She's athlete of the year because for 20+ years the rest of the league can't pull fans and ratings like she can.

Natalie it was only Caitlin Clark. We need to be realistic by admitting it was Caitlin that caused this increase in interest in the WNBA. It wasn’t Caitlin Clark and…. there’s no and. If CC stayed another year at Iowa the WNBA would not have had anywhere near the season they had. All the numbers prove this to be true.

    • @natfluential

Why does it bother you so much to give others credit? The league was trending up before this year, so you are factually incorrect.

@@natfluential Give credit when credit is due. Yes, the trend was going up however what happened last season was an exponential growth. It wasn’t just an increase. This was the Caitlin Clark effect. Caitlin caused this, so when discussing this phenomenon , mentioning others has no purpose other than minimalize CC’s personal achievement. Last season other players achieved a lot, and were recognized for many things, but they did not cause the historic increase in WNBA interest.

@@natfluential WRONG! "Most-viewed regular season ever across ESPN platforms: Across 24 games, the 2024 WNBA regular season on ESPN platforms averaged 1.2 million viewers, up 170% vs. 2023." It took a short 2 minutes to google that figure. Then there are the merch sales which soared, mostly Caitlin Clark jerseys, and coming in at #4 for jersey sales was Clark's Iowa teammate Kate Martin who was drafted by the Aces, but who is going to get a new start this year with the Golden State Valkyries. It isn't just the few of us who have responded to your ridiculous claim, it's known by millions. Go ahead and google it if you don't believe me.

@@natfluential yeah it was “trending” up. Caitlin blew it into another universe and I can spend 20 minutes presenting the supporting data of that to you. The sad part is, you know that, but the hate & resentment you’ve shown all season long won’t let you admit it.

You don't have a grip on it either. Put everybody out of the league and just let her entertain you. I see her bouncing the dam ball and running up and down the court with robots. The elevation of Caitlin Clark within women’s basketball-especially her Time Magazine award and orchestrated “fake backlash”-is a textbook example of how media shapes public perception to reinforce existing hierarchies. If people stood up for something, they would not be out here falling for anything.

I know it's out there and I hate it. But that is not Clark's fault or mine. I appreciate you standing up for the truth. The truth is she is a great bb player and a better person than all the haters.

Clark brought eyes to the college and professional game both in this year. She constantly gets thanked for what she's doing for women's sports. She's compared to Jordan, Tiger, and Serena for bringing new fans to a sport as can't miss tv. Sheila blatantly ignored Clark's final college season (or the whole Rookie class') by wanting the league she has a financial interest in to be front and center vs Clark. It was inappropriate for her trying to justify the spotlight be a floodlight on many more because it more directly benefits her.

Callie really refocused it at the end there. Props for that before unnecessarily adding to more discourse. Natalie is fine playing devils advocate but it’s hard not to read into that bias she has a little more for Reese. Her takes just feel a little more reluctant due to how she might really feel and you can feel that.

The Mystics, Johnson's team, had the third lowest average attendance this season with 6,541. However, because they moved venues for the game against Indiana(Clark), they actually had the highest attendance for a game all season with 20,711. That's wild and worth mentioning in the context of this discussion

    35 min+ segment.
The best example of Equivocation. Caitlin Clark is “Box Office” / Appointment viewing. If you take her name out of any basketball related topic of discussion, the discussion is over. You don’t have to interject and force a narrative regarding the legitimacy of the WNBA Pioneers or current players ie: Angel Reese and at the same time acknowledge you are “exhausted” in doing so. We all know race and racial tensions are embedded into the foundation.

Her believing all the players should have been on the cover sits as well with me as giving participation trophies to kids, it’s ludicrous. Michael Jordan was on the cover of Time in 1998 and no one ever bitched that the entire Bulls team should have been on the cover with him. There are great players and then there are icons.

Recognition starts with us…when we recognize our own, we won’t feel a way when a “great white hope” (as people refer Caitlin as) comes in and gets mainstream media love. Just look at how hip hop started. We waited for no one, supported our own…then everyone else wanted to jump on the bandwagon. Supporting your own with your OWN PLATFORMS is what’s really key, cause the mainstream structure is going to do the same for their own.

As far as draw goes bring up the stupid narrative that AR has a similar draw as CC do a google and look at the viewership and attendance of CC compared to AR it’s no contest. Come on girls I know she is not with the right outside envelope but numbers are numbers and they are not gray they are black and white.

14:58 It's true that Chicago, Reese's team, had the second highest average away attendance with 10,676. Except Clark's team had the most with 15,131. Thats a difference of 4,455 a game which is 89,100 tickets over 20 away games

14:15 and 16:30 Angel Reese actually has similar endorsement oppurtunities as Clark(Reebok, Hershey's, and Beats by Dre among others). And several other top WNBA talents are starting to get better endorsement oppurtunities. Arguably because Clark is driving interest in the league

Even Lexies comments are locked where you cant share so that has limitations. Also, Reese does have a great impact, i would say 2nd most to CC. If you put them up next to each other it is still not comparable.

23:25 You're blaming people for not watching the WNBA because of racism and homophobia. On Sunday, I watched part of the Penn State/Kansas game. For 3 minutes, 5 points were scored(3 were FT). Some of the fundamentals were hard to watch. Has it ever occurred to you that the content of the WNBA doesn't create viewership?

Can we just stop with this nonsense? When a person of color wins the award do we say that it should be for the entire league? Otherwise there’s gonna be talk of racism and we don’t want to hear about racism. Also, let’s drop the privilege thing sometimes being a dominant group in a certain area gives privilege to individuals of the same race of the group, but not always sometimes it goes the other way. And it’s just not white do you think a white person has privileged walking through South Chicago? Do you think a white person has privilege in the NBA or the WNBA? come on let’s be realistic.
