It's... hard to listen to this song sometimes.
On one hand, its tune holds pleasant memories of my childhood, where I would see both grandparents and my grand uncle regularly, I had lots of friends that I saw every day in school and out, and I felt disconnected from the many problems of the world.
However, it also reminds me of how long gone those days are. How many of my old friends have moved away after college, how my grandparents and grand uncle aren't with us anymore, and every time I turn on the TV or open my web browser there's just more depressing stories of how cruel the world can be.
I listen to this and wonder if I'll ever know that kind of joy and peace again.
Everyone's experience is different but here's what happened to me. In small moments I do feel that kind of joy and peace but they are fleeting. Which is sad except what you get as a replacement is a more complicated happiness. It isn't pure, it isn't binary, and it sure isn't simple. But that's the joy; the more you develop the more you are able to experience unnamed feelings, unique and/or niche happinesses, undescribable moments. Like when you watched a movie as a kid and you enjoyed it because it was funny and interesting to watch. But when you return to it as an adult you understand the themes, character's motivations, metamorphoses, etc. The happiness you felt as a kid is happiness designed for a kid. So that simply means you must find your happiness as an adult, (or teenager depending on where you're at). And adult happiness is not the unconditional nirvana, but the ability to dive very, very deep into the many worlds that everything, everything, has. For me at least.
May peace be with your grandparents and uncle.
This is the definition of nostalgia
@@carboyCA This is the most beautiful thing I've read in a while.

@@carboyCAGreat way to put it. Your worldview should be commonplace.
Let me be honest: You won't know that kind of joy and peace again. But you will know a different kind. And it will be just as beautiful, just as powerful, as the feelings you once felt, only different. In some cases your new joy and peace will even be better, because now you're old enough to appreciate it.

It's amazing how consistently nostalgic these things feel for so many of us, early nights out in shopping centers, excited about the small stuff, there's a purity in these feelings that is so distant and yet so close, comfortable and welcoming, like a memory in which you just barely can't quite get the details right. I remember playing Wii and Ps2 games at my grandma's house, things like even being in high-school seemed like ages into the future, I could look at teenagers and think of them as fully grown adults, UA-cam was so simple and so much easier to enjoy, overall I could just live and not worry about what the future holds. I was truly in the moment, and so now my life becomes all a big chase to have this feeling once again. Maybe I'm wrong in trying to chase it, maybe the only way to achieve this again is to just let go, but it's hard to tell. Who knows.

The eel in this level felt so much scarier than it actually is when I was a kid that it made me afraid of underwater levels till I was 12 or so. I remember a underwater level in Super Mario Galaxy and asking my brother to get through it for me cause I was scared some shit was gonna get me underwater. Eventually got over it and now I find these levels and music eerily relaxing.
I get a strange sensation listening to this. It takes me back to childhood. But in both a safe and melancholy way. Something of loneliness, but also that of full company.
I am told I was a pretty wild kid, but when I dream about moments from my youth. It feels like they're materialized as this very song. In those flashbacks, it seems I don't have a voice, only perspective. If that makes sense. Veiweing my family and environments in silence from my younger pov. Despite the actuality of those times not being silent. The feeling is so hard to describe with words, but this perfectly encapsulates what I feel. It's almost as if im longing to go back to simpler times and never grow up. Though that feeling of inescable fate as time moves forward still lingers. It all feels so somber yet it brings me an eerie joy. Of course it's all familiar. It happened to me, but it feels warmer, or as if I'm experiencing it all for the first time. The good and bad things.
When I was a toddler I played Mario 64. My dad had introduced it to me. While I wasn't very good at the game, I had lots of fun. I'll never forget the level where you collect red coins underwater while this plays in the background. I remember loving the song so much that I spent a good while just swimming through over and over again. I remember my step-mom sitting beside me watching quietly with her hand on my back. I felt so happy. This song brings that memory back to me.
Fast forward years later to high school. I had a swimming unit. I wasn't a good swimmer so I stayed in the beginners section for the entirety of the unit. My teacher told me I was a fine swimmer, but I was too scared and anxious about going to the deep side of this large pool. Until one Friday when we had freetime, I decided to join some friends who were diving. It was only allowed on the far end of the pool where it was 20ft or so deep. Somehow I mustered up the courage to swim there and then try a dive. I'll never forget my first jump into the deep water. A loud entry of splashes until I went to the bottom and then... silence. My eyes were closed when I jumped in and I never open my eyes underwater, but I'm glad I did this time. As I'm swimming up to the surface, it's quiet. Nothing and no one in sight due to the depth. Except for the dark blue of the water and the light at the top. Almost exactly like the picture in the thumbnail. No sounds of the other students or teachers. Only the muffled water and my faint heartbeat. Me slowly drifting to the top with calm strokes. Until I eventually get closer to the light and emerge to do it all again. It was so peaceful. I felt so much grace. And I don't know why. But I love the way it felt in the moment. Just floating in a gelatin of water feeling weightless, yet being heavy was so surreal. I recall that moment often. This song and thumbnail adds to that nostalgia.
Honestly that moment underwater was as if I had died without actually physically dying. Incredible experience.
I know I spewed a bunch of words, but I find it so fascinating how this unintentionally brings me so much bliss, joy, sadness and comfort. Everything under the happy and sad spectrums wrapped in one. Like going to sleep and dreaming nothing. A liminal space in audio form.
This sounds like someone going around to places from their childhood and remembering old friends who are no longer there with all the good and bad times before moving on by either going to college, moving away, or accepting what little time they have left and being happy with their life full of joy
Ya know, I find it fun and little depressing to the think about all the kids I used to hang out with when i was younger, specifically the ones I knew because I just met them at chunk e cheese and decided to hang out with them because my best friend left early. It was so easy to just play with some random kid. Now I wonder we’re that random kid is today. Maybe I’ve walked past them at some point recently, and I probably wouldn’t even know because their much older and I barely remember their face..
This paints an image in my head of my elementary school but it’s empty and I’m just walking around it as an adult

The day I finally beat Super Mario 64 for the first time was on September 22nd, 2020. My first time playing it as part of the 3D All Stars collection. I was so happy, and I was living with my grandma at the time.
Unfortunately, that day would be the last day I'd see her alive, as she would be taken to the emergency room, only to die the next day from a fatal heart attack.
This song was one of my favorite songs from Super Mario 64. And every time I play it, I remember my grandmother.
Maybe she's swimming in Dire Dire Docks in the afterlife...
My condolences
That went from 0 to 100 in 2 seconds jesus. Im sorry for your loss.
I got my copy of 3d all stars that day.
My condolences. Hugs
Sorry for your loss ⚘
Listening to this at full volume with headphones and just closing your eyes while listening strangely feels so nice
This actually makes me feel like I'm a kid again, booting up this game just to listen to this song. Thanks for reminding me of good memories and reawakening nostalgia I forgot I still had 💗
It's 1997, you and your buddy swore you'd stay up all night.
You're 2 large bags of Skittles, 3 bags of chips, and 1 gallon of ice cream deep.
Its 3am, you're on the air mattress, you're fading in and out of sleep. Just straight vibing
Please stop
Now I’m gonna cry
@@maikerutv3383 Why would that make you cry ?
@@PsychoBackflip Nostalgia
I would probably throw up from all the junk food 😂
@@PsychoBackflip well if you have to ask that you wouldn’t understand would you
I have never drowned so peacefully in my entire life
Edit: thanks for all the likes
@Hero Yasumi I see your new here
Ayo wtf?!
✊😞
Complete contrast to the sonic drowning theme
If the people on the titanic had this they would have no problem dying....Yep I’m going to hell
I find myself coming back to this video every so often. Something about slowing the music down and pitching it up creates this oddly serene yet still ominous feeling. This song triggers so many core memories: summer vacations with friends, cozy winter nights alone, spending an afternoon with friends just hanging out. The music is almost acting like the waves as the nostalgia washes over me. It's a bizarre, yet comforting feeling
Koji Kondo is a genius. I've never played the N64 version of this game but I love this song nonetheless and I'm glad other people have fond (or not) memories of this song while playing the game.
The irony being, as comforting as I find this song the idea of being this deep under water scares the living shit out of me, lol.
Why would you choose to focus on that to introduce the unwanted idea into the already prefered comfort you're in ?
Love this song way too much, amazing work.
@The Multiplex channel 😐
STOP BEING EVERYWHERE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
@The Multiplex channel plot twist: that was a set-up trap
Did it appear in your recommended too?
oh hey there
This gives me...very specific feelings and thoughts. Just picturing myself as a small child, gently floating down into a shallow sea full of the clearest of blue waters. I can't hear anything but this gentle song, and all feels right with the world. It makes me feel both happy and sad at the same time. Kind of interesting how a piece of simple media editing can deliver such complex thoughts and feelings, but that's the beauty in life.
It's always "sad" but also "good"
Damn, this is a masterpiece.
POV: You are Mario swimming underwater.
I just imagined swimming over Jolly Roger Bay towards the cave. The water is cool, but not cold. I see the eel moving around in the sunken ship. The ship has much more green moss on it, and the moss itself looks like you could touch it and it would be soft. Calming sounds of bubbles, the clams shutting their mouths to guard the red coins, the relaxing underwater version of the coin sound effect paired with the satisfaction of gaining air whilst collecting it....
i like mario 64
@Writter Gamer according to my calculations only 4 mario games are better than super mario 64 and i myself only prefer 2 games over it.
BLOOP BLOOP BLOOP *Bowser laughing*
@@Andres-vj2ws oof
**POV: You're Mario quickly running out of breath underwater
"Huh, so this is how it all ends? Always thought it would be the cancer... Life is funny like that"
you smile at the cosmic randomness of it all and, closing your eyes, you drift away
i have a great fear of the ocean but i only get that feeling when my brain decides to provoke it this makes me feel at ease knowing that sharks wont bite unless attacked or unless if you look like a seal it is hard to describe it is just comfort
That is... That is PERFECT!
Man this is such a good track. I remember calling Nintendo's service number back in the day. I dont remember for what. But the hold music was this track. Man, way to keep you calm and relaxed while on hold!
Biggest scam ever was Nintendo's hints hotline. I'd rather have paid for phone sex, at least then you had the potential to climax. With Nintendo, all they do is blue ball.
@@scorpionwins6378 How so? I never used it myself but it sounds handy.
@@scorpionwins6378 I remember calling nintendo back in 2019 or so (I had been calling them quite a bit for some things I needed help with lol) and I asked if they could help with games because I heard about it, and they said no. Seems like it was a real thing at one point!
The hold track last time I called was the Hyrule Field theme from OoT. I like how their hold themes are N64 songs, cool that they acknowledge the classics, even if just for a hold theme.
@@TheSizzleDashYou realize they stopped doing game hints like that back in the 90s, right? That was primarily for NES and Super Nintendo
So this is what mario hears when I don’t get him to the damn surface in time
At least drowning is a relatively easy way to go
I always thought he heard, "DINGDING DINGDING DINGDING DINGDING" in his final moments! :P
except in the wrong key
Are you sure? I could've sworn he always heard Bowser tauntingly laughing at him as he drowns to death.
Sonic's drowning theme has you tripping balls and/or meth, while this drowning theme soothes you and puts you to bed. Huh.
I think it would be really cool to own waterproof earbuds that work underwater so I can listen to this while I’m swimming
This song makes me happy and sad at the same time, the memories of me playing, having my dad helping me with the levels, he was such a hero to me, now we don't talk anymore because things he has done, i miss the old times, i miss being happy.
This is simultanieously one of the most relaxing yet incredibly unnerving things I've ever heard
Bro I have never felt more chill in my life, I listened to this with headphones, 10/10 would recommend.
If you have surround sound available headphones, youll practically become the embodyment of chill
@@Emu_calli True dat.
This song always gave me the vibes of interior hotel pools without windows
This is the musical representation of the word "liminal"
(Edit: Thank you Rainbowforce5!)
this is one of those videos, the kind that is only recommended to you if you're the main protagonist of your story
that makes me feel a lot better about life, thank you.
i know exactly what you mean!
What do you mean
Yea it reminded me of that too!
It's so beautiful. Really brings out the sonority of Koji Kondo's music.
…sonorosity?……euphony?…
the best version of this song, the best remaster. literally.
this makes me feel so calm yet so nostalgic to the past. it’s kinda sad as this represents to me the passing of time and our memories.
