This is one of the theories that I find plausible. Fuel is heavy, though. Maybe someone with specific knowledge can comment on what kind of flight time can be expected with an internal combustion engine.
You don't need a gas powered drone: just a wing. Amazing that no one knows about winged drones. They are much faster and fly for much longer and aren't expensive.
It’s an FPV drone. You can get it commercially from example iflight. You may believe FPV drones only can go for about 3-5 minutes, but if it’s like a 10” (inch) or bigger you can apply a HUGE battery like 20k mah which makes it available to fly for incredibly long. Those FPV drones can also go at immense speeds.
Let's clarify this incorrect statement from the drone "expert" in this video. 100mph drone speed was estimated. It is EASY to make a fast drone. It is EASY to add an extra battery. It is EASY to add communication mini boards. And people who build drones from scratch know that it is also EASY to build such a drone CHEAPLY. I never built for speed, but anyone can build a high quality drone from scratch for 1/10th the price of commercialized drones.
I got chased by a police heli during an event. I was 10km away in a crowd. I managed to outrun the heli, land and hide it seconds before the heli arrived on top of us. I was then just someone in the crowd. Fun times.
I think the flaw in the debate is assuming it was a battery powered drone. I can think of ways a nitro or other fueled single engine could power a quad rotor drone. There are ways to cool/shield exhaust output, especially at 100mph. Honestly the oddest part to me is not the drone but the lack of any pictures of it.
If I’m correct, the drone showcases there was an DJI inspire 1, x2 battery 40min flight time, and can be hot swaped, prob it was a dude trying to do cinematic with the police.
Sounds really more like a FPV RC plane...some of them can get some ultra long range and some have really decent batteries that can last for quite a bit of time
Distance isn't an issue if you're connected via cellular. Speed isn't an issue, it just depends on power available. But endurance means the drone has to be larger than most battery powered ones.
The only thing I could think of, is maybe someone has finally built a diamond battery that can run for a very long time at crazy speeds. Definitely someone with big money.

I wonder if it was a plane with something like DJI/Walksnail camera and transmitter. Planes can fly further for longer, but running 100 mph for over an hour would still be in the realm of difficult.
Why is everyone seeming to assume it was a quadcopter? A fixed wing drone could maintain that speed for far longer periods than most "copter" style ones.
I live in the Tucson Valley the area it covered is vast, from where it began to Mt. Lemon on over towards Avra Valley is ridiculously far, and it climbed to altitudes of 14,000 feet?
@@CaliRob281 The claim was that it was a “Highly modified” quad copter type of configuration from what the pilots could assess but was about four feet across, so it was a larger unit. I don’t know if I believe the quad copter account.
As a fpv drone hobbyist, this sounds pretty impressive. 100mph is easy to achieve, 1 hour is also easy to achieve and range is not an issue with elrs, but constant high speed and an hour of flight time is very hard to achieve, unless it is as they said, a hybrid system, but I've never seen such thing before. There was a drone that ran on 4 nitro engines in the past but it ran poorly as you obviously couldn't use any pid controllers on the output power of the motors. It is possible that it could've been a fixed wing, it's a shame that they show no footage or anything to analyse. They also never mention the size. If it'd a larger type of drone, like the military drone then it can be possible but I'm not experienced in those types of drones
My thoughts: What the hell was a police helicopter doing flying chaotically over a densely populated urban area, chasing an object that nobody onboard could see, and that could potentially down the helicopter by getting caught up in the rotor blades? This sounds like a complete lapse of sanity by the police. That department should have been grounded indefinitely, pending the outcome of an independent investigation into the helicopter pilot(s) and dispatchers.
Licensed drone operator here. If it was going 100mph, it was a DIY built drone with no tracking system or RFID number. If people around there know him, he'll get cought and have one big arse fine from the FAA. Dudes like him give us drone operators such a bad rap. Pisses me off.
People are assuming this is an inefficient quadcopter, how could it fly for 30 minutes, but it could have been an efficient RC plane that could fly for hours. They are also assuming it was a large vehicle, but could only see a green light. This could be a very small vehicle...
I work in the film industry. We use professional grade drones, and many are custom built. Don't listen to any "drone expert" about what is not possible. Because I've seen many times that almost anything is possible.
I am a fpv pilot, the flight time definitely says this drone is military. I have seen the Red Bull drone and what it took to make a fpv drone move at 200 mph. Battery consumption at those speeds speeds like you mentioned is only about 5 to 6 minutes. Definitely government involved. Especially since they're still testing swarm technology now imagine 100 of those dropped from a plane
You can have 2 (or more) controllers with people in different locations who take over control to cover a longer distance. I also wouldn't be surprised if the pilot was on top of that mountain because you can get massive range up there with little to no interference.

Army flys UAVs a hour and a half away from Tucson. I don’t know if there’s any connection.
The drone is powered by element 115
Someone brought their drone back from Ukraine.
I live in Corona, the reporting leaves many more questions than answers.
@@CaliRob281 The claim was that it was a “Highly modified” quad copter type of configuration from what the pilots could assess but was about four feet across, so it was a larger unit. I don’t know if I believe the quad copter account.
@@PauloBerni699 cant be a quad.
Per faa rules (cfr 14 part 107) maximum legal speed of a drone is 87kts (100mph) ground speed.
The most obvious answer is that the drone doesn’t exist.
BOT!
If it was fixed wing that's actually both easy and cheap to achieve....
My thoughts: What the hell was a police helicopter doing flying chaotically over a densely populated urban area, chasing an object that nobody onboard could see, and that could potentially down the helicopter by getting caught up in the rotor blades?
This sounds like a complete lapse of sanity by the police. That department should have been grounded indefinitely, pending the outcome of an independent investigation into the helicopter pilot(s) and dispatchers.
see how its ok for Them but not us?
Licensed drone operator here. If it was going 100mph, it was a DIY built drone with no tracking system or RFID number. If people around there know him, he'll get cought and have one big arse fine from the FAA. Dudes like him give us drone operators such a bad rap. Pisses me off.
Sounds like a UFO, not a drone.
Looks like the governor of Arizona is going to have to bring out a guy in an alien suit…..again. 👽
(Phoenix Lights 1997)
Those are aliens flying their homemade drones
Wouldn't be a multirotor drone. Couldn't fly that fast for that amount of time. But definitely could have been an RC airplane.
Whatever happened to reports of a person flying over San Francisco Bay 2-3 years ago?
They weren't chasing anything. They just needed an excuse to take the helicopter for a joy ride.
Absolutely no way someone was flying a drone at 100mph for over an hour.
I lived in tucson when this happened, crazy story!
I bet the pilot is laughing his ass off somewhere 😂
i know i would be!
Thank you for the very thought provoking story...
Are we talking quadcopter drone or jet drone?
Its a 13 year old who got sent to her grandparents retirement home for punishment.
There are drones that do over 200mph nowadays. Now some that will do over 300mph. They haven't even seen fast yet.
Why do I have a feeling they were chasing their own tail.
looks like it with those stupid spirals
You can have 2 (or more) controllers with people in different locations who take over control to cover a longer distance. I also wouldn't be surprised if the pilot was on top of that mountain because you can get massive range up there with little to no interference.
with what system?
I'm not saying it was aliens.... but it was aliens! 👽
They couldn't see it on RADAR; I'm pretty sure that's what they meant. I used to be stationed at DMAFB, as a Air Traffic Control RADAR Specialist
How do you maintain visual on a drone that's 5 miles away?
You don't, because you don't need to
hahaha F VLOS. i told the aviation authority the same thing. cant do anything to me. its fKN funny as
Those speeds for that duration says jet engine powered.
Another news report said that the police report said that it didn't show up on infrared either.
I think I'll build a 300 mph drone.
The army base at sierra vista is one of the places the army's drone develop, emt amd research is based. it is east and south of the area it was seen.
it is a long range fpv drone
