for fear of ruining the scene, the latter I can't wait to touch and play the game. The painting styles of each era reflect this as well.
These old models are still very useable. Just pop them on a larger base with a tactical rock to give a bit of height and they can fit right in. Im using old metal scouts with a mostly primaris army and they look great on the board
Last year, I got my first 40K box set but only recently did I finally start painting. I am now on my third box set and nearly complete. Let me say, I wish I began on this hobby years ago. Painting has been such a blast and it’s opened my eyes to awesome channels like this! Especially loving these 90’s themed episodes and the Sigmar content. Your videos are always such bangers! Keep up the great work!
Looks great in modern style! The 90's marines have a certain 'no f-wording around'-vibe that the newer marines and primaris don't really have, though I don't prefer one over the other.
I painted all my 2nd edition Space Marines with contrast paint, along with my Horus Heresy Space marines. They integrate nicely into one army, and I think they look better than Primaris.
Eyyyy I remember saying in a comment you should do this and it looks great. It shows that there's space for both styles in this hobby as they both look fantastic.
7:18 They look like siblings that come from the same family, but one of them had a growth spurt, and the Older Brother probably calls the tall one "little brother".🤣
Whoa, congrats on fatherhood my man! You'll be raising your own little Guardsman, very happy for you and I wish you the best. Love the videos to boot too lol
Experienced painters in the comments, i don't get it, what is the point of a zenithal like that if you cover it with 2 coats of opaque base coat after that ?
UA-camrs copy techniques they don't fully understand to look more pro. Always wondered why nobody addresses it in the comments. As you said, if your base coat is dark or just too thick, you miss the whole point of the zenithal undercoat. In this case, the black and white primer had not enough contrast to begin with, so when the second layer of the base color hit the model, any benefit was lost. But I've seen worst here on YT. I've seen people apply a thick basecoat of dark brown and nobody addressed it in the comments. I think it goes with the black gloves bundle. Then he added blue highlights making the entire black and white primer totally unnecessary, and again, with very little contrast. If he's not pushing for contrast then the whole thing is quite inefficient. Black and white zenithal primer should be used if you really need the model to tell you where to transition colors. But if you're the one pushing the highlights and or shadows from a flat basecoat, just skip it. "No, but the reflection of light..." Yeah yeah. If 99% of the effect is lost, you're doing it wrong :s
@@electo21 It shows through. Go buy three cans of spray paint. White, black and blue. You can then experiment with light and dark base coats under the blue on a larger scale than a mini allows for. You'll see the contrast in side by side samples.
Whilest I do love both old and new models, for me the reason for them is the difference in how they look and feel. old models have a certain character and classic feel new modesl lack new models have a sort of shiny and cool feel that the older models lack, even when switching back and forth between painting styles my opinion doesnt change, all of em look damn awesome

Haha. For the YT viewers of course. I love both ways of painting. I like to keep my old boys in their original style really, but it's fun to experiment. :)
“Modern models have become better”. I would say that’s very subjective as I disagree with that statement 100%. They are technically better, things like sharpness and the amount of detail that’s possible, yes. But whether that makes them better or not is up to each individual. I think modern models are way too busy, there’s too much detail, and the bases and poses are just ridiculous. I much prefer the simplicity of older models and I think they have much more character as a result.
Can you make your content inclusive by formatting the auto captioning into closed captioning please? it is extremely hard to watch it relying only on the auto captioning sadly (I'm Profoundly Deaf)
I do agree, but it's interesting to see what you can acheive with modern techniques. I think it's a testament to how good these models are that they could still fit into "modern" 40k!
Check FlexiSpot C7 ergonomic chair at bit.ly/4fO2ls5 and use my code ''24BFC7'' to get $50 off on the C7 ergonomic chair.
No. Never. Cover my casket in sand and paint it Goblin Green.
I want to be buried with all of my 90s toys.
@dr_keenbean gotcha covered buddy. Lowes has an acrylic house paint thats basically goblin green!

What a great point. I'd never really thought of them that way before. So true.
Agreed! I love watching these videos as a way to get a sense for the history of 40K.

tactical rock is my favorite genre
Rocks for the win. I love the look of the old lads! I was surprised what a "new" paint scheme could do to the old lads. Quality models.
I enjoy seeing these kinds of videos, as it's just a different feel from a lot of the rest of everything else.
This is exactly the video I've been looking for since the original challenge. Brilliant!
Glad you liked it!

They're both excellent, for different reasons. Nostalgia hits hard with the old boys though.
@@BroadswordWargaming they got the stance just right!

That was super interesting Ollie. More of this would be great
Glad you enjoyed it!

The oils are a game changer in shadining. I need to try some
It's time!
Don't really feel like spending 40+ hours painting my guardsmen when I'm struggling to paint them in the "old style".
Just get them painted however you can. :) And enjoy it.

Really interesting to see how painting has changed in 20 years! I really should pick a brush up again.
Go for it! 🎉
I think the old miniatures are still excellent, and that newer models are perhaps only "better" as a matter of opinion and proportion.
And detail
@@drebodollaz3504 sometimes too much detail is a bad thing.
@@xyonblade I personally like the less detailed minis but I’m new to painting

Ah, thanks so much! Yeah, it certainly keeps us busy haha
It looks nice but they will always have yellow trim, red bolters, vibrant blue armor for me. Still got a bottle of real citadel goblin green.
Looks great. In the process of building a 2nd edition army. How about trying classic colors but using modern techniques like the oils and such?
Experienced painters in the comments, i don't get it, what is the point of a zenithal like that if you cover it with 2 coats of opaque base coat after that ?
If nothing else it gives you a guide to where you want to place light and shade in successive coats.

Thank you!
You forgot to drill the barrels ;)
NEVER!
I do wonder what would happen if you took that 90s paint job and applied the oil pin wash to it in the same manner. Would it be close?
I'm now tempted to do that. I prohbably should pin wash them anyway.
Whilest I do love both old and new models, for me the reason for them is the difference in how they look and feel.

I like the look of this retro figure with modern paint techniques. Very interesting video.
Thanks for watching!
I dislike the taticool sculps, the classics just have a certain charm. Good work on the paint job.
I actually prefer the 90s style! 😄

@BroadswordWargaming A combination could be good 👍 I've not taken the leap to oils yet so can't say one way or the other
Pretty nice ! I would have added dry pigment on the feet for a more modern result ! But that’s great anyway !
I normally bang a tonne of sand pigment, but didnt want to cover the scheme! :)
I like this, thank you, I'll follow this for my 2nd edition marines ❤😊
:) Glad you liked it. I think paint them however you can, as long as you enjoy it :)
NO! 90's space marine aesthetic is superior.
My 2nd edition armies would agree. 90's is the best way.
Looking good, but please drill the barrel of his bolter.
Even back in the day I did this and it just adds something to the "realism" of the model.
I will NEVER! Haha. Yeah, it's not something I have ever really done tbh. Probably should.
oli, wasn't benji ,meant to put a video out by now?
Probably.. yeah, haha. I'll tell him tonight.
