- Buke and Gass' homemade quality is what draws you in at first. Arone Dyer plays a modified baritone-ukulele run through effects that squeal with delight while bandmate Aron Sanchez runs his guitar-bass hybrid through two amps. Watch the duo play a joyfully pummeling set from the Tiny Desk.
Set List:
"Your Face Left Before You"
"Sleep Gets Your Ghost"
"Revel In Contempt"
"Medulla Oblongata"

At 71 years, I've seen and heard a lot of music - it seems some how these two have absorbed all all the best of it and created something incredibly creative and exciting. They are amazing.
Eight years ago, making you 79 now. You, commenter, are still amazing, and Buke and Gase are also still amazing.
How are you today my friend?
Amen brother!
I love their kooky sounds and how nice the transitions are.
Cool changes. Great singing. So unusual
Math folk?....
Any way, really great music, spectacular little concert.
All these years later, Buke and Gase just have that one of a kind spark of creativity paired with such thorough craftsmanship and freedom. It makes for an unforgettable experience and catalogue, I really hope they get together to record some more.
Subtly severe, intricately brutal, delicately riotous. The nigh-incomprehensible made unnervingly casual, musicality as fascinating as we are lucky to witness it, emanating from creatures crafted to amplify the firing of rare synapses rooted far too deep to unravel.
If the strange joy they provide has a name, all these years have kept it from me.
If I had been there when they played the grooves at the end of "Sleep Gets Your Ghost," I would have danced and laughed out loud. I can't believe the crowd's reaction was so subdued. I would have been beside myself with joy. I want to hug them both for that performance.
Well, shit. This is amazing. Time to buy a bunch of records.
9 years later and sleep still gets my ghost
Such a rich sound for only 2 people. Love it.
month after month, i always come back to this...
Michael Lena its perfect
Still? Report in please!
Most folk music doesn't rock. Most virtuosic music has no soul. Most avant-garde music isn't catchy. Most metal isn't funky. Most toe-taping music isn't creative. I better give back my musicology degree 'cause this couple just destroyed all the musical stereotypes I've built up.
Folks who love these guys, you might also dig We Vs. the Shark - similarities in sound, vibe, experimental freedom (without abandoning rhythm), and.. mathiness
Love them and these guys, maybe you will too 👍
Here 10 years later. Fire.
One of the best uses of unusual signatures in a song context I´ve ever seen.
I wish I could like this 200 million times
+Brian Kessler i want to die because this is too perfect
This is extremely underrated for how good it is
This is the best two part guitar writing I think I have ever heard perhaps! It creates a huge full sound with relatively simple parts. Mega awesome! Voice also works great. Amazing amount of sound for two people.
Progress in the academic world is measured in your ability to synthesize and generalize, which has its up and downsides. There are important exceptions to every rule, but there's also learning the rule. My original point remains - whether in music or any other field, it's hard to do just one thing well - B&G do a lot of things well at the same time.
00:04 Your Face Left Before You
04:15 Sleep Gets Your Ghost
09:15 Revel In Contempt
14:23 Medulla Oblongata
This maybe one of the most ingenious live sets on UA-cam!
so minimalistic and tight
it's buke and gase, not buke and gass
They had a mid-career name change.
WalrusWaltz oh is that why? i know i got had some of their songs I'd gotten off Amazon and i thought they'd misspelled it too. i take it they got tired of people calling them Buke and gas not Gass
agenerichuman The duo (almost half jokingly) named their band after the instruments that they made. Aron plays a guitar/bass which he calls a gase ( it was previously called a gass which people often mispronounced as gas). Arone plays a baritone ukulele or a "Buke".
i thought it was puke and gass.
I don't think they mind if you spell it either way.
This kick drum has strong TOOL vibes. Prying Open My Third EYE :)
It's comforting to know that music isn't stagnant. Fills me with a very special kind of joy.
WHAT IN THE MUSIC THEORY I JUST FELL IN LOVE
Delectable dissonance. They are sheer genius. Can't wait for a whole new generation of musicians inspired by B&G.
10 years later, slim pickings 😢
still my favourite concert on this channel!!
really unique and interesting and dynamically w/ progressive elements making B&G cooler than most duos makings sounds
I always get the sense in these videos that the performers are getting some kind of weird vibes from the office people off camera. You can especially tell when Bob Boilen or whoever pipes up and shouts something at them. I have the impression that he has a sort of imposing presence to him from various experiences I've seen.
frippertronics on the ukulele - lovely refreshing new sounds and gusto ! this (you guys) ROCKS !
Very Unique Sound.
I can’t believe it’s been 12 years, thank you NPR. Still my favorote
TRUTH
more than absolutely awesome!
I haven't tuned these guys in for a while. They are really talented, and unique.
If they played Tending The Talk here, I wouldn’t have survived.
I discovered them when I was college and this video was still fresh. Seeing it this many years later, still REALLY love their sound
The only music to compare this with...hmmm
King Crimson
Zappa
Scott Walker
It's a
short list,
I know
but this
🦄
is rare
...as is this.
🥩
they make me think of what animal collective might sound like if they went totally acoustic
I just laughed when I realized they sound like early RUSH!
+Brian Kehew Good point! ha!
Just waiting for them to go into Working Man...
I think you have become the soundtrack of my life :)
punkprogresssivfolk?!
I love this descriptor for their genre lol pretty accurate
Over and over and over and over.......She makes you wanna smile:) such a great band.
Hm, I've never considered any of that, very interesting. I'll keep that in mind as I watch these, it could change how I view some of these performances, thanks for the perspective.
still gnarly
This is fucking sick.
I compare these guys to someone like Jackson Pollock. They both push the bounds of their respective media and challenge their audience with their "art". But would I want it in my house? I can't say I that I would.
Sometimes experimental just means that you haven't found the answer yet...
you wasted your time getting a musicology degree in the first place. genre's are stupid, listen to the music and if you like it proceed if you dont then be on your way. however i agree that this band kicks ass!!
"Arone Dyer plays a modified baritone-ukulele run through effects that squeal with delight" right there.
By the way,

These are some things I can see.
DT and KC are a lot heavier to compare them to. But rejoice, I suspect Jethro Tull is a lot better example of mid heavy progressive art rock.
so raw and perfect
How do they make that slide sound at 12:43? I cant figure it out!
+Derek Curtis-Tilton It's a boss synthesizer pedal.. or a harmonist.. both by boss.. you can get similar effect with the harmonist, but the synthesizer pedal is the exact one they use.
good point I thought something was playing in the background but now that you mention it...or maybe it's both ...unless there's a dummer there
Eh, not bad. They have some badass potential. Just their melodies could be altered a little bit to be more catchy and balanced.
She's the happiest person in the world :)))
Octave pedals ftw
Now Buke and Gase should do a tiny desk concert
Awesome.
2:45 to the end of the first song is so damn good...
i hear a whammy pedal on the baritone uke, and some fancy envelope filter on the half bass thing.
WHY AREN'T YOU THE PRESIDENT!!!!!!! END. OF. TIME. MIND. COLLAPSED. BEST MUSIC
Is it just me or does Aron (gassist?) look a bit like Abed from Community?
Maybe some King Crimson influence?
because it's awesome, obviously. if you don't like it, don't watch.
Wow. A new gen of prog rock. Love it!
i'm so glad the majority of people arn't lame and like this
Medulla Oblongata is...perfect.
just ran into this group, thank you, instant fan.
Ya, it looks like he has some bass strings in there. . .
Even when she laughs it sounds like she’s singing.
I'm no expert, but it sounds like a whammy pedal.
In what way is the tiny desk environment hostile?
Hypnotic.
This is the meshuggah of ukulele based music.
wow. so much to say..but wow will suffice.
I don't know these guys, and when I first heard them i wasn't too crazy bout em. But now i I realize how original their sound is and kinda dig it...
Dear Charles, you evidently are not a big music listener because there is an entire genre of music (math rock DURRR) whose fundamental aspect is varying time signatures. How bout you study music for 10 more years, post of video of your shitty compisitions, and get on NPR. Then you can justifiably critique a band. They ARE on beat, but they have this thing that a lot bands have its called DYNAMICS, and RIFFS, which are sometimes played in between VERSES. Do you understand?
Big Yellow Taxi laugh at 14:11
Neurotic style
Sorry I would use the terms 'avant-garde' and 'experimental' interchangeably, so your distinction is lost on me. Any avant-garde/experimental genre follows some formula after the initial outburst of creativity (e.g. free jazz) Name one genre of experimental/avant-garde that is predominantly catchy! Cause I can name lots that aren't - again, free jazz, serialism, aleatory music, musique concrete, no wave, noise-rock, industrial music (not industrial-metal), EDM, various experimental metal & punk
how does this not have more dislikes?
So...
After 6 weeks of (nearly) obsessive listening to Riposte and General Dome,
Wow..! Rawness and depth at the same time.. fantastic mixture..
Wow, with a degree in musicology, why were were you so full of them in the first place? Anyways, nice to know they're gone: I don't believe such thoughts will ever do you any good.
You obviously missed the part where I said "most." And missed out on the vast majority of free jazz, serialism, musique concrete, noise-rock, and grindcore. Not a lot of catchy melodies in that avant-garde music, wonderful exceptions like Captain Beefheart excluded.
My weekday routine for the last 10 days...
Look after kids until my wife gets home. Make dinner with said wife. Feed, change and put to bed said kids. Do a bit of tidying. Get online and watch this video. Smile inanely at the end section of sleep gets your ghost. Bliss.
modified to the point that it isnt.
I FUCKING LOVE how they transition
Now known as Buke and Gase though
Something different for a change.
I loooove it !! please someone help me with tuning! it's not standart and i can't understand what kind of((
for example in 'your face left before you'
They are using custom instruments. And ukelele/guitar and a bass/guitar
Tiny Desk is a hostile environment, props to bands for surviving there, It actually produces good video though I think, the tension between the musicians and the harsh audience.
does anyone know the tuning of the buke? is that the same for those regular 6-string baritone ukuleles we can buy online?
That is true: setting up some sorts of artifical dicotomies will help you understand your way through things. Well, as I said before, it's good to know that something has managed to shake this rules. And I do share your excitement!
lol just listening to it I thought that there was a band, only to come back to my computer and realize that it was just 2 really good musicians! :D
Notice that I said 'most'? And actually, for me, no, I would never describe 'moonlight sonata' as having a lot of soul. That's fine if you would.
at the very end of the set, the girl did something the guy didn't like, i think she ended on the wrong chord... she also seems high the whole time... but the guy is too uptight, the show kicked ass
This is so fucked up and great
As you mentioned "soul" I'm guessing you put Moonlight Sonata in the "virtuosic" category where it doesn't belong. Irrelevant.
i am not enjoying this at ll.
fascinating etno-psychfolk
King Crimson
It used to be Gass, but people couldn't pronounce it right...so they changed it to Gase. People kept pronouncing it as gas, like what you put in a car.
