    I think it’s smart to keep the “Ghost Of” title. That way Sucker Punch can tell an anthology of stories! I just hope there is a reference to Jin. Perhaps a Legends mission?

    My theory is that Atsu is on a path of revenge but along the way she discovers that she is a descendent of Jin Sakai, the legendary Ghost figure who by now is probably just a myth.
    So she uses the styles and teachings of her ancestor to help her complete her quest.
    I hope we get to explore the entire prefecture of Hokkaidō. That would make the map 100x bigger than Tsushima. Probably not, but hey, a man can dream 💭

    • @sentinel011
      @sentinel011 2 години тому

      My guess is similar to yours, but also different. Instead of being a descendent of Jin Sakai, she comes from a secret Shinobi clan inspired by The Ghost's tactics. Atsu might be from a family from that very Shinobi clan. I reckon that her family got discarded by one of the Shogun factions as they want to rule by gaining positive public sentiments, instead of heinous methods to take down their opposing factions. The only surviving member of her family, she hunts down the ronins hired to dispose of her family. A bit similar to Lady Masako's story, except that it's the Feudal lord that owned and managed her clan that wiped her family.
      It is possible that her journey of vengeance will be stopped eventually, and basically you play as the villain.

    Mt Youtei, which is referred to as the "female mountain" by the indigenous Ainu people, was seen as a sacred place in which feminity would flourish.
    Keeping that in mind, SuckerPunch might have put a lot more thought behind the decision of a woman protagonist than one would assume.

      @@dawudabdulali3827 Can't say I blame them when it's proven to be the case with most other western AAA games in recent years. Whether or not it applies to this game remains to be seen, but look around at Sony's other IP's lately. With a small handful of exceptions, they've all fallen victim to DEI mandates in one form or another, and the PlayStation brand has been incredibly disrespectful to Japan ever since the Californianisation of the company. You'd have to be ignorant not to acknowledge that simple fact. The concern that SuckerPunch's next game could fall victim to those same trappings isn't unfounded in today's day and age.
      Still, SuckerPunch so far has a better track record than most of respecting the settings they portray. They were dubbed official ambassadors for the island of Tsushima due to that fact, and even garnered praise from Japanese developers like Toshihiro Nagoshi (Super Monkey Ball, F-Zero GX and Like a Dragon). Provided Sony doesn't meddle with the game's development, or no undesirables rise to power within SuckerPunch (since development studios change staff all the time), we should hopefully get something decent out of it.

    I suspect the shamisen she carries will have some significance to her identity.
    Since Sucker Punch are fans of Japanese film, perhaps this is following more in the 1970s exploitation era with films like Lady Snowblood. Perhaps the protagonist is disguised as a travelling musician on a quest for revenge of some sort. I don't think Sucker Punch is stupid enough to declare a woman as a (official and recognized) samurai. They will probably go deeper into the shinobi route with her.

    I'm very excited for Ghost of Yotei. As for the question how Atsu could have gotten her training or became a Samurai, maybe she was a member of the household of LadyTachibana Ginchiyo? She recruited females into her elite guard, and trained all the females in her house in warfare skills, and she and her guard partook in battles and were allied with Hideyoshi. If I am not mistaken, the Tachibana clan was deprived of their posessions after Sekigahara, so it would stand to reason, that a potential member of Ginchiyo's elite guard could become a Ronin.

    Atsu’s probably related to Jin through some way, I think the character is probably going to be hunting a Ronin who killed her husband, father, or brother during Sekigahara, as for the Ronin well, the one mentioned disappearing North so I think it’s likely that Hokkaido at least in this universe is going to be the place where a lot of Western Army men ran off to so they could disappear

    The manga, Azumi, had to go through great pains to explain the lead being a female swordsman. She was a war orphan, trained alongside a whole group of orphans by a samurai master in secret to eliminate the enemies of the newly established Tokugawa Shogunate. Really great series, but it gets pretty dark.
    The film is better if you want a slightly lighter take on the source material. Avoid the sequel, it sucks.

      Same. And literally cause we've already established this IP as at least having more realistic and grounded themes and setting (for the most part). A game where we are slaughtering ronin and Mongols brutally by the hundreds.
      Whamen. Literally why are we playing as a woman? Most men find it difficult to directly relate to women the same way we do a man. And when the target demographic your making a game for is men then you make a sequel we're all hyped for just to be shown we're playing as a woman... Yea disappointed sets in.
      No game is a hundred percent realistic, there's gotta be some arcady elements of you want fun in a game but this franchise set itself onto those foundations with the first. Simple as that

Yes women did have a Samurai title backcthen but their role as bushi or Warrior was not prominent and almost 1% of the whole samurai class. For them the title was of power and political influence within their house. There's a chance this character could be a bandit or a Rogue Ainu or maybe a daughter of a Samurai and just "As a Ghost" broke the societal norm of pre 1800s Japan and following the way of the Bushi, the way of the warrior for whatever personal vendetta she may have. It's too early to tell honestly. Let's wait and see how her story develops.

      @@Perceval777 that's far from the truth. Ainus have been struggling to maintain and profit from fishing rights that they historically possessed. They are often bared from selling the salmon they fish in rivers because its from protected fish stock. While its understandable for ecological purpose, Japan is famously hypocritical in using nonsens "traditional" claims to the whaling industry to justify its continued hunt of various whales. So banning Ainus for selling some fish is hypocritical. Another thing is that many conservative politicians still claim that "ainu decend from the okhotsk culture from Siberia, so they arent really Japanese" (they are between a third and half siberian, but mostly Emishi genetically iirc), to justify treating them as newcomers, with less respect. Its not that easy.

Even the LDP politicians openly discriminate against the Ainu on Twitter.
      I would hardly call this an "improvement" but a government sham to avoid facing their colonizer past for sure. They even changed schools' history books to make it look like stolen Ainu land was returned. It's insane the lengths they went to avoid facing consequences...

    When I learned this game was going to be set in the Sengoku/Edo Period, I was rather bummed because almost every work of media with a historical Japanese setting is set in one of those two periods. But, having the location in Hokkaido is at least interesting enough to make me want to keep my eye on this game to see where it goes. And while I too am nervous about how they're going to handle a female lead, the trailer didn't seem to be trying to constantly point to her being a "strong female lead," it felt more subdued so I'm going to maintain a cautious optimism. We'll see though.

  • @pangurban1273
    @pangurban1273 2 дні тому +3

    Some interesting random facts I’ve come across trying to deep dive Hokkaido history that might be useful;
    •The Shamisen/Samisen found its way to Japan through port Sakai (😏😏😏) near Osaka (also the location of the final battle to cement the Tokugawa Shogunate’s position, though granted, that WAS several years after the current year of Ghost of Yotei)
    •The Ainu did NOT have a written language, their history was kept through spoken word. So Atsu carrying a sash/banner with Japanese calligraphy written on it (what does iT SAYYYYYYY 😫😫😫) could attest that she’s a “southerner” and not actually FROM Yotei
    •Wolves in Japan are now extinct, though that event wasn’t for another few hundred years. STILL- there could nonetheless be important similarities between the history of the wolves and the main character to kind of portray metaphorical/spiritual similiarities. In Ezo, the Ainu people viewed EVERY aspect of nature/animals as a type of god/deity (actual word- “kamuy”) of the land. Wolves were as cherished as domestic dogs, and hunters would often view wild wolves as “hunting” partners and would share kills with them. Far later, when wolves were labeled as pests, they were systematically wiped out through poisoning campaigns (👀) and bounties were awarded for each wolf killed by a hunter. [Personal theory that how Sakai’s “animal guide” was foxes- I think Atsu’s “animal guide” will instead be wolves. And kind of like how Deer were venerated on Tsushima and that it’s “bad luck” to kill them- it’s “bad luck” to kill a wolf in early Edo period because they prey on pest animals that damage crops)
    •The current “ronin” inhabiting Ezo COULD very well be the old “samurai” who had been chased out of their positions and homes by the new Shogunate. So my theory is that perhaps the old Shogunate’s forces might be trying to conquer Hokkaido and establish territory BEFORE the new Shogunate sends his forces to occupy it.
    •Yellow is a “bright, optimistic, youthful” color in Japanese symbolism- which is an interesting take given what we know about the Ghost. Also the usage of it in the trailer is suspiciously insistent- between Atsu’s clothing, the yellow leaves on the trees, the yellow gingko leaf in the logo, and the wolves’ yellow eyes and teeth.
    •Kurosawa (the director behind the black and white mode) had a film called “The Seven Samurai”. Look it up- it’s the inspiration behind ANY “get the team together to go f*ck sh!t up” trope that’s in too many games/movies for me to name (and coincidentally ALSO Ghost of Tsushima). NOW- in THIS particular film- a village requests the aid of a samurai to help defend them against bandits who keep returning to steal their harvest. The Village’s Chief has a daughter (Shino)- one who the Chief decided to raise/disguise as a boy for her own protection. She falls in love with one of the samurai.
    [SO- MY theory- the game’s cover art- Atsu kneeling on a cliff with six swords stabbed into the ground around her, paired with what Sucker Punch said about Atsu being a more “vengeful, underdog” type of character- makes me wonder if she’s going to be a kind of spin off “what if” of Shino if her lover had been kidnapped/defeated by the bandits (Ronin??) and she’s decided to go on a personal mission to find and rescue/avenge him/her village. I think that like how Jin Sakai was a noblemen/samurai who ended up “lowering” his status to that of the Ghost- I think Atsu will essentially be a commoner/thief “nobody” who instead RISES her status to that of the “Ghost” by helping defend the Ainu/commonfolk around Mount Yotei who are most likely getting their asses handed to them by the Ronin/Samurai terf wars happening on top of them.]

    • @ToothpasteJuice

      They did that with GoT. Even before Iki. Once Jin uses the poison, which Lord Shimura warned him made him no better than the mongols, mongols began using the poison immediately against civilians and against Jin with their arrows, proving Shimura's point. Now that I think of it, basically the whole point of Ghost of Tsushima was Shimura trying to keep Jin from becoming like them and failing.

    About the immersion you talked about and justifications for Atsu, I feel that most of the problem with these games is because they have the pretense of "trying to be authentic".

      There was Japanese presence in the south of Hokkaido, the Matsumae. They traded with the Ainu and generally had good, peaceful relations with them during the late Sengoku and Edo periods.

      @@Perceval777 But like Shogunate said, this new "map" looks "too japanese".

      I can answer some of your concerns. First of, what was the Yamato population like in Hokkaido : the island had long been a place for dissident and state enemies to be exiled to in the High medieval period. This might be why the game chose to depict so many ronin there. Most of the Yamato population only truly settled in the 14t century in the Oshima Peninsula, especially the part closest to Honshu, namely the so called "12 garrisons", 12 forts maintained by the Ando clan. In the 15th century, the neighboring ainus wared with them and destroyed the estern most garrisons, leaving Matsumae as the main center of Power. The city was a hub of northern trade, with many chinese goods and siberian traders present. The trade of these chinese goods, fur and fish was the main economy of the region because the climate was too harsh for any significant rice farming. Thus the population couldn't be very large, less than 15k yamato at least around 1600, mostly around the Ports. Because of rebellions there was a relative limit between where ainu and yamato could freely go, yamato rarely venturing outside the Matsumae domain (they tried to force every trader to go by them and not ainu ports). If some smiths worked for ainus, the big influx of Yamato bandits and crucialy, illegal miners aroudn Yotei, came with the gold rush of the second quarter to mid 17th century. So would there be much Yamato Japanese cultural elements in Hokkaido in 1603? Not really outside the coast, which might add, was populated by "yamato" but mostly Watarito ('渡党), roughtly travel party, aka a nebulous group that existed since the 14th century in the Tsugaru Strait, likely mixed ainu/Yamato people who worked as traders ; the people of the Matsumae domain often wore ainu clothes ; Kakizaki Yoshihiro, the Matsumae lord, even wore an ainu traded chinese robe when meeting Ieyasu, to show that he was no mere Japanese but also "lord of the ainus" (think of how the Grandmaster of the teutonic Order started using the title King of Prussia, an area outside the holy roman empire, to put himself on greater footting vis-à-vis the Emperor, here its the same with the Shugun). Period texts also often dont consider Matsumae fully japanese, they are barbarians, degenerates. TLDR : Yamato mostly lived in the far south of Hokkaido, were very few, mixed, partially proud to be seen as outsiders and "half barbarians" in Honshu, and rarely ventured as north as Yotei, so the setting seems innacurate.

    As a Golden Kamuy fan I think 19th century would be much more suited for this setting

    Lady Masako, Yuna, and Sensei Ishikawa’s student Tomoe all strong female warriors with good reasons and stories about why they fight. I’m sure the studio can handle Atsu’s story just fine and you don’t need to worry about a woman being a warrior

    After watching the trailer for the first time, and utilizing my extremely limited knowledge regarding Japanese history, at first, I thought the protagonist was a Ochimushagari, but, of course, I assume there is an interesting, more profound reason why she is hunting ronin. I'm looking forward toward new information regarding Ghost of Yōtei's story.

    Yeah I completely agree they should always do a backstory or character ark in the game. Also they should keep the game consistent throughout. Personally I really liked playing Ghost of Tsushima that was last real game I played before I completely stopped. I just don't have time for it any more.
