Required viewing for anyone teaching themselves to draw! Gesture drawings are a foundation exercise that trains the artist to identify the essential movement and physics in a depiction of a body. Notice how Jess nails down the relationship of the shoulders to the hips- usually tilted in opposite angles- right away with just a simple mark or two. We also noticed that Jess doesn't cheat on her time limit, because that's a huge part of getting the benefit of the exercise. Can't wait for part 2!

Just from listening to your encouragement, and comparing that with many of the comments, I think it's safe to say that drawing is very much a mind set. The more positive, and open your mind is, the freer, and happier one will be with the results. And, not just in drawing, either.

I have never practice drawing people that much because it is a process that intimidates me but this really was so fun and I cannot wait to do it again soon! The biggest challenge for me was making the hands and feet not look so wonky haha!

Just following you draw immediately improved my figure drawing skills! I'm stuck in a rut recently where I don't have any improvements at all and this video shows that I'm doing my practice the wrong way.
I'm currently doing Figuary - daily figure drawing for every day of February. I make so much progress when drawing daily, the habit is the hardest part for me. For others that might also find it useful: Habits don't have to be perfect. You can miss a few days or weeks, just keep coming back!

Dear Jess, the 3 minute sketching page was so amazing! All of them look wonderful! You are truly talented! Anyway I was thinking that maybe you could consider selling it as a poster and or postcard! Some of my favorite illustrations are the messy, sketchy ones! You are one of my favorite artists and watching your videos makes me so happy! Your voice is so calming and I love watching your videos to get inspired. You just make my day. ❤❤❤🥰
Your videos have that thing of making me feel like I'm back in art school. You have an interesting voice that's rather encouraging me to want to try out new exercises I never thought were necessary but here I am pencils and paper out ready to get down to business. I really enjoyed this video. Thank you 🙏
This really really helps, you know. The way you do the gestures and take sooo much interest not only in this, but everything you draw is just amazing.... (and I am gonna try this in my sketchbook, BTW...) loved this part one. lots of love and hugs to ya... The best Jess ❤️...
This was a super inspiring video. One of the things I struggle with is actually putting pencil to paper. I'm terrified of "ruining" my sketch pads, and I need to keep reminding myself that sketching is what a sketch pad is for.
If budget is even a slight issue, it could be adding to the terror. For sketches like this, I've found a ream of printer paper to be much more absolving than a sketchbook.
I use a cheap, spiral-bound sketch pad, as it gives me the option to tear out the sheets without 'ruining' it. Also, yes, printer paper is good too! That first mark is always the hardest.
I absolutely adore your videos. I am venturing into the world of art and design, I have applied to college and your videos inspire me everyday to keep going with producing a portfolio! Just showing everyday to create something and make time has helped me so much.
You inspired me to try this for the first time. Well... let's say it went on one hand worse than I hoped but on the other hand better than I feared. And so I will call it a success - especially as I have a page now to compare to what I can/will draw in about a year's time. Thanks for this great video and I am looking forward to the next one.

although I'm not a professional artist (actually I'm a pro at procrastinating), something that helped me a lot and maybe helps people who are doing their first figure drawing right now is drawing first the line of action or a shape that brings together all the image (like a triangle or trapeze), it helps me to know that everything has its place and it made my drawings go faster for sure
Your choice in music is the most important as well helps you get in the zone and let loose but you as well as a instructors you voice is very soothing and that veaw wow you are so blessed to have a veaw like that morning coffee and to draw darn you got it but thank you for sharing and come on guys give this lady a hand she's awesome all you have to do is have a open mind thank you miss have a blessed day ❤😊

Love the figures you found. Also would love a man's form or a cat or some large bird. Maybe a Part 3? Thank you!
Wow Jess. You are such an amazing teacher. Binge watching your videos ( new subscriber) and getting so much value and inspiration from them. Thank you!
I love you're videos Jess!! I do art on my iPad and not really so much on paper. But that's because I mostly paint with acrylic. I absolutely love how you sketch so flowy and capture the pose in one minute.
Truly needed this kind of tutorial because fundamentals are more important in drawing lessons. Your are as amazing as always ❤️. Can't wait to see part 2 lots of love and happiness to you ❤️
Truly educational and reminder for a tease to the mind that can't stop seeking perfection as you said. I also find shading into form of value works to a much fun process. Watching you always puts me to pause whatever I was doing to learn this beautiful basics.
Thank you so much for making this video. I always struggle with drawing humans, this was really helpful to let loose and focus on the line of action and major shapes rather than going for detail. Had a lot of fun. Thanks to you Jess I'm filling out my sketchbooks. Waiting for part 2 🎉🤩
Wow, Jess! Such an amazing surprise when you mentioned the comment, especially hearing this while I was drawing alongside the video ❤️ It literally brought tears to my eyes!☺️ Before drawing the first pose I had no idea how to start, but little by little fun replaced fear and the poses started looking better and better! Thank you again for amazing content, it's been a while since I haven't drawn so much in such a short amount of time!
Thanks Jess for this video! It was a serious challenge to loosen up. But after lots of frustration I got a bit looser and enjoyed this practice very much! Can't wait for part 2!
Hi!! I was really struggling to get motivated to practice gesture drawing, because I was really nitpicking the details (and got mad at myself for not doing a great job). Thanks to this I challenged myself to let go. I noticed that I enjoyed the process of practicing much more this way, so thank you so much for putting your content out there

Part 2.
Love the figures you found. Also would love a man's form or a cat or some large bird. Maybe a Part 3?
Thank you!
Thanks so much!! Amazing!
Wow Jess. You are such an amazing teacher. Binge watching your videos ( new subscriber) and getting so much value and inspiration from them. Thank you!
Your videos are always inspirational, I always grab my sketchbook whenever watching one of you videos. Keep it up!!!
Thanks so much!!
I love you're videos Jess!! I do art on my iPad and not really so much on paper. But that's because I mostly paint with acrylic. I absolutely love how you sketch so flowy and capture the pose in one minute.
Awesome! :) Thanks for watching

Truly needed this kind of tutorial because fundamentals are more important in drawing lessons. Your are as amazing as always ❤️. Can't wait to see part 2 lots of love and happiness to you ❤️
Thanks! :D
Truly educational and reminder for a tease to the mind that can't stop seeking perfection as you said. I also find shading into form of value works to a much fun process. Watching you always puts me to pause whatever I was doing to learn this beautiful basics.
Incredible! Thanks for watching!! Hope you enjoyed
Thanks!!
Thank you Jess, that was fun.
Awesome! :) so glad you enjoyed
Wow! Your art tips are the best!!! ☺Thank you for sharing, Jess!!

Amazing! Thank you so much for your support!! :) Have a lovely day :)
Thanks Jess for this video! It was a serious challenge to loosen up. But after lots of frustration I got a bit looser and enjoyed this practice very much! Can't wait for part 2!

Thanks for your teaching how to practice ... please make many videos like this...👍👏🌺
Awesome! thanks! Hope you make it to part 2!
Hi!! I was really struggling to get motivated to practice gesture drawing, because I was really nitpicking the details (and got mad at myself for not doing a great job). Thanks to this I challenged myself to let go. I noticed that I enjoyed the process of practicing much more this way, so thank you so much for putting your content out there
This video is great! I’m starting with the one minute exercises for awhile before I get to the longer ones only because my proportions are out and I need more practice loosening up. I was looking for you on skillshare but couldn’t find you, so this video came at an opportune moment 💞
That's awesome!! I hope you enjoyed
