1992 Belmont Stakes - A.P. Indy

- On New York's biggest and best day of racing in 1992, speed prevailed over mud at Belmont Park yesterday as Strike the Gold made a melodramatic return to his home track in a starring role. But it was A.P. Indy who won the big one, rocketing down the stretch in a power performance to snatch the 124th running of the Belmont Stakes in the final strides and win for the seventh straight time.
The colt, a 3-year-old son of Seattle Slew and a grandson of Secretariat, won by three-quarters of a length over the British import My Memoirs, who in turn had a neck over Pine Bluff, the winner of the Preakness. But nobody had a bigger payday than Pine Bluff, who earned $91,776 for finishing third plus $1 million in bonus money for the best overall performances in the three American classics: fifth in the Kentucky Derby, first in the Preakness and third in the Belmont.
But this was the day when A.P. Indy made the scene, and he did it before an enthralled crowd of 50,204 fans. He was forced to skip both the Derby and the Preakness because of a bruised hoof, but he raced the mile and a half of the Belmont Stakes in 2:26 flat, two seconds off the record set in 1973 by his illustrious grandfather. He matched the second-fastest time, set in 1989 by Easy Goer.

What a horse! Charlse said it best. Always look for the horse who keeps their head down. Second fastest time ever with another great horse Easy Goer. RIP champ.
With Seattle Slew being the father of AP Indy, you can
expect nothing less than heart and grit, just like Slew.
Same about his maternal grandsire, Secretariat.
Especially when his dam is Weekend Surprise who goes back to Somethingroyal twice.
AP Indy passed on today. RIP to a legend and a champion.
Apindy..verrygood
I have him in my Top 10 horses of all time both as a race horse and sire. I always look for the finishers and A.P. Indy was one of the best at it just like his daddy Seattle Slew, and his grandfather, the immortal Secretariat.
@@theearl1477 I have him as my number one North American dirt sire
RIP, champ. If that finish doesn't personify heart, I don't know what does...
A.P.Indy,a Belmont stakes winner, was sired by another Belmont winner (Seattle Slew) and grand sired by another belmont champ,Secretariat.A.P.Indy's daughter,Rags to Riches also won the Belmont Stakes in 2007.Rags to riches is the first filly to win the Belmont in 100 years and the 1st to win the belmont at a mile and a half. What a family of champions!
Thank you!!
elizabeth smith I beleive A.P Indy would have won the triple crown had be been healthy!

Greetings from Venezuela.
Loved the ABC CREW!!!! Dave , Jim , Charlse, Al!
A.P. Indy was part of the only three generation sequence to win the Belmont Stakes, his sire was Seattle Slew and he sired Rags to Riches . Slew won in 1977 and Rags to Riches won in 2007 .
Took a look at AP Indys pedigree. WOW!! Secretariat, Bold Ruler, Nasrullah, Princequillo, War Admiral, Man O War, Discovery, Buckpasser, Seattle Slew, Bold Reasoning, Turn-To, Sir Gaylord (Half Brother to Secretariat), Round Table! Good Lord what a horse!
Now that is a super horse!!!
We used to say "here comes the freight train" when he was flying down the stretch! It was like poetry in motion when he would win races. Superhorse Legend
Was sooo said to hear of A.P passing this year, his legacy will live on! RIP A.P you will be missed
RIP Champ! A legend has passed but will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace big guy. He was one of the all time greats.
The best ! He was smoken tall. Loved his looks also Rip AP. You will always be talked about.
My freshman year of college I had a $20 exacta AP indy over dance floor in the hollywood futurity. Indy beat him at an incredible 7/2.
Really enjoyed Jim McKay and Charlsie Cantey on these broadcasts back in the day, everything about the upcoming race had such a great feel to it, anticipating the race and even in the winners circle Jim had a way of cracking me up the way he would speak to the trainers, owners, jockeys…
In the winners circle here with the owner Jim says “oh we have an interpreter” the interpreter responds “I did already” and Jim responds “well, what does he wanna say?”
Miss him very much 😆
I loved Jim McKay too. A wonderful broadcaster with just the right touch.
AP Indy. What a horse. Love these old saces.
Loved being there to see Slew's son win the Belmont. Had Indy not been injured before the Derby, Slew would have sired a Triple Crown winner. Slew, of course, is my favorite horse of all time.
Such a magnificent racehorse & sire!
Still makes me cry! RIP AP Indy!
He had his daddy's dauntless, grinding style, matched with his grandpa's stride and running body position, like American Pharoah. There is no question in my mind that he would have won the TC had he not had to scratch from the Derby. All those babies came by their talent honestly!
Agreed.
His bloodline is crazy
Great horse!
The good old days those moments will never come back 😊
This was recommended to me after he passed away. RIP AP Indy
Talented, tough, professional racehorse....
RIP, Indy.
Slew was such a success as a sire that no matter what the other breeding is I always feel/felt that they got it from Daddy. Seattle Slew is my favorite horse of all time and after 3 phenomenal seasons on the track to think he gave almost another 25 in the breeding shed. I believe he still only stands second to Native Dancer as a sire.
I totally Agree. Don't forget Bold Ruler as a Great sire of influence!
I was 7 when he won derby. I just remember his name. SEATTLE SLEW. Great athlete
3rd you are forgetting about Northern Dancer considered the greatest sire of the 20th century all over the world
@@fklifter1 Hear, hear Northern Dancer!
@@4orrcountry People seem to forget Northern Dancer because he was Canadian Bred but over 75% of the horses have his name in there bloodline not once but 2 or 3 times and many of his sons were great sires too
RIP beautiful boy..You were loved by so many.... 31 is So Great!❤🏇
Super ride by Eddie.👏
Jerry was sure coming!
2:26 in the Belmont is a true sign of greatness. breeding all the way and the guts of a great horse!! He backed it up later at the Breeders Cup.
gaining revenge over Pleasant Tap in the jockey club gold cup
RIP A.P. Indy. Great race.
Yes! He was so easy to spot in every race he ran because of that distinct stride of his. I could pick him out in any race even if I didn't know what post position he had and without listening to the call. It was easy because of his style. And what a legend he became as a sire. One of my favorite horses all time. It's sad to know his breeding days are over, but he made such an incredible mark to the world of thoroughbred racing.
The only horse who is related closely to two great Triple Crown winners, his sire, Seattle Slew and maternal grand sire Secretariat.
A.P Indy was such a distinctive looking horse with his style of running. What a contributor he became to the breed. BRIAN
AP Indy had the perfect combo of genes. Seattle Slew, Secretariat, Bold Ruler, Princequillo, Nasrullah, Buckpasser, War Admiral, and Man O War! Talk about a royal pedigree!
Interesting to hear the praise about AP Indy's pedigree and Seattle Slew mentioned, I remember in 1977 the experts saying Slew was a fluke with a poor pedigree. I'm no expert but I always thought Slew was a hell of a horse.
@@chuckemeade he was the best to ever do it.
Why do you think he has more successful winners in his bloodline than any Triple Crown winner in history.
He was the only horse in 120 years to win the Triple Crown undefeated.
Beat Affirmed head to head
Simply brilliance
#RIPINDY Thank you for everything you’ve done for our industry... 💔❤️🏇🏾❤️💔🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 #LEGEND!!
Rest in peace A.P Indy you are a legend.
Wonderful horse! RIP AP Indy.
Rest In Peace old bro will always miss you champ.
I watch Elisa Wallace on youtube. She owns Munson Slew. Where have all the years gone. Rest In Peace big guy and thanks for the memories.
My 3rd Belmont Day....had the exacta four times....what a great scene ...the blue blood by Seattle Slew,& weekend surprise, by Secretariat...A.P.INDY.
AP Indy's Momma was a Blue Hen Mare. It Runs in the family, his maternal grand daddy's momma was a Blue Hen Mare too.
What horse! Thankful to have seen him race!
Loved being there and seeing him win!!! He didn't war dance like his daddy, but.....😊😊
God I love this horse..
Wish i could of been there .....
RIP AP Indy ... my beautiful Prince......
AP INDY lives on through his descendants like Pulpit and Tapit. He also sired another Belmont winner, Rags to Riches, who is the only filly to win the Belmont at a mile and a half.
One great horse.
Rest in peace a.p indy
He paid $2.9 million for AP Indy as a yearling and today that would be the equivalent of over $4.6 million dollars. He was worth every penny. I can’t imagine the return from the breeding if the owner maintained all or just some of the breeding rights. Dug in the track like Seattle Slew and had the stride of Secretariat. Most of his confirmation seemed to be like Secretariat with the exception of the classic notch in his back like Slew and his foals. His only fault was his shelly feet. He was a beautiful horse.

@jm1657
You're welcome my friend
If A.P, Indy never had a hoof injury that kept him out of the first two legs of the triple crown, A.P, Indy would have won the triple crown, Great horse . The son of Seattle Slew was a great one like his daddy, it wasn,t meant to be but A.P, Indy was as good and better than some horses who have won the triple crown, he won The Belmont 2nd fastest in history, only Secretariat A.P. Indys great grandsire went faster . Great horse and stallion .
Sorry to disappoint you but Easy Goer had the second fastest time in Belmont history in 1989 .AP Indy time was officially slower than Easy Goer check the official time out
@fklifter1 Big deal. A.P. Indy was a FAR better sire than Easy Goer, if you want to tell the rest of the story.
@@4orrcountryEasy Goer had bad ankles
Secretariat was closer than that in API’s blood: a grandsire vs great grandsire.
@@johnking5934 well as much money as they spend for these horses at the sales to try to get a top-notch racehorse there's not one of them that looks at their feet since I think Jack Vanberg! And that old gal that used to work for Gainesway
Love A.P. Indy...could have been a Triple Crown Winner...were it not for his injury the morning of the Derby. As a stallion, he looked just like his sire, the great Seattle Slew!
Magnificent run. Glad they held him in the Derby & Preakness.
Wonderful breeding (sire Seattle Slew, dam's grandsire Secretariat), fantastic foal legacy. He was one of a kind.
I LOVE A.P. Indy..........Awesome. Just awesome!!
That was nice. I see AP indys name so much but I never watched him race til now. He's a badass. Outlasted them in that long ass freakin race.
I remember watching him winning the Peter pan stakes, he was the best of his generation
Nice winner (,2, 4, 8) Kentucky Derby county so beautiful horse 2. Win( 2)lengt 👍🏇🏇🏇 Thank you boss
Dave Johnson. 👌💯👏👏👏
Neil Drysdale was one of the greatest trainers that ever lived.
Is.
He's still ALIVE 😮
As the son of Secretariat's daughter Weekend Surprise, gotta wonder if A.P. Indy inherited his granddaddy's large heart gene (which is passed through the mare)? Might explain his taking this Belmont in stride, but of course his dad was no slouch either. Whoa, what a pedigree! Tremendous competitor and a thrill to watch.
AP indy is my mares grandfather
His daddy was no slouch either😂😂 had me dying
Pine Bluff looks like a million bucks.
A.P. Indy sired by 3Crown winner Seattle Slew out of Weekend Surprise, a daughter of Secretariat.
He became a Chef de Race Sire, $300K stud fee.
Storm Cat sired by Storm Bird a son of The great Northern Dancer out of Terlingua, a daughter of Secretariat.
He became a Perennial leading sire in N. America, and held a world record $500k stud fee.
Both grandsons of Secretariat whose many daughters excelled on the track and/or in the breeding shed.
I really miss the ABC crew. They were the Best!
Running style like maternal grandsire Secretariat.
RIP A.P. Indy.
Glorious RIP..Legend
Great race! AP Indy was some horse.
A.P. Indy - son of the G.O.A.T., Seattle Slew!
beautiful
R.I.P Ap Indy, passed away 02/21/2020.
AP Indy will be 30 next week, still doing well in retirement.
RIP A.P. Indy
R.I.P. Great sire.
At 11:48 you just see A.P. Indy kick it into another gear. Awesome horse! I hope I can get one of his babies!

The roots all go back to Secretariat !
One of a thousand polish Rise by Eddie delahoussaye
He came from a Secretariat mare.
AP Indy gone at 31 years today. 2/21/20. No more freight train.
R.I.P A.P.INDY :(
with ap indy's grandson patch running..tomorrow....a.p. indy didnt even look like he was trying lol...great win here
RIP AP Indy
This is my horses grandfather.
Oh what could have been if he had raced in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness.
didnt know he had major pedigree--- the great seattle slew
His grandsire was probably turning over in his grave at that win! He'd have never allowed any horse to even be in the same pic frame as he, at the wire! Ha!
Not on *this* racetrack, for sure! 😎SECRETARIAT COUNTRY
Buena carrea A,P,indy buen corredor👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🐎🐎🐎🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇👏👏👏👏👏
Honor AP has the same running style.
Great Time!! he would have only been 10 lengths behind Secretariat.
AP Indy great Japanese Samurai
If that race was another half mild, My Memoirs would got him
This is not going to be a popular statement but here goes; Pine Bluff was the best horse that day.

I like how Jim mkay cuts off Dave Johnson mid sentence after the race…you’re 3 minute quota is finished!!
correct me if I'm wrong but a.p. indy walks like secretariat.
I named my falabella stud pedigree from the original pedigree bloodlines from Argentina he's thoroughbred Friesian fell pony after ap Indy papered name tomahawk from Toyland
AP looked pissed off
Sorry for asking this, I'm new to horse racing, but what are 'lengths'?
+Marguerite Shadowgirl A length is literally the length of a horse nose to tail.. horse is ahead by say 3, then he's three horse lengths ahead.
Doobeez there are 4 A.p indy bred horses running in today's Kentucky derby . Patch, Gormley, jboys echo, and hence. im boxing them lol
