Even among the people who praise this film, I think the Captain is a shockingly underrated character. With his character arc, he essentially becomes a stand-in for the whole of humanity. In a way, he begins as a casual villain. He upholds the status quo not because of malicious intent or greed or even lust for power - his only motivation is comfort. He wants things to stay the way they have always been because change requires effort, and that's something these humans have learned to shirk at all costs. When he is first presented with the prospect of returning to Earth, he is excited yet apprehensive - and then, overjoyed to find that it was (seemingly) a false alarm, because he chooses no news even over good news. What ultimately triggers him is one of humankind's most distinctive features - curiosity. And it's at that moment, when he's learning about Earth, that he begins to use his technology responsively, rather than being used BY it. He uses it to further his knowledge and understanding, and it's that which fully convinces him that returning to Earth is both desirable and urgently necessary. The Captain grows naturally towards responsibility like a child learning to walk for the first time. Literally in his case. He becomes heroic once he's fully grasped the situation - realising how stunted humanity has become, how dependent on distraction, willingly enslaved by their own machines. Not just his ship, the entirety of humanity has been on Autopilot. AUTO stands for humanity's complete disinterest in agency for 700 years. Long before the Captain physically gets on his feet, I think the moment he becomes a hero is when he pulls down his cap and says "I am the Captain of the Axiom. We are going home today."
I think how it also works is how the robots seemingly develop more personalities whilst the humans do absolutely nothing and lose alot off personality. So in a way robots become like humans and humans more like robots.

Nah it doesn't need one, you can enjoy a story and characters and want it expanded on but there's basically no justification for being there like toy story 4 and the newly confirmed toy 5 which undoes the previous ending/message to even justify its existence, the story wraps itself up perfectly fine and nothing I can think of thay would work storywise as a feature length film, sometimes it's just better leaving things as is
Lets not forget the beauty of the credits, where it shows that humanity could go on to save Earth and make it a beautiful place again through a slide show with different periods of art and different cultures at the same time that shows the blossoming of WALL-E's and EVE's love
TRUUUE Wall-e has the best credits scene. I normally always stay for credits until the "boring" ones show up but yeah Wall-E's credits are the best by far because it satiates the curiosity I have for "the ending", but it doesn't negate the thoughts and ideas you get from watching the film since it's a precautionary tale. As a kid, I hated when movies didn't have good enough endings for me like... the couple kisses and that is it?? What about AFTER. and then the sequel cuts to the couple fighting like... dude I want to SEE THEIR FIRST DATE. But after a while of being a musical theater and general arts and culture nerd, I realized why endings are like that... Then I learned the beauty of it... idk if it was today or if it was a while ago, but it was recent-ish. A good story, leaves you curious. leaves you thinking. Whether it's about the future of the couple or the future of the planet. You are left wondering about the future and what you can do next about it. It leaves you with something to sit on. And I think that's proper media consumption.
The part that Wall E was rebooting really made me cry, imagine the personality that took him years to be sentient is now gone, there's no emotion on his new faceplat and the fact that Eve used everything that wall E had thought her adding to the sadness, she almost lost the chance to acknowledge Wall E feelings to her vice versa.
When a film whose main protagonists communicate with the same vocabulary range of a Pokemon, but will absolutely leave you in tears, then it *IS* 100% a masterpiece.
This is NOT like Adam and Eve, it’s more like Noah’s Ark. EVE is the dove, the trash is the sinfulness that needed to be washed away, the sapling is the olive branch, and the Axeom is the ark.
Then what does Wall-E and what does auto represent. There wasn't something stopping the ark from returning once the flood ended. I don't think this has anything to do with religion. It has more to do with asking what makes us human and can we lose what makes us human.
I cannot properly express my love for this film. I love robots. I love space. I like cute stories. I love character parallels.. Wall-E has all that. I’m a huge fan of stories with robots. I love how much you can do with the concept. Rogue AI, self-awareness, lack of or pressing presence of limits (robots can do soo much, but then again, they’re still fragile.) etc. THIS STORY HAS ALL THAT. Auto is, technically, rogue AI. Following a basic order in a violent matter. All the robots are self-aware. And every robot is presented as so wonderful and powerful, and DURABLE, (especially from Wall-E’s POV of the newer tech) but we get to see over and over how vulnerable they are and how easy it is for a robot to be shut down or broken. These concepts are so fun to play with, and Wall-E uses them really well. Robots are soooo cool i love this movie so much
And! Rogue AI is a super cool concept on it’s own. AI does not need to be human to be rogue. AI just means the bot can think for itself with.. well.. artificial intelligence. Auto is not human. He doesn’t act human, and has no personality. But he’s an AI in a very literal sense It’s “gone rogue” because it’s interpreting the instructions in a way that’s unintended and can cause harm. That’s all rogue AI really is. It’s taking what it knows and applying it in a way that’s dangerous. Auto is such a boiled down version of that idea and it makes him unique. But rogue AI can also be a story like Portal 2, where the main villain’s arc revolves more around human thoughts and emotions, and how dangerous unstable people are when in positions of power, and especially when they let it get to their head (Talking about wheatley!) And rogue AI can also be literally anything. And that’s why i love robot stories so much.
This was the golden age of Pixar, it seemed like every movie they made back then was a home run. The Toy Story movies, A Bug’s Life, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Up, etc. etc. Even with this amazing lineup of films, all of which I have so many fond memories of, Wall-E still manages to shine through and prove itself to be one of Pixar’s very best. The characters, themes, and animation in this film are as beautiful now as they were back then. The fact that so much is conveyed with so few words between Wall-E and Eve proves the universality of love in such a poignant way. The friendships that he forms with the human characters show the common sentience that lies within both man and A.I, and how the two aren’t as different as we think, and this is a film from 2008! A.I wasn’t even on most people’s radar back then, so Wall-E was way ahead of it’s time in that sense. Just a masterpiece of a movie, and will always be one of my favorites.
You know, I just finished playing through NieR: Automata for the first time, and just like the start of WALL-E, the setting is an Earth that has long been abandoned by humanity. Cities that are empty shells of their former selves and reclaimed by nature, all sorts of remnants of the culture that was in place when intelligent biological organisms were running the show, all now serving as the backdrop for interactions between artificial creations, a silent dread that is always present and tells its sorrowful tale through nothing but its mere existence. It's a fascinating setting to work with.
This movie, in particular, holds a special place in my heart because it was the last movie i got to see in theaters with my grandma For that reason, on too of how utterly fucking beautiful this movie is, brilliantly written and whatnot, it’s my favorite Pixar film of all time

People are always talking about the philosophical/religious etc. undercurrents of films, but can we take a minute just to appreciate how good of a romantic film this is? And, yes, I do consider this to be mainly a romantic film and not really a sci-fi film with a moral tale. The *vast* majority of romantic stories (animated, or otherwise) are done in such a cringy way that, frankly, I'm amazed there are so many who watch them. The characters are usually overexaggerated and over-acted and it really detracts from the actual romance. I think this is one of the only romantic films that doesn't do that, whilst still delivering a compelling romantic plot.
Wall-E has always been my favorite Pixar movie. It's a spectacular film, but the one issue i have with it is why Eve got sent to the trash-filled earth in the first place. If Auto was set on the idea of never returning to earth, why send a robot to check if the planet was habitable again? It's not like the Captain did it, he was barely even the "Captain" of the ship at the time. The entire movie would have simply not happened if Auto was truly ded set on never returning to earth or even bothering to check if it was habitable
I reckon it’s just part of his programming. Auto’s instructions are to check if earth is habitable, and to keep the people on the ship safe until that time comes. He doesn’t “want” to never return to earth, he’s simply made the judgment, based on centuries of data, that earth is unsalvageable. Eve was sent to earth because Auto is still carrying out his orders, but he refuses to allow them to return because he has his second order (to keep the ship’s passengers safe) and he doesn’t think a single plant outweighs the centuries of data showing that earth is most likely unsalvageable.
I see 2 explanations 1. Auto doesn't really show he is omniscient or else why would he even let eve get up to the captain just to show it was empty. Also maybe turning off the probe sending would require the captain to do it so it's just easier to throw away the plant right before it gets to the captain rather than explaining why it needs to be stopped. 2. Maybe it's because auto isn't evil, he isn't hurting the humans and kind of has conflicting orders because the humans left it unchecked. Maybe he still needs to follow his original orders to send out probes and also needs to keep the humans on the ship. buuuuuut technically his directive didn't say anything about throwing the plant away right before the captain takes a look.

I, too, loved how the film was able to tell a story with as little dialogue as possible! I think so many production (especially the Disney remakes) forget to implement two things with their projects these days: -Show, don't tell. -Less is more. ....that's just my opinion, though 😅 I look forward to your future uploads!

Typical film would have captain be the villain where he wouldn't want to go back as he "likes his position and way of life" or smth and then wall-e and eve would fight him and make a plan how to get back and then everyone would celebrate their success. Fortunately, unlike others, wall-e did not do that
Even auto isn't really a bad guy. he's not hurting the humans but the unchecked AI by the humans has caused the ai to do a sort of "humans cause problems for humans therefore eliminate the choice for humans" sort of logic.
Can we talk about how the Wall-E robots were supposed to be cleaning up the planet, but all of their "cleaning" basically boils down to compressing trash into cubes and then stacking it? Really puts an emphasis on how unsustainable our current way of throwing away trash is. Even on the Axiom they just seem to dump the trash out into space instead of finding a better way to dispose of it or recycle it.

My theory is that Auto isn't being single minded. In fact, I think the opposite. I think he's all too aware that if the humans go back, he not only becomes obsolete, he will not be "king" anymore. After all, unlike all the other bots, Auto is bound to the ship. If he really was single minded, he would have given into the captain's orders.
The way I see it, he's just doing what he's been told to do. His directive overrides all; even the captain's orders. In order to maintain said directive, Auto did whatever was necessary.
The perfect film? No! This movie just portrays humans as pure idiots without exception. Yes, it seems that it's the majority that come off that way but only because the stupid ones tend to stick out more. No one is willing to live in that kind of hellscape to let it get to that way over the entire globe. And if they had to get to a ship ya know that some on that ship are going to decide to not ride the floating lazy boy and decide to walk. They are going to steer free of sugar and get healthy. It's a monocultural prejudice.
I think you completely missed the point of how the humans are portrayed. They're portrayed as "idiots" because that's how they were raised aboard the Axiom. It's a dystopian portrayal, meant to show how consumerism has caused their humanity to slowly slip away over the centuries, even to the point where even robots feel more human. Let's not forget that humanity has been aboard this ship for 700 years. The Axiom and BnL are all they've ever known. Their lifestyles are all centered around BnL, to the point where their main "directive" is to simply be consumers, above all else. Given this, it makes perfect sense how they're portrayed in this film.

I like Ratatouille more, but both are great films in their own genres and should be considered masterpieces.

I saw this movie in cinemas and haven't been the same since it left that much of a impact on me
I love WALL-E. It’s one of my favorite movies. I wish it had a sequel. I think it would be wonderful.

The way I see it, he's just doing what he's been told to do. His directive overrides all; even the captain's orders. In order to maintain said directive, Auto did whatever was necessary.

The perfect film? No! This movie just portrays humans as pure idiots without exception. Yes, it seems that it's the majority that come off that way but only because the stupid ones tend to stick out more. No one is willing to live in that kind of hellscape to let it get to that way over the entire globe. And if they had to get to a ship ya know that some on that ship are going to decide to not ride the floating lazy boy and decide to walk. They are going to steer free of sugar and get healthy. It's a monocultural prejudice.
I think you completely missed the point of how the humans are portrayed. They're portrayed as "idiots" because that's how they were raised aboard the Axiom. It's a dystopian portrayal, meant to show how consumerism has caused their humanity to slowly slip away over the centuries, even to the point where even robots feel more human. Let's not forget that humanity has been aboard this ship for 700 years. The Axiom and BnL are all they've ever known. Their lifestyles are all centered around BnL, to the point where their main "directive" is to simply be consumers, above all else. Given this, it makes perfect sense how they're portrayed in this film.
