I saw this 18 times in a theater in San Francisco. I took a trip to the Balkans, but couldn't get into Ukraine or Bulgaria back in 1967. Parajanov was in a gulag in Siberia nearly 5 years for making this masterpiece movie. The print has faded a little, but these clips are vibrant. Thank you for posting. I am teaching Verbovaya Doshechka, playing as background here to my summer group. If you haven't seen the movie it is on UA-cam. SEE IT!
@@nataliadyuk1464 I see now and am glad to be corrected. I had remembered Parajanov being Georgian and making films in Soviet times that were controversial for reviving pre-Soviet culture, assumed it was his own ancestral something or other. Shadows.. is Ukrainian tale. Pomegranates is Armenian. Another one is Georgian and then Azerbaijani?
This movie is a worlds classic, but unfortunately, only film and art critics know about it. and of course, students of film studies in Universities. This and other Ukrainian genius pieces of art were or forbidden or forgotten during the soviet occupation.
God bless Paradjanov's soul; a true poet he was.
