- john petrucci, music man, dream theater, crunch lab, liquifire, larry dimarzio, dimarzio pickups, music man jpx, suspended animation, black clouds and silver linings, steve blucher,
I have a 1998 Japanese Ibanez RG550LTD with the Crunch Lab and Liquidfire pickups fitted. What a fantastic combination on a classic Ibanez guitar..
You just can't miss with Ibanez and DiMarzio.
Petrucci and his tone and playing serves a purpose in my playing as an influence, even though i do not play Dream theater style music. He just has that portrayal of a great player with his playing and his tone. He's sure to go down as a real legend!
It's more a matter of taste than necessity. The Crunchlab is brighter-sounding with the bar towards the bridge, and installing it this way helps the low B string maintain clarity.
The CL can get fairly twangy in split mode. The screw coil has more twang than the bar coil.
A LiquiFire (or any pickup) shouldn't distort a true clean channel, but results vary depending on the specific amp and how much gain and volume is dialed in.
If you want less or more twang in a humbucker the back plate matters more.
Petrucci is not only an amazing musician, but an amazing person.
I switched from a 59 to a liquifire a few months ago. It really cleared up the low end when moving quickly through notes and still has great cleans. I played on that 59 for years and being well past the honeymoon stage I can honestly say I love this pickup
Larry if you're reading this. I would like to thank you for every thing you do. I have so much respect for people like you and Paul Reed smith,who are so dedicated to what they do. I saved up for a PRS and I was actually skeptical about swapping the pickups out for a JP Set. But I eventually ordered them,since I live in Pakistan it was tough to find a luthier who could replace the pickups. But it eventually worked out. And the guitar sounds amazing. Thankyou! Keep doing what you guys do best.
my hero..long live petrucci!..
What an emotional moment at about 3:08 when John talks about his pickups. It's almost like he's gonna cry because he's so moved
@Guitar777Boy
This pickup combination should be OK if you have an amp with both good clean and overdrive channels. The LiquiFire should be standard-spaced, and the D-Ac X only comes in F-spacing.
Yes. It should be F-spaced for best results (DP228F).
Just wanted to say I am amazed at how thoroughly Larry answers nearly every question that's being asked here and in nearly every upload of his.
Thanks for that Larry (or should I say Mr DiMarzio)
I got them and put them in yesterday. I love the bridge/rhythm sound best. It's super clear. The liquifire isn't much different of a sound, but the tone doesn't get more bass heavy on the lower strings. It sounds like it compensates. I love it!
@KMD861
Depending on the specific guitar, you might check out a Chopper in the neck and middle. They have a little more power than the Injector and might balance better with the CL.
They aren't active. As it says on our site, they are passive pickups and don't use batteries. You can install them in a VMNTX without any alterations to the original wirng or control.
Very cool clip!!
Thanks Larry, for posting this, it is very much appreciated!
@dilo777
John used Tone Zones for a long time and was happy with their performance. Covers don't have much effect on power, but they do make treble response a little less agressive. Whether this is a good or bad thing is a matter of personal taste.
@MorlowKing
There is very little difference between the 6 and 7-string versions of any of our models. However, there may be large differences between the acoustic perfomance of different guitars, and that is what you may have heard when comparing the TZ 6 and 7 models.
@LarryDiMarzio Thanks for taking the time and answer our questions. I already downloaded the diagrams from your website, but I will certainly send you an email in case I need help in the future.
Hi, Thanks for buying DiMarzio. I suggest installing the new pickups first and living with that setup for a few days before deciding if you need to change the middle pickup. Additionally, there are a number of ways to wire the an HSH setup and you may want to consider a newer wiring as well. I suggest looking at the Tosin Abasi DiMarzio video on UA-cam to see some newer wiring possibilities.
Hope this helps,
Larry DiMarzio
i have that pair of pickup on my s7320, and it's killer!! thanks dimarzio and JP!!
The D Activator 7 bridge model will be less muddy on the lows and cleaner-sounding overall. If you want the sound to be much cleaner and tighter, the D Activator 7 neck model will also work well in the bridge position.
this guitar is sooo beautiful I wish I was righthanded.. just for this one.
Mr. Dimarzio, I would just like to say thanks. I recently got the super distortion and the air norton for my PRS SE singlecut to replace the crappy pickups that were in it. My sound has improved SO much, they even handle low tunings well. So thanks a bunch for making awesome pickups!
David
They should perfom well in this guitar, but you should compare the dimensions of the stock pickups to ours to be certain there are no installation issues. The dimensions for our 7-string humbuckers are posted on our website under the support menu in the installations & dimensions section.
It will be similar but not identical, because the construction differences between the guitars will have an effect on the sound.
@CHAMP28K
Glad to hear you like them, but I should point out that these models (like many of our pickups) will respond differently in different guitars, so I wouldn't expect you to get identical results from all of your instruments.
@HnterR
The standard direction is with the bar towards the neck.
@moos3m4st3r96 HI, Thanks for your kind words and support.
All the best,
Larry DiMarzio
I have these in my Carvin Holdsworth Fatboy and they sound fantastic. Easily my favorite pickups. Thanks Larry and John.
Pickup installation is a matter of personal taste, but the sound is brighter & tighter with the bar towards the bridge, and that's probably the way you should install it, especially for drop tuning.
@jayou812a
Different guitars can produce very different results. It isn't just a matter of tone - some guitars sustain better than others, and some are louder acoustically than others. These things can be important to the total sound.
@MikeBassil
A D Activator bridge pickup could be the right choice. The neck pickup could be a LiquiFire, Evolution neck model or Breed neck model.
He's such a great nice guy!
Larry your pickups are the best! I've got guitars loaded with x2n, tone zone, paf pro, breeds, d-activators, evolution, and tone zones! They are all amazing! Thanks so much!
Ive been a long time user of emg 81/85 pups.And for certain applications still use them.However,i have to say that i am presently using the CL/LF combo in my main axe and i adore them.There very "alive" feeling with a nice vocal quality.Super smooth with lots of gain.I plan on changing MOST of my guitars to these pups.There just perfect!!!
Yes, you will have to change the pots and make some additional wiring changes but it isn't difficult.
Hope that helps,
Larry DiMarzio
The D Activator 7 neck and bridge models fit the description of the sound you are looking for, but I always recommend getting used to the sound of a new guitar before replacing pickups, because every guitar has its own sound.
@thingstolisten
It isn't a cosmetic issue. A Wolfgang will work best with an F-spaced bridge pickup and a standard-spaced neck pickup. The E strings may align inside the E polepieces if you install this pickup in the neck position, and it is possible they will lose some output and tone as a result.
My fav pickups =)
AWESOME! CANT WAIT FOR THE NEW SOLO ALBUM AND THE NEW DT ALBUM!
Many players use this pickup combination on RGs. I don't think an Evolution set is necessarily more obvious, since it depends entirely on personal taste, and the CL/liquiFire set will probably get you closer to the tone you're looking for.
i have a air-norton in the neck,and a norton in the bridge of my lespaul,and NEVER change again!
@naochiMalmsteen
Pickup choices are always a matter of personal taste, regardless of the type of wood. These pickups can perform well with your guitar, but it is impossible to be certain in advance that they will do exactly what you want.
Considering the guitar and amp you have, an F-spaced Transition bridge model in the bridge position should be a good choice.
Hi, Try checking Musician'sFriend, Guitar Center or Sam Ash they stock the pickups.
Hope that helps,
Larry DiMarzio
Larry your pickups are the best! I got evolutions, x2n, d-activators, tone zone and breed's! I love them all! Thanks for your products!
We've gotten good results with a reverse-polarity Red Velvet (DP174S).
The sound won't be identical, but we've heard from a number of players who have used them in LTDs with good results, and they have also performed well in basswood EBMM guitars.
@ChaOverture
Yes. It shouldn't be a problem. However, I think you will get best results with a standard-spaced neck pickup and F-spaced bridge pickup.
thanks for inspiring me always!
The room actually isn't echoey, John's voice is so powerful it shatters the laws of physics!
@d04bl3
Both pickups should be F-spaced. The set you are interested in might be a good choice, although it is always impossible to be 100% certain in advance.
Hi, Thank you.
Have a great day,
Larry DiMarzio
The JP pickups should be good in a JS100, but the choice depends entirely on what you are looking for.
Mr. Larry
Im a big fan of your work!
and Petrucci is the most influential guitarist ever!
Regards from Jordan
@incubator2k3
It won't help you in making a choice, but both pickups are available in zebra at no extra cost.
@BOOLsheet
Just the bridge. The neck pickup should be standard spacing.
@LarryDiMarzio thank you so much for your time! :)
They should sound good, but our 7-string pickups have mounting ears that are a little longer than the stock pickups. You can see the dimensions of our 7-string humbuckers in the installation & dimensions tab on our website.
This is back in 2011?? Sheesh. John Petrucci's 2nd solo album, the "Chinese Democracy" of instrumental guitar albums.
7 years later and still no solo album lol the jpx is a gorgeous guitar though and I love the pickups too. Got em installed in most of my guitars actually.
Thank you very much. I'll be getting some tomorrow!
A standard-spaced 36th Anniversary PAF in the neck position and an F-spaced AT-1 in the bridge position might be good choices.
A follow up to Suspended Animation? Holy hell!
@xxsladedethxx
We did make pickups for Chris. Although we don't currently have plans to offer them for sale individually, they are in his signature Jackson guitar.
@Stratozenfan
It depends on the guitar. If it's a stock Strat, you should check out a Tone Zone S or a BC-2.
Can't wait for the new album.!!
@ChaOverture
Pickup choice is completely personal, but the D Activators are a very good first choice.
and now he's released the JPXI, an even more awesome version lol
Any news on his second Solo Album? I can't wait to listen to the studio version of those G3 Tour 2012 songs he played. (:
@BlackjackLead
Assumptions about the sound of a guitar that hasn't been built yet don't always prove correct, but John's current bridge pickup (the Crunch Lab) might do pretty well.
@Oblivionduff
John used a Humbucker From Hell in the neck position and a Tone Zone in the bridge position at that time. It won't be exactly the same with a mahogany guitar, but it shouldn't be extremely different.
The Super 70 humbuckers were made in Japan, but I don't know which factory made them there.
No need to replace them. They work well in split mode.
@blekidud
You should be able to reduce the gain by adjusting the pickup further from the strings. The Crunch Lab is louder than the Breed, so it's probably not a good choice. You would probabl do bette with an F-spaced AT-1 or a Mo' Joe.
@HandRpuffin Hi, Good question, they all have progressed along different lines. No thoughts about a video but there was a paperback book published several years ago in Japanese.
Hope that helps,
Larry DiMarzio
All I know is that I want the JP BFR 7 string. Koa wood, gold hardware, 100% delicious licks and domination. John Petrucci, you sir, are my last living hero of my youth!
You're my hero .
Hi, Thanks.
All the best,,
Larry DiMarzio
@theultimaterockr
1 meg is a little louder and brighter than 500K. Whether or not this is a good idea depends on your personal taste and the basic performance of your guitar. I've always like .022mFd caps, but this is also a matter of taste alone.
@JgHaverty
He wasn't involved in the development of the PAF Pro, but it was in several of his guitars before the first JEM was released. Sorry, but I'm not certain which pickups were used on the Crossroads soundtrack.
awesome!
@plcolsson
A D Activator bridge model should be good. The tone is something like an EMG, but the feel & response is much different.
awesome, new solo album! day = made!
Thank you guys I received the diagram , I look forward to received the pickups !! you did a good job think you again
he's the reason I've been using Dimarzio for the last 4 years.
Sorry, but we never made a pickup called a Super 70. The pickups in the Jemini video are Evolution neck and bridge models in the 6-string and Blaze neck and bridge models in the 7-string.
@mdvo5
There's no reason they shouldn't sound good in this guitar, although it is impossible to know in advance how any pickup will perform in a custom-made instrument.
Hi Yes, They are all passive.
All the best,
Larry DiMarzio
@xxsladedethxx
I didn't know Chuck personally. He never signed an endorsement with us, but he was a great player we all respected.
@cdgriffin88
1) Both pickups should be F-spaced. 2) A True Velvet middle pickup (DP175S).
@SteveBelong
This should be a good pickup combination if you have an amp that isn't muddy-sounding.
That guitar looks so small.
John Petrucci is such a beast.
@Shoji86
The Air Norton has more bass and is a little warmer overall.
@dilo777
That would be an F-spaced AT-1 in the bridge (an Air Zone would also be good) and an Air Norton in the neck.
@xXxglassgowdreamxXx
An F-spaced Evolution neck model might be good. It isn't as loud as the bridge model, so the sound will not be as distorted.
I seriously don't see why anyone would hate JP. He seems like a kind and down-to-earth guy. And of course, he's a monster player. =P
Mr. John Petrucci!!!
@oscarhu30
The JPM had an F-spaced Air Norton in the neck and an F-spaced Steve's Special in the bridge. They should sound good in an S470, but the sound will be brighter than it was in the JPM.
