Favourite instrumental of all time, speaking for myself of course. Sorry, guilty pleasure, I absolutely love Alex's alternate reality, " I'd like to introduce my back up band" pure Alex GOLD! Rush has fun, the crowd is totally into it and that really is the point of a concert, enjoy yourselves. Glad you enjoyed it Justin.
The part when Alex starts being is awesome weird self was cool. I remember when I saw this tour in Milwaukee, Alex was rambling on about his dreams and nightmares. He definitely has a bizarre sense of humor and seeing Neil and Geddy laughing was priceless! 😂😂😂
Those bass fills during the first dream solo were nice. Imagine going through life working and living with friends like these guys were? There are 2 guys that do reactions… something Vegas.. did a La Village Strangiatto reaction and nailed it. They nailed it so good that RUSH even sent them a gift box.
In terms of a showcase of their individual talents I think I put this ahead of YYZ (ZED) because it’s Rock, Jazz, Blues etc! Each a master of their individual instruments!!!
Well, it is Alex's nightmare and cartoon monsters being in it sounds most appropriate 😅 ❤ Not only one of my favourite Rush songs but one of my favourite songs of all time.
I was going to say the same thing I can't remember where it is on UA-cam but it's on there somewhere and it's hilarious he comes up with different people every single time to introduce Neil and Geddy. It's bleeping hilarious 😂
Killer performance! You're right, they were really "in it" on this performance. Everything was spot-on the nuggets with this. Plus they had all that weird fun, with the Alex Lifeson "spoken word" slo-jam, haha! Great stuff!
I love the section with Alex's solo in and all his guitar parts whilst Geddy is on keys. Don't forget the section you don't like is called Monsters, which is the music from the cartoon which is supposed to be in Alex's dream, next time you listen to it think off someone doing jazz hands to it 😂😂😂. Alex's deliberately sounding out of tune jazz chords to ipanema is sublime, probably my favourite version of this track, although the intro to it on Time Machine Tour is fun when they play in the style of a German umpah band as a callback to the Sausage Haus interlude video
I really like the live recordings because Alex stands out in the mix more. You get to hear and see how much of a bad ass he is compared to studio recordings when he is sometimes buried beneath keyboards and drums etc. He is such an amazing player live. They all are
Alex is so goofy. 😂 The crazy just builds up until he has to let it blow off sometimes. 🤯 This is also one of my faves, but the R30 version *might* edge it out. Also has Alex doing his silly monologue , but it also captures Neil and Geddy laughing at his antics. Both are great.
I think I recall Geddy saying due to royalties they’d be charged around 40,000 dollars to keep The Girl From Ipanema in the DVD. Despite this, they decided to keep it 👍
Here’s the other thing about Rush. Whether its the song, the singer, the band, or the style that you don’t like/care for, this performance is testament to and there is no denying their technical ability and musicianship they possess as individuals and as a group.🤷♂️That’s all. To not recognize that, just makes you a bigoted, ignorant person.😮Sorry but it’s true, didn’t mean to offend or hurt anyone’s feelings.😢🤘🖖✌️🎸🎹🥁🎤
I fully agree !! That Monster section is a buzz kill....Then again what can you do to raise the song after that amazing guitar solo ? Well, I have a few ideas !!! 🤣🤣🤣 Exit Stage Left has my favourite live version of this song.
A lot of Cool stuff in this version and I agree with most of your commentary but I am still partial to the ESL Version due to the Full Guitar Intro,The Middle Solo, The Synth Embellishments, and the Bass and Percussion Fills. This is probably my 2nd favorite version due to it not being as Mechanical as most of the other renditions
And me, I love the power, my favourite instrumental of all time; sorry it is. Alex's solo spot on and that bass sound hitting your chest. 🦖🦖🦖 I like monsters
I was 14 years old. My father came downstairs, without a word and typed this into my computer. I watched in awe, as the metal I had listened to years prior came to a halt. He made me watch O'Baterista, and various other performances from this same concert when I was 9, I didn't really "get" it then. 15 years later I'm the biggest Rush fan I know. This song hooked me, & I have it tattooed on my arm forever. this very performance, sprung me into everything I know musically, as a guitarist.
1 thank you so much for playing the album and its entirety. 2 thanks for being honest about yourself to the music instead of what people want to hear. 3 thanks for being a rush fan.
I think I like this version the best of all the ones I've seen, and Alex being his usual goofy self is a definite highlight. Looking forward to The Spirit Of Radio tomorrow!! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐
I believe this tour they just took that section of this song and let Alex just improvise whatever he wanted to say or "sing." I find it hilarious and cracks me up every time. Yes, just three goofy guys 🤪
and who does a drum transition fill going UP, Neil Peart that is who. and does it so flawlessly. This version and the version of show of hands are, in my little opinion, the 2 better ones. Just wish on the Show of Hands we could hear what Alex was saying. they censored it out. this was great though, my "back up band". great reaction JP
Easily the best live rendition of LVS evah. Alex's classic rant is just icing on the cake. I mean, it's always a good sign when your audience is singing along to an instrumental. And Justin, the cure for not liking the Monsters section of La Villa -- watch five Looney Tunes cartoons a day and call me in the morning. 😃
Not a musician, but I wonder if because it’s very technical that it’s hard for them to be emotive with this song. Maybe being in front of that crowd added a little extra to their playing that you could sense when you listened to it. It’s funny that you called that one part Mickey Mouse. When Lost in Vegas watched this, they didn’t like that part either and one of them likened it to a song from Disney’s Aladdin. Felt it was too happy.
I saw them once in Mansfield, MA and Alex’s rant was about smoking tobacco and other stuff. I think this whole concert has something about it because of the reception they received having never realized how big they were in Brazil. Pretty sure that’s the biggest crown they ever played for and they gave it everything they had.
@WeDanceWestie - Alex? Surely you mean Stan Getz!
The part when Alex starts being is awesome weird self was cool. I remember when I saw this tour in Milwaukee, Alex was rambling on about his dreams and nightmares. He definitely has a bizarre sense of humor and seeing Neil and Geddy laughing was priceless! 😂😂😂
The Boys from Ipanema
Those bass fills during the first dream solo were nice.

Not one millisecond is cheap, perfection. Greatest rock instrumental of all time.
Well, it is Alex's nightmare and cartoon monsters being in it sounds most appropriate 😅 ❤
Not only one of my favourite Rush songs but one of my favourite songs of all time.
I am in complete agreement, all time great Rush track for me. 👍👍👏👏👏
If you search Alex Lifeson Rants you can see many of them. He came up with a different one at every show for that tour.
I was going to say the same thing I can't remember where it is on UA-cam but it's on there somewhere and it's hilarious he comes up with different people every single time to introduce Neil and Geddy. It's bleeping hilarious 😂
They were so unbelievably in the pocket for this show
Killer performance! You're right, they were really "in it" on this performance. Everything was spot-on the nuggets with this. Plus they had all that weird fun, with the Alex Lifeson "spoken word" slo-jam, haha! Great stuff!
Justin, the part you don't like, they stole from Looney Tunes...Also La Villa Strangiato came from Alex's nightmares...
"Milton Baaaanana." Perfect! (I have some of Milton's recordings.) "...and I'm Stan Getz." Even more perfect.
The part you don't like is from Powerhouse by Raymond Scott, it really is a Looney Tune ;) The Girl from Ipanema section apparently cost them $40k!
sounded great whit some extra,(la villa strangerio )l.o.l🎸🥁🎸
I will never tire of the moment they kick back in after Alex says, “…and I’m Stan Getz!” So powerful.
I love the section with Alex's solo in and all his guitar parts whilst Geddy is on keys. To add some context La Villa was based on an Alex's dream (or nightmare?) So I always thought that goofy part made sense.
the riff you dont like is from an old bugs bunny cartoon
Yes, “Powerhouse” was the piece they “borrowed” that from. Didn’t Rush catch a little bit of hell for that back in the day?
Such a perfect band
I really like the live recordings because Alex stands out in the mix more. You get to hear and see how much of a bad ass he is compared to studio recordings when he is sometimes buried beneath keyboards and drums etc. He is such an amazing player live. They all are

LA VILLA STRANGIATO…THE STRANGE VILLAGE LIVE IN RIO…THATS THE FOCUS OF THIS EDITION OF GERALDO 😛😛😛😝😝😝😜😜😜🤪🤪🤪😎😎😎
while more famous as the assembly line music from looney tunes, it is actually from a 1936 jazz/swing song ua-cam.com/video/HnzLconK4Tw/v-deo.html
How do rank Geddy as a bassist ? Average? Underrated? Overrated?
Best of all time💯🤘🏼
He's good.
The part you don't like is from a 1937 jazz number called Powerhouse.
I like the Time Machine version, all the better for Alex going back to his Gibsons and in particular Whitey the ES 355.
I think I recall Geddy saying due to royalties they’d be charged around 40,000 dollars to keep The Girl From Ipanema in the DVD. Despite this, they decided to keep it 👍

My favorite Alex La Villa rant is the Paris Hilton one...hits me just right

this very performance, sprung me into everything I know musically, as a guitarist.
Not too often you see Neil smiling behind the kit. I'm sure they are amused to no end wondering where Alex would be going next...
I'm not sure if you know this songs origin but it comes from a dream/nightmare Alex had many moons ago.
I feel the same about that one little piece of the song, as well. Always feels kinda hokey.
There's a channel here on UA-cam that removes the vocals on pretty much any Rush you want to hear as an instrumental
Looney Toons. I guess I am older and grew up on those cartoons so I love it!
I’ve put it off long enough. Good job Alex!
Good to see that they were having fun with it. It has been a staple for them for so many decades.
Alex has a different rant each time they play that song on this tour there are other rants on youtube.
He’s not wrong about jazz. Lol. It’s like organized chaos and it can be hard to listen to if you can’t get the chaos. 😂
NO! YOU HAVE TO LIKE THAT PART OR ELSE!!! LOL! 😂
1 thank you so much for playing the album and its entirety. 2 thanks for being honest about yourself to the music instead of what people want to hear. 3 thanks for being a rush fan.

Lifeson is a goofball
This is the Alex show!
Good job Alex!
Love this!
This is definitely my favorite video of this song.
Never gets old 🔥🤘🏻
It was subtitled’an exercise in indulgence’. And you mentioned that goofy humor. For me, it’s between this one and Exit Stage Left for La Villa.
Every one of these on this tour had Alex doing something in the middle. The time I saw them, he went on some weird diatribe about meat bees.
I think I like this version the best of all the ones I've seen, and Alex being his usual goofy self is a definite highlight. Looking forward to The Spirit Of Radio tomorrow!!

This is one of the best versions of this song! Such a great instrumental! The audience was singing too! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!

Oh boy, here we go! (Just beginning to watch.) This is a fun one - a GREAT version of the tune.
Love the 'Alex Rant' live performances of La Villa.
Geddy is just rockin that bass! Incredible!
I agree. This version is great.
The solo was amazing.
“I love singing. It’s so easy.” 😂
I saw them once in Mansfield, MA and Alex’s rant was about smoking tobacco and other stuff. Biggest crowd as a solo band but they played at the sarstock festival in Toronto with the Stones and ACDC in front of half a million people.
Song sits at #3 all time Rush tunes...don't feel there is a sub par live version out there...every one of them is fantastic!🤘
what songs are at 1&2?
