7 years ago you made this video, just found it for the first time, love the simplicity of this. it is always the easiest things to make are the hardest to work out. will remember this for a long time. thanks for shearing now all i have to do is see what you've been up too for the last 7 years :-)

I misplaced my commercial doweling jig, and I watched a bunch of do-it-yourself jig videos. This is the first one I've found that I can build without buying stuff (including tools I don't have) that would cost more than just replacing the commercial jig.
The "A ≠ B" trick is ingenious. Building the jig so that imperfections cancel makes it practical as a shop built jig; precision is no longer absolutely necessary.

Excellent concept & execution! Although the distance from the protruding dowel at the top is the same to the first & second holes respectively, since those holes do not exactly line up, the pattern needs to be reversed for them to line up! That's the reason for having to alternate sides A & B when drilling. Simply Brilliant!.........Steve

I did not understand the comment and I did not understand it, but I repeated my video many times and understood that A and B are different. Even if you drill a hole in the center exactly, there will be an error and there will be a problem in correct connection.
But your method has seen that the center errors are linked together rather optimally.
I admire the simple yet superb way.

If you use 3/8 inch drill bits like I do, you can get the following metal housing from Lowe's: Hillman Group Seamless Steel Spacers. Item #137132, Model #880417. Measurements: 3/8 x 1/2 by 1 inch. They work really great and are exactly what you are looking for.

    •  5 років тому +1

I have made the jig but after inserting the dowels the two pieces do not line up. Is it perhaps because the holes in the jig are not perpendicular or parallel?

    •  4 роки тому

Have you drilled the holes from different sides of the jig? This is important

    • @Tfootable

  • @matthewleestudio9327
    @matthewleestudio9327 9 років тому

Stephan, Isn't it critical that the holes in the jig be absolutely vertical? Otherwise there could be a shift in the location of the dowel hole. So, without a drill press, how can I get a very straight hole? The only thing that comes to mind is running the drill bit along a small square piece of wood.... any other tips?

    •  9 років тому +1

Matthew Lee You can make the holes with s router. But I think it is not necessary to have absolute vertical holes, a freehand hole is good enough.

I know hat you made this video a while back but I wanted to subscribe to your channel after I saw your clamping table video but missed it some how. What a great idea. All of your ideas are excellent, right up there with Matthias Wandel. I have bought several of his woodworking plans and would buy yours if you had any.
I also subscribed because of your mischievous cat. It thinks it's so clever knocking things off the workbench and then checking to see if you noticed it. Of course you did, you have the camera on it. BTW, is it a he or she?

Very clever. Like my volleyball coach used to say, "smarter, not harder".
I am a painter/artist. I could use this technique to make strainer frames for stretching canvas. I wonder if there is a simple way to make the strainer bars- some call them stretcher bars, but I fix the corners, so they are really strainer bars. I've glued a piece of quarter round to the flat edge of a 1 x 3 inch wood board, but this is time consuming. Anyhow, I like the corner jig, thanks! Matthew matthewleestudio.com
