No hate but you can't be lecturing people being so out there.
@@TAKE_BACK_BRITAIN Just sayin'
The irony is the dynamic range in the original makes it sound far ‘louder’
I got a nagging suspicion this person didn't bring the volume back up after compressing the crap out of it
the irony is that you can change the volume... back in 1994 they still used records/vinyl so they didn't need to digitalise the music. therefore, music has NO form of compression whatsoever when it's embedded in literal wax, whereas, digitalised music either comes in lossy or lossless compression depending on the audio quality. which obviously means you'll lose some data when listening to it digitally..
Dynamic tracks sound more open too. Compression is probably the most abused yet underutilized and misunderstood audio tools of all time.
@@swaggypanda1808 two completely different kinds of compression my dude. Sounds to me like you're talking about data compression (the lossy data types like MP3 that have their bits "compressed" to save file space). The video is about dynamic compression, which is making the loud parts of the song quieter, so you can turn everything up again and make it louder without clipping. Dynamic compression has been a thing almost as long as electric audio has been a thing. It just didn't get so abused until the early 2000s.
@@swaggypanda1808 ... what? So if i use an analog compressor to record something, then press it into a vinyl, it wont be compressed? come on, think with your head.

That would be terrible
When today is 50 years ago... Hello from future:) Yes, we still listening Nirvana)
The thing is... even back when this video came out, any decent sound engineer wasn't just putting a limiter on a track like this - besides regular compression and limiting there was usually multiband compression and a loudness maximizer (which wouldn't give you digital artifacts that you hear in this video). Sure you lose some dynamic range but whether that's a good or bad thing totally depends on the genre and specific song. Also nowadays this is often done with (ai) resonance suppressors and dynamic eqs before compression which can give tracks a dynamic feel even through all that compression and limiting
Yes compression got better over the years, but just because a shit looks like gold doesn’t I would want to buy it.
@@abdo-dr1tu so you're making a blanket statement about compression in the mastering track? It's always shit?
@@abdo-dr1tu also my main point wasn't even about how compression got better over time lol
AI resonance suppressors - you mean like soothe/Gullfoss? If so, I wouldn't say they necessarily give the "dynamic feel" or help to increase perceived dynamic range, so I find this example to be kind of strange.
@@user-br9th4ei6v yes soothe and gulfoss but there are other ai assisted dynamic eq/multiband compression plugins (that all have similar ideas but work differently) on the market. The idea is that the overall volume is capped and controlled by compression/limiting but different areas in the frequency spectrum are constantly reacting to the audio and pushing and pulling so it creates spectral dynamics so yes it gives it a "dynamic feel" - I say that in quotes because it's up for interpretation and these plugins won't affect the overall dynamics

Someone needs to recreate this 'If Smells like Teen Spirit was released in 2021' and just compress the absolute holy crap out of it.
As this weirdly just popped into everyone's recommended, we are obliged to make a 2021 version
If you don't know what's going on I'll explain. Sound engineers started making the loud parts quieter and the quieter parts louder so that everything is equal volume. Once everything is equallly balanced they turn everything up to make the song "louder". In reality different instruments should be at different volumes as they naturally would be in real life.
Nice explanation! You would prefer the older version then, right?
Just making sure I understood what you said
@@eine_v I prefer the older version personally.
@@ADSaaron Me too but everyone is entitled to their opinion, however if most people out there don't care/can't tell the difference (or both) then it would make sense to let the music have its natural dynamics no?

And this was uploaded ten years ago. Please pay attention.
As “outdated” this title may be, this video’s point is incredibly important regarding sound mixing. It’s especially a problem found in formats like CDs and digital shit like that is a reason why the vinyl revival happened.
One must put great care not to bring loudass compression that ruins the attitude of the audio which, as one critic puts it, “prevents the music from breathing”.
Not actually. Over-compressed songs are a consequence of bad remasters influenced by the 2000's and early 2010's bad mastering techniques.
Excessive dynamic compression has nothing to do with CD or 16-bit (lossless) Digital Audio, since the 16-bit format (which the CD is based on) can cover a wide dynamic range. Extreme dynamic compression is just "2000's music producers bullshit" (and when considering the wide dymamic range of 16-bit PCM audio, in the end it sounds like a paradox).
@@Canal_em_Vazio Agreed. Wide dynamic range has been available for years and pro (and amateur) digital recording studios have been working with 16, 24 and 32 bit depths with sample rates going up to 96 (and even 192) kHz for some time, though many plugins, CPU's and storage would struggle/not work at these higher rates.
Waves plugins, in particular, have been heavily abused in the loudness war - their L1 Ultramaximizer is generally regarded as the primary culprit, making it waay too easy (1-3 clicks) to flatline the entire waveform to virtually 0dB, if you so wish. The big driver to the L1's use is in record/CD stores where the whole war was about making a track/album much louder for the potential purchaser compared to a non-maximized track. Of course, this won't work on radio - their airtime compressors would nullify the L1.
During mixing, throw in the pro studio's 'real' autotune editor - Celemony's Melodyne (does waaay more than adjust note pitches!!), quantize every track, etc etc. Finally, get Simon Cowell to 'sponsor' you, lol, and...well...you get the picture.
Is music currently(!) dead? - no, but we appear to be racing to get there. A generation of youth have already been indoctrinated to accept mimed crap as their listening choice. Way too many comments here don't help that viewpoint, unfortunately.
Audio engineer here. The dynamic range of any track, as well as anything else about the track, depends on what its purpose is.
If it's a recording of a performance of a symphony or something, then sure, don't compress anything, just make sure it's never clipping. But if it's something more like metal breakcore, a genre that basically entirely exists to be as harsh as possible, while still having some kind of rhythm, then lots of compression is definitely something you want.
Digital formats and vinyl have nothing to do with this, by the way. If anything, the progression of technology has allowed for more dynamic range than ever before.
Vinyl made a comeback because of it’s large art and collectability, most new vinyl collectors aren’t really in it for the sound quality
To be fair, you could also compress audio on a vinyl. It all depends on the mastering, that is, if there's any. Most recording studios nowadays like to peg the VU meters on their mixers, hence why a lot of modern music sounds like garbage.
13 years ago we got baited into learning about audio compression

Because the high frequencies get buried under all other. Basically when all frequencies are equally loud it will lower the overall volume because you looee dynamic range.
