Atsu is wearing a hannya mask! Hannya, as we know from several of Goombah’s videos, are women who were so consumed by negative emotions that they transformed into demons. The fact that our main character is female and is wearing one of those masks may have a symbolic meaning towards both her backstory and her future development as a character! Will she perform acts that she previously found heinous and metaphorically embrace the demon inside of her, turning her into a Hannya?
I have to imagine the shamisen will be the replacement to Tsushima's "haiku spots". Still, we know so little of this game, but all these theories lend to the "ghost" motif, and I'm here for all of it.
As GG mentioned, while I am excited for the announcement, I'm still having concerns about how they'll going to portray the Ainu. Because it IS an ONGOING sensitive issue, and not making an appearance at all will be ...just an erasure 💀 Also if that's the time and place they've chosen, then I'll be looking forward for them giving some insights to feudal Japan's colonialism. Which will be a HEAVY theme.

Sucker Punch i believe will take great care about how they will handle the Ainu people, in fact my theory is that Atsu was apart of a tribe that was slaughtered by the bad guy and she's out for revenge. We saw in Tsushima that the team was very careful and respectful of the culture & time period, we would think they will do the same for the new game as well.

IF this is basically Red Dead Japan I'd be freaking happy with it. I loved the first game a lot, but changing it up for the 2nd is fine if they do something interesting with the change.
Ghost of Tsushima is one of my favorite PlayStation games ever so I’m very happy that sucker punch is continuing this series in some way. I’m especially pumped because it takes place the same year the Tokugawa Shogunate started and it takes place in what is now Hokkaido which means we could see some Ainu culture in action
There's something I've noticed too If Ghost of Tsushima was the *start* of the change of Samurai life, which leads to their legendary depiction in the Warring States Period, Ghost of Yotei the *end* of that change.

@@darthnutsack6717 Often it starts with anime and video games and then becoming curious about what it is we're seeing. Anime is the best commodity Japan shares with the world, followed by video games like those made by Nintendo. The rise of the Internet and UA-cam has made access to learning about Japan easier. People like Gaijin Goomba *want* to share what they learn so there isn't so much false ideas and misinformation going around. Cause let's be honest, here in the west, we often only learn about Japan in the context of WWII, which, while important, is also out of date and not very helpful in understanding what Japan as a people are actually like. People get curious about Japan from that too.

@@darthnutsack6717 It is indeed since the company that made Ghost of Tsushima isn't a Japanese company, but it's clear they did their homework and weren't selling the false idea that the game is 100% accurate. That could have really hurt the game if they didn't acknowledge that. It's why if there is going to be Ainu representation in this new game, I'm confident it'll be there to help bring attention to that minority group in Japan because the Ainu are like the Native Americans of Japan. They're in great need of representation and preservation because it's an endangered culture.
Im gonna take a stab and say the MC is either a decendant of either Clan Shimura or Sakai and is inspired by the Legend of the Ghost to do some vigilante justice
@@legendofliamd it would have to be shimura since clan Sakai was dissolved by the shogunate due to jin becoming the ghost and the people wanting his help more then the shoguns
I mean she doesn't even have to be a descendant. Remember how Ghost ended; the Ghost was amassing an army to march on the Khan..... It's very possible Atsu just identifies with the LEGEND of the ghost and wants to walk his footsteps. Especially considering this is some 500 years AFTER ghost
1:30 - I remember reading about an (allegedly) old Japanese folktale about how the kami of Mt. Fuji and Mt. Yotei wanted to know whose mountain was taller, so they built a long drainpipe-kinda thing with one end on each peak and watched which direction the water flowed, because it would drain towards the lower end. When it showed that Yotei was taller, the kami of Fuji got mad and smashed the top off of Yotei to make it shorter than Fuji, and that's why the top of Mt. Yotei looks like that. Mind you, this source I had read it from didn't cite its source, so it could just be entirely made up.
Actual Japanese person here. It's simplified quite a bit, but that _is_ the general gist of that particular story. Sometimes it's a different mountain, but it always ends with "Mt. Fuji gets pissed that it's not the tallest and does something to make the other mountain shorter," whether that's punching the top of the mountain off, sinking it and turning it into an island, etc.
Just a surface level observation, but I wonder if wiping Names from a scroll with blood might be inspired by The Kouga Ninja Scrolls. (Which at least a few people here might know for the Manga/Anime adaption, Basilisk.) I would LOVE to see that Sucker Punch is taking influence not JUST from Japanese history. But even Japanese historical fiction. And the works of Futaro Yamada (Specifically Kouga Ninpo-Cho and Makai Tensho) are HIGHLY influential in that regard! If I’m right and Sucker Punch is taking influence from Futaro Yamada, at least a little. That will make me VERY happy. Edit: I feel it’s pertinent information to add that Kouga Ninpo-Cho was first published in 1959 and was the first in a long running series of controversial, yet popular ninja pulp novels (which also included the aforementioned Makai Tensho) that ran all the way up to Yamada’s Death in 2001. It is HIGHLY influential in the realm of Japanese Historical and Ninja fiction! If something in media wasn’t inspired by the folklore mythology of ninja, there’s a GOOD chance it was influenced by Yamada’s books. Sorry. This has been my obsession for the past YEAR and I really wanted to talk about it. 😅
I'm exceedingly interested in how the Ainu are portrayed here myself. This is before the real colonialism but I think the Japanese still had a foothold in Ezo somewhere. So I'll be interested in how they handle this.
I've always thought that Wild West meets Far East was a great combo. For me the best Borderlands 3 DLC was Bounty of Blood. I thought the movie "The Warriors Way" was great stylistically. So Red Dead but Samurai style should be a blast to play.
I'm glad to see a varying range of weapons in this game because one of my very few complaints about Ghost of Tsushima was that it was pretty much exclusively the use of swords and bows. The combat is great in the game, don't get me wrong, but I wanted to see the option to use spears and naginatas at least as well. In many different cultures and ages of ancient warfare, polearms were heavily utilized. For example, in China (even today in the practice of traditional martial arts) the spear is often referred to as, "The God of Weapons," or, "The King of Weapons," and for good reason. I know that Samurai are most often thought of these days as peerless swordsmen, but let's keep in mind they began primarily as mounted archers, and no Samurai was above using a polearm if it was available, but I'm rambling at this point. The Kusarigama inclusion is pretty unique and interesting and I'm glad to finally see it treated as a weapon not being used by a Shinobi because I'm sick of people misunderstanding what Shinobi were and what they did. Similarly to my complaints about the lack of polearms, I'm also glad to see rifles make an appearance because Japan had access to and were proficient with firearms a lot sooner in history than a lot of people think, so it's refreshing to see them included. Honestly, I'm just curious to see where Ghost of Yotei is going and I don't mind anachronisms here and there nor do I mind seeing a female warrior, because I do like seeing the warrior women of that age in Japan get their due. Personally, I would've given her access to a naginata and tanto as well given those were two of the most common weapons taught to be used by female warriors of the day, but again that's just a minor nitpick.
really hoping we get some of the really whacky-lookin' firearms they cooked up in the period, either for the Ghost or for the enemies to fire at the ghost I presume the Ghost is going to have a long gun and a pistol as ghost weapons, with very limited shots for alpha strikes on heavy enemies or something
When i first heard Ghost was getting a sequel, i had a shitfit. Jin's story is done. Theres nothing more that can be told with him. Let him rest. However this trailer has me saying "well played, this is a perfect sequel idea"
It looks like Atsu has a katana and wakizashi, instead of Jin’s katana and tantō, which could point to this game having less of a stealth focus, since Jin used his tantō as a dagger while Atsu uses both swords to dual wield. I really like the idea of Sucker Punch experimenting with different gameplay styles. The name ‘Ghost’ doesn’t lock them into a strictly shinobi character, and I think they’re using that to their advantage.
The moment this comes out on PC, I'm getting it. The fact it's a Tsushima successor and the twin blades hooked me, the Kusarigama and matchlock gun sold me. And who in the name of the Sanzu river cares if the MC is a girl, I'm just here for the staby-staby fun time and the story. Suckerpunch did excellent with Tsushima, I have no doubt this will be as good. I'm also going to parrot what many people have said: I hope we get a Mythic Tale about the Ghost of Tsushima and get to claim the Ghost Armor. That would be very cool.
Considering how a major theme of 'Tsushima' was the use of increasingly savage means to combat an overwhelming enemy force, it only makes sense that Atsu would use whatever she could pick up, which seems to include two swords and a gun.
I'm sure someone mentioned it in over 300 comments, but the editor's note has merit. She could be crossing off the names of her list with their blood. It would make for an interesting visual and character moment.
I could be wrong, but in that scene when she's wiping the blood across that cloth, she seem to be slashing out the word "Snake", the word above that say "Spider"
Good video as always, gaijin. Since were in October I have something you could review this month. For which ninja: tenchu series Yokai hunters: Donna benevento and her dolls Culture shock: muramasa sword Which samurai:onimusha series These are just my thoughts on this, but what do you think.
So a potential Ex-Onna-bugeisha hunting bounties in a land people fled to to disappear, likely also having a bounty on herself and an ultimate person to hunt down with a more personal reason. Having Ainu villages and people to talk to could be really cool. I liked how I could IMMEDIATELY recognize many similarities to the character designs for several ainu people in golden kamuey, as if that picture itself was used as a ref sheet (and at this point im sure it was) Having a complex relationship between the ainu and the japanese could be really cool to show ingame since you can really run into different stances and perspectives. It'll take a LOT of care if they go for it but has so much potential. I get it likely wont be that far but it'd be really sad to see such a different culture get sidestepped in the very land they call home
Thank you Gaijin. Trailers give us a taste of what to expect, tell us that the piece of content exists, and wets our appetite for the release of said content. Going expressing hate on something that you haven’t experienced is ridiculous. If the type of game play, story, or franchise doesn’t appeal to you that is perfectly fine. But just because it doesn’t appeal to you, or you may see something that you don’t like doesn’t mean that the game is terrible. Wait for the full game’s release, and either play it yourself, or wait for a reliable game reviewer to give you the highlights, and negatives of the game. Then with that info decide on whether the game is worth the money, or not.
Thats not the point tho. The point is companies that hate gamers like Sweet baby incs, push there personal agenda and attack the gamers for not consuming content they dont want to purchase

I've been LONG overdue in finally getting to playing Ghost of Tsushima, and with this announcement I am more motivated to do so more than ever! I hope Ghost of Yotei is just as good if not even better than its predecessor!

I watched in another video that the bounty poster stated that it was for a woman, last seen in Yotei, and a bounty of 500 gold for her head ( technically its for "her neck" but we all know what it means.) This tells me this is a revenge story. Atsu is after someone very rich and influential, and the other party also wants her dead so bad. They put a bounty on her so big, it made Atsu such a tempting target for every ronin out there.
Listening to you describing Hokkaido’s history reminded me of how Pokemon Legends Arceus showed many parallels with that island’s history. I haven’t played Tsushima yet, but this and PLA have me even more interested in Yotei.
I'm glad I'm not going crazy when I heard the Western twang in the music. Also I'm giving Sucker Punch the benefit of the doubt here, sure the voice actress for the main character may be....a little on the troublesome side for a lot of folks in the current gaming climate but odds are greater than 90% that if I pick this game up I'm gonna play it in Japanese just like I did the first game. I wanna see more before I jump on the bandwagon for or against this game. Also, on the wolf thing? Look at 5:05...her tsuba for her katana are a pair of wolves chasing each other. I think Sucker Punch may have taken a shot at Assassin's Creed Shadows as well because we see her using a Kusari-gama at one point just like the female lead they have planned for the game...which they pushed back into Feb of next year....the same year THIS game comes out? Oh they are asking for a butt whooping if Sucker Punch does as good a job with this as they did with Tsushima.
I think your 100% on the money on the revenge ala Shirayukihime (1976) movie. We know suckerpunch loves to reference cinema so this makes the most sense. Really excited for this!

It's probably like Red Dead 2, you play an Outlaw who either did something very wrong and fled, or is hunting down someone who wronged them. Maybe a powerful gang of bandits, or clan. It's different from GoT and I really dig the concept. Samurai and Western movies really loved to take inspiration from each other. I can easily imagine a quest where you find different factions fighting inside a town and have to solve their problems like in Yojimbo or Fistful of Dollars. Really excited to see more.

I just started this game last week, then this trailer pops up out of nowhere. Thanks for the great insight GG, I really love this sort of Wild West Japan thing they seem to be going for. Already having a ton of fun and not even halfway through Tsushima, but now I have another game to look forward to.
I am all for Ghost of Yotei, but i just wait for the PC version since to me i have more fun PC then Console single player. As much this game next in the Ghost of Tushima series, i just play Ghost of Tushinuma and wait for the PC version to drop.
@@FoxyPercival714 my country is USA which far as i am aware of is not have a ban but is true since that Helldivers 2 PSN account locked in. As much is stupid of Sony for sure, But like usual they will put on PC just like God of War 2018, Helldivers 2 even partnered, Marvel Spider man series, and Ghost of Tushiminma which is on PC. If the money trail goes to PC Sony will do the same.
Given the female samurai and most likely ainu with the time period giving that this the shogunate is enforcing law and order to over top level. There going to be jabs at how the japanese government can be very opessivse and destroying lives and the likes. Aka stuff that you go "subtle game, subtle"
I have to admit, I absolutely loved Ghost of Tsushima (except the whole "oh no, you taught the Mongols to poison people, which...they were...already...doing?"), but that love was tainted a bit finding out it was being appropriated by ultranationalists. This game looks gorgeous, promises to be a similar gameplay experience with _more,_ I absolutely love shamisen music, and (bonus points) apparently it's making some of the worst people on the internet angry, so I'm already hyped! If this is the game that makes me finally buy a PS5 (like Tsushima did with PS4...with a little help from Bloodborne), I won't be surprised.
Honestly I wouldn't concern myself to much with them. I liked the first game from the beginning because of it's specific vibe and art style I hadn't seen anywhere before. I did think it deserved the GOTY at 2020, but sadly people being mad always atracts the people who are mad their whole live which is probably why you saw them (especially ironic when their is a side quest about a gay man in the game). This game looks the same with more, so I am excited. Can't wait to go all blue eyed samurai on the enemies. And the weirdos might die down after election again. They might get mad if it wins next year, (because woman etc.) but I personally also hope as a Metroid fan that Prime 4 is good enough that it wins. So I am excited for both
To be completely fair, you can instantly discount those people as not even having played the game lol, it sets out to criticize the myth of bushido itself
I find it weird that some people are decrying a game for "historical accuracy" when they didn't do it for other games...its as if theres another issue they have with the game
@starmaker75 ....you do realize the Mongol invasion of Japan and the conquering of the island of Tsushima was an actual thing right? Like that actually happened, and a storm, or Kamikaze, destroyed the Mongol boats before they could make it to the Japanese mainland.
My theory is that Atsu was a part of an Ainu tribe and that they were slaughtered by the main bad guy and their crew whoever that may be and she is on a revenge tour taking up the mantle of the Ghost from stories or legends that she may have heard from her elders about Jin. I took heavy Kill Bill vibes as well as Female Prisoner Scorpion from the trailer. Atsu is wearing yellow which i think was deliberate. It has a Wild West theme and tone and from what i read Hokkaido at that time was basically the equivalent of the Wild West. The scene where Atsu cleans her katana & wipes it across a Kanji which i think says 'Spider' may be some sort of hit list. Just like the Bride in Kill Bill she is targeting specific individuals.
While i worried about the portrayal of the Ainu people, the rest i am super excited about it, i also feel it will be significantly different in gameplay to Tsushima in that it will be less "shinobi" like, because it isnt fighting off an invading force thru sabotage, infiltration, terror tactics and assassination, or atleast the trailer imply it isn't.
A Red Dead style game in Japan definitely sounds like a good time. Like a lot of people, I have my concerns about the development and certain ideologies seeping into the dialogue, but am trying to be optimistic.
1603 is both the year Tokugawa Ieyasu formalized the Tokugawa shogunate, and the year that Rokugo Rebellion, which was the last stand of ~1000 ronin samurai after their master, Onodera Yoshimichi was defeated and put to exile by Tokugawa. So I imagine both may end up playing roles.
I'm assuming you've seen Ian's forgotten weapons video about the Tanegashima, he had a beautiful example he looked at at the Morphy auctions, and if you haven't... check it out
Hm…my main thoughts are that SP is taking a Kurosawa approach with the ghost series, taking inspiration from other games and applying them to the series as a whole. Like GoT being assassin creed and with the sequel being RDR (RDR2 specifically). That’s my thoughts on how SP is going to do this series and I’m hoping that this games a smash hit like GoT.
It occurs to me that if Atsu is the widow of a warrior slain by the people she's hunting for revenge, she'd basically be a Japanese version of Sadie Adler from RDR2, and I'm perfectly fine with that. Being a daughter would work, too.
If anyone is complaining about the game pushing an “agenda,” that’s on you. Who cares about the actor’s views on social media when we should worry about our own personal problems in life.

I’ve gotten away from pre orders given the questionable quality at launch these days. Given the goodwill from Ghost of Tsushima, however, Ghost of Yotei is one that I’ll absolutely pre order. I’m stoked!

One of the only complains i had about the game was that there were no more weapons to use, only the Katana... And now we have more! They got a game that couldnt be more perfect and madr it more perfect!
So, I been studying Niten Ichi Ryu and Miyamoto Musashi for several years now. Just got back from Japan from a two week pilgrimage to various Musashi related sites. From what I gather, two sword styles are not uncommon. While Musashi invented his style more as an art of war philosophy, in 1603, he was still fairly young and hadn't quite gained enough notoriety nor developed Niten enough to pass on. I suspect the protagonist in Yotei is using an older two sword style here, not Niten.
Hi gaijin. Been following your channel for a while now. Just want to ask what do you have to say about assassin's creed shadows? It seems like people are debating about yasuke's historical accuracy.
Because the info the game used and that many who don’t follow history seem to believe has been fabricated. Yasuke did exist. That’s no issue. It’s that people believe he was some great warrior when he wasn’t. He was a spectacle. Japanese historians don’t even know much about him and are going by some documents written at the time. Those documents don’t mention anything about him being a great warrior. If that’s all that exists then where did Thomas Lockley get all this other info to claim his book is fact? It would’ve been one thing if Yasuke was an npc the character met instead of the main character. Plus a lot of the stuff seen in the game doesn’t make sense. Cherry blossoms wouldn’t be pink at the same time people are harvesting rice. Other items in the game didn’t exist yet

@@corylocke7754 there’s a difference between the story telling. For starters, Thomas Lockley stated his book as fact. Ubisoft followed that and said Yasuke was a strong samurai warrior. Tsushima was an actual event while the MC was fictional. Everything in the game was accurate with some added elements. All the other AC games had area appropriate and fictional MCs but then the one game that takes place in Japan we get a foreigner who was a real person but not the way as presented. Why didn’t we get a fictional MC like the other games. Yeah we got that njnja chick but she should’ve been the MC. Samurai don’t wear that armor out in everyday life. As I mentioned they put in things haphazardly. Tori gates don’t mark villages. They’re used for shrines. Ubisoft didn’t care. Why didn’t they add kamikaze pilots into it since they were adding other things that didn’t care. Japanese people who played the game pointed out how strange everything was in the game.

But on top of that, why would you be consistent up until now with having MCs from the area in which the game takes place? Why would they make the MC him of all people when they were all fiction before? Why did they choose the one foreigner of the time period to be a samurai and claim he was when he was never? Why wasn’t the MC Japanese? Ubisoft claimed we needed to be an outsider to look in to the culture but we don’t. We can be a Japanese character. Yasuke was better suited to be an npc just like he was in real life.

if i had to put my 2 cents, i would say atsu could be a retired onna-musha(retired because of the governmental reform); as for why she went to yotei...well she is hunting but what?? i guess that parchment that she caries has the nicknames of a group of thieves/murderers that ruined her life forcing her to get back in the role of warrior, searching vengeange P.S: i really like that both jin and astsu play some kind of instrument, jin played a flute and atsu a shamisen
For historical context this was a period Tokugawa takeover of the Shogunate after the battle of Sekigahara in 1600 pre total eradication of to Toyotami clan in Osaka and post Imujin war defeat in korea 5 years ago and the year Tokugawa Ieyasu was given the tittle officially as the Shogun and the modern day Hokkaido was not really part of Japan at this time and most inhabited by Ainu people and vagabonds and Ronins with other exiles honestly read the Manga Vagabond it really good for a idea of what happens to the samurais who where on the losing side of all theses wars maybe we will meet a young musashi we fought a decendent of a great khan last time

Atsu is wearing a hannya mask! Hannya, as we know from several of Goombah’s videos, are women who were so consumed by negative emotions that they transformed into demons. The fact that our main character is female and is wearing one of those masks may have a symbolic meaning towards both her backstory and her future development as a character! Will she perform acts that she previously found heinous and metaphorically embrace the demon inside of her, turning her into a Hannya?
That would fit with the theme of Tsushima. I wouldn't put it past them

Sucker Punch i believe will take great care about how they will handle the Ainu people, in fact my theory is that Atsu was apart of a tribe that was slaughtered by the bad guy and she's out for revenge. We saw in Tsushima that the team was very careful and respectful of the culture & time period, we would think they will do the same for the new game as well.

Ghost of Tsushima is one of my favorite PlayStation games ever so I’m very happy that sucker punch is continuing this series in some way. I’m especially pumped because it takes place the same year the Tokugawa Shogunate started and it takes place in what is now Hokkaido which means we could see some Ainu culture in action

Anime is the best commodity Japan shares with the world, followed by video games like those made by Nintendo.
The rise of the Internet and UA-cam has made access to learning about Japan easier. People like Gaijin Goomba *want* to share what they learn so there isn't so much false ideas and misinformation going around.
Cause let's be honest, here in the west, we often only learn about Japan in the context of WWII, which, while important, is also out of date and not very helpful in understanding what Japan as a people are actually like. People get curious about Japan from that too.

@@darthnutsack6717 It is indeed since the company that made Ghost of Tsushima isn't a Japanese company, but it's clear they did their homework and weren't selling the false idea that the game is 100% accurate. That could have really hurt the game if they didn't acknowledge that. It's why if there is going to be Ainu representation in this new game, I'm confident it'll be there to help bring attention to that minority group in Japan because the Ainu are like the Native Americans of Japan. They're in great need of representation and preservation because it's an endangered culture.
Im gonna take a stab and say the MC is either a decendant of either Clan Shimura or Sakai and is inspired by the Legend of the Ghost to do some vigilante justice

It's very possible Atsu just identifies with the LEGEND of the ghost and wants to walk his footsteps. Especially considering this is some 500 years AFTER ghost

1:30 - I remember reading about an (allegedly) old Japanese folktale about how the kami of Mt. Fuji and Mt. Yotei wanted to know whose mountain was taller, so they built a long drainpipe-kinda thing with one end on each peak and watched which direction the water flowed, because it would drain towards the lower end. When it showed that Yotei was taller, the kami of Fuji got mad and smashed the top off of Yotei to make it shorter than Fuji, and that's why the top of Mt. Yotei looks like that.
Mind you, this source I had read it from didn't cite its source, so it could just be entirely made up.
Actual Japanese person here. It's simplified quite a bit, but that _is_ the general gist of that particular story.
Sometimes it's a different mountain, but it always ends with "Mt. Fuji gets pissed that it's not the tallest and does something to make the other mountain shorter," whether that's punching the top of the mountain off, sinking it and turning it into an island, etc.

Just a surface level observation, but I wonder if wiping Names from a scroll with blood might be inspired by The Kouga Ninja Scrolls. (Which at least a few people here might know for the Manga/Anime adaption, Basilisk.)
I would LOVE to see that Sucker Punch is taking influence not JUST from Japanese history. But even Japanese historical fiction. And the works of Futaro Yamada (Specifically Kouga Ninpo-Cho and Makai Tensho) are HIGHLY influential in that regard!

Edit: I feel it’s pertinent information to add that Kouga Ninpo-Cho was first published in 1959 and was the first in a long running series of controversial, yet popular ninja pulp novels (which also included the aforementioned Makai Tensho) that ran all the way up to Yamada’s Death in 2001. It is HIGHLY influential in the realm of Japanese Historical and Ninja fiction! If something in media wasn’t inspired by the folklore mythology of ninja, there’s a GOOD chance it was influenced by Yamada’s books.

I'm exceedingly interested in how the Ainu are portrayed here myself. This is before the real colonialism but I think the Japanese still had a foothold in Ezo somewhere. So I'll be interested in how they handle this.
I've always thought that Wild West meets Far East was a great combo. For me the best Borderlands 3 DLC was Bounty of Blood. I thought the movie "The Warriors Way" was great stylistically. So Red Dead but Samurai style should be a blast to play.
I'm glad to see a varying range of weapons in this game because one of my very few complaints about Ghost of Tsushima was that it was pretty much exclusively the use of swords and bows. The combat is great in the game, don't get me wrong, but I wanted to see the option to use spears and naginatas at least as well. In many different cultures and ages of ancient warfare, polearms were heavily utilized. For example, in China (even today in the practice of traditional martial arts) the spear is often referred to as, "The God of Weapons," or, "The King of Weapons," and for good reason.
I know that Samurai are most often thought of these days as peerless swordsmen, but let's keep in mind they began primarily as mounted archers, and no Samurai was above using a polearm if it was available, but I'm rambling at this point. The Kusarigama inclusion is pretty unique and interesting and I'm glad to finally see it treated as a weapon not being used by a Shinobi because I'm sick of people misunderstanding what Shinobi were and what they did.
Similarly to my complaints about the lack of polearms, I'm also glad to see rifles make an appearance because Japan had access to and were proficient with firearms a lot sooner in history than a lot of people think, so it's refreshing to see them included. Honestly, I'm just curious to see where Ghost of Yotei is going and I don't mind anachronisms here and there nor do I mind seeing a female warrior, because I do like seeing the warrior women of that age in Japan get their due. Personally, I would've given her access to a naginata and tanto as well given those were two of the most common weapons taught to be used by female warriors of the day, but again that's just a minor nitpick.
As far as weapons go, one thing I'm missing is the naginata, which is also the most famous weapon used by Onna-Bugeisha.
To be fair samurai also mostly used spears
really hoping we get some of the really whacky-lookin' firearms they cooked up in the period, either for the Ghost or for the enemies to fire at the ghost
I presume the Ghost is going to have a long gun and a pistol as ghost weapons, with very limited shots for alpha strikes on heavy enemies or something

When i first heard Ghost was getting a sequel, i had a shitfit. Jin's story is done. Theres nothing more that can be told with him. Let him rest.
However this trailer has me saying "well played, this is a perfect sequel idea"
4:36 no, this is the follow up of the cutscene where she kills the dude that said "Still think you're the hunter?". He was one of her targets.
It looks like Atsu has a katana and wakizashi, instead of Jin’s katana and tantō, which could point to this game having less of a stealth focus, since Jin used his tantō as a dagger while Atsu uses both swords to dual wield. I really like the idea of Sucker Punch experimenting with different gameplay styles. The name ‘Ghost’ doesn’t lock them into a strictly shinobi character, and I think they’re using that to their advantage.
The moment this comes out on PC, I'm getting it. The fact it's a Tsushima successor and the twin blades hooked me, the Kusarigama and matchlock gun sold me. And who in the name of the Sanzu river cares if the MC is a girl, I'm just here for the staby-staby fun time and the story. Suckerpunch did excellent with Tsushima, I have no doubt this will be as good.
I'm also going to parrot what many people have said: I hope we get a Mythic Tale about the Ghost of Tsushima and get to claim the Ghost Armor. That would be very cool.
Considering how a major theme of 'Tsushima' was the use of increasingly savage means to combat an overwhelming enemy force, it only makes sense that Atsu would use whatever she could pick up, which seems to include two swords and a gun.
I'm sure someone mentioned it in over 300 comments, but the editor's note has merit. She could be crossing off the names of her list with their blood. It would make for an interesting visual and character moment.
I could be wrong, but in that scene when she's wiping the blood across that cloth, she seem to be slashing out the word "Snake", the word above that say "Spider"

So a potential Ex-Onna-bugeisha hunting bounties in a land people fled to to disappear, likely also having a bounty on herself and an ultimate person to hunt down with a more personal reason.
Having Ainu villages and people to talk to could be really cool. I liked how I could IMMEDIATELY recognize many similarities to the character designs for several ainu people in golden kamuey, as if that picture itself was used as a ref sheet (and at this point im sure it was)
Having a complex relationship between the ainu and the japanese could be really cool to show ingame since you can really run into different stances and perspectives. It'll take a LOT of care if they go for it but has so much potential. I get it likely wont be that far but it'd be really sad to see such a different culture get sidestepped in the very land they call home
I will love to see a DLC for Usagi Yojimbo, or just Yojimbo. If not any of them, lone Wolf.
Thank you Gaijin. Trailers give us a taste of what to expect, tell us that the piece of content exists, and wets our appetite for the release of said content. Going expressing hate on something that you haven’t experienced is ridiculous. If the type of game play, story, or franchise doesn’t appeal to you that is perfectly fine. But just because it doesn’t appeal to you, or you may see something that you don’t like doesn’t mean that the game is terrible. Wait for the full game’s release, and either play it yourself, or wait for a reliable game reviewer to give you the highlights, and negatives of the game. Then with that info decide on whether the game is worth the money, or not.

I watched in another video that the bounty poster stated that it was for a woman, last seen in Yotei, and a bounty of 500 gold for her head ( technically its for "her neck" but we all know what it means.)
This tells me this is a revenge story. Atsu is after someone very rich and influential, and the other party also wants her dead so bad. They put a bounty on her so big, it made Atsu such a tempting target for every ronin out there.
Listening to you describing Hokkaido’s history reminded me of how Pokemon Legends Arceus showed many parallels with that island’s history. I haven’t played Tsushima yet, but this and PLA have me even more interested in Yotei.

I'm glad I'm not going crazy when I heard the Western twang in the music. Also I'm giving Sucker Punch the benefit of the doubt here, sure the voice actress for the main character may be....a little on the troublesome side for a lot of folks in the current gaming climate but odds are greater than 90% that if I pick this game up I'm gonna play it in Japanese just like I did the first game. I wanna see more before I jump on the bandwagon for or against this game. Also, on the wolf thing? Look at 5:05...her tsuba for her katana are a pair of wolves chasing each other. I think Sucker Punch may have taken a shot at Assassin's Creed Shadows as well because we see her using a Kusari-gama at one point just like the female lead they have planned for the game...which they pushed back into Feb of next year....the same year THIS game comes out? Oh they are asking for a butt whooping if Sucker Punch does as good a job with this as they did with Tsushima.
I think your 100% on the money on the revenge ala Shirayukihime (1976) movie. We know suckerpunch loves to reference cinema so this makes the most sense. Really excited for this!

I'm kinda bummed we aren't getting a direct sequel with Jin and Yuna, but I'm excited for this game regardless.
It's probably like Red Dead 2, you play an Outlaw who either did something very wrong and fled, or is hunting down someone who wronged them. Maybe a powerful gang of bandits, or clan. It's different from GoT and I really dig the concept. Samurai and Western movies really loved to take inspiration from each other. I can easily imagine a quest where you find different factions fighting inside a town and have to solve their problems like in Yojimbo or Fistful of Dollars. Really excited to see more.

Already having a ton of fun and not even halfway through Tsushima, but now I have another game to look forward to.

I am all for Ghost of Yotei, but i just wait for the PC version since to me i have more fun PC then Console single player. As much this game next in the Ghost of Tushima series, i just play Ghost of Tushinuma and wait for the PC version to drop.

I have to admit, I absolutely loved Ghost of Tsushima (except the whole "oh no, you taught the Mongols to poison people, which...they were...already...doing?"), but that love was tainted a bit finding out it was being appropriated by ultranationalists.
This game looks gorgeous, promises to be a similar gameplay experience with _more,_ I absolutely love shamisen music, and (bonus points) apparently it's making some of the worst people on the internet angry, so I'm already hyped! If this is the game that makes me finally buy a PS5 (like Tsushima did with PS4...with a little help from Bloodborne), I won't be surprised.
Honestly I wouldn't concern myself to much with them. I liked the first game from the beginning because of it's specific vibe and art style I hadn't seen anywhere before. I did think it deserved the GOTY at 2020, but sadly people being mad always atracts the people who are mad their whole live which is probably why you saw them (especially ironic when their is a side quest about a gay man in the game).
This game looks the same with more, so I am excited. Can't wait to go all blue eyed samurai on the enemies. And the weirdos might die down after election again. They might get mad if it wins next year, (because woman etc.) but I personally also hope as a Metroid fan that Prime 4 is good enough that it wins. So I am excited for both

@starmaker75 ....you do realize the Mongol invasion of Japan and the conquering of the island of Tsushima was an actual thing right? Like that actually happened, and a storm, or Kamikaze, destroyed the Mongol boats before they could make it to the Japanese mainland.

My theory is that Atsu was a part of an Ainu tribe and that they were slaughtered by the main bad guy and their crew whoever that may be and she is on a revenge tour taking up the mantle of the Ghost from stories or legends that she may have heard from her elders about Jin.
I took heavy Kill Bill vibes as well as Female Prisoner Scorpion from the trailer. Atsu is wearing yellow which i think was deliberate. It has a Wild West theme and tone and from what i read Hokkaido at that time was basically the equivalent of the Wild West. The scene where Atsu cleans her katana & wipes it across a Kanji which i think says 'Spider' may be some sort of hit list. Just like the Bride in Kill Bill she is targeting specific individuals.
While i worried about the portrayal of the Ainu people, the rest i am super excited about it, i also feel it will be significantly different in gameplay to Tsushima in that it will be less "shinobi" like, because it isnt fighting off an invading force thru sabotage, infiltration, terror tactics and assassination, or atleast the trailer imply it isn't.

A Red Dead style game in Japan definitely sounds like a good time. Like a lot of people, I have my concerns about the development and certain ideologies seeping into the dialogue, but am trying to be optimistic.
1603 is both the year Tokugawa Ieyasu formalized the Tokugawa shogunate, and the year that Rokugo Rebellion, which was the last stand of ~1000 ronin samurai after their master, Onodera Yoshimichi was defeated and put to exile by Tokugawa. So I imagine both may end up playing roles.

Hm…my main thoughts are that SP is taking a Kurosawa approach with the ghost series, taking inspiration from other games and applying them to the series as a whole. Like GoT being assassin creed and with the sequel being RDR (RDR2 specifically). That’s my thoughts on how SP is going to do this series and I’m hoping that this games a smash hit like GoT.
It occurs to me that if Atsu is the widow of a warrior slain by the people she's hunting for revenge, she'd basically be a Japanese version of Sadie Adler from RDR2, and I'm perfectly fine with that. Being a daughter would work, too.

I’ve gotten away from pre orders given the questionable quality at launch these days. Given the goodwill from Ghost of Tsushima, however, Ghost of Yotei is one that I’ll absolutely pre order.

One of the only complains i had about the game was that there were no more weapons to use, only the Katana...

MAN!! its been a while since I've stopped in to this channel.
So, I been studying Niten Ichi Ryu and Miyamoto Musashi for several years now. Just got back from Japan from a two week pilgrimage to various Musashi related sites. From what I gather, two sword styles are not uncommon. While Musashi invented his style more as an art of war philosophy, in 1603, he was still fairly young and hadn't quite gained enough notoriety nor developed Niten enough to pass on. I suspect the protagonist in Yotei is using an older two sword style here, not Niten.
There is a very good reason why the genre Samurai Western exists 😉

Hi gaijin. Been following your channel for a while now. Just want to ask what do you have to say about assassin's creed shadows? It seems like people are debating about yasuke's historical accuracy.
Because the info the game used and that many who don’t follow history seem to believe has been fabricated. Yasuke did exist. That’s no issue. It’s that people believe he was some great warrior when he wasn’t. He was a spectacle. Japanese historians don’t even know much about him and are going by some documents written at the time. Those documents don’t mention anything about him being a great warrior. If that’s all that exists then where did Thomas Lockley get all this other info to claim his book is fact? It would’ve been one thing if Yasuke was an npc the character met instead of the main character. Plus a lot of the stuff seen in the game doesn’t make sense. Cherry blossoms wouldn’t be pink at the same time people are harvesting rice. Other items in the game didn’t exist yet

@@corylocke7754 there’s a difference between the story telling. For starters, Thomas Lockley stated his book as fact. Ubisoft followed that and said Yasuke was a strong samurai warrior. Tsushima was an actual event while the MC was fictional. Everything in the game was accurate with some added elements. All the other AC games had area appropriate and fictional MCs but then the one game that takes place in Japan we get a foreigner who was a real person but not the way as presented. Why didn’t we get a fictional MC like the other games. Yeah we got that njnja chick but she should’ve been the MC. Samurai don’t wear that armor out in everyday life. As I mentioned they put in things haphazardly. Tori gates don’t mark villages. They’re used for shrines. Ubisoft didn’t care. Why didn’t they add kamikaze pilots into it since they were adding other things that didn’t care. Japanese people who played the game pointed out how strange everything was in the game.
@@rylansato see I can understand some more of those but all I ever hear is people super mad they are taking liberties with a historical character, like he's been in shows and movies and stuff and it wasn't a problem then.

But on top of that, why would you be consistent up until now with having MCs from the area in which the game takes place? Why would they make the MC him of all people when they were all fiction before? Why did they choose the one foreigner of the time period to be a samurai and claim he was when he was never? Why wasn’t the MC Japanese? Ubisoft claimed we needed to be an outsider to look in to the culture but we don’t. We can be a Japanese character. Yasuke was better suited to be an npc just like he was in real life.

if i had to put my 2 cents, i would say atsu could be a retired onna-musha(retired because of the governmental reform); as for why she went to yotei...well she is hunting but what?? i guess that parchment that she caries has the nicknames of a group of thieves/murderers that ruined her life forcing her to get back in the role of warrior, searching vengeange
P.S: i really like that both jin and astsu play some kind of instrument, jin played a flute and atsu a shamisen
