Completed this job today on a 2004 Allroad twin turbo. Absolutely could not have done it without your video. Used all the tips, was careful not to strip bolts, had some trouble getting the CV axle out and in, but eventually coaxed it into place. Did not have to remove the upper control arms and tie rod but if those areas are not bound up, it would make it a lot easier. Thanks a million.
Surprisingly easy. A bit of work to get the old one out, but quick to get the new one in. Thanks so much - I already had the brake job done when I noticed the leaking boot which the shop had flagged. Thanks a ton for putting this up!
You just saved me a ton of money, ordered the parts on line, 80 bucks for a decent quality axle and just put it in myself. Great video and thanks alot!!
" THAT was a lot easier than I thought it would be....." CLASSIC comment! ;-) Same story on my Audi A6..... the centre locating bolts cracked off much easier than I thought they would....... these german cars are still made out of high quality steel with bolts that just don't corrode..... UNLIKE certain other manufacturers cars I could mention(!) My CV joints calme with new bolts to install, which is ALWAYS good practice..... but, in my opinion.... there was nothing wrong with the old ones. Excellent video, presented by someone who clearly knows what he's doing. Top marks.
If you are in a northern climate, for sure do as he says and clean out those bolt heads. Use some household cleaning spray, like 409, use pick tool or an old fork, bend back all but one prong. Then spritz with water and use a small wire brush. And then tap in bits with small hammer. Sure takes 10-15 minutes, but if you strip one of the those bolts, that will make for way more work.
Worked just like the video said, you have to man handle the axle a little bit to get it in and out, the hardest part was getting the cover back on, thanks for the DIY video!!!!!
Thank you for sharing. This was extremely helpful. After following your procedure on a 2001 Audi A6 quatro, I found that disconnecting the upper control arms and tie rod, I was able to get better access to the axle and make this job much quicker. I hope others find this useful should they encounter clearance issues like I did. Although it sounds like it adds work, the assembly is pretty easy to work with and it will really save a lot of time on the over all job.
Very good. Tried to change CV boot kit but no matter how hard I tried I could not get the CV joint and shaft to separate so will have to replace the whole shaft with joints and boots.
Very helpful video thank you for posting I have tried to remove those 10mm bolts and they are so tight i can't get them loose can I use the air wrench instead of rachet
A big help with narration as you go and telling the specs like socket/bit size and torque. Well lit video too. Using it for my '99 Audi A6 wagon - Thanks!
just to avoid any possible headaches, if you have a B5, V6 manual. The passenger (right) side axle will *not* come out without disconnecting at least the upper control arms. No matter what position you turn the wheel in, or angles you use it will not come out. So unless you are comfortable with or confident they will come out cleanly, don’t attempt this. But the left side at least will go in and out no issue at all
I don't know how the hell you got the right side out so easily. I just did this on the same car this weekend after watching your video and having all this confidence that it would be a quick and easy job. this thing would not come out. I had to drop the lower front control arm just to articulate the hub for it to come out.
Im having a hard time getting the splines to clear the hub assembly no matter the way i turn the wheel on the passenger 2.8 1999 passat will i need to remove the control arms any tips thanks.
Great video, Thanks. If the CV joint is pulled out etiher from breaking/failing or being pulled out, rather than tapped out from the area were the bolts fit (as shown on video), the CV may have pulled out, and that will not go back in. You can feel around the inside (close to center of vehicle) rubber boot. If you can feel metal and the boot is distorted, then you may have to release a control arm as the CV joint is extended say 1 inch and that may prevent removal as shown in the video. The other thing is to rotate the inner part, it may fit back into the engine area better in a different position. The other option is to use a larger size punch and hit the center of the axle, if you are say 1/2 inch short that might be enough to move it. Last options, remove the rearward control arm at the ball joint and see if that provides additional room, and next is remove the tie rod end and have someone else pull the knucle.
Hello,I changed the end of the bar on. the Volkswagen Passat b5.5 and don't remember how many rotationi did when I took it out,you cand tell me how many rotation I should have done and maybe I changed thanks
I just looked it up on passatworld.com. it is indeed correct. I assume they give this torque spec because most wrenches don't go up to the actual 400 pounds.
themarine09 using a torque wrench on the socket, initially tighten the axle bolt to 140 ft lbs, then switch the axle bolt socket to a breaker bar (1/2" drive) (possibly with a cheater pipe/longer lever) and with the socket in the axle bolt and the breaker bar at the 9:00 o'clock position, tighten 1/2 turn until the breaker bar handle is at the 3:00 o'clock position. Make sure the socket bit is well inserted in the axle bolt and you don't wobble as you tighten down for this final 1/2 turn. Does that make sense?
Hi, I just have a quick question regarding compatibility on cv axles. I own a 06 Lexus GS AWD and need to replace my cv axle. Problem is those axles are almost impossible to find on the market currently. The 07 GS350 fits but the one I bought isn't AWD, will rear wheel drive axles generally fit AWD models, are they normally designed the same or a little different. I called the company I bought it from, one guy said it would the other said it wouldn't. Need to replace soon before it breaks on the road, any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you, Merry Christmas!
Please do not put aftermarket axles on a Passat or the whole vehicle Shakes while in Drive or reverse at idle, you have to replace it with the OEM axles, this guy found out the hard way and was probably wondering why his car was shaking really bad at idle after the aftermarket axle was installed.
Great video! Thanks,. I have the exact same car. Question: I bought the recommended axle from Autozone. When I put them side-by-side, the transmission side cv joint and axle shaft are the same length, but the hub side cv joint is about an inch shorter. I installed it and torqued it up fine. Obviously, the hub side cv joint expanded. Is that okay? Will it fail? I just drove it about 120 miles at 70 mph. Seems okay.
Does the car have manual or automatic transmission? The repair manual tells you have to loosen the upper suspension bolt. My car has a manual gearbox, can I follow the same procedure?
@@Stachlesss No, not for the right side. But I know the left is easy. The connection with the gearbox is more accessable and the axle should come out without losen other parts on the car.

the point he was trying to make is that there is no such animal. Torx bits come in "T" sizes. T1 through T10, T15, T20, T25, T27, etc.... The outer bolt needs a 17mm (1") hex bit socket. The inner bolts are 10mm triple square (M10).

Yes it will. Basically any b5-b5.5 passat(98-05) is exactly the same regardless of motor (1.8t, 2.8, 4.0 even 1.9tdi) or fwd or awd. The axles are all the same along with suspension. So if your car falls in these years this will work.
He wasn't kidding, be very careful with the 6m allen bolts on the sheild cover. I just stripped one and I know I'm in for hell of a time trying to come back from this mistake. 🤦
I got torn cv boot replaced(new boot kit) on front wheel of my 2003 1.8t passat 10 days back. Washed the car yesterday and sprayed water on the wheels. Now, when I back up with wheels turned, the Abs and esp light turns on and stays on. When I turn off the car and then start it again, the Abs and esp light goes off. Could the repair shop have messed something up or could it be that when I washed the car, some dirt got on the abs sensors that’s causing these lights to come on when I back up?

Check engine light came on with code p0491 and it failed C.A. smog test.
My mechanic wants me to change Combi valve and secondary air pump. I don't believe him, I'm not sure if he's trying to scam me?
Any feedbacks are kindly appreciated.
Will this same procedure work with a fwd 2002 1.8 passat?
Yes it will. Basically any b5-b5.5 passat(98-05) is exactly the same regardless of motor (1.8t, 2.8, 4.0 even 1.9tdi) or fwd or awd. The axles are all the same along with suspension. So if your car falls in these years this will work.
Grt vid, thanks !
He wasn't kidding, be very careful with the 6m allen bolts on the sheild cover. I just stripped one and I know I'm in for hell of a time trying to come back from this mistake. 🤦
its 12 point inverted... looks similar to torx
sometimes called triple square 12 point bit
thanks
I got torn cv boot replaced(new boot kit) on front wheel of my 2003 1.8t passat 10 days back. Washed the car yesterday and sprayed water on the wheels. Now, when I back up with wheels turned, the Abs and esp light turns on and stays on. When I turn off the car and then start it again, the Abs and esp light goes off. Could the repair shop have messed something up or could it be that when I washed the car, some dirt got on the abs sensors that’s causing these lights to come on when I back up?
dirt, just clean the sensors
excellent

DIY Auto Repair Videos my car went of a ditch ...and now it won't go reverse or drive or anything...could this be it a cv axle?
What is the torque specs for the heat shield please
Obviously it's a German torque spec. Its Gutentight. 😋
I need an alternative solution to get the axle out. Those heat shield bolts are absolutely impossible to get loose on my car. Broke my tool :-(
I ended up having to disconnect the upper control arms and tie rod like someone else mentioned.
@@Uncommonsensetoo How hard was it to get the tie rod disconnected? My upper arms are OK because I changed my air shock 6 mo ago.
@@aantalisg It was not difficult at all. I spent WAYYYYYY too much time trying to get that heat shield off. Once I gave up on that and went for the upper control arms and tie rod I was done in about 1/2 hour.
@@Uncommonsensetoo I got the shield off easy and the six M 10 boots. But spent 90 min getting the axle out and back in again. Retrospectively I should have at least tried the tie rod. When I do the passenger side I’ll do it your way. Thx.
@@aantalisg Oh, I did not think the driver side had a heat shield. I looked and did not see one. I replaced the passenger side axle. I am glad it worked for you eventually. Yes, it is pretty tight so loosening the the upper control arms and tie rod made it pretty easy to take the axle in and out.
That half turn sketches me out
Thanks man, shop wants to charge me $300 to change it, I did it in 1 hour, pretty sure mechanics do it in less than 30 minutes and want to make $300 just for half hour, thats way too much, thanks for the video.
I dont know what im doing wrong but the new one will not go in no matter what i do
The way you removed that axle would definitely damage the ABS Sensor.
Negative.
@@D3XT3RDEMO16 Yes, could damage it. It's a good idea to back out the ABS sensor a few millimeters to help avoid that.
2.7
Also make sure you buy a new 17mm hex bolt from the dealer
Idiot. Dont buy anything ever from the dealer
Bullshit, this is not as easy as these guys make it look, it's tight and probably have to remove steering knuckle and possibly the pinch pin, have a local pro do this and save the headache and backache. Have done this twice on same car, NO FUN
You any kin to Daffy Duck
full of crap its physically impossible to get that out or he has the wrong one which is the short one
