it's been nearly two weeks since I've seen "aftersun" in a local film festival (filmekimi) and there's not been a single day that I didn't think about it. it's definitely one of the films of my life.

I've never cried at a film like this. Starting at the last shot, I cried and sobbed for half an hour

Yes, got me too. Tried to distance myself, fortunately I had somebody to share it with, so did not take that long.

I went into this film expecting it to be about my relationship with my daughter but it was about the relationship with my dad. Indescribably tender, elegaic and just . . devastating. Few pieces of art will ever have captured this much love or grief.

I watch most of the Oscar films every year going back to 1992, I believe Paul Mescal deserves a nomination. Oddly, I felt I was on vacation with him and his daughter, it was so real, and didn't follow the "Hollywood" formula. A must see if you love Oscar films.

Fairly certain this is not a Hollywood movie, so not sure why it would follow a hollywood formula.

While the ending is hauntingly sad for sure, I started crying way before that. It was the little things that got to me. Like the parasailers reflected in some kind of water (puddle? glass of water? I don't remember) underneath (foreshadowing what was about to come, in my eyes, anyway) or the time Calum crossed a street, not even minding the bus rushing past him a second later. What really got to me was that scene where he was in the bathroom brushing his teeth while Sophie talked to him from inside the bedroom, and something she said got to him and then he spit at the mirror. I started wailing uncontrollably hahaha. So much HATRED for himself portrayed in such a simple way. It gave me goosebumps. I would lie if I said that I didn't cry 3/4 of the film. It's a masterpiece and I applaud everyone who worked on it. When it ended, I knew that it would become my favourite film of all time, period.

I think great films find you at the right time in your life. Some may find Aftersun boring or depressing, and others will find it powerful and meaningful. As a father to a daughter - this film hit me hard, and while it may be a cliche to say this, Aftersun is a masterpiece - the craft alone deserves praise.

I will take that apology charlotte wells! Bc that ending had me silently weeping. I made a mistake and brought my dad to the film too thinking it would be a nice bonding experience. But no, he called the movie strange and asked “why was the guy crying like a banshee? What for?”🤦‍♀️ at least I felt understood by the film and that will sadly have to be enough

...my dad would fall asleep and snoar loudly when we watched movies. Even at cinema :/
Except Toy story, for some reason.
When the latest movie came I asked him if he wanted to go see it with me for old times sake. He had forgot that we even saw it and wasnt too thrilled :/

So I will say that I haven’t been able to cry a lot in the past few years for whatever reason it felt like as a kid I could cry easier and whenever I wanted, but man this movie hit me to my core like a train. I’m even tearing up just thinking about the film and the performances. An absolutely powerful, beautiful film and definitely one of my favorites of all time.

Something I'll never forgive myself for was being in a Film Festival, my short was official selection, and they had a "hangout spot" for all filmmakers, honestly there was a lot of directors I looked up to, but I felt very out of place, so I decided to sit on the only table that didn't have a lot of people, but two women. I asked if I could sit, they answered "of course", I didn't think anything of it. At that point Aftersun wasn't a huge deal and I couldn't watch it in that festival but about four months after, and that is probably still my favorite movie that year (along with Close), of course, then I realized, it was Charlotte Wells and Joi McMillon (editor of Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk). I did have the pleasure on talking briefly with Barry Jenkins, so small win for me lol.

I would not have enjoyed this film if I were watching it with anyone, especially parents. My dad's very emotional, it's my mom who is hard. But I know they would not have understood or enjoyed this movie. Please watch it alone and don't expect anyone to appreciate it like you do. This movie cuts deep and your friends/family criticizing it would cut deeper.
