Fictional Dan, like real Dan, usually has existential crisis issues, contemplating the fragile nature of life and, the suffocating, inescapable loneliness that is the price of consciousness. He's also a bit dependent on fictional Phil, the man he loves and spends almost every day with and has lived with for the past four years, who cuddles him through the worst days, when his mind threatens to overwhelm him. So, even the idea of Phil dying would scare the fuck out of him, and that's where character development comes from. Also writers are dicks.
