  • Buke and Gass' homemade quality is what draws you in at first. Arone Dyer plays a modified baritone-ukulele run through effects that squeal with delight while bandmate Aron Sanchez runs his guitar-bass hybrid through two amps. Watch the duo play a joyfully pummeling set from the Tiny Desk.
    Set List:
    "Your Face Left Before You"
    "Sleep Gets Your Ghost"
    "Revel In Contempt"
    "Medulla Oblongata"

At 71 years, I've seen and heard a lot of music - it seems some how these two have absorbed all all the best of it and created something incredibly creative and exciting. They are amazing.

All these years later, Buke and Gase just have that one of a kind spark of creativity paired with such thorough craftsmanship and freedom. It makes for an unforgettable experience and catalogue, I really hope they get together to record some more.

Subtly severe, intricately brutal, delicately riotous. The nigh-incomprehensible made unnervingly casual, musicality as fascinating as we are lucky to witness it, emanating from creatures crafted to amplify the firing of rare synapses rooted far too deep to unravel.
If the strange joy they provide has a name, all these years have kept it from me.

If I had been there when they played the grooves at the end of "Sleep Gets Your Ghost," I would have danced and laughed out loud. I can't believe the crowd's reaction was so subdued. I would have been beside myself with joy. I want to hug them both for that performance.

Most folk music doesn't rock. Most virtuosic music has no soul. Most avant-garde music isn't catchy. Most metal isn't funky. Most toe-taping music isn't creative. I better give back my musicology degree 'cause this couple just destroyed all the musical stereotypes I've built up.

Progress in the academic world is measured in your ability to synthesize and generalize, which has its up and downsides. There are important exceptions to every rule, but there's also learning the rule. My original point remains - whether in music or any other field, it's hard to do just one thing well - B&G do a lot of things well at the same time.

I always get the sense in these videos that the performers are getting some kind of weird vibes from the office people off camera. You can especially tell when Bob Boilen or whoever pipes up and shouts something at them. I have the impression that he has a sort of imposing presence to him from various experiences I've seen.

Dear Charles, you evidently are not a big music listener because there is an entire genre of music (math rock DURRR) whose fundamental aspect is varying time signatures. How bout you study music for 10 more years, post of video of your shitty compisitions, and get on NPR. Then you can justifiably critique a band. They ARE on beat, but they have this thing that a lot bands have its called DYNAMICS, and RIFFS, which are sometimes played in between VERSES. Do you understand?

Sorry I would use the terms 'avant-garde' and 'experimental' interchangeably, so your distinction is lost on me. Any avant-garde/experimental genre follows some formula after the initial outburst of creativity (e.g. free jazz) Name one genre of experimental/avant-garde that is predominantly catchy! Cause I can name lots that aren't - again, free jazz, serialism, aleatory music, musique concrete, no wave, noise-rock, industrial music (not industrial-metal), EDM, various experimental metal & punk
