GREAT, GREAT REACTION!!!!!!!!!!! to one of the most ICONIC songs ever.
This is called blue-eyed soul. These guys were the best. Bobby Hatfield with his beautiful tenor voice & Bill Medley with his deeper voice. They were magic together. And remember this is done live. No auto-tuning crap like today. And the songs had meaningful beautiful lyrics. Some other great songs are "(Your My Soul) & Inspiration", "Just Once In My Life", "Ebb Tide", "Rock & Roll Heaven" etc.
This is the most requested song and the most played song of the 20th century.
with good reason
From what I heard on a radio show years back, after a stage performance a man in the audience stood up and shouted "That was righteous brothers!" They adopted it as their name. The tall man with the deep voice is Bill Medley, the smaller man with the high voice is Bobby Hatfield.
"According to Medley, they then adopted the name "The Righteous Brothers" for the duo because black marines from the El Toro Marine base started calling them "righteous brothers". At the end of a performance, a black U.S. Marine in the audience would shout, "That was righteous, brothers!", and would greet them with "Hey righteous brothers, how you doin'?" on meeting them."
They are dressed the way entertainers dressed in those days … it was the way they showed their audience respect. Fashion started changing in the seventies and they changed with it … to open necked shirts and bell-bottoms. Their music evolved too …they started out singing raucous R&B and were well-known rockers on the west coast before being signed by Phil Specter, who gave them wall of sound ballads. Even they didn’t know why their voices sit so well together even though they sang at opposite ends of the musical scale, but their harmonies were unbelievably tight, i hope you sample more of their work … they were the hottest group in the mid sixties but continued singing together (with a couple of breaks) to full houses until Bobby’s death in 2003.
According to Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI), You've Lost That Loving Feeling was the #1 most-played song on radio and television over the entire 20th Century.
The sixties was a time when there was real talent, romance and class
Well said !
These guys are icons! This is so very beautifully done. Love your reaction!
Dude you look somewhat like the guy on the right! Same head shape. That's a compliment!
They were my first concert in the mid 60s. 💓
The epitome of blue eyed soul
Do you want to hear VOICES that blend? Check out Home Free! Also Barnsy and Farnsy --- Jimmy Barnes and John Farhnam from down under singing live Something is Wrong with my Baby. Jawdropping!
I was 12 years old when this song hit the charts. My Father had the album and I remember every word. This is back when music was sane and Men were Men.
Great song and great reaction!
Gotta do Bobby singing 'Summertime' live !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was from 1965 (I about fell off my chair laughing when you said, “maybe even the 1930s.”). Bill Medley with the deep voice is now 82 and still performing. Sadly, Bobby Hatfield died of a cocaine overdose in the early 2000s if I remember correctly. This song was featured in the original Top Gun movie in the bar scene where they were singing along with the juke box. Since you liked this one so much, check out their Soul And Inspiration next.
1964 It says it at the beginning of the video...either way, though, definitely NOT the 30s! It was a cocaine induced heart attack, a subtle, but significant difference.
@@Ididnotwanttojoin He apparently died in his sleep, hours before a scheduled Righteous Brothers concert. In January 2004, a toxicology report concluded that cocaine use had precipitated a fatal heart attack. The initial autopsy found that Hatfield had advanced coronary disease.

@@bella-xp7qd Yup
Bobby Hatfield suffered from severe stage fright his whole life. Sadly, he repeatedly turned to alcohol and drugs to help him cope. They took their toll.
Timeless
ALL the ladies loved them and I mean ALL 🥰 Most played song in the 20th century. It was 1964. They were called ‘blue eyed soul brothers’
Try another 1960s blue-eyed soul singer, Timi Yuro. She once opened for Frank Sinatra, and Elvis came to see her, when she played Vegas. Look into "Hurt". "Make the World Go Away", "What's a Matter Baby", "She's Got you" or anything. You'll LOVE her.
Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley…truly a great musical duo.
The wonderful Righteous Brothers! Being a baby boomer, we fell in love these guys in 1964. I was in high school when they came out. I have their vinyl record albums and CD'S. I play their music in my car. I never get tired of listening to them. Too bad Bobby passed away! RIP Bobby! 💖 💖🙏🙏
Watch soul and inspiration by the righteous Brothers.
You may never see two singers more in tune and step with each other than Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield. Definitely give Unchained Melody a listen. Its only Bobby singing but it may be the most perfect live performance ever. Try to find the clip that includes Andy Williams talking to both of them so you can get a taste of their personalities.
He did say 12 seconds in that the only other song he’s done by them was Unchained Melody. I know what clip with Andy that you referred to and you’re right on the money with that observation. That is not the one that he reacted to though.
No two voices ever blended better together. No other duo more perfectly coordinated their pace, their stresses, their inflection. Perhaps most amazing is that in 1964 when they did this performance, they were only 24 years old.
Your comments are more thorough and well-expressed than other reactors I watch. The delight on your face made me smile. I try to imagine the wonder of hearing this magic for the first time. Thank you.
No thank you Paul means the world !! 😁
Ditto that Paul...this guy is a great reactOR!!
💙💙💙
you are my soul and my hearts inspiration would be you best pick next
It wasn’t only the entertainers that were dressed in suits and ties, regular people dressed this way too. I remember, as a little boy, going to a restaurant with my parents and two siblings, and we were dressed to the nines. Broadway shows we all dressed up too. It’s a show of respect for each other as a family and for others as well.
Live TV in the '60's. Spotlight guy misses his target.
Bill Medley, the one with the deep voice, did a duet with Jennifer Warnes for the Dirty Dancing soundtrack.
You got to hear that song.
I had the time of my life.
Guaranteed you'll love it.
I had the privilege of seeing them live once and they sounded just as good live as they do in the studio.
You should check out the Everly Brothers if you wanna hear more voice that blend beautifully together!!!
You have to watch Soul And Inspiration. Back in my days they were Awesome. Between them the Beatles, BeeGees and many more they sung love songs and No Autotune just pure Beautiful voices Love you channel. I’m 69 and love BTS. You need to check out their Grammy performance of Butter they stole the show We did have the best music when I was growing up
One of the best reactions I’ve seen to this classic. The were always referred to as “Blue-Eyed Soul”
Btw, this song was determined to be the MOST PLAYED song on the radio in the WHOLE 20th century.
Classic song❤
Great reaction to a cultural masterpiece. This song is probably best known in recent years as "the song from Top Gun", but it's been in a ton of stuff. To your questions, this performance was in 1964, and no, they weren't biological brothers. Bill Medley (deeper voice) and Bobby Hatfield (higher voice) had had a fan shout at them, "that's righteous, brother!" and the name stuck. Definitely timeless and amazing raw talent. Cheers.
Ahahaha no way that’s awesome 🤣🤣love that backstory!!!
Should check out Righteous Brothers - Rock And Roll Heaven (1974) a little bit later than this, but a great song.
"(You're My) Soul and Inspiration" must be done next. Another great song by this classic Blue Eyed Soul group!
Your reaction reminded me that you are a young man with an old soul who appreciates true talent! I say this because I grew up during the best music eras with decades of great original music. No music industry cookie cutter formulas for hit songs. Everything was about the melody, lyrics and the artists individually or as a group! Thank you for sharing and great reaction!
People back then had class...the way they dressed and the way they acted. Today...well...
this song was the most played song on the radio in the 20th century.....
They had a huge hit and they had not been broadcast live yet, many listeners and radio DJs thought because of the voices and name of duo that they were Black. On of there first really big bookings was at the famous black venue The Apollo Theatre. The all black audience was shocked when they walked out on the stage. Fortunately they quickly won the audience over!!!
Don't play it for me, sing it for me, vocal talent doesn't matter, I'm heart-warmed
That song was written for the Righteous Brothers… it was covered by quite a few artists after they released it.
Imagine the platters and all those groupes you are now discovering , let me say we had good music and so many awesome signers it was years of truely good vibes all around , we miss this kind of clean romantic and cosmic times
From 1965, I was 13-14. This was played on the radio all day long. Everyone knew all the words.
Righteous Brothers was always 2 Not Brothers, a DJ on an R&B station said "That's Righteous brothers!" after hearing them the first time.
SUCH a great timeless song! Thank you Michael for playing & reacting to it! The Righteous Brothers were even before my time a bit, but that song became our 'Bar Anthem' lol....always always loved it and a friend and I would sing it to every guy sitting at the bar, then usually all the people there would join in. Great great memories, thanks again! 😊♥
Beautiful song that never gets old. Enjoyed your reaction!! 😊
Thanks Debbie !!! 😃
Oh yeah…..so righteous! Yes, dude! 😊ROCK & ROLL HEAVEN, next.
The tall one is Bill Medley and the other one is Bobby Hatfield, Bobby Hatfield is the one that sang Unchained Melody. Back then, men and women dressed very respectfully.
Imagine i was a teen at that time , imagine the dances with the music of the time , they were honestly the good times , clean proper and a mam was a man and a woman was a woman , love what all around
Before Bobby sang Unchained Melody on the Andy Williams show they had a humorous chat with Andy, explaining how they got the name Righteous Brothers and Bobby tells him he sings Unchained Melody by himself. When asked why, Bill kiddingly says he didn’t think it would be a hit. In reality, they flipped a coin and Bobby won. That was great because Bill’s lower voice is not suited to that song.
It was the most played song in the twentieth century!
Early 60s they wore suits on tv and performances. Those were the days ppl respected audiences and entertainers!
Was out in 64. Bill Medley (deep voice) and Bobby Hatfield. One of the greatest duos ever. Dynamic Duo! Had many very good songs For once in my Life Little Latin Lupe Lu
Ebb Tide. They were on 🔥🔥 FIRE doing The Nightime is the Right Time. Bill Medley I believe is 82 still performing but with Bucky Heard. Bobby sadly passed in 2003.
This was a TV show at the time. This is my second favorite one of theirs, the Unchained Melody being my fav. Do a reaction with them doing "Soul and Inspiration". I watched a reaction with several woman watching this and you are right, when Bill sang, "Baby baby, I'd get down on my knees for you." To a person, they all melted. If it got played at that party you spoke of and they watched their girlfriends or wives, you can bet it would spin their heads around.
Blue eye soul :)
The man with the deep voice name is Bill Medly ,he is the singer for Dirty Dancing
There's nothing like to see your true reaction to these music videos and it is more valuable when you know music and appreciate it the way you do. I love to watch your videos. Thanks!
Thanks a million Willy !!!! 😁🙏
Watch thier other song and interview before the one you said has polished voice
The announcer asked them how they got their name and 2hy he got to sing this song
Quite funny
Song is unchained melody you'll get to see how good his voice is
Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍
They are not brothers, but they got the name when one gentleman said you cats are righteous
1965, I think. I was 2 years old. I'm fortunate to have heard SO much wonderful music within my lifetime. 60 years old, still adding bands as the generations and genres come and go. Music has a life of its own and seems eternal. It's beautiful.
Beautiful
Thanks viola!!! 😃🙏
Yes you are…..quit bragging lol
Blue Eyed Soul. They were fantastic with a ton of great songs. Yes that is how everyone dressed back then. They do Unchained Melody in the movie Ghost if you haven't seen it.
should check out Ronnettes "Be My Baby" next
The people on the back, one of whom was a young Cher" were called The Wall of Sound. It was specific to their producer at the time.
The people in back were not called the Wall of Sound. “Wall of Sound” was Phil Spector's production style, which used "More" of everything, heavy overdubbing &/or more than the typical number of musicians & back-up singers. Also, TV variety shows had their own musicians & back-up singers. It’d be highly unusual for a singer to bring their own & studio musicians didn’t travel with singers. They stayed in the studio, recording for other artists. So, while Cher did sing back up on the studio recording, odds are slim to none that she’s in this performance. Cher has talked about her time with Spector & I've never heard her mention doing a public performance of anything she sang back-up on.
@@wnsafford1854 cool. Thanks for the info. I was going off of what I'd been told which I guess was based on the studio version they dubbed over the live performance in the video.
Never knew Cher was in the background. Phil Spector was the producer. The Wall of Sound was great. It made this great song even sound better
@@wnsafford1854 I always understood that Cher is there, the top row last on our right.
1960's! NOT brothers. High tech mumbo jumbo, well if you don't consider Phil Spector and the wall of sound high tech. It's cute - back in the day that was high tech.
I was so lucky to finally hear them in concert at Celebrity Theatre in Phx. That was in the 1990's before Bobby Hatfield died. I will say they still had it and it was a great show.
Did you do a reaction to Unchained Melody? I am on the hunt to find out. That song ALWAYS gets the BEST reaction bc Bobby Hatfield could hit the HIGH notes! BTW, I am getting addicted to this channel. Great fun.
Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) ranked the song as the most-played song on American radio and television in the 20th century. In 2003 ranked #34 on the list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone - Wikipedia
Elvis would sneak in and watch their show. He invited them back to his penthouse to hangout with him and friends
Your so right Michael. Look at how they dressed back then. All class the way a man should look when performing. Just so you know this song was the most played song on radio and tv in the 20th Century. If you don’t believe me, Google it. The greatest duo of all time. Glad you like it. Try their songs Soul and Inspiration and Rock n Roll Heaven.
Hear, hear on the dressing dapper! It may just be my adoration for Twin Peaks & David Lynch, but I always thought it would be cool to go back to men in suits & dames in pencil skirts & bullet bras!😀😂 (as I type in my jammies lol)
Loved the reaction!♥️✌
This is 1964. Entertainers dressed for the occasion and so did the audience. They are not brothers. Bobby Hatfield is the tenor. Bill Medley is the baritone. Bobby Hatfield passed away in 2003 just weeks after The Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame. I was lucky enough grow up with this music. No auto tunes. Live performances were the norm. This was the most requested song of the 20th century. This was referred to as Blue-eyed Soul.
Never missed a beat.
That is what you call a timeless classic.
Love the Righteous Brothers. I would really like for you to also review the Everly Brothers song Let It Be Me
This is the most played (radio) song of the 20tth century. Sonny and Cher sing backup on this..... (before they got famous). Not brothers. Got their name from singing at black clubs in southern california. The local black marines said... "These brothers are righteous!"... and that's how they got their name. Song was produced by the famous 'wall of sound' producer Phil Spector.
Don't know how the story that it was a black club got started. It was just a plain ole club. Was it because it was called John's Black Derby? It's a hat, not a person. However, some black Marines from the El Toro Marine base in Orange county started going there when they heard some white guys were singing R&B. They liked what they heard and continued to go to hear them over the months they played there. Yes, the marines, especially one, started calling them righteous brothers.
Saw them with the love of my life Sharon in 1965 im San Diego at the Community Concourse. This id Blue Eyed Soul young man. Listen to Dluk & Inspiration, Brown Eyed Woman,Little Latin Lupe Lou,
This was before auto tune. They have just incredible voices.
ALL the good music was before auto tune.
Auto tune started in 1997, the worst thing that ever happened, it's fake it deceives those who attend concerts.
Imagine that …. Sounding THAT good in the days when cars still mostly depended on AM radio, and no such thing as auto tune!
Sooooo good. Check out Ebb Tide and White Cliffs of Dover.
It looks as though it may have been the '50's or 60's. I believe people used to dress more formally back then. I knew that back in the 70''s my sister and I would always have to have our dresses ironed and saddle shoes polished, etc. for school and our best dresses, camel hair coats, and dress shoes, dress socks with a hankie in each of our coat pockets if we had a doctor or eye doctor appointment downtown (San Francisco) or to one of our Grandma's houses (more my dad's mom - not that he was around anymore, or to the Club or any other restaurant, the ballet, etc.).
That was just the level of formality that was practiced.
We had our "play clothes " for the weekends so we could climb the trees and ride our bikes in the courtyard while our mom vacuumed, washed the windows so she could keep an eye on us.
That was a whole other day and time, but I must say that I, my sister and mom have always made sure that my sons were well dressed, well mannered and that I have, even over these years that I have supplied them with books of etiquette both in general and specifically for young gentlemen.
Brava, mom.
Thank You so much for your comment! How you do one thing..is how you do everything. Wonderful habits...and an appreciation for the characteristics of the genders.
Dude, it says "1964" right at the beginning of the video. HaHaHa They are not related in any way and, in fact, they barely knew each other in the beginning. They were introduced by a mutual friend. This video, by the way, is the studio version audio synced up to the visuals from a live performance on Shindig. You can hear the original audio in this compilation. ua-cam.com/video/y2E6UijOHek/v-deo.html
"The Righteous Brothers are an American musical duo originally formed by Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield but now comprising Medley and Bucky Heard."
Not brothers in the family relative sense. In soul, OH yes!
It's a beautiful piece of music and this version gives me goosebumps on my goosebumps. P.S. As an Edinburgh native I dig the hoodie (also an alumni of there).
you should check out bobby hattfield - unchained melody and summertime
Fun fact: 17yr old Cher was a backup singer in this song.
Cher is one of the backup singers ❤
One of those singers in the chorus was Cher. I believe she was 18.
Listen to Bobby Hatfield’s version of “Summertime” in black and white! And Bill Medley’s “I Just Want to Make Love to You”. You can here their much talked about soul! And why do you have a jar of mayonnaise on the back of your sofa?
You are correct. The look is way too casual today. I've always loved seeing a man in a suit and it was standard practice for performers back then. Being put together makes them look like they care. Men and women looked classy, and then the grunge look started setting in in the 70s.
They were called the
blue eyed soul brothers.
They were not related.
You need to listen to The Everly Brothers.
there is no other duet...
You should watch the live version of 'Unchained Melody' sung by Bobby Hatfield of the 'Righteous Brothers' from the 'Andy Williams' show. It is so much better than the studio version.
Have you tried doing s reaction to Kansas singing Dust in the Wind?
No would you recommend it? 😄
Try a song from the Platters. Or the Ink Spots.
One of the backup singers was a not so famous at the time " Cher ".
Try their "Little Latin Lupe Lou"
Two guys that can SING? Each has their strong and week points, as small as they are, but together they are the most amazing duo ever.
Weak points? What? It's weak not week.
Love to know what those weak points are since no one else can hear them.
@@Aurora-tp3dy I know, right?!
One of those backup singers is Cher. You should know who she is.
