can't wait for well's next films, aftersun was an incredibly abstract and emotionally devastating film and the way the scenes fluidly develop and weave in to the other, coming together to form this beautifully impressionistic masterpiece with no real loosely defined beginning, end or climax was masterful. scenes in aftersun don't really develop or change, they just kind of keep going on and on until it reaches a certain point, where these emotions just kind of hit you with a brick wall and you're left with no choice but to cry.

I watched this movie two nights ago on a flight from Singapore to Tokyo - not knowing anything about it - and was hoping people around me wouldn't notice my SOBBING. What an incredibly sensitive, melancholic, beautiful, tormented piece of art. I just dropped off my daughter (Charlotte!) at college a month ago, have been separated from her mother for 8+ years and this movie unearthed so many feelings of nostalgia, regret, sense of loss, love for my kids and hopes for the future, it's truly remarkable. Apart from witnessing what is happening between Sophie and her dad, I also loved the insights into Sophie's experience coming of age and trying to find her place among the older kids at the resort. Insightful, atmospheric, subtle, tender, visceral, moving, sad, real, ineffable. An absolutely unique and wonderful movie. Thank you Charlotte.

I know that its incredibly rare for a first time director to be nominated for an academy award, but I think that Charlotte Wells was so much more deserving than some of the other nominees. It's wonderful that Paul Mescal has been recognised, but really this film is so beautifully and carefully considered that I am surprised it hasn't been nominated in more categories. It's been a long time since a movie has taken up so much of brain, for months after I first saw it. The thoughtfulness and care with which she made this film truly took my breath away.

As someone who really admires Akerman, the first thought that came to mind was that she actually reminds me of her: haircut, eyes, her way of looking into the camera at times. So beautiful and full of tenderness. As soon as I watched the last scene of Aftersun, I also immediately had a feeling it had to have been inspired by La Chambre. Hotel Monterey with the hotel scenes too. Love how it's all coming full circle in my brain. Rooting for you, Charlotte

oh yes, those brief encounter lines are DEVASTATING. and dang, does charlotte wells know devastating, with her sincerely beautiful AFTERSUN. it just lingers with you; I love how she documents memory in ways I haven't seen before. aftersun felt like an evolution of cinematic language and what it's capable of communicating, so I'm very excited to see what wells does next. also, loved her tidbit about being in the same sundance writing labs class as bing liu -- they both capture the complexity of memory and parental relationships with such incredible nuance and authenticity! glad they had the chance to learn and work together. thanks for having her, criterion!
