    7mins 33 seconds in. Make sure you fit the metal shim and plastic sleeve the correct way on, Matts is correct. On stripping mine down, the damaged CV boot that had been replaced at an earlier time had the plastic shim fitted the wrong way around. I also washed my CV joint out of old grease. My previous 3 CV boots on the offside had rooted away over a 3 year period. My trusted garage of 20 years tried to suggest it was due to lack of use !! even though the nearside boot was still the original from 17 years prior. Each year they failed it on the CV boot and charged £100 to replace. This year prior to MOT I checked the CV boot and yet again, the CV boot had literally rotted. I suspect one of two thing. The CV boots my garage use are made of substandard rubber and just rot away or two, the grease they filled it with is the wrong grease, attacks the rubber CV boot from the inside out and causes the boot to rot. I am now using an OEM complete boot kit from FEBI which comes with its own grease. I will update this post in one year to see if it rots away like the three previous ones did over a 3 YEAR period, each one fitted yearly and the vehicle only covering 1500miles. I suspect its the local garage I use as I had a VW Sharan and they changed the clutch on it. New clutch was great, three weeks later gearbox whining and on draining the oil was full of metal - again I suspect they used the wrong oil or not enough and I had to scrap the car for parts as it would have cost more to repair than its value which is a shame as I had owned it from it being 18 months old for 15 years. Moral here is my trusted garage has been going for over 50 years, I am on first name terms with the staff but they still make mistakes and will not own up to it - I now try and fix things myself and thanks to people like Matt, I would rather try and do it myself, if I mess up then that's my fault but I cant lie to myself like the mechanics at my garage lie to me.

      "I can't lie to myself like the mechanics at my garage lie to me" True statement of the year right there!. This very same scenario is what got me into repairing my own vehicles. Good luck to you! Also, a tip for the future, you might have been able to save the Sharon with a used junkyard transmission. They're very cheap and all you have to do is bolt it in. If a car got scrapped because it got rear ended for example, the transmission is very likely to be fine.

      @@PeterB12345 Today - the garage lied to my son today when he MOT'd his Punto. They jacked it up to do the MOT at the non jack point, causing the sill to be crushed in a small section. My son came home and said - ohh the garage said you need to get this part of the sill reinforced as it gave way - rubbish I told him, look, they jacked it 3 inches away from the jack point ! - anyway I straightened it out and resprayed the sill but that's not the point. We all make mistakes, but don't lie and don't tell your customers to reinforce non jack points ! - what a load of bull. Told my son this is why you cant trust anyone, but you cant do a home MOT either. Yep, shame about my Sharan - good beast of a vehicle that took my family all over for over 100,000 miles - RIP.

    No matter how much I screwed the thread into the CV joint with the tool in place, the CV joint refuses to separate from the drive shaft. I then tried hitting the CV joint off but nothing. How come you make it look so easy ? I spent two hours with the tool on the shaft bolted in place trying to get the CV joint off - I now have a 3 wheeled car and stuck :(

      Sounds like it is being a nightmare for you. You may end up needing the whole drive shaft. Thanks for watching

      Hi Matt - right, me and my son worked out the physics on this. You do not need that gold coloured tool which I also purchased as so many videos show it being used. I removed the gold coloured tool. All you do is this if anyone is having difficulty.
      1) Do everything Matt did to strip the vehicle down to the point where you are ready to remove the CV joint. Dont hit the CV joint, Dont affix that gold tool.
      2) Put the car in 1st gear to prevent the driveshaft from turning.
      3) Re insert the bolt into the cv joint and turn it clockwise with a socket set. Then when it gets really tight, have a rest & a coffee !
      4) Put an extension bar onto the socket set arm so you have more leverage. With a friend, keep the CV joint parallel with the drive shaft. Eventually the CV joint wont swing around as the bolt you screw in will hit against the driveshaft.
      5) Keep turning the bolt clockwise - you are now putting pressure to force the driveshaft off the circlip that's on it that retains the CV joint on.
      6) Keep turning, dont be frightened, you wont break anything, eventually you will hear a metallic sound, that's the circlip giving way allowing the CV joint to come off drive shaft.
      7) You are done. Have another coffee and high five with your helper that you have succeeded.

    Good vid, but u did one mistake. Do not EVER repair under the car in car jack, put car in car stands, and car jack to support, safer.

    • @mechanicmatt871
      @mechanicmatt871  3 роки тому +1

      It was on axle stands, I don't work under a car with only a jack. They are under the subframe. I agree with you. It's the only way to do it. Thanks for watching

    • @mechanicmatt871
      @mechanicmatt871  4 роки тому +1

      Mechanics go under cars, although not usually barefooted. My feet were too far away from the CV joint to possibly drop the part on to my foot.
      I could have easily put on overalls and safety shoes, maybe even safety glasses too,
      The method of removing the CV boot remains the same.
      Thanks for your comment
